The Orlando Pride made it three wins in three attempts Saturday afternoon on a hot day at Inter&Co Stadium. While the opponents didn't offer up the usual own goal this week, the Pride needed both a Haley McCutcheon goal and a Marta penalty — taken a second time after hitting the post as Kailen Sheridan left her line early — to get the dub against the San Diego Wave this week. While it wasn't a crisp performance, it was another win, and you can't be too unhappy with wins. We break down the talking points from Orlando's win over the Wave, check back on our score predictions, and make our selections for Player of the Match. The international break is now upon us, and a couple of Pride players might face each other in this window when the United States Women's National Team faces Brazil. This week's mailbagbox wants to know about Haley McCutcheon's goal celebration music, players not named Emily Sams suiting up for the USWNT, an interesting hypothetical involving either Kerry Abello or Marta, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. You can use that same hashtag and hit @TheManeLand.bsky.social up on Bluesky. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show. With no Orlando Pride match to preview this week, the show ends after the mailbagbox, but it was a lengthy one, at least (both this episode, all things considered, and the mailbagbox segment itself). We'll be back next week to get you ready for the Pride's trip to the Pacific Northwest to face the Seattle Reign. If you'd like to support our independent writing and podcasting efforts, we'd love to have you as a subscriber or donor over at our Buy Me a Coffee site. Here's how Episode 80 went down:0:15 – The Pride played better against San Diego than they did at Gotham, but it still wasn't as good as Orlando is capable of playing. We'll gladly take the win, though.25:46 – The mailbagbox has plenty of questions this week.

Even before she was making incredible penalty saves in heated rivalry matches, we knew that San Diego Wave's Kailen Sheridan was a baller. One of the top goalkeepers in the NWSL and a reigning gold medalist with the Canadian national team, Sheridan has been on our radar for quite some time. So when she stopped Savannah McCaskill's penalty shot in the 74th minute of the most recent Chanclasico rivalry match against Angel City FC, it wasn't that much of a surprise. (It didn't make it any less impressive, however.) Now in her sixth year in the NWSL, we talk to Sheridan about her gold medal experience at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (02:10), the CanWNT - USWNT rivalry and winning the top goalkeeper award at the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship (16:06), the mental side of goalkeeping (18:56), playing alongside well established stars with the CanWNT (25:18), the Canadian men's national team and the upcoming Qatar World Cup (29:19), the Equal Pay settlement recently signed by the USWNT and the push to do something similar in Canada (35:16), the vibes with San Diego Wave (38:41), her ex-teammate DiDi Haracic's growth from backup to full-blown starter (44:34), the Angel City FC - San Diego Wave rivalry (46:37), and the growth of NWSL and where she'd like to see the league improve next (50:33), before going through Julio's hot seat round. He held off Seattle Mariners rookie Julio Rodríguez in the final 19-18. The 23-year-old Soto hit 53 total homers to win the midseason power showcase, showing off his incredible talent. Soto was locked in at the plate even during a tumultuous recent stretch packed with speculation about his possible departure from the Nats after turning down a huge contract extension. Tonight 2022 MLB All-Star Game, Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, CA American League at National League, 8:00 p.m.         MLB – All-Star Game decided by a HR derby if tied after 9 innings A lot of baseball fans are likely to be rooting for the All-Star Game to be tied after nine innings on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. That’s because of a new rule this year that says if the All-Star Game goes to extra innings, it will instead be decided by a Home Run Derby. The American League and National League will each send up three hitters, and they’ll get three swings apiece to determine the winner. With the All-Star Home Run Derby always popular the night before the game, Major League Baseball decided to make a slugging showcase part of the Midsummer Classic. New York Mets star Pete Alonso has already told NL manager Brian Snitker that hed gladly take part. Mason McGwire, son of 12-time All-Star slugger Mark, was selected in the eighth round of baseball’s amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Mark spent five of his 16 major league seasons with the rival St. Louis Cardinals, including the memorable 1998 season when he and Cubs star Sammy Sosa raced to break Roger Maris’ single-season home run mark. McGwire ended up with 70 and Sosa with 66 before both of their reputations were tarnished amid steroid revelations. MLB – Pitch clocks, shift limits, larger bases in MLB’s future Major League Baseball is considering a pitch clock for next year along with shift limits, larger bases and restrictions on pickoff attempts. A clock experiment in the minor leagues cut the average this year to 2 hours, 37 minutes from 3 hours, 4 minutes at a similar point for non-clock games last year. The average time of nine-inning MLB games increased from 2 hours, 43 minutes in 2003 to 3 hours, 13 minutes in 2020 before dropping to 3 hours, 2 minutes so far this season. An 11-person competition committee with six management representatives, four players and one umpire will make the decisions. Limited use of robot plate umpires is possible as early as 2024. With the greatest closing round by a British Open champion at St. Andrews, he made eight birdies for a 64. He won by one shot over Cameron Young. The big threat was Rory McIlroy. Smith passed him with five straight birdies to start the back nine. The defining moment was the 17th. Smith used that magic touch with his putter to navigate the notorious Road Hole bunker and save par with a clutch putt. McIlroy was disappointed. He also recognized he was simply outplayed by a great player.
