Bass-baritone Chadley Ballantyne is Assistant Professor of Music, Voice at Stetson University. Dr Ballantyne is a frequent guest speaker on the topic of applying vocal acoustic pedagogy for both classical and CCM techniques. He joins Alexa this week on Singing Teachers Talk to discuss acoustics, formants, and resonances. Think of this episode as your guide to getting to grips with vocal acoustics.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Within voice pedagogy, there is no consistency in the use of terms formant and resonance. Chadley explains that the vocal tract is a resonator with multiple resonances. Those resonances create formants in the radiated sound. So the formant is the thing that we hear and affects timbre, and the resonance is the thing in the vocal tract that causes the formant. The F1 and F2 formants are known as the vowel formants, they're impacted quite a lot by the movement of the mouth. We can create favourable matchups for certain vocal techniques by lining up a vowel with a harmonic.  One of the articulation problems Chadley runs into is that a lot of singers don't use their tongue in an open space, but instead crimping that open space to meet the tongue. We want our tongue to be active and precise.  The vowel E needs high frequency energy to stand out in contrast to the low frequency energy in your tone.    BEST MOMENTS ‘If I can move a formant I can do something with it and get better at it' ‘You use language everyday so you use formants all day long' ‘We don't even realise our body is reacting to that oncoming change'  ‘This R that I've been given so much grief about in my classical singing is actually so cool'   EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training    Guest Website https://www.chadleyballantyne.com/ https://www.stetson.edu/other/faculty/chadley-ballantyne.php   Relevant Links & Mentions:  Pan-American Vocology Association Symposium: pavavocology.org NATs (National Association of Teachers of Singing): nats.org  Vocology in Practice: www.vocologyinpractice.org The Evolving Singing Voice: Changes Across the Lifespan by Karen Brunssen Ken Bozeman: www.kenbozeman.com Justin Stoney & New York Vocal Coaching: www.newyorkvocalcoaching.com Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 48 Getting Started as A Teacher, Creating Content & Vocal Versatility with Justin Stoney  Overtone Singing Ian Howell: ianhowellcountertenor.com Voce Vista & Bodo Maas: vocevista.com Practical Vocal Acoustics & Kinesthetic Vocal Pedagogy by Ken Bozeman  The work of Donald Gray Miller  ABOUT THE GUEST  Bass-baritone Chadley Ballantyne is Assistant Professor of Music, Voice at Stetson University. Many of you know Dr. Thomas W. Findley from his many papers, chapters, books, and forewords. But to me, and all of those who knew and loved him, he was Tom Findley. It's with great joy that in this time of sadness that I can present to you this interview which we agreed to release posthumously. Thomas Findley, MD, PhD, is a professor at Rutgers, the state University of New Jersey, in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ. He has been conducting research of some sort from a very early age, and for most of his professional life juggled research, clinical and family life. His career has focused on connecting clinical practice, basic theory, and applied measurements in rehabilitation research, with a heavy dose of mathematical modeling. He did his residency training and PhD in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Minnesota, 1977 – 1983. In 1999, he became an advanced practitioner of Rolfing Structural Integration, and in 2007 he founded the International Fascia Research Congress. Patrick S. McKay, an apostle of the Joint Conference of Restoration Branches, believes that the Latter Day Saint movement is fractured. But one day soon, he hopes, that will change. In his new book, Healing the Breach: Mormonism, Metaphors, and the Pieces of the Puzzle(Lulu Press, 2018), McKay has collected testimonies from various Latter Day Saints to reveal the rich tradition of similarity that exists among them. It is McKay’s intent to reunite the Latter Day Saint churches and to prove once and for all that they have more in common than previously thought. Each branch of the Latter Day Saint movement has a legacy of testimony that has been created, preserved, and transmitted since the movement’s founding, he asserts, and by revealing these testimonies, McKay hopes to promote an ecumenical ministry of healing, one that will unify the Latter Day Saint churches and encourage them to see their shared heritage. McKay’s musings are definitely worth a listen. Daniel P.
