Welcome back to the Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide podcast. I returned from another 90-day journey around the world, and I'm excited to connect with fellow solo travelers, share experiences, and help build world peace, one person at a time. The FAQ is: Do you feel isolated as an American traveling now? I've been solo traveling quite a bit over the past year, and I've noticed a trend. There have been multiple times when people in a group have discussed where they're from and asked questions about each other's countries. And then it gets to me, and I say the US, and it goes silent until the conversation moves on to someone else. It happens in hostels and bars. In fact, I've had multiple times where I say I'm American and the person will just instantly walk away. I know my country has done awful things that have earned this reputation. It's just disappointing that it creates a slightly isolating feeling at first. Luckily, I've had experiences where people have been really friendly, and I hope to have more of those. Has anyone else had similar experiences? I want to make it clear to those from the United States that they should not let this discourage them. The majority of my interactions don't go this way. I'm posting because I've had repeated, small incidents in several countries and want to see if others have noticed a pattern. Even when they happen, they've never felt more than just passive-aggressive. 60-second confidence challenge Your challenge today, the Confidence Challenge in Johannesburg, is safety. If you like today's Confidence Challenge, my book series delves deeper into how to feel safe when you travel alone. I also discuss my safari in Kenya, part of East Africa. You may want to book a safari in South Africa and read the book as you move through the 5 steps to solo travel, from easy to more challenging, with tips on foreign-language communication. You can find the series at the link in the description. See Book A for addressing this concern. Find it on the website at https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com/ or on Amazon. It's a several-part series. Today's destination is Johannesburg, South Africa. Today, we're talking about Johannesburg, or "Joburg," a place that may not feel easy at first—but that's exactly why it matters. We will cover the Apartheid Museum, Soweto, Mandela, soccer, Maboneng, Rosebank, and Sandton. We'll also tell you about a good tour guide and how to get informed. Let's be clear: this is not a relaxed, wander-anywhere kind of destination. But if you approach it thoughtfully, it becomes one of the most eye-opening cultural experiences you can have. So let's walk through what's worth your time and what requires your attention. Johannesburg is not built for tourists—it's built from history. Gold mining in the 1800s created the city. Apartheid shaped it. And today, you feel both, everywhere. You'll notice: Stark contrasts between wealth and poverty Gated neighborhoods, security systems, and guarded homes Areas where the infrastructure feels inconsistent And if you're willing to see it clearly, this city teaches you something few others can. The Apartheid Museum If you are on a solo or group tour, start here. Not optional. The Apartheid Museum is one of the most powerful museums in the world. You don't just read history—you walk through it. Give yourself at least 2–3 hours. And be ready—it's emotionally heavy. Soweto + Mandela's Legacy Next, visit Soweto—short for "South Western Township." Soweto is where history becomes personal. Before your trip, if you can, read Mandela's book, The Long Walk to Freedom. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2304771/ Walk down Vilakazi Street—home to both Nobel Peace Prize winners from the area. Nelson Mandela Desmond Tutu Visit the Nelson Mandela House, now a museum. You'll see: Local life Street vendors Music, dancing, and community But go with a guide. Not optional. There were small fires in the neighborhoods along the roadside, and some traffic lights were not working. Be aware, but be ready to learn. Want to see a Soccer game while here? There are two teams you can watch at home games. Johannesburg-based Soweto giants Orlando Pirates play home games at Orlando Stadium, which the City of Johannesburg owns. While Carling Black Label has recently partnered with Kaizer Chiefs as a sponsor, the teams' major sponsors historically have included Vodacom and others. https://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/43608195/what-soweto-derby-why-kaizer-chiefs-orlando-pirates-south-africa-most-popular-teams Head to Maboneng, Johannesburg's creative district. Think: Street art Local designers Live music Markets like The Playground It's one of the few places where you can walk more freely—but still stay aware. Grab a meal, enjoy the vibe, but don't linger alone after dark. Now, let's visit Rosebank + Sandton (Modern Johannesburg) If you're wondering where things feel familiar—this is it. In Rosebank: Visit the arts and crafts market Browse local goods safely In Sandton: Upscale shopping Restaurants Hotels like Marriott Global brands like Apple and Nike It's polished—but don't confuse that with the whole city. A few dining places to consider: Pata Pata in Maboneng Salvation Café https://www.salvationcafe.co.za/ Looking for a travel guide in Johannesburg? Here's a suggestion. Beck N Coll. Benoni is Colleen Becker's hometown, just outside of Johannesburg. Her grown Son is Calvin. She's married to Glenn. "Beck n Coll "is their travel company name. Through other means, nsuch aske Servas and Host a Sister, they have had 70-plus guests so far. Help them by booking your trip with them. Here is the website for more info. This episode is not a sponsored post. They can book you on a safari tour as they are experts here. https://www.beckncoll.co.za/ https://www.instagram.com/hostasister/ Here is more on Host A Sister. It's a global Facebook community connecting women worldwide to share homes for free, fostering friendship, cultural exchange, and safe, budget-friendly travel. Members (women and non-binary individuals) offer accommodation, local meetups, and travel advice without monetary exchange, ensuring it remains a non-dating platform, and I used it here. I met Colleen through Servas, and she told me about Host a Sister, which I used later in my 90-day trip. Let's summarize and add value with my reality check: Not every place will feel intuitive or walkable—plan your stops. You'll hear "be careful," and you should question what that actually means. Here's the reality: Do not travel alone at night Use Uber or arrange drivers Stay in known areas (Sandton, Rosebank) Avoid spontaneous wandering Keep your phone out of sight in public But also, don't assume constant danger. Many travelers report no issues when they stay aware and structured, like me. This guidance is not fear-based travel. It's informed travel. Johannesburg is not about comfort. It's about understanding. You will see: Inequality Resilience Creativity My missteps: Wrong Airport in Johannesburg Travel Mistake to Avoid I should have booked Johannesburg's other airport from Cape Town. I didn't realize there were two airports, and I picked the cheaper one. I ended up on the wrong side of town and had to Uber from the airport to the train station. Then I got on the train and got to my destination. So, in the end, I did not save any money. Check the airport before you book Safari Air! Thanks for listening, and I'll see you on the next journey. Gated content is sold as a “lead engine,” but enterprise buyers experience it as a trap. The moment someone is curious enough to learn, we hit them with a form, a workflow, and the implied threat of follow-up. We unpack why that single move slows enterprise sales and SME sales at the worst possible time, and why it quietly signals the wrong priorities: extracting data over respecting how serious buyers actually evaluate risk, ROI, and change. We start with proof from our own open access approach: hundreds of ungated PDF downloads without paid media, driven by compounding attention across long-form content, social clips, email, and the podcast. From there we break down the core problems with gated content in B2B marketing: added friction, reduced trust, and the hidden SEO cost of making your best thinking invisible to Google. We also call out the “lead” narrative that turns a form fill into dashboard progress, even when it produces no pipeline and no revenue. Then we get blunt about the economics. Gated downloads are often “joined at the hip” with SDR and BDR follow-up, but the maths of call volume, low hit rates, and limited active opportunity pools makes TAM coverage through manual outreach wildly inefficient. That's why we argue for a GTM reset: measure exposure and familiarity first, build consistent open access education, and keep forms for real intent moments like booking a meeting. In too many folks' eyes, a thing ain’t good until it’s been adopted by mainstream (white) culture. The same news story that makes waves on CNN falls flat on BET. The same person buying a fancy sweater from Ralph Lauren will scoff at House of Gray. Black folks are not immune to this, those who automatically trust a white doctor (or other specialist) over a Black one, for example. Jenn (@notajenny) and Chels (@chels725) are back one last time to talk about their beloved (and now tragically cancelled) series, Mythic Quest. On their "Heaven and Hell" recap, they talked about that game-changing final scene featuring Ian and Poppy kissing. But now that the ending has changed, Jenn and Chels process how they feel about the original ending's erasure. They also discuss television series cancellations in general, "lost" media, what kind of precedent changing an ending of a cancelled show could create for showrunners in the future, and why people should still watch Mythic Quest even though it won't be returning for another season. They then daydream what could have been for a season five, and end by playing a fun game of selecting currently running TV shows they'd like to transport the Mythic Quest crew into.Enjoy, all!Our recommended media:Gated. Recorded Content - Helping B2B marketers use a podcast for content marketing
In the latest episode of Content Head, Joe Michalowski shares his thoughts and insights regarding the ongoing debate about the value of gated content. While some argue it is no longer effective, his experiences show otherwise. Joe highlights his success with gated content at Mosaic, where a particular asset, the SaaS Metrics Cheat Sheet, significantly outperformed other materials in terms of downloads, pipeline generation, and customer conversions.Joe dives into the specifics of why the SaaS Metrics Cheat Sheet was so successful, attributing its performance to the targeted SEO strategy that brought in a large volume of organic traffic. He notes that while this cheat sheet worked exceptionally well in organic search and PPC campaigns related to metrics, it did not perform as well in other channels like email, social media, or non-metric SEO articles. This discrepancy underscores the importance of understanding where and how to distribute gated content to achieve optimal results. The episode concludes with Joe offering key takeaways for marketers looking to create effective gated content. He advises considering the distribution channels available, matching content ideas to audience expectations, and ensuring the format aligns with the content and distribution strategy. Joe stresses that successful gated content requires more than just replicating past formats; it demands a thoughtful approach to content creation, format selection, and strategic distribution.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: JumpReLU SAEs + Early Access to Gemma 2 SAEs, published by Neel Nanda on July 19, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. New paper from the Google DeepMind mechanistic interpretability team, led by Sen Rajamanoharan! We introduce JumpReLU SAEs, a new SAE architecture that replaces the standard ReLUs with discontinuous JumpReLU activations, and seems to be (narrowly) state of the art over existing methods like TopK and Gated SAEs for achieving high reconstruction at a given sparsity level, without a hit to interpretability. We train through discontinuity with straight-through estimators, which also let us directly optimise the L0. To accompany this, we will release the weights of hundreds of JumpReLU SAEs on every layer and sublayer of Gemma 2 2B and 9B in a few weeks. Apply now for early access to the 9B ones! We're keen to get feedback from the community, and to get these into the hands of researchers as fast as possible. There's a lot of great projects that we hope will be much easier with open SAEs on capable models! Gated SAEs already reduced to JumpReLU activations after weight tying, so this can be thought of as Gated SAEs++, but less computationally intensive to train, and better performing. They should be runnable in existing Gated implementations. Abstract: Sparse autoencoders (SAEs) are a promising unsupervised approach for identifying causally relevant and interpretable linear features in a language model's (LM) activations. To be useful for downstream tasks, SAEs need to decompose LM activations faithfully; yet to be interpretable the decomposition must be sparse - two objectives that are in tension. In this paper, we introduce JumpReLU SAEs, which achieve state-of the-art reconstruction fidelity at a given sparsity level on Gemma 2 9B activations, compared to other recent advances such as Gated and TopK SAEs. We also show that this improvement does not come at the cost of interpretability through manual and automated interpretability studies. JumpReLU SAEs are a simple modification of vanilla (ReLU) SAEs - where we replace the ReLU with a discontinuous JumpReLU activation function - and are similarly efficient to train and run. By utilising straight-through-estimators (STEs) in a principled manner, we show how it is possible to train JumpReLU SAEs effectively despite the discontinuous JumpReLU function introduced in the SAE's forward pass. Similarly, we use STEs to directly train L0 to be sparse, instead of training on proxies such as L1, avoiding problems like shrinkage. Thanks for listening. In this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast, I interviewed Jonathan Gandolf, the founder and CEO of The Juice, a B2B content platform aimed at solving marketers' biggest pain points in distribution, reach, and audience engagement. Jonathan Gandolf's career has spanned craft beer to digital marketing, leading to his current venture which is often described as the "Spotify for B2B content." During our insightful conversation, we delved into the ever-evolving landscape of content marketing, focusing on the contentious debate between gated and ungated content. Gandolf shared valuable insights from his extensive experience, providing actionable strategies for how businesses can effectively use content to engage their audience and drive conversions. Key Takeaways Jonathan Gandolf emphasizes that content must educate and entertain to build trust and engagement, noting that ungated content is 26% more engaging than gated content. He highlights AI's role in enhancing content creation and distribution efficiencies, while also underscoring the irreplaceable value of human experience and wisdom. Although Gandolf sees strategic value in occasionally gating content to provide customized experiences, he advocates primarily for ungated content to attract genuine audience interaction. As email clutter becomes a growing concern for many individuals, marketers are facing the challenge of getting their messages seen in a crowded inbox.
