In this rare and precious conversation, we discuss that moment when you have the worst possible news confirmed; what it is you can actually control, and why that really matters; how to ensure the uncertainty of the future doesn't steal away the joy of the present; and what Kerry learnt about her own tendency to perfectionism.
This week Anna is joined by Kerry Taylor, Education Manager, at The Blue Cross talking about the charity's 125th anniversary. As a milestone highlighting the work the organisation has achieved across two World Wars and recently through the pandemic. Launching the first animal hospital in 1906 the Blue Cross has adapted to provide welfare for all animals as our lives have changed over the years. Offering education over loss, whether pets have passed with old age or been stolen, or if someone has had to give up their pet in rented accommodation, The Blue Cross's bereavement service stands alone. Championing all animals, the charity's initiative in this anniversary year is to focus on education about health and welfare from rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, horses, cats and of course dogs. A Different Tweed: Fashion Conversations with Bronwyn Cosgrave
Kerry Taylor explains how she set up the world's leading auction house specializing in vintage fashion. She reveals how she revived the profession of auctioning one-of-a-kind garments initially for Sotheby's and then how, after striking out on her own, she set auction records and generated headlines by selling couture worn by the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana as well as a slip dress by Charlotte Todd which a 20something Kate Middleton flaunted on a student fashion runway. Discussing a recent project, The L'Wren Scott Collection, Kerry explains how she helped to orchestrate this Christie's London sale of ready-to-wear designed by the late L'Wren Scott. Scott was a model and celebrity stylist who launched an independent fashion label in 2006. She became famous for crafting red carpet finery memorably worn by famous women she styled including Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker.
We talk to Kerry about how MTV re-discovered the role it was born to play in young people's lives and in the process gave her team across 120 markets something to rally around

Growing up alongside a pet can be a wonderful experience for a child, so it is essential to think about the needs of everyone in the home and ensure the relationship works for both people and pets. Many parents look for advice on how to get these relationships right, so in this episode of The Petcast, Emma is joined by Kerry Taylor from the Blue Cross Educational Team, to discuss the many different species that may be a wonderful addition to a family home – and how everyone can work together to ensure that their chosen pets have a happy, healthy life. From tips on how to get your children thinking responsibly about pet care, to the common mistakes to avoid when introducing a pet to young children, Kerry and Emma have a candid conversation around the key things to consider when welcoming a new pet into your family and home. On top of these tips and tricks, Kerry also speaks about how some social media platforms and trends might be more harm than fun when it comes to filming our pets: “You have to think, is this fun? When you look at some of these videos of the trend of scaring your pet and seeing their reaction, or getting in their face and seeing how they react … we are putting pets into a situation that makes them feel uncomfortable, scared and they can't tell us. In some of these videos, you can see their body language – dogs with wide eyes and their ears are back showing they are worried.“What worries me is people watching these videos in society, especially young children… and thinking that it is okay to put animals in that situation. I understand that people think it is a little bit of fun, but when you look at it, it's not nice to put our pets in that situation.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

When the stock market crashed in 1929, ushering in the Great Depression, South Carolina was already in dire financial straits. Cotton prices had plummeted, even before the boll weevil had decimated the crop. Years of non-sustainable practices in cotton farming had ruined thousands of acres of farmland. And, the textile industry had crashed. Then came Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal programs, which altered the physical, social, and economic landscape of South Carolina. In the second of our programs on South Carolina Between the World Wars , Dr. Kerry Taylor, a specialist in twentieth-century US, labor, African American, and oral history at The Citadel, talks with Walter Edgar about the long-lasting impacts of the New Deal on the state. - Originally broadcast 01/10/20 - All Stations: Fri, Aug 14, 2020, 12 pm | News Stations: Sun, Aug 16, 4 pm
I originally invited Kerry, today’s guest, because she’s one of the world’s top financial bloggers. Truly. Her blog is one of the most visited websites in the world. But in setting up the call, I discovered that she had another story she could tell in the context of We Will Get Through This. It’s the experience of surviving one of the most virulent forms of breast cancer. Kerry’s an absolute pro at talking to the media ... but not about cancer. So this is a rare and precious conversation. In it we discuss that moment when you have the worst possible news confirmed; what it is you can actually control, and why that really matters; how to ensure the uncertainty of the future doesn’t steal away the joy of the present; and what Kerry learnt about her own tendency to perfectionism. Vera Worth was a good looking shop girl from Bristol, who followed fashion with a passion. In the 1930s, after marrying John, she scrimped and saved to buy a glamorous gown fit for a film star, and wore it to an important company dinner dance. The knockout dress and its jacket were designed by flamboyant designer to the stars, Elsa Schiaparelli. Photographs of Vera in the dress (available on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook @behindthemuseum) show her looking fabulous, beaming; onlookers are smiling with pleasure and in amazement. After passing her precious garment to her granddaughter, Amanda, who showed it a good time, the ensemble was put up for auction. Vera's Schiaparelli sold at Kerry Taylor’s auction house at the end of 2018. It was bought by the philanthropist Krystyna Campbell-Pretty for the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne where it is now on show, delighting audiences for decades to come. Tiffany goes behind the scenes to discover the story of Vera Worth, and her Schiaparelli dress and jacket; the backstory of a museum object on a pedestal. In our latest bankruptcy study, we discovered that over the last 5 years women have been filing for bankruptcy in higher numbers. In 2012, 42% of women filed insolvency and by 2017 that number reached 48%. But, it's not that women are suddenly using more debt. What we've noted from our client data is that female debtors face a unique set of challenges that drive women to turn to debt to makes end meet and then prevent them from being able to keep up with their debt repayment. For example, two thirds of women are either single or divorced and struggle to manage expenses on a single income. Moreover, women earn 9% less than male debtors and are also 3 times more likely to be a single parent than a male debtor. This is what our average female client looks like. But, why is it that women are increasingly finding themselves in trouble with debt? What can they do to better tackle debt problems in addition to other life challenges? Sharing their expertise today are guests Gail Vaz-Oxlade, Kerry K. Taylor, and our Trustee in the Oshawa office, Alison Petrie, with co-host Sharon Hoyes. Gail Vaz-Oxlade agrees with our findings that women's life circumstances are completely different from that of men's. That's why she suggests women need a different approach to money: We need to be far more vigilant about what we're doing because we're going to have to live on whatever we save for a lot longer time. So, how can women protect themselves in life emergencies? According to our experts, preparation for sudden life changes is key. Gail believes women need to change their mindset of being caretakers of everyone else and not themselves. She suggests that although there may be love and trust in a marriage, there's no downside to having "his and her" accounts: If you end up getting divorced, if your husband ends up getting smashed to pieces on the highway, you will be so glad you have money in your own name. I don’t understand why that is a problem. And if you're a stay-at-home mom, Gail says you should pay all the bills and whatever money is leftover should be split 50/50 between husband and wife. Kerry Taylor seconds this and believes women should try and "disaster-proof" their lives: Just because I know bad stuff happens to good people all the time and you need to account for the future as well as the present. All that and more on today's podcast

I chat with popular personal finance personality Kerry Taylor from Squawkfox about how she got into the personal finance sphere and why she's a big advocate of the second-hand economy. Long description: Kerry Taylor's blog Squawkfox was one of the first personal finance blogs I stumbled upon when I was starting my personal finance journey in my early 20s. And now, so many years later I got the chance to chat with her on the podcast all about her own journey from computer science student, to living in rural British Columbia, to moving back to her hometown of Toronto, to now being a constant voice in The Globe & Mail and CBC. One of the big reasons I really wanted to have Kerry on the show was because she has an awesome sense of style, but she doesn't break the bank to stay fashionable. She's a huge advocate of the second-hand economy, and it all started with trying to save money when buying clothes for her daughter. When she discovered that there were a number of consignment shops and Facebook groups dedicated to buying and selling quality second-hand goods, she got hooked. And pretty much convinced me (and you once you listen) to start taking advantage of the second-hand economy too! Thanks so much Kerry for chatting with me and sharing your insight and story with me! My guest today is Kerry Taylor. Her website, Squawkfox, was voted Canada’s best money blog by the Globe & Mail in 2010, and in 2014 Chatelaine said she was the "gold standard for personal finance blogging”. I’ve followed Kerry’s work for many years, so I was very interested to read her Globe & Mail article where she described her visit to Mogo Lounge, operated by Mogo, a new “sexy, fintech” lender. What Kelly discovered was today's new form of payday and alternative lender. No more ugly yellow stores, these new loan shops have a much more attractive approach. Nice looking locations that look more like lounges than payday loan outlets, they offer free water, an online app - and best of all a 3 minute signup process. In addition, they give you a free credit report, with your credit score. As we discuss on the show, Mogo markets themselves to people who feel like they are “getting screwed by the banks” (and those are the words on the packages of free condoms they hand out). Their marketing pitch is simple: go to the app, get your credit score for free, and in three minutes you may get pre-approved for a loan of up to $35,000 with rates starting at 5.9%. But are the rates really that good? What’s the catch? And what do condoms have to do with it. That’s what we discuss on today’s show.
The creation of the commercial production division of the BBC, BBC Studios, will lead to 100 per cent competition between in house and independent producers; BBC producers will be free to pitch to other broadcasters, and external producers can compete for more content on the BBC. Mark Linsey has recently been appointed as Director of BBC Studios. He talks to Steve Hewlett about how the new model will benefit the market, when tendering out will begin, and why he thinks it will mean better value for money for licence fee payers. More than a year after Jeremy Clarkson left Top Gear, the BBC's long-running motoring show is back. The first episode of the new series aired on Sunday and garnered 4.4 million viewers. Critics noted that this was below the audience achieved by the 2015 series but Chris Evans and the BBC were quick to point out that in terms of share, the re-launch surpassed the first episode of the previous series. Joining Steve to give their verdict on the post-Clarkson incarnation of Top Gear is Mark Wells, former Controller of Entertainment at ITV, and Quentin Letts, critic and sketch writer of The Daily Mail. Reality TV success Geordie Shore is celebrating its 5th birthday. With 12 seasons under its belt, it now has more than a million viewers and 16 million followers across social media, making it one of MTV's most successful programmes. Following a group of friends living together in Newcastle, it's known for showing drunken antics, rows and sex scenes, leading to controversy - it's been labelled by some as bordering on pornographic. Steve Hewlett talks to Kerry Taylor, Viacom's Senior Vice President of youth and music and an executive producer of Geordie Shore, about why the programme works so well on MTV. Producer: Katy Takatsuki.

Pauline’s quoteEvery academic discipline has its technical nomenclature, and modern psychology has a word that is used, probably, more than any other. It is the word maladjusted. This word is the ringing cry of modern child psychology. Certainly all of us want to live a well-adjusted life in order to avoid the neurotic personality. But I say to you, there are certain things within our social order to which I am proud to be maladjusted and to which I call upon all men of good will to be maladjusted.--Excerpt from Martin Luther King on June 6, 1961 at Lincoln University.
