Bamboo everywhere! Or is it something else? Join us this week as we discuss the much-despised invasive called Japanese Knotweed. How do we get rid of this plant? And are there any benefits to keeping this plant around? Stick around and find out as we cover our final episode of obnoxious plants.
This retrospective episode consists of previously aired short segments that have been compiled here as they all relate to a common topic. It's called Good Plant/Bad Plant because each segment focuses on two plants: one that support pollinators, birds and other animals and one plant, or plant group, that is an invasive or noxious weed. In this episode (Part 1 of 3), Master Gardener Volunteer, Tim Kennelty, covers native species like oaks, monarda, serviceberry, and willows. But he also advises against invasive species such as Japanese knotweed, Japanese stiltgrass, Asian bittersweet, and Asian bush honeysuckle. In the first segment, oaks (genus quercus) and Japanese knotweed are put under the microscope. The mighty oak refers to the many oak trees that are native to New York. Oaks can grow to about 100 feet and can live from 200 to 400 years. Oaks are generally relatively easy to grow and thrive in well drained acidic soil in full sun. They're really beautiful, majestic trees, often with attractive fall foliage in shades of red, gold, and orange. Oaks support more than 500 different caterpillar species, which of course turn into butterflies and moths, but are critical food for young birds as well. And they produce acorns that are eaten by squirrels, deer, turkey and other birds. If the oak is the king of beneficial plants, the queen of invasive plants is Japanese knotweed. It can grow from three to 15 feet and has bamboo like stems. Knotweed thrives in disturbed areas like drainage ditches, wetlands, streams, woodland edges, and along roadsides. It spreads rapidly through underground rhizomes. Knotweed forms dense thickets that crowd out and shade native vegetation, reducing species diversity while also adversely impacting ecosystems and wildlife. Management includes repeated cutting, and most likely will require herbicide application. The second segment in this episode focuses on monarda and Japanese stiltgrass. Monarda didyma, known by a number of different common names including bee bam, Oswego tea and bergamot, is native to eastern North America. It is a great addition to butterfly gardens and bird gardens. By contrast, Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) is a widespread invader of woodlands, roadsides and trails. It is an annual grass, but a prolific seeder, that germinates in the spring and dies back each fall. Once introduced, it is extremely difficult to remove from a site. Serviceberry and Asian bittersweet are featured in the next segment. Amelanchier spp. is a native North American shrub that is sometimes grown as a small tree. There are many species of this native that grow in full sun to part shade, have small five-petalled white flowers that emerge before or at the same time as the leaves, and have small edible berries that darken to a deep reddish-purple to black when ripe. Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) is a woody, deciduous, perennial vine has since naturalized and become an extremely aggressive, capable of damaging natural areas. It chokes out desirable native plants by smothering them with its dense foliage and strangling stems and trunks. Willows and Asian bush honeysuckle are the conversation topics for the last segment in this episode. Most, shrubs and trees of the Salix genus, are mostly native to north temperate areas and are valued as ornamentals, as well as for their shade, moisture control, and wildlife attributes. By contrast, invasive bush honeysuckles originated in Eurasia and Eastern Asia, and were introduced in the U.S. for ornamental landscaping, erosion control, and wildlife habitat. Unfortunately, bush honeysuckles self-seed aggressively and rapidly escape into natural areas. Although the fruits have poor nutritional value for wildlife, birds disperse them widely. Native vegetation is displaced as bush honeysuckle blocks sunlight and exudes chemicals into the soil that are toxic to other plants. Learn more about these plants on this episode of Nature Calls: Conversations from the Hudson Valley. Stay tuned for Part 2 and Part 3 of this Good Plant/Bad Plant Retrospective series. In Japan, knotweed is eaten as a leafy green when it has first sprouted. In Vermont, there are no natural controls for the plant and it grows rapidly and indiscriminately, crowding out native plants.
Knotweed, nettle, tree of heaven, and garlic mustard — if you live in Pittsburgh, odds are you've been exposed to these pesky plants. But what can we do to get rid of them? And what are the ecological impacts if we succeed? Mason Heberling is the assistant curator of botany at Carnegie Museum of Natural History. He says the best solution is prevention, and lacking that, a whole lot of patience. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy recently shared a comprehensive guide to local invasive plants. Check it out here: https://cdn2.hubspot.net/hubfs/415693/assets/docs/invasiveplantsofpittsburgh.pdf?utm_content=135049138&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&hss_channel=fbp-7163241268&fbclid=IwAR3co4dplZNmJ3Dsnl3aiuPGOp29fwgxu1_qGa6TjtD90_DWZKLIwEwLzRU And our state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources keeps a running list of plants you shouldn't nurture here. It's Thursday July 28th, 2022 and this is a look at the information security news from overnight. From BleepingComputer.com:Managed service provider NetStandard suffered a cyberattack causing the company to shut down its MyAppsAnywhere cloud services. The company said Hosted GP, Hosted CRM, Hosted Exchange, and Hosted Sharepoint will be offline until further notice, but that no other services were impacted. That being said, their main website remains down as well. No word on threat actor or malware involved, but it is assumed to be a ransomware hit. From SecurityWeek.com:Two high severity flaws have been found in the NPort 5110 device servers from Moxa. The vulnerabilities can be exploited remotely to cause the targeted device to enter a denial of service condition. The only way to regain control of the device is to physically power it down, which might present a challenge as many of these devices are in very remote locations. These things are designed to connect to Ethernet networks and should not be exposed to the internet. However, a Shodan search found at least 5,300 of them that are. Now some of these may be honeypots, but they're not ALL honeypots. Customers should contact Moxa for a security patch. From InfoSecurity-Magazine.com:Since Microsoft announced they would disable macros by default, the use of macro-enabled attachments by threat actors decreased by around 66% between October 2021 and June 2022. Awesome. But, where there's a will there's a way. In that same timeframe, the number of malicious campaigns using container file formats jumped up 176%. These formats include ISO, RAR, ZIP and IMG files that contain macro-enabled docs. Now the ISO and RAR formats will still have the Mark of the Web, meaning they originated from the internet and their macros would be blocked, but the files within them would not. Link to the ProofPoint research in the article. From TheHackerNews.com:A threat actor tracked as Knotweed, used several Windows and Adobe zero-day exploits in highly-targeted attacks against targets in Europe and Central America. They are actually an Austrian outfit called DSIRF that supposedly sells general security and information analysis services to commercial customers. As a side gig, they created a cyberweapon called Subzero, which can hack phones, computers, and internet-connected devices. Talk about vertical integration. And last, from InfoSecurity-Magazine.com:A user named devil is selling a database of 5.4 million Twitter users' information on the Breached Forums site. They say it contains the phone numbers and email addresses of users, including celebrities and companies, and is asking for $30,000. Twitter is investigating the issue, which the seller said exploited a vulnerability in its systems that allows someone to find additional user information, even if that user has it hidden in privacy settings. That's all for me today. Have a great rest of your day. Like and subscribe, and until tomorrow, be safe out there.
Invasion of Triffid Knotweed
A walk on the road with Jolee leads to a story of a neighbor tackling Japanese Knotweed, known to be invasive, though beautiful and beneficial to pollinators. We chat about how beekeepers make good use of Knotweed.Afterward, Jolee rests in a patch of Crown Vetch. Farmers once used it as a cover crop, and municipalities and homeowners planted Crown Vetch to secure slopes. Now it's considered invasive in many places, though pollinators adore them too. We wrap up chatting about Barberry & Butterfly Bush, once eagerly planted in landscapes and now are on invasive plant lists. Then we shift the paradigm by propagating new varieties and perhaps begin rethinking how we view invasive weeds and plants. Most gardeners dread Knotweed and goutweed, and the invasive species are becoming more and more common throughout the province. One lesser-known option to cut their numbers down to size is to harvest them - for cooking. Felicity Roberts is an herbalist, and she frequently uses both weeds - and others - in cooking and baking.

Japanese Knotweed Explained Sarah Tucker, AKA The Mortgage Mum turns her attention to this rebellious root, a weed that can interfere with your mortgage, moving house and more. Read on for useful facts, tips and advice… What is Japanese Knotweed? It's a very aggressive weed that lies dormant through the winter months. It rapidly grows in spring - as much as a foot in a single week! It can reach a height of six feet above the ground, but it's underground that it actually does the most damage. First, it can ruin a garden because it strangles all other plant life. Then, when it comes into contact with a property, it can root deep into the ground and damage foundations, drainage systems and walls. Ultimately, it can make a house unsellable. A further challenge is that when Knotweed appears to have been dealt with, it can split and grow back as before. It can be a big problem when building an extension or conservatory or laying a patio, because digging through a root can reawaken it. How did Japanese Knotweed come to the UK? It was brought over by a horticulturalist called Philip von Siebold, who found the plant growing on the side of a Japanese volcano and decided to use it in ornamental gardens. What he didn't realise is that to survive in volcanic soil, the plant had evolved to have very deep roots. Once brought to the UK, railway companies used Japanese Knotweed widely on embankments because it seemed an ideal way to prevent landslides. Is it in my area of the UK? Japanese Knotweed can be found anywhere in Britain in any soil conditions. According to UK government figures, the cost of controlling Japanese Knotweed has now hit £3 billion. £130 million was spent removing it on a site being used for London's 2012 Olympic Games. Is it easy to tell if you have it? Japanese Knotweed is quite an attractive plant that can be mistaken for other species. It's not that unusual for it to be wrongly identified, causing a property to fall in value, only to discover that it's not Japanese Knotweed at all. So it's really important that you do get a specialist to identify it. Get more than one opinion, because there are different types of similar-looking knotweed, which may not be expensive to remove or so damaging to property. Can you get a mortgage on a house that has Japanese Knotweed? Many mortgage lenders are concerned that Japanese Knotweed affects not just the existing structure, but future structure like extensions and renovations. As a result, many are reluctant to lend on a property with it - but some will. A broker can help you find a mortgage provider that will offer a loan in this situation. Whether you can get a mortgage is led by the information a lender gets from property valuers. The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors has five categories for Knotweed valuations: Category One: No Knotweed on the property or nearby. Category Two: Japanese Knotweed is not seen on the property, but it can be seen in neighbouring properties, more than 7 metres from the property boundary. Category Three: The plant is not within the property, but it's seen in neighbouring properties within 7 metres of the boundary. It is more than 7m from the house or flat. Category Four: Japanese Knotweed is present within the property's boundary, but is more than 7m from the building itself. Any damage is minor. Category Five: The plant is seen within 7m of the property, within the boundaries or in neighbouring properties, and is already causing serious damage to outbuildings, paths, drains and walls. Categories four and five mean immediate professional help is needed. A lender will want to see evidence of treatment plans, funds to pay for the treatment and insurance to cover any future reappearance of the plant. If the property is in categories two or three, lenders want to make sure that you're aware of the Knotweed, and will ask you to sign to confirm. How expensive is it to remove Japanese Knotweed? It can be very expensive to deal with - it can cost thousands or even tens of thousands of pounds. Physical removal might involve removing soil three metres down and seven metres across from the edge of the visible growth. Everything that is removed has to be sent to a licenced waste management facility so that it is dealt with properly. You will also need insurance against it regrowing. Could I buy a property that has Japanese Knotweed without knowing? The seller of a property is legally obliged to declare if Japanese Knotweed is on the land. Your estate agent should be aware of this - they have to ensure the seller knows the implications of not disclosing this, because it could result in them being sued. If Knotweed is present, an estate agent should advise you or your seller to look for a remediation firm that offers a warranty for completed work and that is protected by an independent insurer. This will give both the seller and the buyer peace of mind that the property is protected for the future. It's important, to be aware, though, that if you are buying a new property, this rule doesn't apply. House builders are under no legal obligation to declare if the site has any historical Knotweed issues. This is a good reason to make sure you have a thorough survey done. What happens if my neighbours have Knotweed on their property? If your neighbour has Japanese knotweed and they're not controlling it properly, they can be issued with an anti-social behaviour order. There can be disputes about who should pay for the treatment if it's spread from one property to another. If your property is next to a commercial railway, again it's important to check carefully. Network Rail recently lost a court battle with a resident whose land had been infested by Knotweed from a railway embankment nearby. What should I do if I think I have Japanese Knotweed at my property? A great place to look for advice and support is a website called JapaneseKnotweed.com. You can upload a picture, get the plant identified and then arrange a survey. You receive a report explaining the best treatment options and costs, they carry out the work and then resurvey the site to establish whether it's been successful. In terms of what it means for a mortgage or remortgage, it varies by lender. One mortgage provider will want a 10 year insurance policy, for example. In summary, though, Japanese Knotweed won't necessarily mean you can't buy or sell a property - it's a question of getting good advice, taking the right steps and talking to an experienced broker for support.

Bio: He's your favorite DJ's favorite producer. Your heroes are his friends. His mentors are legendary figures in dance music. You may not recognize his name-but you should. Kevin M. Kennedy (AKA FBK, The Sleep Engineer) has been creating techno, house and experimenting with sound and space since the early 1990s. His work has been featured on labels as divergent and diverse as Soiree Records International and MDR. Born in Columbus, Ohio (exactly 3hr 13 minutes from Detroit), Kevin had the fortune to meet and work with legendary producers and Djs Daniel Bell and Anthony 'Shake' Shakir, and learn even more from Claude Young jr. and Jay Denham in his formative years-releasing on the Frictional imprint as FBK. His “Knobs and Switches” EP set dance floors alight and became a 'classic,' recently being reissued by Matt Edwards' R-Tyme imprint 20 years after its initial release. FBK has never stopped experimenting: His sound is hard yet hypnotic, rooted in minimalism but always focused upon keeping the groove while exploring the spaces in between the notes. FBK has been performing live since 1994 and Djing since 1988. His live show is energetic, powerful and never fails to disappoint. His minimalism continues with his setup-believing in portability and versatility over anything. His unique DJ sets are filled with unreleased material and edits, always pushing the crowd to dance. 2019 was a banner year for the artist: Seeing his first album, “More Stories From the Future” released on Rekids, along with his first visit to Berlin, performing at Griessmuehle. 2020 sees the artist with new releases on Knotweed, and another album planned for Rekids, along with tunes from his previous album being remixed by Len Faki. Richard has been a pilot, trainer and skydive instructor for the last 20+ years, he loves his job. Property isn't about giving him the freedom to quit it, it's giving him the CHOICE. The choice to do whatever he wants, to set up his very noble charity (discussed near the end) to help Veterans in setting up their own businesses and learning important skills to succeed. His experience over many years has made him a smart investor, one who likes to be contrarian. He bought a property at Auction that had Knotweed in, out of 40 people viewing it, only 2 bid on it. He won, just over £100k Purchase Price. He spent about £100k on it, and then had it revalued at £350,000! Pulling out all his money and netting a very nice monthly figure. all in all, his portfolio brings in £17,230 (He underestimated this in the audio) a month, PROFIT. Would you be happy with that? The day after we recorded, Rich won a bid on an 8000 Sq ft commercial which he will convert to 12 apartments, sell half and keep half for SA.We also discuss Deal Sourcers (always a hot topic), 'mentorship' Vs. 'Education' and why a lot of providers just aren't up to scratch, and his goals for the next few years.Richard Liddle@Rich.Liddle See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 60 (!), and still going strong thanks to your support. For this episode we present Opuswerk(@opuswerk) from Geneva, Switzerland. Opuswerk has previously released on labels like Knotweed, Steadfast and more, but soon we will be able to pick up releases done by him and François X in the record stores as mentioned in the Q&A Our appreciation goes to Opuswerk for making this interesting set for us. Push play and let your mind drift. 1) Hello Hendrik, please tell us a secret about your music that we didn't know? (gear, sounds, inspiration or something like that) I love the Elektron machines they’re all over my music. It takes time to get to know them and to like them, but in the end, a true love and hate relationship builds with those. Already got the Machine Drum and the Analog Four, and I can’t get to get my hands on an Analog Rytm. Also, I was told some time ago to focus on recording takes rather than programming tracks I believe this was the best tip any-one ever gave me, maybe that one of the secret of my music? 2) How would you describe the sound of opuswerk? Hypnotic machine funk. 3) What's coming up? Releases? Parties? What are you looking forward to? I have an EP coming up in January on Krill Music, with an amazing remix by 19.454.18.5.25.5.18, who’s one of my hero’s and happen to share the same lakeside as me. I’m very excited to see this EP coming out, as some all the tracks mean a lot to me and are the result of refraining to release music, until I thought it was adding a little to the whole current techno discourse. Next to this, we also recently released an EP as Hiss:1292 (which is a project we have with François X of the Dement3d and Concrete fame) called Veves EP on Dement3d. We’re planning to make a live project of it, and hopefully that will see the light of the dance floors next year. No big gigs planned at the moment, but I’m very much working on getting some more, so tell your local club manager! I don’t have a booker, so it is easy to book me ;) 4) How is the scene over there? The scene here is small but somehow vivid. We are however stuck with relatively “big” clubs, which makes it hard to book the less known, but big artists here. It’s really cool, but it leaves a gap in the deeper underground, which used to be very vibrant here. So as a way to propose an alternative to this we’ve started a monthly serie of nights / sunday afternoons called Station pour le lendemain. It takes place in one of the very last alternative places left. It fits about 55 persons, and we kicked the eerie with the great Artefakt from Field records. The whole thing has to be kept low-key, which provides for a different setting and crowd. The main inspiration behind it is Hamburg's Golden Puddel. 5) Whats your favorite dish before a night of techno? I’m a sucker for a nice piece of meat, from carré d’agneau to a tartare au couteau, accompanied some nice wine. 6) Anything else? info about opuswerk, about you, +++ whatever you want :) I wanted to thank you guys for your patience for this podcast, François X and the whole Dement3d team, also Espen and 19.454.xxxx who I hope is having as much fun cycling and riding his snowboard as he was behind the decks and in his studio. They're all great artists you should definitely check! Do check my soundcloud for my previous releases, sending the recent promos, showed that the older EPs are still getting played by people I respect a lot, so if you liked the mix give them an ear :) https://www.facebook.com/opuswerk
Based in Chamonix, France Philippe Petit(@philippe-petit-chamonix) is the owner of Knotweed Record and Decision Making Theory. Two labels that has quickly risen up in the techno scene basically because of good quality productions. Philippe himself has had a productive year so far with a release on his own label Knotweed and various others.
A DJ-set mixed by Argentinian Gonzalo MD (@exe-88). A sound designer based in Buenos Aires. For the next hour and fifty minutes we will hear a set mixed with “real hands, vinyls and cdjs” with tracks from: Philippe Petit, Paul Mac, Mekas, Nihad Tule, Myk Derill, Tom Diccico, Emmanuel, Glos, Stefan Vincent, The Plant Worker, Divvorce, A&S. Also tracks from his three latest vinyls, releases on Knotweed Records, Ressort Imprint and DMT. Gonzalo MD presents an energetic set, almost reminiscent to the fraze “Jackin”. Just in terms of great techno music. We hope to see more of this talented producer and dj in the near future. We hope you enjoy this weeks podcast, and don't forget to follow Monument for more techno, art, and upcoming events! Q&A: ----------------- You have released on Knotweed and DMT. Tell us about the concepts that lay behind these labels? ----------------- Knotweed was the first label that really I trusted with my productions, so I released on vinyl with them. The opportunity to release on DMT (a label which I respect so much) was thanks to Philippe Petit; Decision Making Theory was a label that grew a lot in a short time. That was because of the quality the label presents through their releases. The label is focused on a Detroit, raw, acid sound with a minimalist concept. ----------------- You refer to yourself as a sound designer. What is the difference in being a sound designer, a producer and a DJ. Give us your opinion ----------------- A sound designer isn't just composing music. A sound designer even has to adapt to an environment, plan, create and make that piece/production count in history. The most important part is that the designer has to figure out a way to make a track work according to how the idea of the track. ----------------- We are under the impression that you some how are infatuated by the city of Detroit, explain why. ----------------- I always felt chemistry with that city. The culture, the history, people, architecture, music, were a huge inspiration to achieve a sound which it is like a tribute to that great city. ----------------- What does techno music mean to you? ----------------- I learned to produce in one of worst moments of my life. I needed to find something to amuse myself and made me forget everything. With techno, I found myself with my feet planted on the ground. When I am in the moment in my studio, everything else disappears. It is only me, my machines and Techno! ----------------- Finally, what are your plans for future releases, gigs etc? ----------------- At the end of this year i'm going to do a release for Plector Records. A Belgian label with great artist as Stanislav Tolkachev, Charlton, Sleeparchive and a few more. Also, i'm going to release in a new label with various artist from Malta, Italia. I can’t give so much more information about this. My next performances will be all in Capital Federal(Buenos Aires), 21st of june and 18th of july and a few more still to confirm. https://soundcloud.com/exe-88 https://www.facebook.com/GonzaloMD?fref=ts https://www.facebook.com/MonuMnt Artwork: deadsuperhero - Atomic Dandy
