He Blames Her ASS?! | .4 BAC, a Live Grenade & a Bear Attack

It's a full-blown Stupid Newsapalooza on today's episode of The Treehouse Show!We start with a guy whose peaceful mushroom-picking adventure takes a slight turn when he gets attacked by a bear. Then it's off to Florida, where a man discovers a very old LIVE GRENADE and makes the questionable decision to pick it up and personally deliver it to the police station. Right idea. VERY wrong order. Then we meet a woman who somehow registered a .4 blood alcohol level, which sends the Treehouse crew down memory lane wondering just how high their own BACs might have gotten during their prime drinking days. And finally, Reddit delivers the relationship question we didn't know we needed: Should a woman leave her boyfriend because he can't keep it up... and says HER ASS is the reason?Apparently, he has a very particular preference. And no, it's probably not the one you're guessing. It's bears, booze, bombs, bad decisions and bedroom problems on today's Treehouse Show.About the show:Leave your worries outside and join Dan O'Malley, Trey Trenholm, and their hilarious guests for laughs about funny news and viral stories with ridiculous commentary inside the Treehouse Show.

A beszélgetés túlmutat a technológián.

Dining out on acronymsWe use abbreviations every day - in writing, texting, note-taking, talking and, of course, in paymentsThere are a few different categories of abbreviations, and acronyms is one of themWhen you shorten a phrase by using just the first letter of each word and then pronounce it as a new word, you're using an acronymPayments aficionados often dine out on acronyms with the first letters often replacing the full phraseIt's been a while since Direct Debits were processed by Bankers Automated Clearing Services or you purchased your house with a payment sent via the Clearing House Automated Payment ServiceIt has been many years since both Bacs and CHAPS entered our vocabulary as clear derivations of long established payment scheme namesBack in 2006/7 a name was needed for a new kid on the payments blockIt was time to invent a name for the near real time payment system scheduled for introduction by the UK banks in May 2008.Today's global payments naming convention would have led to this new payment type to be christened Instant Payments but 2006/7 was a long time ago and, as a deferred net settlement or Near Real Time system with a SLA time of 2 hours perhaps an “instant” moniker would not have been appropriate. For a time it looked like the new payment type might be called Immediate Payments but if “instant” didn't work then it was unlikely that “immediate” would either. Also, an additional complication that was that Immediate Payments Limited wasn't a company that the Payment System Operator (at the time CHAPS Clearing Company Limited) owned. So with a distinct lack of creative innovation we ended up with a Faster Payment and an acronym of FPS - with the “S” being interchangeable between Service, System and Scheme!Today, we all know Faster Payments (and don't really care about what the “S” stands for) but did you know that, in 2008, the UK nearly ended up with what was referred to as a Scandinavian model designed to deliver a “same day Bacs1”?The term “Swedish model” is referred to as the special institutional arrangements of a society that is sometimes described as a middle way between capitalism and socialism. In the second half of the first decade of the 2000's a different type of Swedish model was about to take centre stage for the “same day Bacs” payment type slated for launch in May 2008.In response to the demand for a “same day Bacs” payment by Payment Systems Task Force set up by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) the industry initially offered ELLE(Early for Late and Late for Early) where a payment submitted by midday would be delivered by close of business that day and one submitted after midday would be delivered by midday the next day. However, in December 2005 the Payment Systems Task Force accepted an APACS2recommendation for a still more ambitious target on payment times to ensure access to funds within a couple of hours of any payment being made, and allowing payments to be sent 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to be available by November 2007 (later amended to May 2008).With the ELLE acronym ceasing to be relevant and naming options including instant and immediate not really working the industry opted for the easy option of a Faster (than Bacs) Payment - along with three variations of “S”.And the rest, they say, is history - interestingly despite the “couple of hours” translating into a two hour SLA the Faster Payment Scheme has actually delivered an instant or immediate transfer of funds between the remitter and the beneficiary (albeit with a deferred net settlement happening in the background) so, perhaps, an instant payments moniker could have been used instead of defaulting to a Faster (than what?) Payment.Whilst the naming convention may leave a lot to be desired we should be thankful that sense prevailed and the “same day Bacs” design chosen was the Faster Payments Scheme / Service / System that we have enjoyed for the last 15 years - the UK would have been mush poorer with Elle.

What would you sacrifice for freedom? For Monet Bacs, Strategic Director at the LIBRE Initiative in Arizona, her father's answer was clear—everything. In this moving episode, host David From sits down with Monet to explore the legacy of her father, who fled Guatemala in search of opportunity, safety, and a future he couldn't find at home. Arriving in the U.S. as a teenage exchange student who spoke no English, Monet's father built a life rooted in hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering belief in the American Dream. “I'd rather be homeless in America than live under tyranny,” he once said—and he lived those words, choosing struggle in freedom over comfort in oppression. Monet also opens up about her grandfather's horrifying experience in communist Cuba and how her father's heartbreaking death during COVID, amid a broken healthcare system, ignited her passion for meaningful policy reform. Today, she works through the LIBRE Initiative to empower Hispanic communities with access to economic opportunity, education, and better healthcare—carrying forward the legacy of sacrifice and service passed down by her father. It's a powerful story of resilience, purpose, and what it truly means to honor freedom.

Acquired by Mastercard in 2017, the UK's Vocalink manages the UK's Bacs payment system, ATM LINK switching platform, and the Faster Payments System, FPS. To make this more tangible, consider these statistics: Vocalink processes over 90% of UK salaries, more than 70% of household bills, 98% of state benefits, and powers 60,000 ATMs.  Vocalink's influence goes beyond the UK, with technology that powers fast payments infrastructure in countries such as the US, Thailand, Sweden, the Philippines, Peru, and Saudi Arabia - just to name a few. Vocalink's origin story, which began in 1998, spurred payments modernization efforts worldwide. For this episode, we sat down with Gregor Dobbie, former CEO of Vocalink, to discuss what we can learn from Vocalink's journey and what the future holds for core payment systems.

Ransomware Attacks: Should we be worried?

Cyber Security is big business. In fact, it's estimated to be worth $160 billion. But that's likely to be peanuts compared to the value of cyber crime, which is estimated to cost the global economy $600 billion in 2022 - nearly 1% of the global economy. And just one corner of that - ransomware - costs the same in damage and paid-out fees as the entire cyber security industry: $160 billion. In fact, if ransomware was a country, its GDP would be higher than Morocco or Kuwait. In this episode, we'll be examining the rise of ransomware, where the risk lies in modern-day attacks, who is behind them, and what we can do about it.For Hewlett Packard Enterprise Senior Vice President and Global Chief Security Officer Bobby Ford, defeating ransomware is a constant and growing battle because its a straightforward payout for criminal gangs - there is no need to try and sell stolen data on the dark web or to foreign governments, you simply sell the victim back their access. He argues that the key to protecting ourselves is twofold. Firstly, use two-factor authentication wherever possible to guard against human weak-points such as opening infected emails. Secondly, be prepared to defend yourself. Be aware of the threats and where they are coming from, and mitigate them where you can, so long as it doesn't affect the running of your organisation. Beyond that, have a plan in place for being attacked, be that data recovery or, unfortunately, paying up. Chris Rogers is a Technologist at cyber security firm Zerto. He agrees that ransomware can be hard to avoid because humans are an inherent weakpoint, and ransomware attacks often come through human social engineering rather than password cracking. He points out that even momentary downtime can cause millions of dollars in damages. He agrees with Bobby that robust, quickly spooled up backups are an essential part of doing business. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done: Backups can sometimes be limited access, which is great for security but leaves organisations vulnerable if the key holder isn't immediately available. Beyond that, backups have to maintained incredibly regularly, as even a day's lost work for a large organisation can be a major blow. On the other hand, any back-up is better than no preparation at all. But how are cyber security threats like ransomware being treated at the very top of the tree? When it comes to cyber security, it doesn't get much more high value or (hopefully) secure than financial institutions. George Webster is chief Security Architect for HSBC. His office is tasked with quickly assessing threats, in particular APTs or Advanced Persistent Threats, and providing tools to counter them. He argues that the primary risk increase of the last couple of years has been people working from home, in situations where there are distractions and their security awareness may not be as strong as it was in the office. He also argues that on a wider level, it's not just staff who become more vulnerable as they are spread out: As ransomware becomes an increasing problem internationally, no organisation is safe anywhere in the world and being aware of the risk is key to countering it without shutting yourself off from the outside. The long show notes for this episode can be found here: https://community.hpe.com/t5/hpe-blog-uk-ireland-middle-east/ransomware-should-we-be-worried/ba-p/7183709#.Y_3FpHbP1PY

What about the little nuances that makes a collector buy a piece that to the naked eye, may match the other 10 that they currently own?
