BONUS EPISODE – Pack your bags for Italy and dust off some clues with us as we dig into our first episode of a new ongoing bonus series – Ancient Venues. For this first episode we take a look at the Amphitheatre of Capua (Anfiteatro Campano), located in modern day Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Italy. We are joined by Valerie Higgins, Associate Professor of Archaeology at The American University of Rome, who guides us through the history of this legendary venue from the Roman Empire. The current amphitheatre sits on the site of two former, smaller amphitheatres, the first of which is presumed to have been built close to 100 B.C. It is second in size only to the Roman Coliseum and is located next to what was the most notable school for gladiators, where Spartacus was from and began his rebellion. We learn all about this incredible venue, historic venue terminology, seating and ticketing, events that were hosted, why large scale events like this took place, concessions and design, and its fascinating hypogeum – located under the arena floor where they staged scenery and warriors for the events. Whether you're a venue nerd or a history buff, or a little of both, you'll love hearing all about this ancient wonder that helped shape the venues we all know and love today.Valerie Higgins: Website | Papers | Book ––––––ADVENTURES IN VENUELANDFollow on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, or X/TwitterLearn more about Event & Venue Marketing ConferenceMeet our team:Paul Hooper | Co-host, Booking, Branding & MarketingDave Redelberger | Co-host & Guest ResearchMegan Ebeck | Marketing, Design & Digital AdvertisingSamantha Marker | Marketing, Copywriting & PublicityCamille Faulkner | Audio Editing & MixingHave a suggestion for a guest or bonus episode? Tim Vincent-Smith, Lead Artist and Co-Director of Pianodrome joins Earth Care for episode 11 of the Sustainability in the Live Music Industry series. Pianodrome's home base is in Edinburgh, Scotland and is a radical re-imagining of the piano in today's throw away culture. In 2017, bandmates Tim Vincent-Smith and Matthew Wright developed a creative way to extend the piano's story while diverting it from a landfill. The team at Pianodrome built the first amphitheatre made entirely from upcycled pianos and delivered it to Edinburgh Fringe Fest where it saw 18,000 visitors. Since then, the Pianodrome has evolved into an iconic symbol of community and cultural resilience. They're a volunteer-based team that welcomes donated pianos and host adopt-a-piano days. Their creations include the Glasgow Arc, Leeds Piano Trail, Old Royal Pianodrome and more. In this episode, Tim Vincent-Smith walks us through the careful labour that goes into dissecting a piano, then upcycling it into something new. He shares details on their adopt-a-piano days and how many pianos it takes to build an amphitheater. Tim also shares a few special stories about musical experiences from the amphitheater and the community it's built. Feliks Banel presents on this live broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY a live recording of the Young Fresh Fellows from August 5, 1985 at the Mural Amphitheatre at Seattle Center, a concert originally presented by late, great AM alternative commercial radio station KJET. Also, roving correspondent Ken Zick checks in with an anecdote about the time he booked YFF to play the 1985 Homecoming dance during his senior year at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, Washington. And, we listen to the original "Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest" - the one-sided 7" promotional tourism record produced by Pacific Northwest Bell in the 1960s, and the source of the narration tracks on the YFF LP of the same name from 1984. All of this is to celebrate "Fab40" - the 40th anniversary of the debut LP by the Fellows. This LIVE broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY was originally presented at 8pm Pacific Daylight Time on Sunday, May 19, 2024 via SPACE 101.1 FM and streaming live via space101fm.org from studios at historic Magnuson Park – formerly Sand Point Naval Air Station - on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle.

How did the St. Augustine Amphitheatre become a huge success? Surprisingly, the hit mix of music acts only played a small part. GM Gabe Pellicer knew he and his team had to take care of business behind-the-scenes first. In this download, he shares that success story with JBJ Editor-in-Chief Tim Gibbons, along with future plans for "The Amp".
Jobi Riccio has only begun to scratch the surface of what they have to offer on their debut album Whiplash. The songwriting is centered around self-discovery and mourning past lives laid alongside super smart country and pop melodies. Our hero grew up an outdoor kid amongst the woods of Red Rocks Parks and Amphitheatre in Colorado. A strong bluegrass community encircled her playing from a very young age in a way that encouraged her to pursue music as a career. She spent time in Boston attending Berklee College of Music nestled in the folk community centered around the historic venue Club Passim. Then March 2020 hit.Jobi left her newfound community and found herself back in her childhood bedroom. She was “wrestling with all the complications of finding herself and her place in the world while letting go of her childhood and the sense of grounding that came with it.” Eventually, they made their way to Asheville, North Carolina to work on Whiplash. In the studio, she took her time making the album and discovered that, indeed, she had a strong sense of vision for the music. The trust of her collaborators allowed her to trust in herself and create an album that is turning heads and make Jobi Riccio one of the most exciting young songwriters of 2023. I loved talking to them about their origin, time in Boston and their continuing musical journey. This week's guest on the Bees with Ben podcast is Helen Charles from friendswithhoney.com.au. Helen is passionate about educating people about bees and has recently been working on a community project to encourage bees in a permaculture garden. She even roped in the local men's shed in Brighton East to help construct the hives, and apparently the men had a ball! Helen explains that she has always been interested in nature and was introduced to bees by family members in Canada who run a commercial beekeeping enterprise. She was also into gardening and noticed a lot of bees in her area; she joined a local beekeeping club, got some bees from Ben, and hasn't looked back! She says she loves the fact that she is always learning. Helen's website, friendswithhoney.com.au, extols the principals of biodiversity, sustainability, pollination and citizen science, and is devoted to developing and delivering programs, experiences, events and workshops that link these themes with beekeeping. She explains to Ben that citizen science is all about offering the power of science to people and allowing members of the public to make a contribution. She has been working on an app called inaturalist that allows the user to upload data, which is then analyzed and added to the Atlas of Living Australia, an important tool for scientists and land managers. New species have even been identified through this process. Helen obviously loves sharing her knowledge of bees; she is also a certified permaculture designer and the list of programs and events on the friendswithhoney website include a course on basic beekeeping and a series of workshops entitled the ‘Powerful Pollinators Program'. A ‘Bee for biodiversity workshop' examines the differences between native bees and introduced bees, as well as delving into the history of the honey bee in Australia and detailing how to support our hard- working pollinators. Along with her hives in suburbia, Helen also has an apiary in regional Victoria at Amphitheatre in the Goldfields region, which is located on rural conservation land. Unlike urban Melbourne, where there is a relatively constant supply of floral resources, Helen says this presents somewhat of a challenge in rural Victoria, and she has been busy planting native species of vegetation that will create resources for the bees to forage on throughout the year, her main goal being pollination rather than honey production. Finally, Helen and her partner Ben - who is an award-winning country singer and musician – have a very special event planned for World Bee Day on May 20. They have been composing some cool songs about bees and are performing a special kids' show at the Arcobar at 10:00am (located at 8 Arco Lane, Heatherton). This free special event should be a blast, so get along and have a waggle dance with Helen and Ben! Further details at the www.friendswithhoney.com.au website or at arcobar.com.au
