With an extensive back catalogue behind him techno pioneer D-Knox continues to fire on all cylinders in modern times. His multi decade spanning career has seen him paint a colourful journey behind him, playing an integral part in the history of Techno and the development of its early stages amongst the greats in the US. Raw edge sounds with a killer groove at the heart, meandering between the sounds of Detroit, and the heavier shades of the techno spectrum are what have earned him his reputable status. His DJ sets manoeuvre between similar sounds, dusting off golden era rarities and combining them with productions of today from himself and artists he has met along the way. Growing up in Kalamazoo (Michigan USA) the acclaimed producer soaked up the influences from each and every corner he could. The city sits comfortably between Chicago and Detroit, and this fact has played a huge factor in his dynamic sound and journey as an artist. With two vital homes of house and techno around the corner enabled a young Knox to witness the heyday of this sound as a generation moulded the future of electronic music. His cousin Jay Denham, founder of Black Nation played a key role in this animated quest as the early 90s saw the pair begin to produce, and dig deeper into the legendary scenes they were fortunate enough to be surrounded by. Knox's essential Sonic Mind imprint firmly stands the test of time with the 90s label still growing to this day, playing a key part amongst the record bags of tastemakers throughout the years. Fast forward to today and the label is still providing a safe haven for discerning club sounds and beyond, in a time of over saturation and imitation here we have an artist and label who is always striving to be outside the box, offering something new and interesting at each and every opportunity. Inspired by a generation, and now has the task of sharing his knowledge and positive energy. All of this has laid the foundations for what has been a bright career for D-Knox, his innovative sound always evolving with his timeless productions and story telling trips within the booth are a sure sign he is not slowing down in the years to come; a new mix series on the way, label releases signed off and some fresh merchandise paying homage to his roots Tracklist via -Spotify: bit.ly/SRonSpotify -Reddit: www.reddit.com/r/Slam_Radio/ -Facebook: bit.ly/SlamRadioGroup Archive on Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/slam/ Subscribe to our podcast on -iTunes: apple.co/2RQ1xdh -Amazon Music: amzn.to/2RPYnX3 -Google Podcasts: bit.ly/SRGooglePodcasts -Deezer: bit.ly/SlamRadioDeezer Keep up with SLAM: https://fanlink.tv/Slam Keep up with Soma Records: https://linktr.ee/somarecords For syndication or radio queries: harry@somarecords.com & conor@glowcast.co.uk Slam Radio is produced at www.glowcast.co.uk

There are DJs, then there are DJs who capture—and live—a moment in dance music's evolution. Born in Los Angeles, but based in New York for the better half of a decade, Akua has established herself as the latter, an important voice in the North American techno scene. Akua's DJing practice is fueled by her research in the '90s techno music archive, with a special interest in the history and roots of techno within America. Akua's sets are raw extensions of the foundations laid by the pioneers of '90s U.S. techno. Most prominently, the work and influence of DJs like Jeff Mills, Claude Young and Jay Denham can all be heard across her mixes, as well as the spirit of Underground Resistance. Her interest in fast-paced techno comes from these traditions as well as own individualist streak—while there's no shortage of DJs who play high-BPM techno, you won't hear anyone else play it quite like she does. Her old-school meets new-school sound has catapulted her from the New York underground into the European techno circuit, where recent gigs have seen her perform at dance music institutions like Berghain and Dekmantel. Akua's RA Podcast is her in full-throttle mode, featuring all the stripped-down, hypnotic groove of early techno aside rushes of searing acid, carefully speeding up until closing at a healthy sprint. @akua_dj Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/878

Welcome to DRR Podcast 089, for our first episode of the week we welcome Jay Denham, from Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. Jay Denham is the second generation Detroit techno pioneer - musician, dj artist and producer from Kalamazoo, Michigan - city right in the middle between Chicago and Detroit. His style is a unique blend of these two worlds - Chicago house and Detroit techno, with a Kalamazoo touch. He stays true to the underground, makes the music for the art of it and always remembers where he comes from. In 1992, Jay Denham struck out on his own. He founded Black Nation Records and launched it with his seminal "Birth of a Nation" E.P. (allusion to the infamous and subversive Ku Klux Klan propaganda film of the same title), featuring tracks by Denham himself and as well as his colleagues - Fanon Flowers, Tony Ollie, Brett Dancer, and Chance McDermott. Black Nation's philosophy: driving underground grooves for the funk-conscious record buyer. With the success of Black Nation relentless releases of pure Detroit techno, Jay was able to refine his sound to what he describes as the funky techno sound. TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ D-KNOX D-Knox ( Donnell Knox ) is a living legend and integral member of Techno's history, delivering funk-laden grooves, deep Detroit and hard-hitting Techno for the past 25+ years. Over that time he has gathered a following for his music both at home in the US, and overseas. Now residing in Warsaw ( Poland ) his sound continues to develop, as his passion never wavers. Knox grew up in Kalamazoo ( Michigan, USA ), a city halfway between Detroit and Chicago, which goes a long way to explain the musical direction he's taken over the years. As a musical youth he learned piano and drums before discovering dance music in the early ‘80s. Spending summer vacations with family in these two cities, he would listen to the Hot Mix radio show while in Chicago and The Wizard ( Jeff Mills ) on WJLB in Detroit, drawing inspiration and knowledge from two places that have been instrumental in House and Techno's history. When his cousin, Jay Denham returned to Kalamazoo in the early ‘90s the two began making tracks together and later Denham introduced him to the likes of Derrick May and other early Detroit producers. After releasing tracks for various key labels, like Elypsia, Morbid, Magic Trax ( run by the influential 90's magazine, Magic Feet ) and Denham's Black Nation, he started his own Sonic Mind imprint, which continues to this day. September 01, 2021 edition of The Vault with Jay Denham, Anton Banks. The tracklisting is available at www.antonbanks.com
Bio: He's your favorite DJ's favorite producer. Your heroes are his friends. His mentors are legendary figures in dance music. You may not recognize his name-but you should. Kevin M. Kennedy (AKA FBK, The Sleep Engineer) has been creating techno, house and experimenting with sound and space since the early 1990s. His work has been featured on labels as divergent and diverse as Soiree Records International and MDR. Born in Columbus, Ohio (exactly 3hr 13 minutes from Detroit), Kevin had the fortune to meet and work with legendary producers and Djs Daniel Bell and Anthony 'Shake' Shakir, and learn even more from Claude Young jr. and Jay Denham in his formative years-releasing on the Frictional imprint as FBK. His “Knobs and Switches” EP set dance floors alight and became a 'classic,' recently being reissued by Matt Edwards' R-Tyme imprint 20 years after its initial release. FBK has never stopped experimenting: His sound is hard yet hypnotic, rooted in minimalism but always focused upon keeping the groove while exploring the spaces in between the notes. FBK has been performing live since 1994 and Djing since 1988. His live show is energetic, powerful and never fails to disappoint. His minimalism continues with his setup-believing in portability and versatility over anything. His unique DJ sets are filled with unreleased material and edits, always pushing the crowd to dance. 2019 was a banner year for the artist: Seeing his first album, “More Stories From the Future” released on Rekids, along with his first visit to Berlin, performing at Griessmuehle. 2020 sees the artist with new releases on Knotweed, and another album planned for Rekids, along with tunes from his previous album being remixed by Len Faki. Salmassi’s music career began in 1997 when she founded her first label Konsequent, on which she released music by artists such as The Advent, Claude Young, Jay Denham, Christian Morgenstern, Fanon Flowers, Alexander Kowalski, Oliver Rosemann, Zadig and many others. In 1998 she co-founded the Cologne-based Techno and Electro distribution company Formic, which served as one of the most radical distributors of Detroit Techno and abstract electronica and was the sole European distributor for many underground labels like Underground Resistance, Direct Beat, KMS or Seventh City. Additionally, in 1999 she formed the media label Art Of Perception, releasing music of artists like Jimmy Tenor, Alter Ego, Michael Mayer and Andrew Weatherall to name a few. 2006 brought the beginning of Television Rocks, a platform for her solo projects but also numerous releases by her friends Fukkk Offf, The Sneekers, Zombie Nation, The Sexinvaders and Tenderlions, among others. A few years later ( 2010 ) Maral's single Let’s Rock the Party, a collaboration with Hamburg-based artists Fukkk Offf, became a massive club hit and jumped to number 1 on the Beatport charts. In 2011 she teamed up with "Die Boys" of the famous German Hip-Hop group “Deichkind“ under the name “Die Boys & Ein Girl“, touring with Four Music on their unique blend of Old School and New School Hip- Hop DJ sets. Later that year, she also formed the DJ team “Return of the Amazons” with Melissa Logan of “Chicks on Speed”. Over the last decade, Salmassi has worked behind the scenes. Now, after a long hiatus, Salmassi has both relaunched the Konsequent techno label and begun to produce music again. Through her wealth of experience in many genres, her current project is a new direction and a unique context of today’s electronic music scene. TRACKLIST: 1. Stacey Pullen is an innovator from the second wave of Detroit techno; he grew up under the mentorship of Detroit's legendary three: Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson. Still continuing to produce his characteristic atmosphere laden electronic sound, Stacey Pullen compounds his reputation as a producer with that of being one of the world's most in demand DJs. Above all, from his earliest attempts to the current day Stacey Pullen has stayed true to his one goal: to become and to always be an Innovator. In the early days, through legenday Detroit club “The Music Institute”, Stacey quickly got to know the leading lights of Detroit's underground: Alton Miller, Chez Damier, Derrick May, and Jay Denham who influenced and taught him strongly. A couple of years later, in 1992, Derrick suggested that a good way to develop his skills would be for Stacey to do some remix work with Kevin Saunderson. Stacey began to work on remixes including one for Karen White ‐'The Way I Feel About You', for Prodigy and KMS – just to name a few. Thus Stacey truly became part of the Transmat / Metroplex / KMS team. After touring Europe with Derrick May all of 1993, Stacey moved back to Detroit, ready to establish himself and start his own label. Throughout 1994 he commuted between Europe and the USA, finishing the Silent Phase album on R & S. Releases like 'The Sphinx' as Bango and the first Silent Phase album on Transmat followed as well as a couple of releases on Plink Plonk by the alias 'Kosmik Messenger' and 'Eye to Eye and 'Flash' ‐ both released in 1995. In 1998 Stacey was invited to produce his very first major label release on Virgin Records, and at the same time opened the label he had wanted to start for about three years, 'BlackFlag'. Its debut release, Black Odyssey‘s „Sweat“, was considered a future classic. The pseudonym under which Stacey recorded also dropped the labels second release „Stand“. Both found great success and went on to be licensed to a number of compilation albums, including Stacey‘s „Fabric 14“ mix compilation. Around that time, Stacey took a break from recording and spent the next years concentrating mainly on furthering his own musical education and Djing. 2011 sees Stacey still on the road, bringing his signature eclecticism to some lucky parts of the planet. As a result, every set becomes more personalized, more unique, a window into Stacey's musical passions. With Black Flag resurrected, 2010’s hit "Alive" is now followed up by "Get Up" in April 2011. „I wanted to create a clean palette of ‚beats‘ music. Programming it to deliver a serious groove that would keep on coming, progressing and leaving you wanting more.“ Yes, please."
Recorded live @ the Worx during the Black Nation/Elephant Haus party, this set includes tracks by Josh Wink, Radioslave, DJ Duke, Nigel Richards, Nigel Richards UNRELEASED and more.... This entire weekend is jam packed with amazing techno, all day and all night. This night began the weekend with stellar performances from Jay Denham, Tim Baker, and here you have a recording of Nigel's set. ENJOY the journey!
