Happy Spooky Wednesday, everybody!Thank you very much to Kortenie for the listener request this week! Kala's going to tell you all about Devil's Island in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Some say that Casper Henneberry, a resident of Devils Island, saw the Devil in the form of a halibut. Yup. You read that right... Devil Fish. The next day, he was found drowned. There have also been reports of ghostly apparitions, strange fires, and other unexplained phenomena. It turns out this isn't the only location in Halifax Harbor with strange occurances. McNabs Island has a bunch of strange local legends associated with the land. And St. Paul's Church has an odd anomaly in one of its windows. Is this Canadian town cursed? Is it just so old that it can't help but have a few ghosts? Are we really buying the story about the Devil Fish? Guess you'll have to listen to find out!
Send us a textAre we living in the end times? Rivers are turning red, food prices are skyrocketing, locust plagues are back, and planes are literally falling from the sky. In the last two months, deep-sea creatures like the oarfish and devil fish have surfaced—an ominous sign? Plus, massive earthquakes are shaking the world, and while NASA says Apophis won't wipe us out in 2029, a newly discovered meteor in 2032 might.Meanwhile, the battle for airplane seats continues—plus-size travelers in the U.S. demand bigger seats, while in Vietnam, a 660lb woman needed a tow truck just to reach the hospital. Also, is Netflix still worth the price? And why are people dropping $2,900 for a Super Bowl ticket but whining about expensive eggs? All this and more on R2 Cents! rWotD Episode 2655: USS Hawkbill (SSN-666) Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Saturday, 10 August 2024 is USS Hawkbill (SSN-666).USS Hawkbill (SSN-666), a Sturgeon-class attack submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the hawksbill, a large sea turtle. The name perpetuated the inadvertent misspelling of "hawksbill" in the naming of the first ship of that name, USS Hawkbill (SS-366), a Balao-class submarine launched in 1944. USS Hawkbill (SSN-666) was the eighteenth of 39 Sturgeon-class nuclear-powered submarines that were built.Hawkbill was sometimes called "The Devil Boat" or the "Devilfish" because of her hull number (666), from chapter 13 of the Book of Revelation, in the Bible's New Testament, which begins "And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea...." and ends "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred threescore and six;" and the resulting association in Christianity of the number 666 with the Devil and the Antichrist. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:24 UTC on Saturday, 10 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see USS Hawkbill (SSN-666) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kevin.
It's been a long time coming, but your aquatic explorers here at Horror Movie Night have uncovered a genetically-engineered prehistoric fish with freaking tentacles on its butt and it's not too happy about being made by some horny scientist and his boss's cheating wife (they were going to make a fortune off of this somehow, but get killed before they quite figure out how). Long story short, we're talking about Lamberto Bava's DEVIL FISH (1984), aka MONSTER SHARK, aka DEVOURING WAVES, aka MONSTER FROM THE RED OCEAN, aka SHARK: RED IN THE WATER. We don't know why it needed so many names, but this goofy Italian sci-fi horror has so many twists that it's more than a giant killer fish movie, bleeding into giallo and exploitation at times. It needs to be seen to be believed, but we still try our best to convey just how wild this one is! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this week's episode the party attempts to infiltrate Ripetide Cove, the home of the Grindylows, in search of their friend Sandara Quinn. If they falter here then their bones will never be recovered again, and their names lost to all history. Listen as they take the dive into eternity! GM Notes Pathfinder 2nd Edition Conversion Notes (SPOILERS BELOW): So in going into this week's prep I could have sworn that there was a Pathfinder second equivalent to the Devilfish from this first Skull and Shackles AP book 1. Much to my surprise mid episode my notes were incomplete and I had to call an audible and a 5 minute intermission while I cobbled together a monster... This Devilfish is the result. Taking the abilities of the first edition monster and grafting them onto a 2nd edition shark. The end result...was terrifying! It certainly proved to be the challenge of the episode after the party smashed through a huge grouping of Grindlows. By: Jules Verne (1828-1905) An early science fiction novel written by the second most translated author, French writer Jules Verne, the classic tale depicts an incredible sea expedition on board a state-of-the-art submarine. First published in 1870 and a part of the Voyages Extraordinaires series, the novel is regarded as one of the most thrilling adventure stories and one of Verne's greatest pieces of work. Immersed in themes of exploration, avant-garde technology, and man's insatiable desire for knowledge and scientific progression, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea has been an influence for many writers as well as an inspiration for numerous film adaptations. The novel kicks off when rumors spread about sightings of a mysterious sea monster, initially thought to be a giant narwhal. This instigates the United States government to organize an expedition in hopes of hunting down and destroying the ravaging creature. Consequently, French marine biologist Pierre Aronnax is invited to join the expedition, who takes with him his trusted servant Conseil, along with expert harpooner Ned Land, and accordingly the trio set about the search. Following a lengthy pursuit, the ship finally finds and attacks the monster but to no avail, as the impact hurls the three men into the water. In an attempt to grasp the hide of the monster, the men come to a startling discovery as they realize the supposed monster is in fact a submarine. The men are then captured and brought inside the futuristic vessel, which they later find out is named Nautilus, and meet its enigmatic commander and creator, Captain Nemo. So begins the journey on board the Nautilus, as its three coerced guests travel across all the world's seas visiting different underwater locations while witnessing the most bizarre, yet gripping marvels of the oceanic depths. Shipwrecks, giant squids, sharks, lost cities, coral reefs, whirlpools and an eccentric captain are just some of the obstacles separating the trio from their freedom. An exhilarating subaqueous adventure through unseen wonders, Verne's detailed and prophetic imagination propels the novel and secures its position as a literary classic and a pristine model for science fiction enthusiasts. Time Codes: 00:00:26 - Introduction 00:02:29 - More listener mail! 00:06:57 - Iceland 00:30:51 - Fukushima Devil Fish 01:04:49 - Wrap up 01:06:13 - Contact us On the March manga episode, Shea and Derek discuss a couple of experimental works. They begin with Yuichi Yokoyama's Iceland, released last fall from Retrofit Comics/Big Planet Comics. The plot of this book is minimal -- two characters are searching for a third, they find him, and then they drive off in a taxi -- and it's something like you might find in Samuel Beckett narrative. But it's Yokoyama's art that propels the text. As the guys discuss, there is something kinetic, claustrophobic, and even frantic about the visuals. For Derek, futurism comes to mind. After that they look at a book that both Shea and Derek have been eagerly anticipating, Susumu Katsumata's Fukushima Devil Fish(Breakdown Press). The core text comprises nine short stories that provide a diversity of tone. The first two are the most contemporary, originally published during the 1980s and focusing on the dangers of nuclear power. The remaining pieces reflect Katsumata's style from the late 1960s into the early 1970s, stories originally appearing in the legendary Garo andCOM. Some of these are folklore-inspired narratives, presenting a pre-modern Japan inhabited by kappa and tanuki and reminiscent of the stories found in Red Snow. Others are instances of "I-manga," introspective and highly personal pieces driven more by tone than cohesive storyline. Four critical and biographical essays, two written by Katsumata himself, round out the collection.
Justin Young was working as a mechanical engineer on an Marine Corps base before his surging bankroll gave him the confidence to pursue a career in poker. His first major score came when he finished second at the 2008 WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic, earning $936,700. He continued to post good results, with many close calls along the way, before he broke through to win his first World Poker Tour title at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown in 2016 for $669,161. He now has $4.8 million in live tournament earnings. Most recently, he appeared on Poker After Dark, posting big wins in the high-stakes cash game. Highlights from this interview include painting your own walls, beans in your ears, how the apple can fall far from the tree, checkmate leads to punching, the Varkonyi effect, loose plane bolts, a thorough 30-point check list, a unique nature vs. nurture test, getting shell-shocked by Dan Bilzerian, getting one-upped by Chino Rheem, getting back-roomed at the Wynn, winning at the 7-2 game, a big bet with Devilfish, and the joy of delivering sandwiches.

On the very last special Hawaii episode of the Revival League Podcast, Greg and Ryan chat with Carolina Hidalgo, co-host of the Movie Sign with the Mads podcast with Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff! We chat with Carolina about her career in stand-up, working with Trace and Frank, and what it's like to be in a horror movie. Also on this episode, Greg waxes nostalgic about fruit, the guys attack Pearl Harbor (the movie, not the naval base), James endures Devil Fish, and Ryan finally delivers justice to sea turtles. All this and a romantic, rain-drenched kiss with Ryan Gosling, on this week's episode of the Revival League Podcast! (This podcast does not represent Alternaversal, Shout Factory or the Kickstarter campaign in any official capacity). EDITOR’S NOTE: In June 2019, this podcast merged with the Damn Dirty Geeks Podcast and became The Damn Dirty Drive-in. These are our classic back catalog episodes, dating back to March 2016. Remember how, during the last episode, Jon Wilson (Golden Age Superman, New 52 Adventures of Superman) and I talked about the first 2 chapters of the 1977 Superman Spectacular? Well, this time out, we cover the final 2 chapters of that story. And this ends up taking so long, that we're going to need a 3rd episode to cover the other feature in this issue, but more on that at the end of the episode. Meanwhile, the incredible J David Weter heads to the 2970s as Superboy and the Legion face the "Wrath of the Devil-Fish!"

The late writer C.S. Lewis said in his book, Miracles, there are two kinds of people, those who believe in miracles and those who don't. This is the story of the gray whales and their birthing sanctuary in San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja Mexico. It begins in the early 1800's, when the Grays suffered mass slaugther there at the hands of American whalers, which didn't end until 1946. By that time the whale population was critically endangered. The mother whales fought valiantly during those days to save their lives and the lives of their babies, and were nicknamed "Devilfish" by the whalers, due to their ferocity. Understandably tensions between whales and humans remained long after the whaling stopped, but then, in 1972 something wonderful happened. A miracle. Special thanks to the wonderful musicians who contributed to this episode of Our Blue World: David Arkenstone "Yosemite," Deuter "Heaven and Earth,"Alasdair Frasier "Lament for Hetch Hetchy," Andrea Centazzo "A Nord Dell Egeo," and Avalon Strings for Breakfast." By: Jules Verne (1828-1905) An early science fiction novel written by the second most translated author, French writer Jules Verne, the classic tale depicts an incredible sea expedition on board a state-of-the-art submarine.
