In each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Brian Friel's play Faith Healer is a literary and theatrical masterpiece, acclaimed for the beauty of its language, its innovative form, and the bathetic yet tragic tale of its eponymous character and those tethered to his misfortunes. My guest, Joe Dowling, directed the seminal producation at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1980 and returned there to revive the play more than 40 years later.

I hope you guys are having a great week. It made some money in the cannabis. Uh, this is Elliot lane with cannabis daily as always, thanks to bill Zynga and Aaron Thomas for all your help. We've got some fun news for y'all today. Let's start off right at the top. Uh, with really, I think the big news of the day is sundial S N D L acquires our Canada. The total for this acquisition comes to just under 350 million out. Canada is Canada's largest liquor retailer, privately operating 171 locations. Under three different retail brands. Expansion into liquor will provide a better financial position and more cashflow for Sunday. Uh, as all alcohol, of course does, uh, in investment into Nova cannabis via this acquisition, which is a top five retail footprint in the cannabis space in Canada.I love this in every sense of the word, uh, sundial, uh, well done as much as I love the investments into Endiva, um, and the. Acquisitions they've made of late. I really think sundial has been the best performer of the meme stocks. Uh, and I mean that sincerely, um, next up, why CBD? This is CBD MD announces a research partnership with university of Mississippi are all miss.To identify novel cannabinoids. I see this a lot with CBD companies and it's why I wanted to call it out, you know, looking for that next opportunity, uh, for sales and to make money. Right. Ultimately, I think once, uh, marijuana is legalized, a lot of these CBD companies might be scrambling a bit or might be transitioning their business model. But why is CBD, uh, entering into a university partnership there, uh, to research potentially new cannabinoids in the plant, Columbia care that CCH WF announces opening of their first cannabis dispensary in Missouri. This is their ninth cannabis nationwide and the 75th store in their foot. Overall. So Columbia care trying to keep up, uh, with the likes of truly via that giant acquisition, of course, and curely, but 75 is nothing to shake your head at.I think they're along the lines with other fantastic MSOE, like Verano. Um, you know, obviously GTI up there as well. Uh, speaking of true leave though, they just announced their 93rd dispensary in the state of Florida with the reopening of a dispensary in Kissimmee that was formerly under there, the harvest house, uh, Veridian capital advisors initiate coverage on douchey that's J U S H F was a buy rating and a price target of $5 26.Since Jewishy, uh, they consider juicy and underrated and underestimated top MSO. They have a wonderful footprint and important markets like Illinois, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and they expect douchey to continue growing, uh, and, and expanding their footprint in those key markets to keep up with the other Ms.Sows. Uh, all right. So as we do on every Friday, my good friend, Aaron Thomas joins me for a little powwow on what's happening outside of stocks. Crazy industry. Aaron, how you doing today? My friends what's going on at Elliot and what's going on zinger nation happy Friday. Uh, yeah, back at it again to bring you some fun, uh, news or, you know, you know, however you take it some, some more news, right?Cultural side of the news for the cannabis industry, which I find always interesting. Um, so let's let let's, let's get started. Uh, so to start off a rep Garcia, a Republican from California tweets that LA county board of supervisors has delegated 5 million to LA sheriff department to support the eradication of illegal marijuana grows in their jurisdiction and surrounding areas.Again, that's $5 million to the LA sheriff. To support the eradication of illegal marijuana grows. Now I do kind of want to point out 5 million in the grand scheme of things is not very much. Um, like I, I believe like the caliph, the LA police department, I think their budget is in the bill. Um, but with that being said, the fact that they're delegating any type of respectable amount to the eradication of the black and gray markets, uh, is huge. It's awesome. I love that. I'm sure, you know, companies like wool farms and vibe, uh, co both great public companies out of California. Love that. So that touches on both sides of this. Yeah, absolutely. And once we moved to a more legal market, I think, you know, it's going to be great for the industry as a whole as well.Absolutely. So moving on, uh, more California, no more California news, uh, California, legalizes, smokable, hemp, and food sales in a recent. But they restrict slash ban the sale of Delta eight. So how do you feel about that? Uh, the Delta eight side doesn't surprise me. Uh, there's a lot of people on the CBD hemp side that think, uh, Delta eight is just as big of an addressable market as THC and I just completely disagree.Um, you know, I, I, I take this from a lot of different areas, but I'll go back to an interview I had with CV sciences, CEO, Joe Dowling on cannabis. Who thinks Delta eight is here for a little bit, uh, but will not survive the advancement of the, this industry. Um, there are too many good CPG companies, too many good, uh, THC focused marijuana companies. And there are other cannabinoids that will come to light by then as well. Uh, ultimately Delta aid, I think has an expiration date. Uh, so I think California has gone ahead and, uh, expedited that, um, doesn't surprise me at all. And ultimately I think hemp should be more industrial. Uh, you S I would say anyway.Um, but I, I'm sure a lot of people disagree with me on that, and that's totally fine. Um, but I think hemp has a wide variety of uses. It's a wonderful plant and definitely worth the investment. I just don't think Delta eight will be a part of that long. Yeah, a hundred percent. I agree with you there. Uh, hemp, it has very, hemp is very versatile. And, uh, also I think, um, with, with California legalizing it, uh, they're, you know, moving to a more sustainable market as well. So I think that's great for the. Absolutely my friend, wonderful times, uh, as always in the industry, it has been crazy. Everybody. I do want to make a quick announcement. Next week, October 14th and 15th, Benzinga returns to in-person action with our cannabis capital conference. This is our last one of 2021. Next one will be in Miami in March. So get your tickets for either virtual attendance or if you're in the New York area or want to make a quick trip. Uh, we'd love to have you there be Z. Dot com uh, you can meet me and Erin face-to-face and we'd love that love for that opportunity. That's an Aaron. Thanks so much, my friend, it's always a pleasure. Always a pleasure Elliot. Thank you. Folger Shakespeare Library: Shakespeare Unlimited

"Bless thee, Bottom, bless thee! Thou art translated!" (A Midsummer Night's Dream, 3.1.120-121) What happens when Shakespeare’s work is translated into foreign languages? Is it still Shakespeare? Or does something fundamental to the original evaporate in the process? Scholars and theater artists, with Rebecca Sheir, host of our Shakespeare Unlimited series, look at what constitutes the essence of Shakespeare. A translator can retain the story, characters, and ideas of a play, but the intricate wordplay proves much more difficult. For one thing, it’s impossible to translate Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter into a language like Korean, in which poetry is based on syllable counts, not stresses. And what is to be done with those well-crafted puns? However, translation also opens up possibilities for new depths of meaning, as the familiar recedes and a different perspective takes over. Among those featured in this podcast: - Joe Calarco is the adaptor and original director of Shakespeare’s R&J. - Rupert Chan is a writer and playwright who has translated multiple Shakespeare plays into Cantonese. - Joe Dowling is the artistic director for the Guthrie Theater in Minnesota. - Alexa Huang is a professor of English, theater and dance, East Asian languages and literatures, and international affairs at George Washington University. - Ah-Jeong Kim is a professor of theater history at California State University–Northridge. - Hyonu Lee is a professor at Soon Chun Hyang University in South Korea. ------------------ From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. © Folger Shakespeare Library. SDCF Masters of the Stage

Joe Dowling: In January of 2000, Joe Dowling met with SDC Members and guests at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre to discuss his career in the classics. It is a career that began long before his appointment as Artistic Director at Minneapolis' Guthrie Theatre in 1995, and even before becoming the Artistic Director of Ireland's National Theatre, the Abbey, at the age of 27. As family legend goes, his first artistic note to an actor was at the age of three, and it was instant recognition that he would spend his life on stage. In this interview with former SDCF Executive Director, David Diamond, Joe Dowling tracks his theatre life beginning with stories from his decades as an actor with the Abbey Theatre Company. He began his directing career in the 1960's with children's theater at the Abbey's smaller space, the Peacock theatre, revolutionizing the energy of the company until he was appointed Artistic Director in 1977. He speaks of his time as the Abbey's AD, the collaborative relationships he developed there with playwrights like Brian Friel, and the politics that caused his resignation. He goes on to discuss his American career and its origins at D.C.'s Arena Stage and the Manhattan Theatre Club. Then he covers the process through which he directs a classic production; his methods for preparation and exploration, and his affinity for tech rehearsals. He calls himself an actor's director. He believes the director's role is that of an interpreter more often than a creator. And he maintains that he works best with collaborators he enjoys as people, no matter how good the concept, idea or the design. Originally recorded - January 1, 2000.

Guthrie Theatre Artistic Director Joe Dowling talks about the company's move from its historic home into a brand new facility, including the reaction of the Minneapolis audiences to the shift; his own training as an actor at Ireland's Abbey School of Acting and his swift rise to the position of artistic director at the Abbey at age 29 -- only to depart seven years later; why his post-Ireland career took him to America instead of England; his first New York productions -- an acclaimed "Translations" for Manhattan Theatre Club and a panned "Playboy of the Western World" for Roundabout; why he particularly enjoyed working with American actors when he arrived -- even more than with their Irish counterparts; and why he believes there will never be an American national theatre on the European model.
