Singer, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Emma-Jean Thackray joins Chrystal Genesis to talk about her new album, Weirdo, an ambitious, deeply personal project written, performed, produced, mixed, and arranged entirely by Emma-Jean in her South London flat.  In this episode, they discuss how grief, neurodivergence, and resilience shaped the record, which blends elements of jazz, funk, soul, grunge, and pop. They explore her early path into musicianship, how isolation and creativity came together in the making of Weirdo, and why embracing your weirdness can create a powerful sense of self. The conversation touches on vulnerability, community, and finding your home in music, with tracks from Weirdo, out now via Brownswood Recordings and Parlophone Records, featured throughout. Long before anyone was a Belieber and Justin Bieber became a household name, Shani Gonzales was already a fan. This instinctive foresight and her unwavering self-confidence have been the cornerstones of her illustrious career, culminating in her present positions. Shani holds the dual roles of Executive Vice President and Managing Director at Warner Chappell Music UK and the Head of International A&R at Warner Chappell Music. Her track record in the music business is distinguished by her knack for signing and guiding some of the most influential artists of our time, including DJ Khaled, Juice Wrld, and Bibi Bourelly, who has penned hits for the likes of Camila Cabello, Rihanna, and Selena Gomez. Among the high-caliber talents she has played a part in developing are Labrinth, Justin Bieber, MeLo-X, Nate Cyphert (famous for his work with Florida Georgia Line), Nic Nac (linked with Chris Brown and DJ Khaled), Poo Bear, P2J (producer for superstars like Beyoncé, Doja Cat, WizKid), Saint Jhn, Travis Scott, and WondaGurl, known for her production work with Drake and Rihanna.   In her leadership capacity at Warner Chappell Music UK, and in tandem with her A&R international duties, Gonzales is pivotal in broadening the publisher's UK roster. IT'S THE JAZZ SPECIAL!This week we take some time to explore the incredible rise of UK Jazz over the last few years with celebrated music writer and academic Caspar Melville. UK Jazz has become one of the most vibrant and exciting genres around with new festivals like We Out Here showcasing a myriad of emerging talent, the likes of Emma Jean Thackray, Kokoroko and Ezra Collective all crossing over into the mainstream thanks to undying support from Giles Peterson, 6 Music, Jazz FM and even our own Deb Grant. How then has what was once seen as a niche style become so wildly successful? Following the DIY movements of dance and indie which dominated the last couple of decades the last thing many expected to see was the resurgence of a craft that takes so much skill and dedication? Casper Melville takes the time for an in depth discussion about how we got here and where music might go next. Whether you are a jazz aficionado or a complete novice it's a fascinating story for any music fan. Before all that Eamon gets the best present a boy could wish for and Deb shares some disturbing jams from her childhood. You can buy Caspar Melvilles brilliant book on club culture here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/kindle-dbs/entity/author/B082FJF9HR?_encoding=UTF8&node=266239&offset=0&pageSize=12&searchAlias=stripbooks&sort=author-sidecar-rank&page=1&langFilter=default#formatSelectorHeaderGet in touch and tell us what you think. There's a worldwide revolution happening in modern music. Across the pond, the UK has countless talents blazing new trails and Yussef Dayes is a big part of it. First as the drummer in the duo Yussef Kamal, and now for his stellar adventures solo and collaborative: Alfa Mist, Tom Misch, and the legendary Blue Note Records. Dayes brings a fusion of soul, electronica, and funk that's like an ultra modern cinema for the ears.  Keeping with Blighty, the second half continues with the vibe that jazz has left on the multicultural United Kingdom. It started with a Trad Fad in the ‘50s, eventually taking on the elements of it's African, Asian, Caribbean, and youth communities with fearless results–from Afro-Beat to free jazz to Northern Soul and dancehall culture. We wax on with a list of serious contenders: Dizzy Reece, Emma Jean Thackray, Courtney Pine, the elusive Origin, and IG Culture. Plus, we'd be remiss to forget Cliff Townshend's singing saxophone, aka the forebear of The Who's Pete Townshend. A large chunk of the work that goes into producing The Major Scale is research – lots of it. The majority of our time is spent reading, seeking new channels, and taking leads from faithful hardworking artist management and PR. This episode is a nod to these tireless efforts. The always anticipated Winter Jazz Festival is coming, and while reading about past years' events we came across an op-ed in Jazz Right Now titled "A Feminist Urge Is Driving the Shape of Jazz to Come," written by Hillary Donnell. The piece was so impressive and eye opening, looking at both the social roots of the music and towards the future that lay ahead, that we decided to book her for an interview on it. You might recognize Donnell, music journalist and DJ, from previous episodes of The Major Scale, and hopefully again in future broadcasts. In this episode, we discuss her op-ed in detail. She also picked out all the music to go along with it: from Geri Allen, Emma Jean Thackray, David Murray, Alice Coltrane, Nubya Garcia, Yazz Ahmed, and many more. Donnell knows her stuff, so don't sleep on this one! The Mattson 2 and Emma-Jean Thackray (with Hillary Donnell) Keeping the fresh and bold at the forefront, and our hats off to the legends, The Mattson 2 have been making waves with their dreamy guitar and drum-based music for awhile. Rather than try and describe their sound, just looking at their frequent collaborators speaks volumes; Ray Barbee, Money Mark, Toro Y Moi, and Tommy Guerrero to name a few. With the brothers Mattson's latest take on one of music's most sacred cows, they may have topped themselves (as well as rattled a few cages). That's right, they've gone for John Coltrane and, wait for it... his masterwork A Love Supreme! The Mattson 2 really give it a piece of their creative minds, building a lush adventure and done with loving respect, in a way Coltrane would have given thumbs up to.   One of the most compelling composers working today takes cues not only from the jazz masters, but from the dancefloor and the English tradition of Collier brass bands. That artists name is Emma Jean Thackray. She's one of the shining stars of the jazz-not-jazz renaissance that's currently happening. She'll make you don your thinking cap, get you out of your seat and onto your feet! Major Scale contributor Hillary Donnell returns with a friendly chat she and Thackray had recently.  ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! Music journalist Teju Adeleye and jazz musician Emma-Jean Thackray discuss why young people are responding to jazz now more than ever, if jazz was less accessible in the past and how has the sound evolved. The Marvellous Mechanical Museum, a new exhibition at Compton Verney in Warwickshire, looks back to the historical automata (or animated mechanical objects) museums of the 18th centuries and re-imagines them for the modern day. The exhibition includes 57 works, historical pieces dating back to 1625 and new commissions by contemporary artists, all of which explore the themes of life, creation, imitation, and our fraught relationship with technology. After WOMAD festival organisers complain about foreign artists being deterred by the "humiliating and difficult" process of applying for a British visa, David Jones, director of Serious, a company which produces over 800 events nationwide with over 2,600 artists and a broadcast reach of 44 million, discusses what foreign artists have to do when applying for a British visa, what has changed in the last couple of years and what might be done about it.Presenter : Samira Ahmed Producer : Dymphna FlynnMain image: Dad's Army Christmas Special 1975.
