An episode that feels well overdue yet thoroughly worth the wait! A titan of the Naarm underground music scene, Pjenné has been a kindred spirit and longtime pal since the early days of MDC, and it's no surprise that her contribution is packed full of gloriously deep and immersive feels, bassy and driving in parts and light as a feather in others, speaking to a palette that has been meticulously explored and continues to evolve along with her incredible weekly radio show on PBS, Passing Notes. @pjenne Q. What sounds of feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in? A. For this mix, I wanted to channel the energy and sounds that I associate with Melbourne Deepcast rather than drawing on the darker side of my sound palette that has been at the fore of my radio and club sets of late. MDC means so many things to me, but there's definitely an energetic, grooviness that comes to mind and this is what inspired the mix. Although the mix does showcase parts of me (heavily atmospheric, emotive and a few downtempo tracks for good measure), I'd say this is more of a mix for you. :) I imagine this mix being listened to outside, on a sunny day, but when you might also need a little extra pep in your step. Q. Are there any songs in the mix that are especially close to your heart, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much? A. The first that came to mind is a track by Sean Cusick and Medway (Jesse Skeens) - It is an incredibly beautiful and emotive breakbeat track from 2002 on Saw recordings, there's just something about how the vocals and the pads wash over you - although its upbeat there's also a sombreness to it and I just think its the whole package. Towards the end of the mix there's also a very very classic ambient trance number, Lazer Worshippers by Damon Wild & Tim Taylor from 1993 - Not the most deeply dug track but it's a classic for a reason. Q. You have been lovingly broadcasting your weekly radio show Passing Notes on PBS for six years running, which is a serious achievement! Tell us what you did for your sixth anniversary on International Women's Day, and what keeps you inspired to broadcast the show week in week out? A. It's been a wild ride that's for sure! I really appreciate that International Women's Day marks each yearly anniversary of Passing Notes - it reminds me to stop and reflect on each year as an achievement that I would probably otherwise forget in the chaos of life. This year I enlisted the help of Syrian DJ and Harmony Rec affiliate Zeynep, who provided an excellent, playful and sassy celebratory guest mix. As for my inspiration to keep going, I'd say that I draw from the collective power of electronic artists locally as well as internationally. There's just so much good music to share, and Passing Notes enables me to provide a crucial connection between ‘underground' electronic music and the wider music community. I'm also inspired by live radio as a format - it provides a sanctuary for me from the highly curated nature of music today and allows me to be more playful in the way that I explore different sounds. To me it is a place free of judgement.
Nuno Costa began his ventures into electronic music in 2008 with his Sinner moniker, and with it he created Warface, a local crew and promoter focused on dubstep, drum 'n' bass, and UK garage. In 2013 he kickstarted his new project, VIL, focusing mainly on techno. His debut EP came in early 2015, when Portuguese label Extended Records picked him up for a release. Soon after, he released on Lewis Fautzi's “Faut Section” imprint, on the legendary Synewave New York, run by Damon Wild and Be as One records from Shlomi Aber. VIL's refined taste and set building ability has already earned him a place at some of the best clubs in the country, of which Lux Frágil and Gare are included, and is a regular presence at many of the country's festivals as well. Fast forward to 2018, where alongside Portuguese artists Temudo and Menosdois, he creates Hayes, a collective focused on showcasing the distinct output of its artists through vinyl and digital releases. Already counting with several vinyl releases since its inception and garnering support by some of the biggest name in the scene, Hayes turns out to be one the most promising labels to rise during the pandemic. Furthermore VIL used the extended time in the studio between 2020 and 2021 to place his output on renowned labels outside of his own realm. Landing highly anticipated EPs both on Ben Klock's seminal label Klockworks and Stranger's Self Reflektion to name a few. In November 2024 he released his debut album on Steffi's Dolly label. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us." Three New York visionaries discuss the city's '90s heyday. '90s nightlife in New York conjures images of Party Monster, jacking disco house and a rotating cast of mega clubs that saw thousands of revellers pass through their doors each weekend. From Limelight and Sound Factory to Palladium and countless others, clubbing was hitting its stride in New York, while producers like Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones and Damon Wild were producing game-changing 12-inches. But it was also the beginning of a decline, catalysed by the rollout of Mayor Rudy Giuliani's discriminatory policies that slowly gutted the club scene and the communities that called it home. To honour Resident Advisor's partnership with Wire Festival in Brooklyn this weekend, we're revisiting a panel recorded at our 24/7 party at Nowadays in 2018. We tasked the beloved Brooklyn fanzine Love Injection with presenting discussions covering five decades of dance music history. In this panel, Strictly Rhythm cofounder Gladys Pizarro, DJ and producer Lenny Dee and drag superstar and vogue performer Kevin Aviance spoke with journalist (and former RA staffer) Max Pearl about the rise and fall of the city's club scene during its golden decade. They also discussed how the city was sequestered, forcing many artists at the vanguard of '90s-era techno to make music and throw their own parties as the scene grew and shifted beneath the weight of city-wide reforms. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us," said Lenny D. "So when we were doing it, we were making parties out in Brooklyn. A lot of music at that time was made here in Brooklyn—Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones, Tommy Musto, Damon Wild. So we had this scene where we're making great music, but no one's letting us play, so we're just going to do it ourselves." Listen to the episode in full.

TRACKLIST=> bit.ly/SlamRadioGroup NYCTA is a project Adam X and Function have been pulling together, with many obstacles along the way, over the course of the last 10 years and this mix captures the essence of what they set out to achieve. It pays total homage to the sound and it's a sound that, in a scene where everything has already been largely reissued, hasn't had a light shone on it yet. Nugroove, yes. But this is much more than that. Though not overlooked in the history of electronic music when it comes to the early days of electro, hip hop and disco, New York City has been largely overlooked in it's contributions to the origins of techno and house music in America, while the cities of Detroit & Chicago have always taken most of the credit. Names like Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones, Lenny Dee, Tommy Musto, How & Little, Mundo Muzique, Damon Wild, Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, Ralphie Dee, Jimmy Crash, Rheji Burrell, Bobby Konders, Roger S, Blue Jean, L.B. As a music maker and DJ, Temudo is part of a new generation of artists whose work relies on the contemporary approach on Techno. The music he makes has the seal of mythical labels such as Soma, Hayes, Modularz, Clergy, Mord, Synewave or Planet Rhythm. João Rodrigues began his love affair with music early on. After learning the guitar at a young age, he enrolled at a local Jazz school where he studied instruments and musical theory for two years. At 18 he pursued higher education into Sound and Image at ESAD university, quickly bumping into electronic music. Soon after he became enthralled with sequenced music, citing Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin, Boards Of Canada, Noisia and Extrawelt as some of his early influences. After completing his degree in 2009, he created his Drum 'n' Bass project, Medio, that would see him play throughout the country, and even earning him an European mixing prize. Always eager to learn more, João took his musical education further when he began his Masters in Musical Arts and Technology. It was during this period that his interest in Techno music began to spark, and also where his now established moniker, Temudo, was thought out. As Temudo he joined the Dead Motion Records crew, alongside Low Is and UFO19, carving out his first EP in 2014. Validation from the underground ensued when his “Longe” track was played on the Deep Space Helsinki radio show by Finnish techno stalwart Juho Kusti. In 2016 he put out two EP's that would see his music spread quickly into the speakers of clubs and festivals. Released on Modulhertz and Planet Rhythm, these tracks were played by the likes of Exium, Umek, Hyperactive, and Emmanuel Top. Doubling down on his release schedule, he put out four EP's the next year. The first, on Modulhertz, was pressed on vinyl and included a remix by the legendary The Advent. The second, another on Planet Rhythm, made it into Beatport's Top 100 Techno Releases. The third, in collaboration with fellow artist VIL, was released on Damon Wild's renowned Synewave. Artists such as Rødhåd, Adriana Lopez, Blue Hour, and Ben Sims, are just some of the DJ's to play the tracks. His last EP of the year, released on Affekt Recordings, also roared through the international ranks, with artists like Cleric, Rødhåd, The Advent, and Setaoc Mass playing it out. Temudo's most recent creation, with VIL, -2 and Osse, is Hayes, a collective focused on showcasing the distinct output of its artists through vinyl and digital releases. Their first two releases has put them well on the map, with several big guns supporting the tracks. His latest releases in 2019 set the bar higher, participating in Herdersmat Part 19-22, by MORD, having an LP in AWRY and releasing with Nørbak, I will guide Thy Hand EP in Modularz, Mxt (with Moddullar) on Clergy and the anticipated Context EP on Soma. Also, VA's for Suara, Planet Rhythm and Invite's Choice. He is now one of the most important Portuguese techno artists of a new generation.
It’s guys night on the podcast, so friend of the show Anthony Parasole stops by to talk guy shit: John Carpenter, Thom Yorke’s moany-ass voice, virtual clubbing, and why you may as well toss a suitcase full of cash out of a helicopter instead of press a record. We talk a lot of music, too - focusing on Synewave classics, Damon Wild, Tommy Musto, Dennis Ferrer, Success-N-Effect, and The The. And we take some calls from our loyal listeners who have a lot to say about James Dolan. A.Paul (POR) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 73 pt.5 3RD ANNIVERSARY! Bio: A.Paul was born in Lisbon, Portugal in November 1971, and his career started in 1986, although his first contact with music was made at a very early stage, mainly through the hands of his older sister that would regularly listen to disco, funk, and electro sounds in the 70′s. From a music passionate mind, to a national celebrity, A.Paul is today one of the key players of the electronic music scene on a worldwide scale, both as a DJ and as a Producer. His taste, technique and originality made him earn the respect from his peers and most of all the love and devotion from his fans. After the first years of musical discovery, his talent start to blossom when he was 13, despite living in a country where only a small percentage of people would listen to dance music, he always knew that these infectious rhythms would be on his path. After buying his first decks and mixer, including a couple of years of bedroom practice, he organized a few parties himself and later acquired his first residencies in clubs, through the hand of J.Daniel, who was one of the most respected Portuguese DJs in the 90′s. He was the owner of Question of Time Records, a vanguard record shop and record label, where A.Paul would later release his first record “Juice” a remarkable masterpiece that was played by many top DJs worldwide and licensed to various labels and compilations. He was also invited to be part of the Climacz project, the first after-hours club in Portugal, which was one of the first milestones of his career. The amazing spirit this venue brought to the Portuguese scene is still remembered with great joy and nostalgia by A.Paul himself. At some point he felt the need to move on and search for new challenges. In 1996, he became part of the Illegal Records project as a techno import manager, was invited to be resident of the best club at that time Kremlin, and later founded his first labels, Squeeze Records and Onh.Cet, which were two relevant projects that helped define and polish his sound. By then he was also already playing quite a lot as freelancer, in a growing market. Portugal was at its peak, in terms of electronic music popularity and A.Paul was playing at one point every weekend on different parts of the country. It was inevitable that he would decide to stick to this option for his career, as opposed to be resident in a club, where he would be more limited in terms of music taste. In 1997 he joins the X-Club, the most important DJ Agency and party organizer in Portugal. All the top cats were signed to X-Club, and so was A.Paul, first as a supporting artist, and later part of the agency’s top artists too. This period was very important for A.Paul, and his growth was remarkable, because he had the chance to meet and play with all the major techno and house artists in the world. Other projects developed by A.Paul at that time include sound engineering, journalism and also graphic and web design, activities that would become also important on his next projects. A.Paul was voted best Portuguese techno DJ in 2000, 2001, and 2002 by the readers of Dance Club, the main electronic music media vehicle in Portugal. A.Paul has never stopped investing and supporting the electronic music community particularly in techno. This is when A.Paul decides to start exploring the international market, due to the changes in the Portuguese scene.1994 to 2000 was monumental time after suffering from the huge decline in quality and quantity of events and musical culture. From the “Paradise Called Portugal” coined years before by international media, Portugal was now a place with a stagnated scene, and techno was probably the first genre to suffer. It was time for change, this crisis lead him to invest his time in a music production career, that was quiet for a few years due to the higher demand for DJ previously. In 2001 he opened Genesis record shop. Later in 2007 A.Paul was co-owner of MPC Vinyl Distribution, with his long-time friends Cisco Ferreira (The Advent) and Michaelangelo, where he also released on his other sub -labels The Light, Parallel 125, Dirty Ego, LK and Xtractz. In In 2012 A.Paul’s most renowned & most successful project to date is Naked Lunch Records which was created back in 2005 really began to really take mold into one of the driving forces in the techno scene. Naked Lunch Podcast, a weekly podcast, which is a careful balance of top quality underground DJs and the game changers in the techno scene. Fast forward to 2013, this marked a new monumental moment in A.Paul’s career as a promoter, by the end of the year he had 5 success events under his belt! With the success of the highly acclaimed Naked Lunch Nights in Portugal, its natural step would be to take his events international for 2014, alongside the grand opening of the much anticipated Naked Lunch Agency, the missing puzzle piece to complete his techno vision & one day his legacy. A.Paul has released over 100 vinyl records, several mixed CD compilations released in amazing labels like; Kombination Research, Synewave, Planet Rhyhtm, Italo Business, Pure Sonik, Theory, Mastertraxx, Beat Disaster, Yin Yang, Impact Mechanics, and has remixed artists such as The Advent, Ben Sims, Eric Sneo, Angel Alanis, Damon Wild, DJ T-1000, Virgil Enzinger, Robert Armani, Dave The Drummer, Dj Preach, Mike Humphries, Spiros Kaloumenos, Torsten Kanzler, Bas Mooy, Housemaster Boyz and many more. Besides his sound of hard, funky, deep bass lines he is renowned for, he has also been known productions in tech- house, minimal and experimental sounds, under several aliases like Loudon Kleer, Luther Miek, Beat Therapy and LK. and last but not least, he is also known for his co-productions with artists like The Advent, Industrialyzer, Michaelangelo, DJ Slot among others. His unique sound, taste, and technique, granted him a position on some of the best mega events like; Awakenings, Chateau Techno, TGV (The Netherlands), Evolve (Canada), Nature One, Syndicate, Ruhr in Love (Germany), Rock in Rio (Portugal), Technolandia (Portugal), Aquasella, (Spain), Liberty White (Belgium), Decibel (Holland), Global Vision Festival (France) & Apokalypsa (Czech Republic). A.Paul has rocked some of the hottest clubs like; Tresor, U60311, Lehmann (Germany), Sullivan Room (USA), Fabrik , Makumba, Row 14, Moog, Industrial Copera (Spain), Perron, Panama, Poema (The Netherlands), Locomia , Rocks, Kremlin, Pacha (Portugal), Qube (Italy), Inox Club (France) & many more. EPISODE 40 CELEBRATION featuring legendary techno head REPETE!!! Please make sure to read the awesome BIO and check out the interview beneath. A true legend was born when RePete broke through the barriers of techno music and brought it to the next level. He was the first to introduce techno music to New York City nightlife and it earned him his true legendary status. The New York City club scene had exploded due to the new sound and vibe RePete introduced. One of RePete’s biggest accomplishments throughout his career was a performance in front of 16,000 people in Dortmund, Germany called May Day. RePete has worked with various talented artists such as Josh Wink, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Audio Injection, Drumcell, Alex Bau, Lex Gorrie, A-Brothers, Carl Cox, Joey Beltran, Hans Bouffmyhre, Damon Wild, Victor Calerdone, Sven Vath, Moby, Prodigy, Jellybean Benitez, Charlie Low Noise, Mental Theo, Rob Gee, and DBX Dan Bell. We hope you enjoy this weeks podcast, and don't forget to follow Monument for more techno, art, and upcoming events! Where was this mix recorded? 1. The mix was recorded at a club in Brooklyn NY called Output. Output one of the best club in NY. When playing my set I was feeding off of the crowd and the crowd was feeding off of me. To keep it simple "It was MASSIVE!" With many years of techno experience, how would you say the scene has evolved? 2. Too keep it simple. I have way over 10 years of techno experience. It all started out in the early 90's at a club called Limelight in NYC. It was at the Limelight where we exposed techno to crowds of 2,000-3,000 followers every Friday night. The party was called Future Shock. What is one of your most memorable nights? 3. The most memorable night was performing in Germany at Mayday. Me and Damon Wild started a group called Equinox and we where popular in Germany. We where act before Moby that night. I was nervous as staring down at a loaded shot gun. The MC announced us and there was dead silence. We where having technical problems. The crowd was whistling and cheering. All of a sudden the kick drum came through the sound system and the crowd went insane. It was like some one scored the game winning goal in a playoff Football game. What has kept you going? 4. Passion and the love of music. After the Limelight I was burnet out. I took years off from music. During that time I felt an empty void in my life. Now I feel like myself again. Any extra words for us youngstas? 5. Find a group of people who are on the same head as you. Work together, share ideas, learn together. Stay humble and ask other local DJ's who are big in the scene if there is any way they can help out. Pay your dues. Don't get discouraged and keep your head up. It takes time to built an empire.
Damon Wild (PL) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 59 Pt. 2 Bio: Damon Wild’s musical career started off as a DJ playing a range of musical styles from Kraftwerk / Cabaret Voltaire / New Order to early acid house on his home town radio WTUL in New Orleans. It was in 1990 when he moved to NYC to become a key player in the underground techno scene. While working at local record stores, Sonic Groove & Vinylmania, Damon released his first EP “Unleash the Groove” on the legendary Strictly Rhythm stamp. After several releases on various labels, Damon built his name as a producer of hard, dark acid and synth-fuelled techno stompers. As Experimental (EX) was being set up as his first record label in 1992, Damon hit it big with the rave anthem “Rave Generator” under the group name Toxic Two. The tune reached the top ten in the UK charts and was his biggest commercial success. Even though Experimental records were relatively short lived, it was crucial in showcasing the talents of artists like Freddie Fresh, Tim Taylor and Woody McBride. It was then that Damon set up his second label, Synewave, and he still continues to run it and record for it successfully. On Synewave, Damon released some of his biggest underground tunes, such as “Bang the Acid” and “Afghan Acid”, both recorded with UK’s Tim Taylor. At the same time he was signing other producers to the label: Woody McBride, Freddy Fresh, Mark Bell (LFO), Joey Beltram, Heiko Laux, Steve Stoll, to name a few. In 1988, Damon released his first full length album “New Electronica” under the alias Morph (produced with Dennis Ferrer). Damon was also heavily producing solid minimal productions such as “Avion” and his Subtractive Synthesis series. After more than 15 years dj’ing and producing in the USA, Damon decided to move to Europe in 2001, where he released his second full album “Color Theory” for the Belgian based Music Man stamp. With some EP’s in between, 2004 witnessed his third full album “Downtown Worlds” on the German Kanzleramt stamp. With releases on all these labels (Code Red, Strictly Rhythm, Buzz, Reload, Music Man, Kanzleramt, Synewave, ?!) Damon Wild keeps crossing the globe for new inspiration. Damon Wild is well known for his experienced dj style ranging from underground acid, classic techno, pumping minimal to the latest in new electronic sounds from around the globe. His top priority is to balance between his likings and that of the crowd to create a special techno experience. Tracklist: 01. Mono-Region - First Contact // Naked Lunch Records 02. Mark Rogan (IRL) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 50 Pt. 4 Bio: When it comes to dance music, Belfast might not be the first destination most people would turn to for raw, uncompromising Techno of a global standard, however in recent years all that has changed. A troubled past and on-going rioting by minority groups has for a long time held the city, and country at large, back from making true progress. As a direct reaction to this, however, an underground and hedonistic club culture blossomed as a younger generation, determined to take a different approach to life and community, took hold. Leading the way in this development is one of the capital city’s most prolific sons, Mark Rogan - accomplished producer, sound designer and DJ - and integral part of the Northern Irish electronic scene. Born and raised in North Belfast, Mark was exposed to and instilled with a passion for music from an early age, taking special influence from his father’s record collection, which exposed him to everything from late 60s/70s rock to disco to 80s electronica. Bored by the mainstream output of radio, he quickly launched himself into record buying, a hobby which began at an early age. One of the great turning points for Mark, however, was the teenage discovery of House, Hard Trance, Techno and Hardcore that took off in the nineties. “I had to settle with buying or copying tapes, which I got off my cousins who went to the clubs. They were some of the best days of their lives - it was a total release to the strains of growing up in the shit going on here. I learnt first hand that music itself was a common bond and brought people together.” It was at this point that Mark got his hands on his first set of belt-driven turntables along with a basic two channel mixer. Throwing himself into making mix-tapes for friends and DJ-ing at house parties was just the beginning. His cousin, who had been caught by the techno bug after living in Amsterdam, taught him how to beat match and mix properly, helping to introduce him to the proper underground sound of Techno. Moving away from the Hardcore and Trance scene, he started playing, listening and exploring further the musical roots of Techno: from the deep and soulful, from Detroit to Chicago, from the funky to the hypnotic and atmospheric. Techno consumed him, as he, himself, admits, “I became totally engrossed by Techno. I loved everything about it; the feelings, the emotions that came with it.” Soundtracking his day-to-day life from then on were artists including: Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance, Richie Hawtin, Carl Craig, Robert Hood, Chris Liebing, Dave Clarke, Surgeon, Regis, Ben Sims, Speedy J, Umek, Carl Cox, Trevor Rockcliffe, Vince Watson, Paul Mac, Chris Cowie, Mauro Picotto, Marco Carola, Adam Beyer, Slam, Steve Rachmad, Joris Voorn, Smith & Selway, Ian Pooley, Damon Wild, A.Paul, Jamie Anderson, Hardcell & Grindvik, Mhonolink, Joey Beltram, The Advent, Rino Cerrone, Michael Burkat, Lars Klein, Bas Mooy, DJ Rush, Felix Krocher, Sven Wittekind, Pet Duo. This feverish consumption of music and dedication to DJing led quite naturally to his first attempts at making beats on an old computer. An ignited passion for making his own productions then saw Mark take music onto college education, gaining distinctions in First Diploma Performing Arts in Music, a National Diploma in Music Technology and a City & Guilds Diploma in Multi-track Recording and Composition. Armed with this technical knowledge and grounding in music theory, Mark continued to lay down industrial-strength slabs of Techno and began sending out demos. It was not long before he was picked up by small independent label, Hereket, managed by up-and-coming Techno producer, Ilgar Khaligov. This first EP, Boriquas was a bold statement of intent and a warning sign of what was to come in from succeeding releases. Since then he has released on Paul Mac’s Sula Muse Recordings, Chris Cowie’s Bellboy Records, Labrynth Recordings, Triple Recordings, M_Rec Digital, Static Recordings, DSNT Records and A. Paul's Naked Lunch. With a theory of producing quality over quantity central to his beliefs, no Mark Rogan production is ever the same. His characteristic wave of other-worldly, off-kilter stabs, distorted pads, bolstered by 909, bass-heavy kicks goes some way to describing his signature, uncompromising sound, but in each production there is something new to discover. His undying passion, talent and commitment as a producer and DJ sets him apart from many working in the field of Techno nowadays. 2013 will see Mark release further new material and continue to climb the ranks within the global techno community. Right place, right time. It's an old cliché, but it's one that's been the definition of New York house legend Dennis Ferrer's musical career. Just as the dance music world was heading into the world of afro-centric house, Ferrer was there. And then, when it began to embrace the mix of tech and soul, Ferrer was there again, leading the way with his impeccable productions. And as a protege of Kerri Chandler, it makes complete sense that Ferrer's current sound lies firmly in the deep house realm laid out by his old teacher years earlier. Ferrer has brought that anything goes approach to his newest venture, Objektivity. Low slung and deep, Objektivity is a cutting-edge label in touch with its time, putting a uniquely American spin on the deep house revival that is currently making waves in Europe. And with releases from the likes of the young phenoms the Martinez Brothers (who are going from strength to strength) and classic New York house heads like Timmy Regisford and Quentin Harris, it's obvious that Ferrer doesn't regard the label as a vanity project. Objektivity is a living, breathing thing - one that's set to drop bombs on the dancefloor for years to come. So it's with great pleasure that the 6th Cablecast comes from Ferrer himself. With his Objektivity London showcase ready to drop here at Cable on 11th May, it's perfect timing for you to experience this legend at work. Enjoy! This mix was recorded live from Miami. Talk us through the equipment you use to perform on? I can recall that it was done on 2 Pioneer CDJ-2000's , A Pioneer DJ-900M Nexus Mixer and my Macbook Pro with Traktor Scratch Pro2 software. I use USB sticks in the cdj's that contain .wav controller files for controlling Traktor via the cdj's. I also have these USB sticks as a backup with a few months worth of songs just in case my laptop crashes. The show can continue on with hopefully not a hitch. If travelling constraints and venue specifications weren't an obstacle, What would your ideal gig set up be? On a beach in Aruba with a killer Funktion One sound system and with a manageable 1,000 people losing their minds dancing and cheering to the likes of us. No fashion statements...No fancy clothes or sneakers on...just a shorts and flip flops or bikini's and flip flops code allowed. You travel all over the globe to perform, is there anywhere in the world that you would say is your favourite place to play, and why? I've been asked this countless times and i used to say all these exotic countries and what not. But honestly NYC is my favourite place to play...why? Because it is my birthplace...it is where I got my start...my heart and soul..my pain and pride. When you rock it out there and see all the familiar faces and industry people that have been coming out for years smiling and having a good time...you know you've been accepted. Acceptance after all is what we're all after right? That is part of the prize in life as money isn't all it's cracked up to be some times. Your Objektivity imprint seems to have a real family vibe about it. Releases from people close to home in New York such as The Martinez Brothers and Andre Hommen. How did it all start? I very much keep to myself. Sort of a loner I'm told....lol. So on the odd occasion that I do let people in I tend to keep them close. You become part of my extended family. It's a natural progression. So usually if you're in anything having to do with objektivity it's usually because I really like you. We keep it tight and a bit exclusive. Has it taken the musical direction you expected it would? What's in store for us in the future release wise? I've never had an intentionally particular musical direction when it came to Objektivity except that i wanted our records to always be different than what's always going on. To walk that fine edge between being current and too ahead of the curve. It's always just been if I like it and it fits with what's going on in my head and somehow in our scene then yeah! what the hell let's do it. I could sit here and come up with some asinine "the spirits speak to me kind of thing" but honestly it's more of a floating butterfly effect. The sound of house music is forever changing, you are a prime example of how to stay relevant in today’s rapidly evolving scene. It seems like you have made the transition from your roots in soulful house to accommodate a more current deep sound. Have you enjoyed this journey, and where do you see the state of house music 10 years from now? This is not the first time i've done this nor will it be the last. Before my soulful house roots I had techno roots with Damon Wild and Synewave. I live this.....in order to continue living it one must evolve. Just because you get older doesn't mean the front door to the club does also. It's a challenge to keep on trying to reinvent but that's what makes life fun and interesting. People will always need dance music in some shape or form. Where will it be 10 years from now on? Who knows...but I can guarantee you that i'll be there still trying to be relevant. lol. We're very pleased to have the London leg of your Objektivity tour here at Cable. It's a great collection of artists, together, under one roof. How do you see the night unfolding? I've long ago stopped trying to be Nostradamus and offering predictions. LOL. I just know...I'm going to have fun...play records...dance...and act like I love life...because you only get one shot at it. I'll bring the music ...you bring the open mind and somewhere in the middle we'll connect and lose track of time for a while. What can we expect from your performance? How much preparation goes into your DJ gigs? I totally fly by the seat of my pants. That's what dj'ing is all about no? What's the fun in a prepped set? That's cheating on the exam! You look at the crowd...and you either guess right or you guess wrong. Guess wrong too many times and you suck....guess right the majority of the times and you're a hero. I don't like falling into the suck region too many times....it's not fun. LOL. Anything else we should know about on the horizon? Any special collaborations? The only thing you should know...is that i'm not going anywhere any time soon...lol. ------------------------------------------------ Objektivity London Showcase // Saturday 11th May // Cable, London DJs: Dennis Ferrer, Sis, Julian Perez, Andre Hommen, Jack Fell Down Click for more info / tickets
A.Paul (POR) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 34 Pt. 2 Bio: A.Paul was born in Lisbon, Portugal in November 1971, and his career started in 1986, although his first contact with music was made at a very early stage, mainly through the hands of his older sister that would regularly listen to disco, funk, and electro sounds in the 70's. After buying his first decks and mixer, including a couple of years of bedroom practice, he organized a few parties himself and later acquired his first residencies in clubs, through the hand of J.Daniel, who was one of the most respected Portuguese DJs in the 90's. He was the owner of Question of Time Records, a vanguard record shop and record label, where A.Paul would later release his first record "Juice" a remarkable masterpiece that was played by many top DJs worldwide and licensed to various labels and compilations. By then he was also already playing quite a lot as free lancer, in a growing market. Portugal was at its peak, in terms of electronic music popularity and A.Paul was playing at one point every weekend on different parts of the country. It was inevitable that he would decide to stick to this option for his career, as opposed to be resident in a club, where he would be more limited in terms of music taste.E-mailArtist NameBeatport URLWebsiteArtist Bio In 1997 he joins the X-Club, the most important DJ Agency and party organizer in Portugal. All the top cats were signed to X-Club, and so was A.Paul, first as a supporting artist, and later part of the agency's top artists too. This period was very important for A.Paul, and his growth was remarkable, because he had the chance to meet and play with all the major techno and house artists in the world. Other projects developed by A.Paul at that time include sound engineering, journalism and also graphic and web design, activities that would become also important on his next projects.A.Paul was voted best Portuguese techno DJ in 2000, 2001, and 2002 by the readers of Dance Club, the main electronic music media vehicle in Portugal. From the "Paradise Called Portugal" coined years before by international media, Portugal was now a place with a stagnated scene, and techno was probably the first genre to suffer. It was time for change, this crisis lead him to invest his time in a music production career, that was quiet for a few years due to the higher demand for DJ previously. DJ HI-SHOCK (AUS) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 9 pt.2 Bio: Inspired by the early electronic sounds of Detroit and Chicago, along with nascent German techno and the underground sounds of Belgian New Beat, Hi-Shock struck out on his own DJing career in 1988. Ever since -- always striving to perfect his skills -- he's taken both vinyl-spinning and production work to the highest level. In recent years Hi-Shock has developed and helms the wildly successful Elektrax Music label group (which includes Elektrax Recordings, Gynoid Audio, Android Muziq, Darknet and Hypnotic Room). DJ Hi-Shock has also released his own sounds through other labels like Elektrax Recordings, Nachtstrom Schallplatten, Naked Lunch, Gynoid Audio, Darknet -- along the way being charted and played by the likes of Tommy Four Seven, Luke Slater, Chris Liebing, Damon Wild and Dave Clarke amongst others. On top of these inroads, DJ Hi-Shock has remixed the likes of Ken Ishii, Gayle San, Chris Finke, Bas Mooy, Octave, Kai Randy Michel, DAVE The Drummer, BCR Boys or Ade Fenton, and furthermore performed alongside a wad of ultimate DJ/producers like Sven Väth, Kevin Saunderson, Oliver Lieb, Thomas P. Heckmann, Mijk van Dijk, Jammin' Unit, Industrialyzer, and many more over the years. Currently the DJ Hi-Shock trademark sound is driving/underground Techno, with a fusion of pounding drums, stunning percussion riffs, darker vibes and hypnotizing rhythms. Tracklist: 01. who is ricardo ferro? Ricardo is also known as DJ Ferro since his debuts in the world of djing, bringing us back to 1988. Very loyal to the electronic culture club since then, Ferro has become a key name of the Portuguese underground music scene. Born in Lisbon in 24th April 1973, he spent his early days in the well-known region of Algarve, southern Portugal. When he turned 18 years old he moved back to Lisbon on his own, not only because the attraction of the big city life but mainly because of his strong desire of getting to know artists and people involved in the dance scene. He was eager to make a breakthrough as well as establishing his style and own sound to a bulky audience. It was only a matter of time, for those who remember, before his name started circulating around the elite and was being offered to playing in such places like: Locomia, Rocks, ZONA+, Coconuts, Plateau, Alcantara-Mar amongst others. When still working in the record shop Bimotor in charge of the imports, he formed a collective with A.paul and Wogz, two successful Techno Dj's in Portugal, which would lead to the creation of a specific Portuguese techno label - Squeeze Records. Squeeze 001 ( A.paul & Ferro) appeared to be the so much wanted breakthrough, a smash! The right music was released at the right time and obviously the interest of the public kept growing. The next step was a very much awaited and acclaimed Compilation. Outside Portugal boundaries the success was discreet but flourishing. The German distributor Neuton shipped Squeeze around Europe and DJs like Sven Vath, Chris Liebing and Hardfloor charted it. At a certain point, during the 'boom' of dance music in Portugal, X-Club acknowledged his work with a invitation to be one of the X artists, were he finally was able to set up his career. Places like Colombia and Slováquia, playing with DJs like Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, Richie Hawtin, The Advent, Mike Dearborn, DJ Rush, Derrick Carter, Dave Angel, Darren Price, Stacey Pullen, DJ Sneak, Green Velvet, Josh Wink, Damon Wild, Steve Stoll, Adam Beyer, Ben Long and many others, are common to him. Today Ricardo Ferro is the Label Manager of FAROL, the label of Media Capital and also the exclusive distributor of Warner Music in Portugal. His love for production is still alive, and he regularly delivers his new material. He also keeps his agenda full with gigs in Portugal and abroad. In less than a decade, Ricardo Ferro managed to impose his fresh sound and smooth style with a clever blend of Techno, Techouse, Hardhouse, Progressive House, House and even Electro, his recent collaboration with Mourah under the project Echosonic is an example of it. Year after year he proves to his faithful audience to be an innovative, versatile and open-minded artist. Today Ricardo Ferro is the A&R of ZONA MUSICA, a respected Portuguese label and distributor (of such labels as !K7). His love for production is still alive, and he regularly delivers his new material. He also keeps his agenda full with gigs in Portugal and abroad. In less than a decade, Dj Ferro managed to impose his fresh sound and smooth style with a clever blend of Techno, Techouse, Hardhouse, Progressive House, House and even Electro, his recent collaboration with Mourah under the project Echosonic is an example of it. Year after year he proves to his faithful audience to be an innovative, versatile and open-minded artist. One who deserves all the respect he has been rewarded with. dj ferro discography Released A.Paul & Ferro "Squeeze Gently Ep" (Squeeze001) Dj Ferro "Shakuachi Ep" (Squeeze007) Dj Ferro "Blue Vibration" (WorldMusicLP001) Dj Ferro "Juicy Kisses" (upfront) Dj Ferro "Fire ep" (Naked Lunch 008) Dj Ferro "Moribayassa EP" (Naked Lunch 025) Remixes Mesa "Divagadora" Viper "Sanzala" (Squeeze) Humanoyd "Mr Galaxy" (Squeeze) Dj Wogz "Gloopuk" (Squeeze) As a producer Oscar Baia "Z" (Squeeze) mixed CDs by dj ferro Squeezed Hardheads (Squeeze Records / MCA) The G Spot (Genesis / Zona Musica) Secret Society mixed by A.
