Jano Rix is a drummer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer who has been the third member of The Wood Brothers for over a decade. He started as a hard core jazz pianist, earning a degree from the University of Miami and playing experimental jazz on the New York scene, but he gravitated back to the drums, his dad's instrument, and steered his path back to other styles of music. The Wood Brothers are currently on tour and in the process of recording their next album. In this episode, Jano talks about: How recording to tape changes not just the result, but the entire experiencing of playing and listening during the tracking process How playing keys and drums at the same time brings cool ideas out of both The idea of following flexible time instead of dictating steady time How his jazz education focused too much on the music's theoretical result and not enough on its emotional process. What he took (and left behind) from his jazz days What he learned from his dad Luther Rix about playing with conviction
Oliver Wood is the lead singer and one of the founding members of Grammy nominated trio The Wood Brothers which he co-founded with his brother Chris and Jano Rix in 2006. His latest solo record Fat Cat Silhouette comes out on June 14, 2024. For this collection of songs he enlisted Rix on production duty and percussion along with great friend of The Marinade Seth Walker, the incomparable Katie Pruitt, and several other esteemed collaborators. Y'all, I have been a fan of Oliver's music since damn near the inception of The Wood Brothers and I am thrilled to bring y'all this conversation. This is the third time I have had the pleasure of chatting with Oliver on record. He is always thoughtful and I always learn something. Chris Wood is going back to his roots, so to speak. When not on the road or in the studio shredding amazing bass lines in his band The Wood Brothers, he's on his farm in British Columbia, Canada, tilling the land and getting his hands dirty! Amongst all that hard work, Chris has found the time to co-produce The Wood Brothers' latest album released on April 14, Heart is the Hero, recorded analog on 16-track tape. In going back to a more traditional recording process, Chris has once again broken new (and old) ground with his brother and Wood Brothers co-founder, Oliver Wood along with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix on percussion and keys! Chris is an intriguing and well-rounded musician, coming from a jazz / improv background with Medeski Martin & Wood to the Americana vibes of The Wood Brothers. He is equal parts philosopher, farmer, producer, touring musician, and Dad -- and simply an all-around intriguing human -- who moves in a direction and then goes for it. The life balance for Chris is really what is important -- the key to which is constantly challenging himself in a multitude of ways in order remain steady, vibrant and excited as he hits the road touring in 2023. This week on the show is the great mandolin player, singer and songwriter Sierra Hull. Sierra is a monster player, and while she's still really young, she's been making records of her own for over 15 years now. The latest one, called “25 Trips” came out right around the pandemic, so her touring was curtailed for a while, but she's back at it now in full force, playing with her band and also with Cory Wong and Bela Fleck, being a major part of Bela's “My Bluegrass Heart” album and shows earlier this year. I was really interested in talking to her about that because I can't imagine how crazy that must be to be sitting in a room full of your heros that you grew up listening to and learning from and suddenly they're your peers and you're right in the mix with all of them. In the bluegrass world, that project doesn't get any heavier - Jerry Douglas, Bryan Sutton, Sam Bush, Chris Thile, Noam Pikelny, Stuart Duncan, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle - they're all involved, and it's a great album. Sierra has made some great solo albums with Allison Krauss and Bela Fleck producing, and on the latest one, “25 Trips”, she's co-producing with a killer engineer named Shani Gandhi. It's definitely rooted in bluegrass, but steps out into some more experimental territory as well with some innovative sounds and production ideas. The crew on this album includes Justin Moses, Viktor Krauss, Bryan Sutton, Paul Franklin, Jano Rix and lots more. So we got to talk about how she approaches making music, and all about how she prepares as a side-person for some of the heavy gigs she's involved in these days.Sierra is constantly out on tour and you can keep up with what she's doing and where to see her at: sierrahull.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca
Welcome to Roadcase!! We are super psyched to have the extraordinary and multi-faceted artist Seth Walker on the show. Seth is a true veteran of the industry, and his 11th studio effort, I Hope I Know, produced by Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers just came out on May 20. Filled with his own illustrations and poetic musings, Your Van Is On Fire serves as a roadmap of a life on the road as Seth has successfully followed his Wanderlust muse over the course of his 30-year career. We talk about Seth's unique upbringing in a communal living situation in North Carolina as well as his philosophy on just what drives this truly unique artist. Seth is a gem of a human and a stellar guest whom we're overjoyed to welcome into the Roadcase community. So hop on the Roadcase bus as we wander about within the creative world of Seth Walker. Seth Walker has been issuing music for almost a quarter century. His albums have charted on the blues, Americana and folk charts, showing his diversity as an artist. His latest release, I Hope I Know, is his 11th album, once again produced by longtime collaborator, Jano Rix. We discuss why he chose to relocate from Nashville to Asheville, NC, how an end to a relationship mixed with the worldwide pandemic caused him to look inward, and his excitement of playing overseas.
You're going to love this hilarious and insightful chat with a true zen master of the music business, singer-songwriter Steve Poltz. This is one of the wildest Fretboard Journal conversations we've ever had. Sit back and hear about Steve's excellent new album, 'Stardust & Satellites,' produced by Oliver Wood and Jano Rix of the Wood Brothers. We also hear about Steve's childhood encounter with Elvis, some truly wild gigs with the Rugburns, why you should never take that gig opening for Styx, why record sales don't matter, the perils of cocaine (and elephants), and why Bob Taylor didn't want Steve to take "Smokey Joe" (his now-cherished Taylor guitar). Poltz famously co-wrote "You Were Meant for Me" with Jewel, but he continues to co-write with some of our favorite artists, including Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Anthony da Costa, and Sierra Hull. We hear about all that... and more. "I've never quit. It gets better every year. I'm the most unjaded musician you'll ever meet..." -Steve Poltz This episode is sponsored by Retrofret Vintage Guitars; Izotope (use the discount code FRET10 to save 10% off your Izotope purchase); BED|STÜ shoes (save 20% off with the code FRETXBS for a limited time); and www.acoustic.coffee (use the code FJCoffee2021 and get a free bag when you order two or more). You've been listening to Lay it on Me, the title track from Gabe Dixon's recently released solo record. I've been a fan of Gabe's work, dating back to his 2008 debut album The Gabe Dixon Band, which also included Wood Brothers member Jano Rix. Gabe is a classically trained pianist, but don't let the credentials fool you. This guy can play just about any style of music really well and you'll notice his influences right away. In fact, Gabe Dixon is so talented he is now a member of the Tedeschi Trucks Band. We caught up with Gabe to talk about the new album and that conversation went in a whole bunch of different places. Today, I have the pleasure of sharing a conversation I had with Oliver Wood. Since 2004, Oliver has been the frontman of The Wood Brothers, blurring the boundaries between folk, gospel, country-soul, and blues, earning an international audience and a Grammy Award-nomination along the way. Alongside his brother Chris Wood, of Medeski Martin and Wood, as well as percussionist Jano Rix, The Wood Brothers have embodied the future of roots music, while at the same time turning it on its head. Released yesterday, Oliver's debut solo album, Always Smilin' reimagines his sharp songwriting, savvy guitar chops, and one-of-a-kind voice in a new light. He didn't do it alone, as Jano Rix, Susan Tedeschi, Hiss Golden Messenger's Phil Cook, John Medeski, and several others also make appearances. Embracing the full range of his musical heritage, Always Smilin' builds upon the blues and gospel sounds Oliver explored long before The Wood Brothers' formed, and galvanizes the roots music he's been making during the past two decades. We talked about his long history before starting The Wood Brothers with Chris, their shared wealth of music education from their musical father, how traditional music has informed The Wood Brothers and his solo project, geek out on some unknown roots musicians and much more. Nobody sounds like The Wood Brothers. The Wood Brothers are blessed by dedicated fans who love their singular style that fuses gospel, blues, jazz, folk, country, and rock. The band consists of Oliver Wood on guitar, younger brother Chris Wood on bass, and multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix, who brings percussion to the band with his guitar, drums, keyboards.. Jano Rix..plays a guitar that’s modified to also be a percussive element. The harmonies are sublime..the songwriting solid. I love this band and these guys. One of the keys is Chris Wood who brings jazz chops from his years with Medeski, Martin, and Wood. What a band... Best of all, they’re honest. No grandstanding...just outstanding music. The boys talk about their time with Levon Helm, Drummer& Vocalist for The Band. The Bands influence on their music. This interview took place backstage at The Imperial Room, Vancouver BC. I can't lie, I love the Wood Brothers. There is just something very comfortable and fun about this band. That isn't to say they aren't dangerous, cause they are and perform with high octane and excellent musicianship. For those who don't know, the three piece is made up of brothers Wood; Chris on bass and Oliver on guitar and Jano Rix on drums and percussion. We've been fortunate enough to catch these guys live on one of their early tours and more recently at Borderlands Music Festival and here in Toronto at a packed and sweaty Mod Club. This is a Folk/Americana trio that makes the kind of music you want to hear more of. We caught up with drummer Jano Rix, the non brother in the band, to get his take on being in a band with two brothers, the making of Kingdom in My Mind and as you'll hear, much more. He chatted with us about everything from the Chupacabra, Swiss cheese, and hotel shampoo, to Area 51, his Top 5 Spotify, and ways to stay off the grid. Keep your ears peeled! –––––––––––––––––––– The Wood Brothers, formed in the mid-2000’s, is an American folk band consisting of brothers Chris and Oliver Wood, as well as multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix. They originally signed to Blue Note Records where they recorded their first album, Ways Not to Lose. Now for their sixth outing, the Wood Brothers took a looser approach to recording, working slowly at a number of different studios and experimenting a bit more with their formula. The resulting One Drop of Truth was released in early 2018.

The Wood Brothers 6th full length album One Drop of Truth, is already an early contender for one of my favorite records of 2018. Seriously, its that good. Which really shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone, considering how talented the Wood Brothers are. One Drop of Truth is due out February 2nd, and you really should listen to it at least once. I’ve worn the digital copy out, if there is even such a thing, playing it a ton in the car. For those that don’t already know the Woods brothers are a trio of made up of Oliver and Chris Wood and Jano Rix. I recently caught up with Oliver Wood, the lesser known of the Wood brothers in some circles, because many know his brother’s work in jazz trio Medeski, Martin and Wood. I’ve chatted with Oliver before, so it was great to hear his signature voice on the line. Our conversation started when I asked Oliver about the eclectic nature of this new record even though River Takes the Town is so much of their signature sound…… For more on the Wood Brothers including tour information visit thewoodbros.com. Oliver Wood is one of the founders of The Wood Brothers, along with his brother, Chris Wood. After several years on their own path, they discovered their musical bond and have been on a wonderful journey ever since their first release in 2006. On February 2nd, 2018,The Wood Brothers are releasing their sixth album ‘One Drop of Truth,’ which dives headfirst into a deep wellspring of sounds, styles and influences. Whereas their previous outings have often followed a conceptual and sonic through-line, here the long-standing trio featuring brothers Oliver and Chris Wood along with Jano Rix treat each song as if it were its own short film. The plaintive, country-folk of the album’s opening track “River Takes The Town” gives way to the The Band-esque Americana soul of “Happiness Jones.” The stream of consciousness ballad “Strange As It Seems” floats on a cloud of ethereal beauty, standing in stark contrast to “Sky High”—a Saturday night barnburner built upon stinging slide guitar funk. “Seasick Emotions” is rife with emotional turmoil, yet “Sparkling Wine” is jaunty and carefree. The end result is undeniably The Wood Brothers’ most dynamic recording to date. In this conversation, Oliver Wood discusses the new album, along with some stories of his mentor Tinsley Ellis, his father, and advice for aspiring musicians and songwriters. Oliver Wood has had such a wonderful career, and in this episodes he shares some of his stories and lessons from those adventures. Oliver Wood of The Wood Brothers wades deep into The Marinade! Oliver, his brother Chris Wood, and Jano Rix make up the three-piece soulful roots band The Wood Brothers. We caught up backstage at Suwannee Roots Revival in October. The conversation begins with food, goes to discussing mentors and ends with a few nuggets of invaluable wisdom from one of the great players and personalities in roots music. Check out The Wood Brothers at thewoodbrothers.com and don't miss them when they come to your town.
In 2006, brothers Chris Wood (upright bass) and Oliver Wood (guitars) joined forces after years of playing (respectively) with Medeski, Martin and Wood and King Johnson. They eventually added a third member in drummer and all-purpose instrumentalist Jano Rix. "Chris and I had such a great time playing together and realizing that we’ve been doing the same job for the last 10 years. I think that was a turning point, we realized that we wanted to do this together. So we started writing songs together and it turned into something more,” Oliver told The Daily Gazette in Schenectady, N.Y. The most recent result of their collaboration, 2015’s “Paradise,” digs into how our longing for fulfillment ironically keeps it just out of reach. “That’s why we chose that image of the donkey and the carrot (for the album cover),” the band told David Dye on the World Cafe. “I don’t know for sure, but sometimes we think it’s only when you give up on trying to get rid of your desire that you find salvation. You just accept it, so in a way that’s what the image can express.” The trio’s ongoing Wheels of Soul Tour has them playing alongside Tedeschi Trucks Band and Hot Tuna, which Oliver said is winning them new fans who truly value their music. "It’s when people come up to you and say ‘Wow, you really got me through a tough time’ or ‘Your concert made me so happy,' you realize that there’s healing powers to the music and that there’s compassion in the music that really connects people,” Oliver told The Daily Gazette. "It’s not about the glory, it’s about the connection.” Setlist: Chocolate on My Tongue Keep Me Around - interview - Pay Day Twitsted For more on the Wood Brothers visit thewoodbros.com For more Lounge Acts visit wcpo.com/LoungeActs
On his stellar new album, ‘Gotta Get Back,’ Seth Walker excavates the roots of his love affair with music, by reuniting the family that helped spark the fire in him all those years ago. Walker, who grew up on a multi-family commune in North Carolina, gathered his sister along with his parents, who had been divorced for 20 years, to record the album’s beautiful, sweeping string parts, all of which were arranged by his father. Produced by The Wood Brothers‘ drummer/keyboardist Jano Rix and recorded primarily at Zac Brown’s Southern Ground studio in Nashville, ‘Gotta Get Back‘ is a crowning achievement in Walker’s celebrated career. THE WOOD BROTHERS began as something of a side project between Chris Wood (Medeski Martin & Wood) and brother Oliver (Tinsley Ellis and King Johnson) in 2006.Adapting the blues, folk and other roots?music sounds they loved as kids into their own evocative sound and twining their voices in the sort of high?lonesome harmony blend for which sibling singers are often renowned, it's become quite clear that The Wood Brothers is indeed the main act. With the addition of drummer Jano Rix, the band have become a stalwart on the Americana scene and "Masters of Soulful Funk" (Paste Magazine). 'Paradise' is the band fifth album and it's their most sophisticated and rocking work to date. THE CLAUDETTES create their own fanatical fusion of blues and soul-jazzlike Ray Charles on a punk kick. Think The White Stripes and Black Keys brandish with a piano instead and fronted by Nigerian-American singer/dancer Yana who sings in french. File under: post-burlesque? Neo-vaudeville? Cosmic cartoon music? You've never seen an a band quite like this. WoodSongs Kid: Annette Vogts is a 14-year-old fiddle champion from Wilmington, Delaware.
Brigitte DeMeyer plays track from Savannah Road and talks about working with Will Kimbrough and Jano Rix and how Gregg Allman inspired her.
