Is that a bad thing? For some of us, it feels like a distant memory, something that had to be abandoned in adulthood. Something... bad. But if I asked about BRILLIANT, I suspect you'd have a better disposition. We've been watching Harry Potter movies as a family, so we've heard this word a lot. (British folks use it to describe pretty much anything awesome). But I think most of us would like to be more brilliant, imaginative, astute and... awesome. Today we will explore the connection between the two. We will see that down time, thinking time, and especially --- non cell phone time --- is the missing ingredient for lots of folks. Something as simple as a long shower, or a short walk can do wonders. This is part of working smarter, not harder. Episode 150! In this episode I'm taking you through this blues classic! Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters. This is one of my absolute favourite 'zone out' songs and we go through the main riff and lead parts to this awesome live version of the 1955 standard.Mannish Boy" (or "Manish Boy" as it was first labeled) is a blues standard written by Muddy Waters, Mel London, and Bo Diddley (with Waters and Diddley being credited under their birth names). First recorded in 1955 by Waters, it serves as an "answer song" to Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man", which was in turn inspired by Waters' and Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man. Mannish Boy" features a repeating stop-time figure on one chord throughout the song.Grab your guitar and join me in learning the whole of this fantastic Beatles tune. An absolute classic riff and really fun solo to play. This is one I always reccomend my students to learn. If you find this stuff useful leave me a review on Spotify or Apple PodcastsBecome a Blues Guitar Show Member: https://www.buzzsprout.com/950998/subscribeShoot me a question to cover in the upcoming episodes by emailing ben@thebluesguitarshow.comFollow me on instagram @bluesguitarshowpodcastSupport the show

Sam awakens from his nap (honestly, the guy can sleep anywhere) to find Frodo standing before the Rangers of Ithilien, as if on trial. Faramir presses the witness for information about his quest, but the conversation keeps coming back to Boromir as Sam listens in steadily rising anger at the implications being made towards his master. We see what happens when a hobbit gardener gets his fill of “sauce”, discuss Faramir's quality (not for the last time), and learn just how special the wild Kine of Araw really are… but are their horns actually that loud?
Remembering old time Jamaica presents a nostalgic feeling. The Jamaica of the #50s, #60s , #70s and #80s were fantastic years. Tonight we will feature some ot the words in the #Jamaican Dialect , their meanings and origin. This recording from November 18 2021. Signum master's student Eugene Sullivan will present his thesis “Red Indians in Middle Earth: The Woses of Drúadan Forest and the Racial Landscape of Tolkien's Legendarium” and respond to questions from the audience in an interactive Thesis Theater. The discussion will be facilitated by Eugene's thesis supervisor, Dr. Sara Brown. Abstract: The shift from the mythological mode of The Book of Lost Tales and the early Silmarillion, to the novelistic mode of The Lost Road and The Lord of the Rings brought the Men of Middle-earth into sharper focus. The Lord of the Rings is, as Tolkien noted, “a Mannish affair”. In populating Middle-earth with Mannish cultures, Tolkien drew on many sources for inspiration, both historical and literary. For the Woses, who appear unexpectedly from the forest in The Return of the King to help bring the Rohirrim to the aid of Gondor, Tolkien looked to a cultural depiction that had captured his interest as a child: the Red Indian. As depicted in The Lord of the Rings, these people are the inheritors of a complicated legacy of stereotypes that reaches back through the Piccaninnies of J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, through the Mohicans and Hurons of Cooper's Last of the Mohicans, to the travelogues and romances generated by the interactions between European settlers and the Indigenous inhabitants of North America. This thesis explores the history and characteristics of the Romantic Indian trope, and the ways in which their presence, and Tolkien's attempt to explain that presence, alters the cultural landscape of all three Ages of the history of Middle-earth. About the Presenter: Eugene Sullivan earned his BA in English from UC Santa Barbara. He is a lifelong fan of Tolkien, and was a regular listener of the Tolkien Professor podcast before beginning the Masters program at Signum University. He is employed as a System Engineer at Sony Pictures Entertainment, and also plays guitar in a Traditional Irish band. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, two kids, and two dogs. About Signum Thesis Theaters: Each of our master's students writes a thesis at the end of their degree program, exploring a topic of their choice. The Thesis Theater is their opportunity to present their research to a general audience, and answer questions. All are welcome to attend! Busy week on the farm PLUS a Farm Guest! Dr. Frank Pinkerton, nigh on 93 yrs old, drove himself to Missouri to visit a goat farm in the making, speak at a conference/show/sale in Sedalia, as well as spend a few "leisurely days" here at the farm, and yes- he did make it back home safe and sound!Listening to his chat with us you will learn all sorts of things you may and may not want to think about. Apparently "Mannish Water" is the Jamaican version of Viagra... Frank will discuss the ingredients...Had a great time with him this week and hope he will be back soon- he generally averages two or three visits to the farm a year and last year's Covid lock down put a big hurt on his traveling. After his visit, Blind Hog and Acorn got back to chores- all the usual farmy things plus they sold 5 of the 6 goslings. Ethel is due to hatch her clutch this time next week, IF she has any that will hatch that is. Pilgrims are not the most efficient reproducers of the goose world.

S01E33 On returning to Mountain Hall with news of the evil fortress, The Dwimmerhorn, the companions were accused of ill deeds by Hartfast. The reason for his change of attitude was the presence of their old enemy, Magric. The fellowship argued their case well so Magric, knowing the tide was turning, stabbed Hartfast and fled, only to be cut down by arrows as he floundered in the icy mountain river. The party went to sleep in their rented house, relieved to have a warm bed again. Alas, the rest was short lived as they were assaulted by orcs in the night, the foul band led by the huge orc warrior last seen in the temple at the Dwimmerhorn. The evil creatures were all slain, Hathus again raining down killing blows, but Arahad was knocked senseless in the melee. We join the party after a fellowship phase after 3 or 4 months have passed. Arahad, quickly healed by Hathus after the fight, stayed with the fellowship to travel with them to Rhosgobel. All, except Hathus, spent time cleansing themselves of some shadow points with the scholar instead performing research on the chain, the dark spirit and The Dwimmer horn. Radagast was able to impart some knowledge on all three. The fellowship phase has now finished and the companions are on their way back to Mountain Hall to investigate the mines where Goblins have been heard...This is an Adventures in Middle-Earth actual play using the D&D 5e system on Fantasy Grounds. You can find session summaries, items and characters on World Anvil where our campaign is called "In The Shadow of The Mountains". Today’s show is the first installment in a series on men and crying. We will revisit the incident that lead to the Muskie Rule, which is an unwritten maxim in politics that candidates who cry in front of the press will end up like Edmund Muskie, whose 1972 presidential bid imploded when he choked up in public. Oral history recordings were graciously provided by The Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library. Special thanks to John Milne, Jim Witherell, Emily Palena, Brandon Pascal, and Shoshana Walter. Correction: An earlier version misstated that Edmond Muskie was the first democratic Governor of Maine since WWI. Although it was unusual for a democrat to win the governorship, there was in fact a democrat elected to the governor's office in 1933. The episode has been updated to reflect this. Update: No, you're not going crazy. Man-ish (formerly Mannish) got a hyphen. It better captures what the show is about (the social construction of masculinity).
If I say body image, what do you think of? Stomach fat? Thigh gap? Laser hair removal? You probably think of women. And for good reason. Because women get a lot of pressure to look a certain way. But this happens to men, too. And that’s worth talking about. In this episode, we’ll home in on one aspect of men’s body image: hair loss. First, we’ll take a look inside the thriving hair loss prevention industry and then we’ll explore the underlying motivations that drive men to take drastic measures and how the world of psychotherapy might approach this differently. Internet porn. We’ve all seen it. It’s popular and loved. And yet, for fairly obvious reasons, it’s also reviled for its misogyny, as something that perpetuates cycles of violence against women. In this episode, we wade into the murky waters of sexual fantasy. In part one, we hear from a sociologist who went into men's homes and watched their porn. In part two, we try a different approach - we hear from porn users themselves. In this electronic opera, porn users interact with pundits and music in an amalgam of sounds composed to form a larger conversation about porn. Welcome to the long awaited second episode in our Women in Pants Series. Danielle Morrin and Jasmine talk about pants from World War II through the 1970s. They discuss how pants became an important garment of defiance for a variety of youth cultures, including the Teddy Girls, the Pachucas, and Punks. In addition, they reveal the trepidation surrounding pants in fashion and the way designers like Norman Norell, André Courrèges , and Yves Saint Laurent encouraged women to make pants an indispensable garment in their wardrobes. Growing up, my family played a lot of music. We also performed... mostly funerals. The driving force behind it all? My dad. So, in order to better understand my dad, I revisited the audio cassettes of those funerals and the deaths that prompted them.
