John Skinner is a renowned author and videographer with over 50 years of saltwater fishing experience. He is particularly well-known for his expertise in surfcasting for striped bass, albies, and fluke. His "real job" as a computer scientist at the prestigious Brookhaven National Laboratory means he always asks why? This curiosity has served the surfcasting community very well. Over the years, he has contributed to various publications, including On the Water, The Surfcaster's Journal, and Shallow Water Angler. He is known for his methodical and productive approach to fishing. Recently retired, he now splits his time between Eastern Long Island, New York, and Pine Island, Florida. He shares his knowledge through a top-rated YouTube channel and several self-published books. He is one of the authors I find myself rereading the most. You can buy John's books here. In this episode, Peter Jenkins of the Saltwater Edge podcast converses with renowned author and videographer John Skinner. John shares his exhaustive knowledge and personal experiences from a career spanning over 50 years, touching on the importance of learning local fishing spots and minimizing tackle diversity. They also discuss John's work with underwater video footage, providing invaluable insights into fish behavior. The episode offers practical tips for both beginners and seasoned anglers and culminates with John revealing his favorite fish to catch. 00:00 Introduction to the Saltwater Edge Podcast 00:33 Introducing Today's Guest: John Skinner 01:18 John Skinner's Recent Fishing Adventures 02:12 Challenges and Changes in Fishing Locations 04:36 Unusual Fishing Patterns and Observations 10:30 The Popularity of John Skinner's YouTube Channel 12:27 Deep Dive into Bucktail Fishing Techniques 29:57 John Skinner's Analytical Approach to Fishing 34:51 Discussing Pencil Poppers 35:40 Top Water Lures: Pencil vs. Spook 37:47 Choosing the Right Pencil: Plastic vs. Wood 40:07 Insights from Underwater Videos 41:17 Fluke Fishing Techniques 48:15 Blackfish Behavior and Fishing Tips 52:40 Fishing Tips and Techniques 53:53 The Evolution of Fishing Videos 57:10 Final Thoughts and Future Plans
In 1989, 10-year-old Joshua Dennis went missing in Utah's Hidden Treasure Mine. Despite a massive five-day manhunt, Joshua remained unfound, trapped in the dark, cavernous mine without food, water or light. All hope may have been lost had it not been for angelic protection and guidance. In this episode I get to meet Joshua Dennis and Garrett Batty, the man who has written and directed the movie based on this miracle. Joshua and Garrett share a bit about the journey getting the testimony on the big screen, a few of the highlights and what they hope viewers will take from the film. Did Joshua suffer with injuries after the incident? He did share with me (after our recording) that he suffered from frostbite on his toes and feet briefly and there was talk about possible amputation, but praise God his feet were healed and he does not suffer long term effects. John Skinner (a major role in the film) is still alive to see this event captured on screen. Apparently he is even more shy than Joshua, but this warmed my heart to know he is able to celebrate with everyone who lived through this event. Host: Philip Brown, Founder of The Negotiation Club Guest: John Skinner, Business Consultant & Entrepreneur “The essence of negotiation is to understand that not every battle needs to be fought right now.” — Unknown Episode Overview: In this episode of The Negotiation Club Podcast, we are joined by the seasoned negotiator John Skinner, who brings decades of experience in negotiating a vast array of contracts. John delves into the importance of preparation in negotiations, highlighting that while it's possible to prepare for 90% of what is needed—and even up to 99% with thorough brainstorming—there's always that 1% that can catch you off guard, creating an "Oh Shit" moment. It's in these moments that the skill of "parking" an issue becomes invaluable. Instead of panicking or making hasty decisions, staying calm and suggesting that the matter be "parked" for later discussion allows you to keep the negotiation on track and maintain your composure. Why "Parking" is Crucial in Negotiations 1. Prevents Suboptimal Decisions: When an unforeseen issue arises, continuing the discussion without full understanding can lead to less than optimal outcomes. Parking the issue buys you time to gather necessary information and strategise effectively. 2. Maintains Confidence and Control: Pushing forward when unprepared may inadvertently reveal your discomfort or anxiety. Parking the issue allows you to project confidence and control, minimising the risk of the other party leveraging your perceived weaknesses. 3. Improves Strategic Thinking: By parking an issue, you have the opportunity to rethink your strategy, seek advice, and return to the negotiation with a stronger position. This ensures all aspects of the negotiation are handled thoughtfully. Common Mistakes When Parking an Issue 1. Appearing Hesitant or Indecisive: It's crucial to park an issue with confidence. Any hesitation can signal weakness and uncertainty. 2. Failing to Revisit the Parked Issue: Make sure to address parked issues at an appropriate time with adequate preparation. Ignoring them can damage your credibility. 3. Overusing the Technique: Parking too many issues can make you seem unprepared or evasive. Use this technique selectively and strategically. Practicing the "Parking" Technique in Club Meetings 1. Role-Playing Scenarios: Engage in negotiation scenarios where unexpected issues are introduced. Practice parking these issues confidently while maintaining composure. 2. Feedback Sessions: After role-playing, provide feedback on each participant's ability to park an issue. Focus on their body language, tone, and how they plan to revisit the issue. 3. Debriefing: Discuss as a group the parked issues and collaboratively develop strategies to handle them. This helps understand different perspectives and approaches. Negotiation Card: "Parking" We have created a special Negotiation Card titled "Parking" to help you practice this crucial skill in your own negotiations. Each episode of our podcast is accompanied by a Negotiation Card that listeners can use to put the discussed techniques into practice. The "Parking" card is designed to guide you through the process of confidently parking issues during negotiations, ensuring that you remain in control and make well-informed decisions. You can find the "Parking" Negotiation Card and others on our Negotiation Podcast Cards page. Use these cards to enhance your skills and transform your negotiation experiences. I've had the distinct pleasure to host and produce Tasting Room Radio for 17 years. Most weeks we consider featuring some of those stories on the podcast but music, arts and music history seem to carry the day. These two interviews deserve to be featured because they tell the story of the current state of the BC wine industry. The Okanagan has been burned by summer fires and choked by summer smoke, blocked by road closures at the peak of the summer season, deep frozen by two successive winters and disappointingly shunned by liquor governing bodies in Alberta. All the while the BC wine industry is making better and better wines. So it all feels like three steps forward and two back Kimberly Hundertmark, the GM of Okanagan Wine Festivals brings great news. Right now, they are kicking off the Spring Wine Festival all over the Okanagan Valley. It's an amazing collection of events. Huge gatherings like 2024 BC Top 50 and the Wine of the Year. The TASTE series, carefully curated in locations North and South, the Naramata Bench this Sunday, June 2 and the District Wine Village in Oliver Sat-Sun June 8/9 and Saturday, June 8th at the Summer Sips at Spirit Ridge Osoyoos. Kimberly brings all the news and tips for making plans. The complete list of events can be found at www.thewinefestivals.com John Skinner is the co-owner/co-founder of Painted Rock Estate Winery, on the Skaha Bench in Okanagan Falls. If you go to their website www.paintedrock.ca have a look at the wines and also the awards those wines have won over the years. Pages and pages of awards and outstanding reviews. John's comments about his wines and two new releases – Rose and Chardonnay can be found on Tasting Room Radio. www.tastingroomradio.com These comments by John are about the state of the BC wine industry – the good and not-so-good. Above all, it's John's belief in BC Wine. He shows leadership and well-thought-out decision-making. If you're interested in supporting the BC wine industry – and I truly hope you are – then John brings clarity and commitment to all of us. John Skinner reminds us that most of these wineries are owned by small farming families. “support the little wineries first. Find your favourites and support them when you can”
This week we're broadcasting from Painted Rock Estate Winery on the Skaha Bench. Listen for simple and honest updates on that bench and the Naramata Bench from our seasoned winegrower guests, and, most importantly, their solutions on how to move forward. We begin with John Skinner, co-owner of Painted Rock, who brings a 2017 Chardonnay and a 2011 Icon, both showing off the ageing potential of the region's wines; Tony Holler, co-owner of Poplar Grove Estate Winery reveals their first vintage of Pinot Noir and brings their latest rosé; Richard Da Silva, co-owner of Da Silva Vineyards and Winery, showcases their new 3-litre boxes of their popular Vinho Tinto and Vinho Branco, and discusses just how much people love the alternative packaging for portability and ease of use.
John Skinner's videos on YouTube have been viewed nearly 40 million times, and the reason why is pretty simple. John is authentic, smart, informative and very good at explaining the various tactics, gear and techniques he uses to catch striped bass, fluke, snook, tarpon, blackfish and more. In this conversation, we ask John about his background as an engineer and how it has helped him become a better angler. John also shares information on fishing from kayaks, the game fish he chases and what he has planned for his upcoming videos. John has been featured in the pages of Anglers Journal in a story titled "The Bucktail Believer." His YouTube channel is simply called John Skinner Fishing. John Skinner is a humble groundbreaker in striped bass fishing; he stumbled unknowingly into YouTube stardom by quietly and unassumingly filming himself as he taught us how to use tackle we all had, but had been using incorrectly, or not as effectively as could have been. Anglers anxiously await his next post, knowing that it may well provide the detail that could change their fishing fortunes. Skinner approaches his fishing like a true scientist, and the results prove it. He regularly brings in massive fish and lots of them when the rest of us are standing on the beach scratching our heads. John doesn't need $300,000 boats, or rod and reel setups that are unattainable by the average working person. He uses normal gear, lures, and tackle that most of us probably already own to catch fish most people only dream about. On top of that, he freely shares his knowledge and wants to make you a better angler too. Thanks to John for being on the show, and for being such an asset to our industry! https://www.youtube.com/user/jskinner5278/featured Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's the speed of the industry that John Skinner notices most when remarking on changes in mining and finance. On Friday Skinner was a guest on Kitco Roundtable podcast with correspondent Paul Harris and mining audiences manager, Michael McCrae.Skinner has been in and out of the resource sector since starting his career in the mid ‘80s at Yorkton Securities."The thing I've noticed since I was in the industry is just how different and how much faster everything happens because of social media. You used to have to wait for a newspaper to come out. The rumor mill happens and it's instant. It's faster. It's more ferocious and due diligence is that much faster," said Skinner. "I'm really excited for guys in the industry."Success in the industry led him to pursue another passion: wine. In early 2004 he purchased land in Osoyoos and started Painted Rock Winery. He recently returned to the industry with the general lift in resources. Skinnner is independent director at Meridian Mining, which is focused on projects in Brazil.Skinner also noticed how the slow years in the resource sector between '08 and '15 led to a talent gap.“There's a certain age group in the 2008 to 2015 window. [People] weren't coming into the industry,” said Skinner. “But now…it's attracting people. It's attractive again, and it feels like the market is on.”Kicto Roundtable also reprised its video with Danielle DiMartino Booth. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield briefly surged above 1.6% on Thursday.Until the Federal Reserve declares an intervention to bring down the long-end of the curve, equities markets could see continued "nervousness" said Danielle DiMartino Booth, CEO of Quill Intelligence.

Such a great chat this week with Dr. Stephanie Frischie from the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation ! Stephanie is an agronomist and native plant specialist and so generously and clearly talks us through types of pollinators we didn't know about and how to enhance habitat on our farms. The great book by Xerces that Clara refers to early on in the conversation is: Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. 2014. Farming with Native Beneficial Insects. Ecological Pest Control Solutions. Storey Publishing. 257 pp. The resources Stephanie mentions in this episode are as follows (thanks so much for these great links Stephanie!) Bumble Bee Watch – Community Science project to observe bumble bees and bumble bee nests and upload photos for ID verification and to add to our understanding of where these insects are, when they are there and what habitat resources they are using. Bee City Canada - Bee City Canada's mission is to inspire cities, towns, First Nations, schools, businesses and other organizations to take action to protect pollinators. We offer programs that recognize communities and organizations that are taking steps or are committed to future initiatives to help pollinators. A school or a First Nation that is engaged in such activities can apply to be designated as a Bee School or Bee City. These programs are free. Skinner Native Seeds (John Skinner) in Robin MB has been our primary native seed partner with the Cheerios habitat work and offers a pollinator seed mix for the Canadian Prairies.
