Dame Maureen Lipman has been a fixture of stage and screen for over five decades. She has been a member of Laurence Olivier's National Theatre company and the Royal Shakespeare Company; she is well known for her roles in acclaimed films like Educating Rita and The Pianist; and most recently she has had an award-winning run in soap Coronation Street. In today's episode, Tim and Marie (with some nosy intrusion from producer Nick Richards) talk to friend and plein air artist Jay Brooks. Jay discusses his experience at Cape Ann Plein Air and Plein Air Easton, the challenges and surprises of participating in intense painting competitions, and how his art style has evolved since getting back out of the studio. Growing up on 90 acres of farmland in Pavilion NY, Jay Brooks has always had the landscape as an integral part of his life and art. At the young age of 14, Brooks began painting under the classical apprenticeship of John Piesley and the plain - aire instruction of Charles Movalli, a disciple of the late Emile Gruppe. Brooks was also introduced to the pre-impressionist styles of Corot, George Inness and Asher B. Durand. In 1988, Brooks received his B.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University and in 1990 he received his M.F.A. from Columbia University. Being removed from his familiar bucolic surroundings, Brooks studied and painted the industrial environments of Pittsburgh and New York City. After teaching art in New York City, Brooks moved back to upstate NY in 1993. Here, Brooks is surrounded by countless varieties of scenes from around the northeastern US. His paintings include a variety of images from depictions of the New England shore to the countryside and small towns of upstate New York. www.jaybrooksartist.com This episode is sponsored by JFM Enterprises, providing distinctive ready-made and custom frames & mouldings to the trade since 1974. Welcome to the Good Beer Hunting Collective podcast, the show where members of our team interview each other to get a behind-the-scenes look at some of our favorite articles. I’m Bryan Roth, and I’m the Sightlines editor for Good Beer Hunting. Whether you’re a beer drinker or an industry pro, chances are you may have heard someone talking about “innovation” in beer. Usually, that means a brewery is releasing a new beer, sometimes a new style it hasn’t made before, or using a novel technique, or ingredient. It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot for a product that’s existed for, well, thousands of years. That’s not to take away from all the incredible changes, old and new, that take place in beer—but in today’s Collective podcast, we’re talking about literal invention. In his latest piece for Good Beer Hunting, Stan Hieronymus shares the story, “There’s a Beer Patent for That — A Brief History of Curious Beer Ideas.” It’s his second story for Good Beer Hunting’s Mother of Invention series, which is told in collaboration with Guinness. In his story on patents, Stan looks at the history of beer, and the variety of people who have applied to get their creations protected through a longstanding government process. It's a way to ensure that a creator’s ideas and intellectual property stay with them. Stan pored over a treasure trove of beer patents to find the examples he shares in his story. Many were tracked down thanks to fellow writer Jay Brooks, who maintains a running collection of beer-related patents on his blog. Along with discussions with GBH editorial director Austin L. Ray (which also led to a previous piece on hop oils), it was Jay’s digital cache that set Stan on his way in telling this story. This is the Good Beer Hunting Collective podcast. Listen in.
Jay Brooks, Founder of John Brooks Law LLC, discusses his work helping companies protect their intellectual property. Jay is a graduate of West Point with an Engineering degree, which makes him uniquely suited to advise his clients on their inventions of products and processes. Herlinda Heras calls in from Italy Brew Ha Ha today has Herlinda Heras calling in from Italy via Skype from the 2019 Italian Beer of the Year convention in Rimini, where she is one of the judges. Beer writer Jay Brooks joins Steve Jaxon and Mark Carpenter in the studio again this week. The convention and competition is called Birra dell’anno (“BEE-ra del LAH-nno”) or Beer of the Year. It is a promotion of the Unionbirrai (“oon-YOHN bee-RA-ee”), the Association of Italian Beer Producers. Rimini is an Adriatic coastal resort town near Bologna, south of Venice, that fills with vacationers from Italy and all over Europe during the Summer. They also host a lot of conventions and trade shows during the off-season, such as this. “It looks like Coney Island but deserted,” says Herlinda. Pete Slosberg is there. Della Toffola also has a stand. There are quite a few craft brewers in Italy. There are just Italian beers being judged. There are 100 judges from all over the world. There are probably about 20 of the judges are women, which is a lot compared to what Herlinda has seen. There are lots of craft brewers in Italy and many varieties. There is grape flavored beer, chestnut beer and grappa beer. They are in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, which is where great food products come from, such as prosciutto crudo, parmigiano reggiano, tortellini, mortadella and many many others. Jay Brooks with Chocolate and Beer After Herlinda's call, Jay Brooks shares lots of chocolate that he has brought, to taste with different beers. First, Steve asks Mark Carpenter to talk about the Super Bowl ad for Bud Light where they claimed that their beer is made without corn syrup. Time magazine’s coverage of it said that this fact doesn’t make the beer better or less wholesome. Mark says that it is funny but a moot point because there is no difference in brewing between using corn syrup or rice, as Bud does. Corn syrup starts as sugar and rice becomes sugar. Mark explains that at Anchor, they were all barley malt, which was one thing that set craft brewers apart. Now, craft brewers use every ingredient under the sun. Jay Brooks writes the Brookston Beer Bulletin. He covers any aspect of the beer industry. He also judges beers, writes a syndicated column and a blog and has written several books on beer. Jay has brought chocolate and dark beers, which go well together. You get naturally chocolate flavors in the darker beers because of the roasted malt. They drink a Sierra Nevada 30th anniversary bottle, a colaboration between Fritz Maytag of Anchor and Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada.
Today's guest is Jay Brooks, the well-known beer writer who is also one of the organizers of SF Beer Week. Jay Brooks has been writing about beer for nearly 30 years, based in the Bay Area. He is a co-founder of SF Beer Week and writes a syndicated newspaper column. Wade and Sean from Olver’s Market are also coming in today. Jay talks about his new initiative called Flagship February, to shine a light on “the beers that got us here.” With all the new beers around, it’s a chance to pause and consider the classics, like Anchor Beer. By flagship beer he means the beer that defines a brewery like Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale, Stone’s Arrogant Bastard, Firestone DBA and others. Anchor Steam Beer is one of those. Every day there are well-known writers, including Tara Nurin, who will write an article about their first experience with one of those flagship beers. Today is the 5th anniversary of Brew Ha Ha on the radio and the first anniversary of this podcast. Herlinda wanted to pair some cheeses with beer so she invited Wade and Sean from Oliver's Market. They have Oliver's first private label beer. They have begun with one and will add a stout and a lager in the next few months. They also produce their own wine, so they wanted to have a local brew too. Their goal was to appeal to all tastes. They brought four cheeses for the four beers. One classic Basque-style from France, a goat's milk Gouda, a locally produced washed-rind, which is Red Hawk from Cowgirl Creamery, and a blue cheese. They are also serving their spicy bar nuts that they serve in their tavern. "We take our cheese very very seriously!" This is SF Beer Week and reports are that crowds are large. It has exceeded Jay's wildest expectations. They struggled to get 100 events the first year and this year there are 800 or 900, all over the Bay Area. Next week Herlinda Heras will be in Bologna, Italy, as a judge in the Italian "Beer of the Year" competition (called "Birra dell'anno" in Italian).
