Every Picture Tells a Story is a great name for Rod Stewart's third solo studio album. The songs consist of solid storytelling, using mixture of original and cover tracks to paint a mosaic of life, love, and loss. This album would mark the transition of Stewart from a solid rock vocalist to an A-list performer. Every Picture Tells a Story hit the top of the album charts in both the US and the UK, and its blend of rock, blues, and folk music would have a staying power over the decades. Supposedly the album was compiled on a shoestring budget, and consists of a number of songs paired with extended jams.Stewart compiled this album during his tenure as front man for the Faces, and all five members of that group appear on the album. Because of contractual obligations at the time, the personnel listing on each track is a bit vague, but it is possible that all five members were on the recording of "(I Know) I'm Losing You." The first single released from the album was "Reason to Believe," which was a cover of Tim Hardin's 1966 song. But the B-side of that album would be the one that would cause Rod Stewart to become a breakthrough success. That song, written by Rod Stewart and Martin Quittenton, was "Maggie May." The album would top the charts, and would be a noticeable success on the year-end charts of the Billboard 200 albums in 1971 (#35) and 1972 (#65), while taking the number 2 spot for the UK album charts in 1971. Not bad for a soccer player who wasn't able to go pro!Rob brings us the bluesy album for this week's podcast. (I Know) I'm Losing YouThis Motown hit originally recorded by The Temptations in 1966 is a lament of a relationship going bad. Stewart's cover went to number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. Motown rock group Rare Earth had a cover of this song a year earlier in 1970. Rod Stewart has several members of the Faces playing on this track. That's Alright/Amazing GraceAnother outstanding cover, this one is of the debut single from Elvis Presley in 1954. However, the original goes back to blues singer Arthur Crudup in 1946. But even that long time period is dwarfed by the pairing of the traditional hymn "Amazing Grace" which dates back to 1772. This deep cut shows some of the diversity of the album. Every Picture Tells a StoryThe lead-off and title track to the album was an original co-written by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. The lyrics are told from the perspective of a musician on tour who finds adventure with women in multiple cities before returning home to think back on his travels. The lyrics are more free-form in this song, not following a consistent pattern of rhymes. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television comedy "Green Acres"This sit-com featuring city dwellers who move to the country went off the air this month in 1971. STAFF PICKS:Don't Pull Your Love by Hamilton, Joe Frank & ReynoldsBruce starts out the staff picks with a song often attributed to Elvis Presley. After performing with the T-Bones and having an instrumental hit with the song "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)" based on a popular jingle from an Alka-Seltzer TV commercial, this group went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Don't Pull Your Love."It's Too Late by Carole KingLynch brings us a song with music by Carole King and lyrics penned by songwriter Toni Stern. This breakup song is considered to be a feminist song by many, given that the woman is breaking up with the man. Stern completed the lyrics in a single day after her breakup with fellow singer songwriter James Taylor. This track would top the Billboard Hot 100, and would win the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1972.Charity Ball by FannyWayne's staff pick is the single release and title track from Fanny's second studio album. Fanny was one of the first all-female rock bands playing their own instruments, and the first to record an entire album. They got their start in Sacramento after sisters June and Jean Millington (guitar and bass) moved there from the Philippines. The group was completed with Nickey Barclay on keyboards and Alice de Buhr on drums. If Not for You by Olivia Newton JohnRob features a cover originally penned by Bob Dylan. Olivia Newton John would make this her first international release and her breakthrough song. Her cover closely follows George Harrison's cover, including prominent use of the slide guitar. Olivia Newton John took this track to number 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and to number 7 on the UK singles chart. (S4 Ep14) The Temptations- With a Lot o' SoulReleased July 17, 1967, Recorded between 1966-1967 (Gordy)With a Lot o' Soul, The Temptations' fifth studio album for Motown, showcased the iconic lineup of David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, and Otis Williams. The album blends Motown's classic pop-soul with experimental arrangements, including lush strings, intricate horn sections, and emotional themes. The Temptations' trademark harmonies shine, with Ruffin dominating many tracks. At the same time, other members take lead on songs like Paul Williams on “No More Water in the Well” and Eddie Kendricks on “You're My Everything.” The album features four hit singles like “(I Know) I'm Losing You” and “All I Need” and solidified the group's place in soul music history. Produced by Norman Whitfield, the album marks the beginning of the Temptations' evolution toward psychedelic soul, setting the stage for future groundbreaking work. Long before folks enjoyed watching oddball viral videos on the Internet, the only way to see these outrageous movies was to share physical video cassette tapes from person to person. One of the stars of this tape sharing phenomenon was musician Jan Terri, whose wonderfully weird music videos got the attention of a lot of people, including celebrities Marilyn Manson and his girlfriend at the time Rose McGowan. Manson even had Jan open for him in concert. After taking some time off for personal reasons, Jan made a spectacular comeback in the early days of YouTube when the video for her song “Losing You” became a hit as the “Worst Music Video Ever.” It still ranks as the top video for the term, with 5.9 million views to date.Today counterculture legend Jan Terri joins us to look at her roller coaster life in music, putting out a children's book and a cookbook for folks living in dorms and life as an accidental internet superstar, long before there was an Internet. Caroline Stafford is this episode's guest. Caroline and David Stafford are authors of the brand-new book Anymore for Anymore: The Ronnie Lane Story. This is the biography of British singer/songwriter Ronnie Lane. In the 60s he co-founded Small Faces, who recorded several hit singles including “Itchycoo Park”, “Lazy Sunday”, “All or Nothing”, and “Tin Soldier”. But before long, singer Steve Marriott left the band to form Humble Pie, and the band would morph into Faces with Rod Stewart on lead vocals. That lineup would record future classics including “Stay With Me”, “I Know I'm Losing You”, and “Ooh La La”. Anymore for Anymore charts the fortunes of Lane throughout that period, his later work with his band Slim Chance, and his unfortunate early death. Caroline is here to share her experience in writing the book and to talk about the career of the late great Ronnie Lane.Purchase a copy of Anymore for Anymore: The Ronnie Lane Story through Omnibus Press HEREWatch Omnibus Press's animated videos for the Anymore for Anymore book HERE Find out more about Caroline and David Stafford from Omnibus Press HEREListen to a playlist of the Ronnie Lane's music HERE Visit the Booked On Rock Website HERE Watch exclusive video segments from the Booked On Rock podcast HERE Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKTWITTERINSTAGRAMTIKTOK Support Your Local Bookstore! Born Christopher John Cheney in 1975, Chris graduated with a VCE from Wheelers Hill Secondary College. Chris played guitar since age 6 and studied jazz at Box Hill Tafe in 1994-95. However, it was at a barbecue Chris' was introduced by his sister to Scott Owen. In 1992 they formed a cover band called 'The Runaway Boys' taken from a Stray Cats song of the same name which performed covers of the band's songs with the odd original song thrown in. In 1994 he got his first album with The Living End who formed with a drummer called Joe Piripitzi who was later kicked out for musical differences. In 1995 the EP 'Hellbound' was released and The Living End was made. In 1996 they released another EP called 'It's For Your Own Good' and had success by sending a T-shirt to Green Day for a gig as their supporting act. In 1997 after Joe was replaced with new drummer Trav Demsey, The Living End cut their first single, entitled "Prisoner Of Society/Second Solution". Two songs from their debut album. This followed up with more success of their self-titled album 'The Living End'. In 2000 this followed with the album 'Roll On'. In 2001 Chris was involved in a severe car accident with his girlfriend Emma who escaped with minor injuries but left Chris in a wheelchair with a broken leg and 3 pins to replace some of the muscle that was damaged. After 2 years of resting and writing songs for the new album they were back in the studio where Trav quit due to a disliking of heavy touring and to spend more time with his family. The Living End were stranded. They spent two days auditioning 40 drummers of which the first was Andy Strachan. Their current drummer. The boys hit the studio and recorded a 14 track album entitled 'Modern ARTillery' which was released in 2003. In 2004 the boys hit the studio once more to record 2 more tracks, "I Can't Give You What I Haven't Got" and "Bringin' It All Back Home". This was a greatest hits album called 'From Here On In: The Singles (1997-2004)'. The same year he formed tribute super group The Wrights with Nic Cester (Jet) - Bernard Fanning (Powderfinger) - Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon) - Kram (Spiderbait) - Davey Lane (You Am I/The Pictures) and Pat Bourke (Dallas Crane). He performed with the band as the lead and rhythm guitarist for parts 1 and 3 respectively and later released Stevie Wrights hit Evie with all three songs of "Evie: (Let You Hair Hang Down)", "Evie: (Evie)" which Chris was not involved with and "Evie: (I'm Losing You)". It wasn't until 2005 the boys hit the studio again to record the fifth album entitled "State Of Emergency" released in 2006. After almost a year and a half of touring Chris left the band and took up yoga and painting while his other band mates hit the surf. It wasn't until late 2007 that they hit the studio again to write and rehearse songs which resulted in the band's sixth studio album 'White Noise' with a single of the same name. Since then the boys have been performing to the general public throughout Australia, Japan, USA and more.
Well, the Wheel keeps spinning and it don't stop spinning. This episode we welcome composer and WoR fan Adam Conrad to the big show. Adam tries to cure Dan of his twin phobias of Improvisation and Music Theory. To Dan's delight, Adam goes into great detail about the left half of Randy's right hand. Then we discuss the Wright Brothers, Charlie's Angels, Mavis Staples, a whole lot of Nilsson, Vince Gill, and Bolero. And we even spend a few minutes on our actual song this week, the bittersweet "Losing You." Also, big announcement in this show. Thanks Adam!

I read excerpts from several books. 00:00 from The Little Prince by Antoine Saint-Exupery 02:37 chapter 57 of Moby Dick by Herman Melville 10:00 from I'm Losing You by Bruce Wagner 14:58 from A Fan's Notes by Frederick Exley
Welcome to the final episode of Wake Island! Bruce Wagner is on the show. BRUCE WAGNER is a novelist and screenwriter known for his apocalyptic yet spiritual view of humanity as seen through the lens of Hollywood. His books include: Force Majeure, Dead Stars, I'm Losing You, Wild Palms (graphic novel), I'll Let You Go, Still Holding, The Chrysanthemum Palace, Memorial, The Empty Chair, I Met Someone, A Guide For Murdered Children (writing as Sarah Sparrow), and ROAR: American Master - The Oral Biography of Roger Orr. Bruce was a co writer on A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987). David Cronenberg adapted his screenplay into the movie Map to the Stars, starring Julianne Moore, John Cusack, and Robert Pattinson. Wagner and Oliver Stone co-executive produced Wild Palms, the mini-series Wagner created, based on a comic strip that he wrote for Details magazine. Wild Palms aired on ABC in 1993. Wagner signed a book deal with Counterpoint Press in 2019 for his novel The Marvel Universe: Origin Stories. When he turned in the manuscript, Wagner said that the editor and publisher told him "the language is problematic." One of their objections was to the word "fat" - a 500-lb. character in the novel playfully calls herself "The Fat Joan" (an homage to the popular social media personality "The Fat Jew") - and stated that "not even a character can call herself that." The writer Sam Wasson wrote about the book's journey in Graydon Carter's digital magazine AirMail ("Bruce Wagner's Woke Universe"), suspecting that Wagner's editor had been cautioned by "sensitivity readers." In the same article, Wasson quotes Wagner as saying, "My entire body of work would be thrown into a furnace if it were to be read and judged by sensitivity readers." On October 13, 2020, Wagner decided that rather than look for another publisher, he would release the novel for free, on brucewagner.la, and into the public domain. BLURBS: “He is a visionary posing as a farceur.” - Salman Rushdie “Wagner is a James Joyce whose Dublin is Hollywood.” David Cronenberg “Bruce Wagner's stories about Hollywood are the best I've read since F. Scott Fitzgerald and Nathanael West.” - Terry Southern “Wagner writes like a wizard. His prose writhes and coruscates.” - John Updike LINKS: You can download a free copy of the Marvel Universe here or buy a physical copy online at Amazon. Children of the New Flesh c/o 11:11. Scott opens the show with his business papers and a tribute to Sunny Day Real Estate. Does the way you start the day say everything about your disposition as a human? We hit the emails early with Danny starting things off. It's peanut-butter jelly time! Mr. Pink talks about how he weaned himself off of mainstream media! We are very proud of him. Rex Chapman tweeted about why the country is in its current state of failure and he represents a lot of people out there. Scott comes out and says it: I'm Broken. Who is more realistic: Will McAvoy of Newsroom or Gordon Gekko from Wall Street? Vin Scully hates socialism, but he's still alive just like Jimmy Carter. Was Carter the most progressive president of the modern era? This country is lost, but are you still proud to be an American? Luke says being the I told you so guy about Joe Biden is no fun. Mike takes the right to have children VERY seriously and he thinks too many people are unable to control their sexual urges in the moment. Money is dirty and Luke has an article about third party lies to share from the New York Times. Scott thinks we're living in a 3x5 card world. Talking points galore with Scott's mom making another appearance on the show. He also theorizes that all politicians are harboring tons of trauma. Mike thinks bureaucrats are the real terror in the United States. We close today's episode with (I Know) I'm Losing You by Rare Earth. If any of this nonsense inspires you for better or for worse, email the show at isitsafepod@gmail.com

Genesis 19-20. Pastor Tim here! One of my dad's favorite sayings was “The grass ain't always greener on the other side of the fence.” “What's that mean?” I asked. “That means don't think you'll be better someplace else.” I came to realize the grass ain't always greener on the other side includes being in a different relationship, going a different school, or working a different job. Although regrettably I always didn't heed the advice, I never forgot it. The expression is also the used in songs. One was the 1986 hit by Earl Thomas Conley, “I Can't Win for Losing You.” It's a love song about a man who was finally free from a relationship. He wanted to be free and found that the grass wasn't greener on the other side. Here's part of the chorus: "And the grass ain't no greener, here on the other side.” Wednesday's text is about a man who could have pen the words to the old Country song. ----- Call us: 208.524.4747 prayer@watersprings.net Online Giving: https://watersprings.net/give.php Serve at Watersprings: https://watersprings.churchcenter.com/people/forms/8221 CCLI Streaming License: 20080252 Size E CCLI Copyright License: 1406906 Size F DISCLAIMER: Closed captioning and/or transcription is being provided solely for the convenience of our viewers. Bruce Wagner, a successful Hollywood screenwriter and the author of twelve novels, has been a beloved literary figure for decades, especially in his home city of Los Angeles. His most recent novel, The Marvel Universe, was enthusiastically acquired by a small press until, he says, the publisher objected to certain "problematic" language, specifically the word "fat," which a character uses to describe herself. This led Bruce to release the book into the public domain by making it available on his website for free. In this conversation, Bruce talks about how a public domain release differs from self-publishing, how sensitivity readers are setting the tone for much of the culture now, and what this means for artists who are drawn to the more monstrous qualities of the human condition. Guest Bio: Bruce Wagner is the author of twelve novels, including Dead Stars, I'm Losing You, and I'll Let You Go. His latest novel, The Marvel Universe, is available for free at brucewagner.la. He is also the creator of the television series Wild Palms.
