In this conversation, Jen shares: How she originally got on the path to law school because she was looking for a reason to stay in the city where she went to college for the summer; Why observing women more senior to her in her law firm made her realize that working at a firm was not for her; What caused her realization that she could make her life happen for her instead of feeling like it was just happening to her; How she was advised by a female mentor to ignore mistreatment by a partner because it would be “career suicide”, but bravely spoke up anyway; How she started doing unpaid PR work on the side while working as a lawyer, before realizing it was something companies would pay for; How she dealt with her parents’ negative reactions to her decision to leave the law; How leaving the law ultimately inspired her husband to make his own career change; How she built a PR business from scratch, and the kind of work she’s doing now; Why she tripled her rates overnight, and landed her dream client the next day; Why your experience in law really can help you in so many other careers; and much more! Key Takeaways Covered In The Podcast One of the best ways to find new clients is to decide what kind of work you want to be known for. Once you have started to work for a couple of clients in this area, you will start to become known for ‘your thing’. Whilst taking everything that comes your way seems right to begin with, it can lead you down a path where you dislike the business you’re in. If you are all things to all people, you can not get in a state of flow. Finding new clients is all about consistency. Make sure you’re setting time aside each week to focus on outreach and business development, even if it is just five minutes a day. Your number one resource for new clients is your network. Although it may seem a little off putting, cold pitching is another great way to gain new clients. It’s all about making that personal connection from the start – you want to let them know you are familiar with their products or their values. Your first point of contact should be to get them to speak to you, so end with a strong call to action. When it comes to pitching competitors to your clients, you need to consider the agreement you have with the people you’re already working with. If you have agreed exclusivity, you need to honour that. Alternatively, it’s important not to pigeonhole yourself into only being able to work with one client. To help potential clients see that you’re the person they need to hire, you need to position yourself as an expert in the industry. You need to demonstrate the value you can bring. The one thing you need to remember above all else… One of the biggest fears people have when pitching new clients is that they’re worried about rejection. Whilst rejection isn’t a nice feeling, what is the worst thing that can happen? If they say no, move on. You may find that it takes 10, 20 or 100 emails before you get a yes. Success meant being able to control my own time The hardest part of starting a business is finding customers. The second hardest part of a business is parting ways with a client. This past year, JenerationPR tripled their business, yes 3x, and Jen Berson attributes that success by parting ways with her first, and longest standing client. For most people, that would sound absolutely insane. Yet, when you take a deep honest look at your life and your business, you need to get clear about what's holding you back and where you can deliver value. Throughout this episode, Jen shares how the focus on value helped her scale her business. What was unique about Jen's perspective on value, is it was not limited to the value she provides to her clients, but also to the people on her team and how she can add value to their lives by giving them flexibility in their daily lives. With the shift from print to digital media, you may be asking yourself if PR is still relevant and the impact could it potentially have on your business. Jen Berson know’s a thing or two when it comes to PR. Having spent 10 years in the industry navigating her way to now working with $150 million dollar brand, she’s managed to stay ahead of the curve. Jennifer founded Jeneration PR in 2005 after several years of practicing as a civil litigation attorney. Frustrated with the lack of creativity and slow pace of work in litigation, she began promoting a cosmetics line that she discovered on a trip to Europe and enjoyed it so much that it served as a catalyst to leave the legal field and pursue a full-time career in public relations. Jennifer is now a regularly featured PR & social media expert on American Express OPEN Forum for small business and has been featured in the New York Times, Entrepreneur magazine, Fox 11 News and more. Tune in to hear the real deal on PR and how you can take advantage of the shift to digital, social media and influencer marketing.
