While Cullen was getting things ready this week for Wizard World Portland, John and Jerry decided to talk Star Trek. Sure, we could have discussed it ourselves and put out a decent podcast, but what if we talk to some guys who know Star Trek? Like really know the shows and the characters and the merchandising inside and out? So sit back and enjoy our conversation with Kansas City-based authors Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore. Dayton and Kevin have partnered on multiple Star Trek novels over the years, as well as their projects. Whether it's the original series, Next Generation, the Kelvin universe, or Discovery, these two authors have a lot of insight into what keeps Star Trek relevant after more than 50 years in the pop culture world. This just so happens to coincide with the launch of Picard on CBS All Access. With a lot of familiar faces to reconnect with, people are preparing their Earl Grey tea and are commanding their computers to Make It So as they watch the all-new adventures of Jean-Luc Picard. To get a full list of everything Dayton and Kevin have worked on together, check out DaytonWard.com | Stuff I've Written. In addition to the Star Trek discussion, we have our weekly Pick 3 selections, sponsored by our good friends at Clint's Comics. All three guys voted to "Make Mine Marvel" for books coming out on January 29. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Star Trek: The Motion Picture's 40th Anniversary.    After its cancellation in 1969, Star Trek fans didn't have many options for new adventures of Captain Kirk and the Enterprise aside from a few comics and novels, and a short lived Saturday morning animated series. Even with very limited new material, television reruns fanned the flames of fandom. Star Trek conventions began to pop up, and one burning question that every fan asked was whether or not their show would return to television. Attributed by many to the success of Star Wars, Paramount shelved the plans of a new series in favor of a big screen voyage. Over the years, the first movie of the franchise has been very divisive among fans. While there are many people who pan the film, there are just as many loyal lovers who continue to champion the originality of the movie. Now, with the 40th anniversary upon us, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is having a renaissance with many people giving it a new look with a fresh perspective. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Neil Shurley to discuss the score to the first Star Trek film. In addition to the main bookend hosts, we have 14 additional guests comment on the music and the film itself. We discuss our impressions on the film and how our opinions have changed, our thoughts on Goldsmith, and the place of The Motion Picture in the current Star Trek landscape. Season Four Retrospective Part 7.   An overarching theme for season four of Star Trek: Enterprise was the planting of the seeds of the Federation. The 22nd century showed us a quadrant of space in turmoil with alien races at each others throats, and a separatist movement within humans that believe they should keep all alien cultures from blending with human culture. This group, know as Terra Prime, also believed that Starfleet was responsible for the Xindi attack and should stop all space exploration. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Patrick Devlin and Brandon-Shea Mutala are joined by Star Trek author Kevin Dilmore to finish their season four retrospective. We take a look at the final five episodes of the season: "In a Mirror Darkly" part 1 and 2, "Demons," "Terra Prime," and "These Are The Voyages..." Literary Treks: A Star Trek Books and Comics Podcast

A Time to Sow. Morale aboard the Enterprise has been dealt a serious blow. The incident at the Rashanar battle site has left a definite stain on the career of Jean-Luc Picard, and he and his crew can't help but feel that their latest assignment is designed to get them off the radar for the time being. However, their mission to investigate a centuries-old distress call may be more intriguing than Starfleet intended. When a new civilization is found to be thriving against all odds, Picard and his crew must get to the bottom of a mystery that threatens to tear that civilization apart. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Bruce Gibson and Dan Gunther discuss A Time to Sow, the third book in the nine-part A Time To series, and the first book in a duology by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore. We talk about a surprise visit to the time period of Star Trek: Enterprise, Starfleet "milk runs," Data's emotions (or lack thereof), an act of sabotage, the Dokallan civilization, an outside threat, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings. In the news section, we discuss the upcoming Star Trek vs. Transformers comic miniseries coming soon from IDW, The Art of John Eaves by Joe Nazzaro coming later this year, and I Am Captain Kirk, a new Little Golden Book for the tiny Trekkies out there! Adron talks with New York Times Bestselling author Dayton Ward. A prolific writer with dozens of books, novellas and short stories spanning a twenty-year career, Dayton is probably best known as one of the core writers of the Star Trek novels. Along with his frequent co-author Kevin Dilmore, Dayton writes within the canon continuities of the original Star Trek series, Next Generation, and more. He has also developed new crews and characters to boldly explore the well established Star Trek universe with fresh perspectives. We talk about how Dayton kickstarted his writing career by entering a publisher’s contest back in the ‘90s. We explore the pros and cons of writing licensed work, while having to please the fanbase and the protectors of the intellectual property. Dayton explains how he works with a co-author while balancing numerous projects, and we talk about Twitter and the social media styles of professional creators.

(RIGHT CLICK THE IMAGE TO SAVE THIS EPISODE TO YOUR COMPUTER) The second season of Batman 66 kicks off with a new villain.  The Archer, a self-styled Robin Hood thief is robbing from the rich of Gotham City and distributing to the poor.  Although the citizens are returning the money, they can't help but cheer for his exploits and it's affecting Batman's public image.  Can he stop this malevolent marksman before it's too late? Joining John to discuss this debut episode of the second season is author Kevin Dilmore.  In addition to discussing the episode, as a representative of Hallmark, Kevin discusses the release of Batman related merchandise including this year's Christmas ornament. Literary Treks: A Star Trek Books and Comics Podcast

Star Trek Reference Books. When faced with an overwhelming number of Star Trek stories, sometimes we need to step back and look at the nuts and bolts of the universe. What we need is a reference book. Fortunately, many studious and brave men and women have toiled over the years to provide us with just that—resources that offer details of the Star Trek world that are far too vast for our limited human brains to store. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Matthew Rushing and Christopher Jones are joined by Trek.fm feature writer Phillip Gilfus to explore some of our favourite reference books and to dream about those we hope to one day find on our shelves. Did we include your go-to sources of Trek goodness? In our news segment we learn that Rob Caswell's once-imaginary Trek series "Seekers" will become books for real, thank to the Vanguard team of David Mack, Dayton Ward, and Kevin Dilmore, and we glimpse the newly revealed cover of A Very Klingon Khristmas to find out just what happens to naughty little Klingon children.
