BUFFALO, NY- December 17, 2024 – A new #research paper was #published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 16, Issue 21 on November 29, 2024, entitled, “Thermotherapy has sexually dimorphic responses in APP/PS1 mice.” Researchers Samuel A. McFadden, Mackenzie R. Peck, Lindsey N. Sime, MaKayla F. Cox, Erol D. Ikiz, Caleigh A. Findley, Kathleen Quinn, Yimin Fang, Andrzej Bartke, Erin R. Hascup, and Kevin N. Hascup from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, found that raising body temperature through heat therapy improved memory in male mice with Alzheimer's disease but worsened memory in females. These findings emphasize the importance of personalized treatments based on sex-specific responses to therapy. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder characterized by memory loss and confusion. It is caused by the buildup of harmful proteins like beta-amyloid, which damages brain cells over time. In this study, genetically modified mice predisposed to develop Alzheimer disease (APP/PS1 mice) were kept in warmer environments for six months to explore the effects of heat therapy on memory and metabolism. The results revealed that male mice benefited from the therapy, with improved memory and reduced levels of beta-amyloid in their brains. Female mice, however, experienced a worsening of memory, likely due to increased inflammation triggered by the heat therapy. Inflammation, where the immune system is hyperactivated, can harm brain cells and worsen Alzheimer's disease symptoms. “Thermotherapy improved spatial navigation in male C57BL/6 and APP/PS1 mice, with the later attributed to reduced hippocampal soluble amyloid-β (Aβ)42. Female APP/PS1 mice exhibited worse spatial memory recall after chronic thermotherapy.” Heat therapy is already known to provide general health benefits, such as improving heart health and regulating blood sugar. This study suggests it could also offer a simple, non-drug approach to slowing Alzheimer's progression, particularly for men. Unlike exercise, which offers similar benefits, heat therapy is accessible for people who are weak or unable to engage in physical activity. While these findings are promising, the researchers emphasize the need for more studies to understand why men and women respond so differently to heat therapy. Future research should also investigate whether the results can be replicated in humans and how the therapy can be tailored to individual needs. In conclusion, heat therapy could present a safe and practical option for managing Alzheimer's disease, particularly in men. However, the observed gender differences highlight the importance of further research to refine its therapeutic potential and ensure it benefits everyone. We are kicking off our multi-part foray into the world of Private Credit --- arguably the most talked-about investment vertical of 2024 --- with brilliant and hilarious Keri Findley, founder and CEO of Tacora Capital. If you're interested in learning about Securitized Products, prestigious exit opportunities from the Sales, Trading, & Research division of an Investment Bank, or the career path towards landing a job in Private Credit, this episode is a MUST LISTEN.Keri is our first guest who has a background in Securitized Products, and she has a superpower of being able to explain complex concepts in a simple way. Keri walks us through her early career in ABS CDO research at Morgan Stanley, her quick exit to the buyside --- where she was a Portfolio Manager at Third Point in her mid-20s (!!) --- and the journey of starting her own Private Capital Firm. With Keri, we also explore the themes of how blurred the lines can be between our personal and professional lives on Wall Street. Her candid discussion of what she did to fit in early on in her career, how she handles gossip and negativity, and her decision to have her employees sign prenups on their carry illuminates the complexities of being a senior female investor in today's world. Keri Findley is Chief Executive Officer of Tacora Capital, which focuses on Asset-Based Private Credit Opportunities in Specialty Finance and Insurance. She was previously a partner at Third PointOur conversation starts with her childhood and in particular her high school years, when Keri spent up to 40 hours per week practicing figure skating alongside academic commitments. With a strong aptitude for math but not some of the other subjects she was not an obvious candidate for attending Columbia, but thrived once she arrived there and found herself drawn to finance. While her figure skating was replaced by ski racing, she pivoted to finding a career on the shop floor of an investment house. Having started in a sales role that probably was not the best fit, we hear about her retooling and pivot into more investment centric roles and hear about some of the role models who led and inspired her during this time. She ultimately grew numerous private credit businesses within other hedge funds before developing her own fund, and we discuss this trajectory and some of its ups and downs. Keri is firmly at the coal face in private credit and I ask her about some of the dynamics going on behind the scenes there such as actual defaults and workouts, and we learn a lot that may not make the headlines. Finally we hear about the utmost importance of networking, particularly for women in the profession and we hear about how Keri has personally helped many women to find positions. After high school, Susan Leigh Vaughan marries David Smith. They have two sons, but the children don't keep the marriage together. The Smiths separated several times. During one of these separations, Susan Smith begins dating Tom Findlay, the single son of a wealthy mill owner. Smith is planning a future with her new beau when she gets a Dear John letter from Findley. He explains that he doesn't want an instant family. On the night of October 25, Susan Smith knocks on the door of a house near John D Long Lake. She is hysterical when the man answers the door and tells him to call the police. She says an armed black man just carjacked her at a red light. Her two boys, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex, are still in the car. For days Susan Smith tells an ever-changing story of the carjacking. Then Susan Smith finally admits what she has done. There never was a hijacker. She went out for a drive with her sons buckled into their car seats in the back. Feeling desperate, alone, and suicidal, she drove to John D. Long Lake and puts the car in neutral. She jumps out and watches the car sink. Scuba divers locate the vehicle with the boys in the back, still buckled into their seats. Since Susan Smith was convicted and jailed, tabloid news reports claim Smith told prison investigators that she had four sexual encounters with Lieutenant Houston Cagle, a supervisor at South Carolina's Women's Correctional Institution. Cagle admitted having sex with Smith and another prisoner. He was charged with the offenses in August 2000. The 50-year-old Cagle pleaded guilty and spent 3 months in jail. Captain Alfred Rowe also pleaded guilty to having sex with Smith and was sentenced to five years' probation. Now Smith's relationship with men turns to pen pals. Several men have written to Smith over the years, with Smith looking to a life outside prison. In March of 2022, People magazine gained access to letters Smith wrote to a long-distance boyfriend. In one letter Smith wrote, "I can't wait to build a life with you, leave the past mistakes behind and start fresh, just you and me." The Messenger has reportedly obtained transcripts of dozens of voice and text messages that Susan Smith traded with at least six men while serving her time in Prison. One man has gone so are as to build a fake life for Susan Smith and himself in the game the Sims also has a pet name for the convicted child killer, "Pookie." Colorado judge chided a welding company that tried to pay off a $23,500 settlement with a subcontractor by sending the money in loose coins that weighed 3 tons.Judge Joseph Findley ruled Monday that JMF Enterprises “acted maliciously and in bad faith” by delivering a custom made metal box containing the coins that was too heavy to be carried in the freight elevator at the offices for Fired Up Fabrications' lawyers, let alone with the forklift required to carry it, according to court filings.Findley ordered JMF to pay by a more conventional method like a check. He also said JMF would now have to write a larger one — to pay an extra estimated $8,092 to cover legal fees for the ensuing dispute over whether it had the right to pay in coins.Support the show
