Rites of Spring (originally named Rite of Spring) is an annual spring semester music festival held at Rhodes. These days, the events usually happen over two or three days: the first day has games and parties and the second day has the main headlining performer and other opening acts. All kinds of artists have visited our beautiful campus for Rites of Spring, with some key examples being Three Six Mafia, The Black Keys, and Waka Flocka. It all started in the 1970s. Back in the good old days when rotary phones and Third Term were still a thing and when Rhodes was called Southwestern. Music was everywhere with genres like jazz, disco, soul, county and reggae blasting on radios across the country. Lynx to the Past host Kahlila Bandele '27 is joined by Randy Robertson '76 and Neil Mara '77 to record the origin of this beloved campus tradition.

By as early as 1909, composers like Mahler knew that tonality was reaching its breaking point, and composers like Debussy were experimenting with colors and ideas a composer like Brahms wouldn't have dreamed were possible.  Strauss was shocking the world in his own right with his erotic and disturbing opera Salome. Mirroring the roiling tensions all over the world, music was pushing and stretching at its boundaries in ways that it simply hadn't before.  The years from 1900-1914 were a powder keg for the world and also for music, and you could argue that Stravinsky's Rite of Spring was the musical version of the explosion of that powder keg.  And it still has a profound impact on music today.  So as we go through Part II of the Rite of Spring, The Sacrifice - the narrative section of the piece - we'll talk a little bit more about the riot that took place at its premiere, but also the reactions to the piece throughout the 20th century.  We'll also look at the influence the piece had on composers from all across the musical spectrum.  In just 30 minutes Stravinsky changed the world of music forever and it still causes controversy today.  I once was at a performance of the Rite where two elderly patrons of the symphony sat behind me.  As one particularly violent section of the piece blasted away, I heard one of them lean over to the other and say, “If they keep playing this modern music all the time, I'm cancelling my subscription.”  This took place more than a 100 years after the premiere.  How does a piece remain modern for so long?  Are there any other parallels in musical history?  And how does Stravinsky build a narrative that slowly builds in intensity all the way to the sacrifice of the young girl and the beginning of spring? Join us!

The most famous thing about Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring is the riot that took place at its premiere.  Perhaps its overcompensating for classical music's reputation for being a bit stuffy, but musicians and musicologists LOVE talking about the riot at the Rite of Spring, and I'm no exception.  But you might be surprised to know that the Rite Riot was by no means the only disturbance at a classical concert. There are myriad stories of chaos at concerts throughout musical history, but none of them are as famous as what happened on May 29th, 1913. We'll talk about the riot, why it happened, and its aftermath. We'll also discuss this groundbreaking piece, which was revolutionary in almost every way, while being more grounded in the past than you might think. As the great writer Tom Service says, “there's nothing so old as a musical revolution.” Join us this week for part 1, the Adoration of the Earth!

By exploring various messages embedded in Disney's theme parks and animated features, from the Magic Skyway created for the 1964 World's Fair to the 1948 animated film Fantasia, we see Disney's recurring contemplation of evolution. Fantasia, in particular, provides an extended depiction of evolutionary history along with imaginatively rendered reflections on rationalism, materialism, and animism. At first blush Fantasia's “Rite of Spring” seems to promote Darwinian materialism, but as West explains, a closer look reveals considerable nuance and ambiguity. They tend to be rather well-behaved and if anything, they might express their disapproval by simplifying not clapping loudly enough.  However, there was one major exception to this. On a single night in Paris about 110 years ago, a crowd erupted into a riot over the premiere of a ballet.  Learn more about classical music's most notorious evening, the premiere of the Rite of Spring, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. -------------------------------- Associate Producers: Peter Bennett & Thor Thomsen   Become a supporter on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/everythingeverywhere Update your podcast app at newpodcastapps.com Discord Server: https://discord.gg/UkRUJFh Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everythingeverywhere/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/everywheretrip Website: https://everything-everywhere.com/everything-everywhere-daily-podcast/ Learn more about your ad choices. DescriptionIf you are a Rachmaninoff fan, his Symphonic Dances are worth a listen to gain further insight into the many shades of this dynamic composer. Join me, as we take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactThe Symphonic Dances combine energetic rhythmic sections, reminiscent of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, with some of the composer's lushest harmonies. He also may have included material intended for a ballet entitled The Scythians, begun in 1914–15 but abandoned before he left Russia. About StevenSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. He creates a range of works, with an emphasis on the short-form genre—his muse being to offer the listener both the darker and more satiric shades of human existence. DescriptionFlutes come in all shapes and sizes. But each one was created with a specific purpose in mind and marks a period in musical history. In Western music history, certain well-known composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky utilized different flutes in their pieces, thus paving the way for future works. Join me, as we take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactThere are several means by which flautists breathe to blow air through the instrument and produce sound. They include diaphragmatic breathing and circular breathing. Circular breathing is quite difficult and can take performers years to master. It is a technique where players produce a continuous tone without interruption. It is accomplished by breathing in through the nose while simultaneously pushing air out through the mouth using air stored in the cheeks.About StevenSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. While music often unites us, it can just as easily divide us, sometimes rather violently. Several punk shows in the 1970s ended in such a manner and a famous incident at a Rolling Stones concert in 1969 resulted in the stabbing death of an attendee. But perhaps the most famous riot in modern music history took place on the night of May 29th, 1913. The subject of such violence? A ballet. Join me as we take a comprehensive look at one of the most important (albeit controversial) pieces of music of the 20th Century and how it polarized the public. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/historylovescompany/support

The Rite of Spring was the startling result of a collaboration between Stravinsky, Nijinsky (choreography) and Roerich (sets and costumes). In the immediate aftermath, it seemed to be a fiasco because of its riotous reception, but it proved to be the successful introduction of a new modernist aesthetic that cultivated ugliness and machine-like movements. We will trace the musical, visual and choreographical consequences of this new trend through several later Diaghilev ballets: Parade (Satie/Picasso), Chout (Prokofiev/Larionov), Le Pas d'Acier (Prokofiev/Yakulov).A lecture by Marina Frolova-Walker 21 JanuaryThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/rite-of-springGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. As Sir Nicholas Serota delivers his inaugural speech as the new Chair of Arts Council England today, the former director of the Tate art galleries discusses his vision for his new role, and to what extent he intends to change the focus of the London-based institution. Set to the Stravinsky score, Pina Bausch's Rite of Spring tells a brutal story of ancient ritual and sacrificial maidens. Jo Ann Endicott, a dancer who trained with Bausch, has been coaching the English National Ballet in their current performance at Sadler's Wells in London. She joins dancer Madison Keesler to talk about this extraordinary, exhausting, and demanding ballet. Some of punk's greatest hits have been covered by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and English National Opera for a new album - The Anarchy Arias. Former Sex Pistols bassist, Glen Matlock - the man behind the project - explains why he wanted to fuse punk with opera. Plus music critic Kate Mossman reviews.Main Image: Sir Nicholas Serota.
