Katherine Priddy grew up in the village of Alvechurch in the West Midlands, writing songs as a teenager which eventually ended up on her beautiful debut album “The Eternal Rocks Beneath”. On a walk in the nearby countryside, she sings two of them before we move on to Tanworth in Arden where Nick Drake is buried. Katherine is part of a stellar line up of artists who've been invited to re-interpret Nick's songs for a new album. By his grave she sings his compositions “They're Leaving Me Behind” and “Cello Song”. It's an emotional tribute from one young artist to another. --- We rely entirely on support from our listeners to keep this show on the road. If you like what we do please either... Here's my review of Eurydice by Katherine Priddy, taken from her 2021 debut album The Eternal Rocks Beneath. This is a lovely folk song about Orpheus's frustrations as he returns from the underworld, and ultimately his sadness when realising that Eurydice can't return to the world. It has some great vocals from Priddy and some wonderful instrumentation as well.Hope you enjoyed this episode, please like and subscribe! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Katherine Priddy's 2021 debut album, The Eternal Rocks Beneath, was a revelation to me when I discovered it a few years back. Folk music it might have been, but it wasn't so inaccessible that it was too much for those who merely enjoy their rock acoustic and restrained. I'm not alone in being a fan of the singer-songwriter from Birmingham. Praise came from Cerys Matthews, Tom Robinson, Radcliffe & Maconie, Janice Long and Guy Garvey, while the great Richard Thompson was so enthused by what he heard, he told MOJO magazine the record was the “best thing he'd heard all year” and took Katherine out on tour with him. And so I thought it might be fun to get Katherine on the blower to tell me about this record, the next record, and a lot more besides. But let me warn you, if you listen to this episode, you will never, ever feel the same way about otters again. We're joined on Sheer Isolation this week by artist, Callan Milward. As well as being a musical artist with Dorset rockers, Weatherstate, he also dabbles in graphic design - especially creating artwork for gig posters. Callan tells us how he went into art design professionally for a whole month, that Weatherstate are now signed and have a new album on the way, and why you can often find him at the UK's third best burger restaurant. Music choices this week are Wiltshire's indie band, Borts, and songwriter Katherine Priddy who is currently on tour in the region. Our news story considers what's next for Swindon's Oasis Centre now the famed glass dome is legally protected. (We recorded as Boris was making announcements, so that's next week's contents sorted already!)
On this episode Simon K speaks to Darragh O'Dea. Irish songwriter Darragh O'Dea from Tuam is known for his wistful storytelling, creating nostalgic nuggets of joy and despair. His music conveys the moods and elements of his surroundings and is delivered in an honest and alluring manner. Released on 29.10.2021 the debut album, “Tilly & The Postmaster", has been described as a love letter to Ireland – all its madness and beauty. Opening with a spoken word prelude from his grandfather and named after his grandparents, the record is full of colourful and engaging indie-folk storytelling. Including singles, 'Split The Difference (La Résistance)' - the story of two childhood friends who struggle to hold onto their friendship as they become adults, due to different political influences on their lives. 'Guerrilla Warfare In Your Back Garden' which features Birmingham singer Katherine Priddy - a song about fighting over land and inheritance, and title track, ‘Tilly And The Postmaster' – a song touching on death during a pandemic and not being able to attend the funeral of your loved ones, written about his grandparents through the eyes of his grandmother. The album tracks have gone on to receive airplay on both BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio Wales and be playlisted on RTE Radio 1. Web: https://ffm.bio/darragh_o_dea Support us!
