Jesse Rothstein has, and he has a warning. Rothstein, a UC-Berkeley economist who was a top economic advisor in the Obama administration, says we could see the signs of a new recession in a matter of weeks.

Experiencing poverty in childhood can hinder a person's opportunities throughout their own lifetime, and those of their children and grandchildren as well. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently released a report titled “Reducing Intergenerational Poverty.” For this episode, we're joined by Jesse Rothstein, who served as a member of the committee that produced the report. He shares the research and findings on several of the key drivers of intergenerational poverty that the committee identified and examined, as well as what policy approaches may help to interrupt the cycle and why that matters.  Dr. Jesse Rothstein is a Professor of Public Policy and Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously, he was Senior Economist at the U.S. Council of Economic Advisers and then Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of Labor.

Jesse Rothstein is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of ExtraHop Networks, a cyber defense platform that uses cloud-scale AI to help enterprises respond to advanced threats. ExtraHop was acquired by Bain Capital and Crosspoint Capital Partners for $900 million in 2021. On today's episode, Jon Sakoda speaks with Jesse about selection bias for entrepreneurs and how some of his lowest moments as a founder were actually blessings in disguise. Searching For Satisfaction [5:19 - 7:17] - Jesse didn't always know he wanted to be an entrepreneur but he started to feel the itch to prove himself and his ideas. A conversation with his wife about happiness, or lack thereof, helped him to begin the journey to becoming a founder. If you are constantly thinking about how to solve the problems around you, listen to learn more about what pushed Jesse to found ExtraHop.  Pulling Off The Pivot [12:56 - 20:40] - Jesse believes product market fit to be transitory as dynamic markets enable you to find product market fit and then, sometimes, lose it. As the market started pulling ExtraHop towards cybersecurity after years of success in network performance management, the possibility of a pivot seemed risky. Listen to hear how Jesse navigated this choice and invested to get the flywheel going for this new market opportunity.Navigating The Paradox Of Loyalty [20:57 - 25:08] - According to Jesse, there is nothing harder for a founder than watching a loyal employee, who has been with you since the beginning, lose stage fit as the company scales and outgrows them. Stage fit applies to every position in the company and finding the balance of developing existing employees and hiring for this new scale is critical. Listen to learn what questions you should be asking yourself as your company shifts into a higher gear.  Recruiting a Professional CEO [25:31 - 29:57] - While Jesse believes no one is more committed and knowledgeable about the company than the founder, he discusses reasons a board may be ready to make a leadership change. When it came time to recruit a professional CEO for ExtraHop, Jesse focused on establishing a good working relationship, facilitating a productive transition and respecting boundaries. For founders looking to bring on a professional CEO, listen to hear how to minimize friction during a leadership change. The [Exit] Road Less Traveled [30:08 - 34:00] - While looking for additional capital to invest for growth, Jesse and ExtraHop identified an opportunity with Bain Capital. The private equity investment, while not as common, can prove beneficial for founders looking to increase capital, enable liquidity for early investors and employees and maintain control. Listen to hear Jesse's thoughts on how this transaction has performed vs goals, so far.

Modernizing Your Enterprise Sales Strategies | Jesse Rothstein - 1570

The Sales Evangelist

Selling is constantly evolving. There are techniques and strategies you should implement today to set a precedent for long-term success for those looking to thrive in enterprise selling. In today's episode of The Sales Evangelist, Donald is joined by Vice President and lead trainer at Empire Selling Jesse Rothstein to discuss his tips to modernize enterprise selling. Modern challenges in the enterprise selling environment: A considerable challenge is the continued expansion and growth of organizations making decisions with a committee or group model. More people involved in the decision make it harder to track, maintain, and influence necessary stakeholders.  Because committees complete research before reaching out to salespeople, it's more difficult for the seller to show a differentiation point. 75% of people are groups and committees are prepared to make a decision before they contact a seller. Three core pillars to modernize sales selling strategy: Build your digital brand. Sellers understand that their digital brand is what buyers will evaluate as they undergo their research. Your network is imperative. It's not what you know but who you know.  Leveraging your network to get into new organizations and make additional connections helps create a stronger sales strategy. Content: Do you have a thought-out, pragmatic, and consistent strategy for sharing content? Buyers want to know your opinion, your industry, and even who you are as a person.  Creating a digital brand: Acknowledge that selling is digitally-focused. A few decades ago, your brand was done by the initial physical impression. And while those days aren't over, they are less frequent. If you're a seller who doesn't buy into digital branding, that's akin to showing up to a meeting in your pajamas. Or with bad breath. Allocate time to determine every point your digital brand touches, consider owning the domain rights to your first and last name, and build out the social profiles that might be involved in a conversation. Utilize your network: It's always easier to get business from people you currently do or have done business with. Modern sellers can (and should) spend more time with this audience - those via referral. It's an outbound sales skill that doesn't get measured or chartered as outbound work. It's no longer as direct as asking for referrals - it's sharing content and using LinkedIn to get an intro or mention rather than an all-out referral. Build a content strategy: Most sellers do not have a consistent content strategy - just by doing that; you're differentiating yourself. Get conversations started that are around you, your company, and your industry. Before the internet, we'd go to trade shows, public forums, and live demos to hand out flyers, brochures, and demonstrations. Today, you just need an internet connection to make it happen. It's not about creating everything from scratch, but instead taking content, distributing, and creating it to form an opinion. To start, set a calendar appointment for a quiet time and develop a content sharing strategy. Once allocated, choose a free scheduling tool like Buffer or Hootsuite to schedule your content.  Contact Jesse on LinkedIn, visit empireselling.com, and read his book Carry that Quota on Amazon for more great content and information.   This episode is brought to you in part by LinkedIn Sales Navigator. Wow, 100 episodes of pure joy and fulfillment doing this. Thanks for listening, everyone. It's been a wild ride and I'm grateful for the impact and the support along the way. Jesse is a Key Accounts Manager at LinkedIn Sales Solutions where he leverages data, people, and technology to help enhance overall business performance. These were my favorite quotes from the book. "Build Trust by Following Through Simply put, your relationship and brand with coworkers will improve quickly when you do what you say you are going to do." "Understand Your Coworkers’ Personal Goals and Why They Are Doing What They Are Doing This requires recognizing that people measure success in different ways. I have found that everyone has a different internal reason as to why they come to work every day. Many people are focused on making as much money as possible. Some simply want to come to work every day, earn a decent wage, and provide for their family." "Still others have different desires. My point is that if you can figure out what drives your coworkers, you can then figure out ways to help them get closer to their personal goals." Say “Thank You” It is a small act, but saying thank you or expressing it in an email or handwritten note is something your coworkers will appreciate." "While I know during the end of quarter or the end of year, there may be time-sensitive communications and tasks that need to get done, I find that nothing is super mission-critical during “off-work” hours on most nights and weekends. But I still see most salespeople “remaining connected” during these “off-work” hours. Checking emails on their mobile device may only take three to five minutes, but it enables their mind to remain “on” and thinking about work. I would argue that this interferes with their productivity during work time. As a result, over time, these salespeople will actually run into more time challenges because they are working longer hours with less productivity per hour." "Maintain One Master Calendar for Your Entire Life I have seen people attempt to keep multiple calendars for business and personal, and I find it does not work. Pick a calendar system in digital or physical form (e.g., a notebook planner), and stick to it. Most digital calendars sync seamlessly with your mobile device to help you track appointments and tasks. (I will share my system later in the book.) That way, you can consistently monitor how you are balancing your free time and work time and make sure you are giving yourself the time you need to recharge." "The bottom line is: you are not just selling a product. You are selling yourself and your personal brand. Thus, if you can tell a story, adapt to different settings, and employ specific techniques, you have an opportunity to differentiate yourself and enhance your brand in the process." "Reduce decisions. Each day, we are all asked to make decisions as part of our lives. Reducing the number of decisions you need to make each day will enable you to direct your brainpower to other, more important things. Basic decisions like what you’ll wear to work, what you need to pack for a business trip, or what you’ll be eating for lunch can slow you down and hamper your productivity." You will enjoy this book if you are a business owner or quota-carrying sales professional or if you are thinking about making a switch to being a professional sales rep. My top ten takeaway from the book are 1. Truly commit yourself to the art and craft of sales and solving problems. 2. Respect and appreciate the journey. 3. Relationships are the key to life. 4. Intentional plan and execute on what legacy you want to leave behind. 5. Mental and physical wellness is the key to long term sustainable success. 6. Mentorship and implementing feedback will help you grow in life. 7. Evaluate what you are about now that we have time to reflect and be with our thoughts more often during this pandemic. 8. Kindness, attitude, and appreciation go a long way. 9. Time Management is the key to success. 10. Eliminate decisions so that you have more mental energy to be productive. Summer vacations are over, children are returning to school, and another Labor Day is upon us. For many, it is a time to pause and reflect on the nation's workforce and the state of labor today. What have the most recent decades meant for the labor movement? If earlier generations bore witness to a strong union tide, what has become of it? "It's been a hard time for labor unions," said this week's In Depth guest, Jesse Rothstein, professor of public policy and economics at the University of California, Berkeley, with affiliations in the Department of Economics and the Goldman School of Public Policy. He is also the director of the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE); the co-director of the California Policy Lab; and the co-director of the Opportunity Lab. He previously served as Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of Labor and as Senior Economist with the Council of Economic Advisers, Executive Office of the President, both in the Obama Administration. He discusses with this week's In Depth host, Rebecca Corral, a change in culture, how legal decisions have impacted the labor movement, and whether there has been an overall "change in norms" as they pertain to labor. It's impossible to discuss the state of labor in the United States without also considering wages--including lower end wages--where there has been some growth, thanks to minimum wage increases. How does a tight labor market factor into the equation? Over perhaps the past four decades, there have been some wage increases, especially in the late '90s, but otherwise lower end wages haven't "gone much of anywhere." And, of course, that's particularly the case in the public service sector.
