I was fortunate to meet Bruce Priddy Spiller at her store, Miss Timmie's, a few weeks ago. On that visit I also met her brother, Sumpter Priddy. Liesa and Russell Priddy's JB Ranch was the winner of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Environmental Stewardship Award for Region 2 in 2023. Most of us don't associate South Florida with cattle and predator conflicts. But the Priddys were the first to document confirmed panther kills of cattle in the region, and the growing panther population just north of the Everglades has caused local ranchers to begin taking stock of how to protect livestock where there are panthers in the pasture. Liesa Priddy grew up in the south part of Immokalee. She owns and operates JB Ranch, a cow-calf operation that focuses on land stewardship and conversation. She has served our state in many capacities including as commissioner of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, on the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District, and the Big Cypress Basin Board to name a few. Katherine is part of a stellar line up of artists who've been invited to re-interpret Nick's songs for a new album. By his grave she sings his compositions “They're Leaving Me Behind” and “Cello Song”. Thompsonian botanical Doctor Priddy Meeks recounts from his journal, how he treated one of the “invaders” for frostbite that had consumed both feet several inches above the ankles.
