Show notes provided by Jack Adrien For more than thirty-five years, author Michael Jan Friedman has built a successful career as a writer of more than 80 fiction and non-fiction franchise novelizations and expanded universe stories including Star Trek, Star Wars, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Predator, andAliens, some of which have appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list. Moreover, Friedman has written more than 150 comic books, mostly for DC Comics, but also for Image Comics and Marvel Comics, respectively. In 2019, Friedman created the genre-busting Empty Space graphic novel with Brazilian artist Caio Cacau. This bold epic is an exciting blend of the action, detective, horror, science-fiction, thriller, and western genres. Empty Space introduced Robinson Dark, an amnesiac hero finding his way through Friedman's expansive world building. Now five years later, Friedman returns to his space adventure universe with Empty Space: Betrayal, a soon to be released full-length prose sequel funded through Kickstarter, taking us deeper into the mystery of Robinson Dark's past and the world in which he tries to fit in. Join the Mint Condition crew as we welcome Friedman back as one of our fan favorite guests. We discuss the inspiration for Robinson Dark as the protagonist, how Friedman conceived of the Empty Space universe, and how he considers his Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign as not only a platform to connect directly with his fans, but also an opportunity to offer valuable rewards for their support. Take a look behind the scenes at what will make Empty Space: Betrayal a worthy successor to its prequel and what continues to inspire the man who created it. It's time for the ultimate 1990s crossover - X-Men and Star Trek, united at last! We discuss our experience reading 1998's Planet X by Michael Jan Friedman, as per the request of our Patron Fred. For once, we actually want more romance between two characters and just want there to be some stakes in a story, but I guess that's hard when you're working with popular intellectual property. Paris & Chris swap personalities, we remember Orbitz, and Paris Does Math About It™. We hope you enjoy the episode, Fred, and thank you so much for supporting the show! Remember that if you, too, would like to have us read and review a book of your choice on the show, you can gain that power by joining our Patreon at the appropriate tier.
Show notes provided by Joe Peluso Webster defines selfish, "as devoted to or caring for oneself". But when you are a New York Times Bestselling Author, you might be inclined to redefine selfish as "fun". And that's exactly what Michael Jan Friedman has done with his most recent Kickstarter launch--Self*Ish. It's the card game that brings out the best of our worst side. Join your hosts James, Chris, and Joe as they sit down for another visit with Mike, and get a master class on how to create a fun, innovative card game with just enough snark to put a devious smile on your face. Mike takes us through the process from its inception to completion. Along the way he and, our resident card "shark" Chris, delve into the finer points of conceiving, playing, and marketing these time-honored games. If you prefer a card game with tricks, actions, and an engrossing narrative than Self*Ish belongs on your shelf. And as you may recall from previous episodes that featured Mike, he is a prolific wordsmith who is always delivering for his fans. So stick around for the end of this episode and get a preview of Phenomenons Volume 3, and the further adventures of Robinson Dark. You will not be disappointed.
Mike is back to talk about his new card game, and it's an excuse to get into more Star Trek . Mike has written many Trek Novels, Comics abd ab episode of ST Voyager

Show Notes Provided by Joe Peluso Once again the familiar hum of The USS Enterprise's transporter fills the confines of Mintcondition, and in a twinkling, a treasured guest has arrived. Join your hosts James, Chris, and Joe as they welcome back New York Times Best-Selling author Michael Jan Friedman. We are not sure where Michael just beamed in from, but we suspect it's a sector of The Alpha Quadrant where creativity reigns supreme. Mike's got a lot of things in the hopper! Foremost, is a new Kickstarter launch for "Phenomenons: The Wind and Fire". Michael whets our appetite with a sneak peek into the continuing adventures of his original groundbreaking superhero universe. Will there be more twists and turns in this third volume? Does The Enterprise "go where no one has gone before?" Back the new Kickstarter and make your own "discovery'. Naturally, a conversation with Michael covers a number of pop culture topics: missing members of Starfleet, KIrk's lost loves, the future of Robinson Dark (the protagonist of Mike's "Empty Space" graphic novel), and the intrusion of AI in the creative writing process. Resist the urge to beam back with Mike to his special section of the galaxy, and enjoy this entire episode. So sit back, engage only the maneuvering thrusters, and savor an hour of pleasant and insightful conversation.

Ray Schwetz gets business empowerment from Michael Jan Friedman, an author of more than 60 books. He has also written for TV, comics, and radio. He is a local Long Islander who makes time to give back to the community.
Show notes provided by Joe Peluso If "one is the loneliest number" (apologies to Three Dog Night), then two has to be better. Right? Sure it is. The number two is the smallest, and only, even prime number, but more importantly, it's a symbol of teamwork, service, love, and friendship. Now after two years, and more than 150 episodes of The Secret Origins of Mintcondition wending its way through digital media, the 2nd anniversary episode has arrived! The welcoming, warm, fun spirit of Mincondition Comics lives on for all to enjoy! Join your hosts, James, Chris, and Joe as they recollect a year's worth of pop culture professional appearances (Michael Jan Friedman, Jeremy Adams, Keith Williams, Dan Madsen, and Larry Kenney), and recurring, treasured friends (Richie. Arco, Jack, Keith, Adrienne, and Josh) popping up to share their nerdiness. Personal highlights for the past year are shared (including the special episode with Tom Payne), and thanks to the Mint Community are joyfully acknowledged. Back of the Store Chats, Comics' Corners, Sports Shorts, rants (someone please remind Joe to take his medication) raves and more are the stuff that made for a successful and fun-filled 2nd year. And as with every reminiscence, some new information is always unearthed. Learn why "the chipper" haunts Chris, and why Joe will never let go of his obsession with The Brooklyn Nets. See what you started, James? Two years in the books, folks! It's been a blast! And we could not have done it without you--our loyal friends and followers. And so from Three Dog Night to Frank Sinatra--The Best is Yet to Come!!
Learn more about the team of indie authors at Crazy 8 Press and how Michael Jan Friedman keeps things in line as writer and editor of multiple anthologies and his own work on this episode of And I Quote. We will also be taking your questions! Michael Jan Friedman is the author of nearly 70 books of fiction and non-fiction, about half of them set somewhere in the wilds of the Star Trek universe. In 1992 Friedman wrote Reunion, the first Star Trek: The Next Generation hardcover, which introduced the crew of the Stargazer, Captain Jean-Luc Picard's first command. Over the years, the popularity of Reunion has spawned a number of Stargazer stories in both prose and comic book formats, including a six-novel original series. Friedman has also written for the Aliens, Predator, Wolf Man, Lois and Clark, DC Super Hero, Marvel Super Hero, and Wishbone licensed book universes. Eleven of his book titles, including the autobiography Hollywood Hulk Hogan and Ghost Hunting (written with SciFi's Ghost Hunters), have appeared on the prestigious New York Times primary bestseller list, and his novel adaptation of the Batman & Robin movie was for a time the #1 bestselling book in Poland (really). Friedman has worked at one time or another in network and cable television, radio, business magazines, and the comic book industry, in the process producing scripts for nearly 180 comic stories. Among his comic book credits is the Darkstars series from DC Comics, which he created with artist Larry Stroman, and the Outlaws limited series, which he created with artist Luke McDonnell. He also co-wrote the story for the acclaimed second-season Star Trek: Voyager episode “Resistance,” which guest-starred Joel Grey. In this first half of the discussion, the conversation includes butt tattoos, underwear preferences, Joe Hill, nepotism, how horror works in books vs film, jazz trombone, William T Riker, Fourth Chair Carryover Questions, the difference between the book and movie versions of Prisoner of Azkaban, The New Classic Film Jerks, the Off Panel comic book interview podcast, the Purple Stuff podcast, letting your kids introduce you to new music, celebrity podcasts, Action Comics, Dawn of DC, Star Trek: Double Double by Michael Jan Friedman, Cassandra Cain as Batgirl, and X-Men comics.
Show Notes Provided by Joe Peluso Securely moored to its berth in the spanking new Space Dock is the USS Mint Condition. Seated in the spacious observation lounge are your hosts, James, Josh, and Joe. And joining them once again for good conversation (and maybe a nip or two of Saurian Brandy) is returning guest, New York Times Best Selling Author--Michael Jan Friedman. The guys settle in for a thorough examination of Star Trek: Picard Season Three. Great character moments, Changelings, The Borg, The Enterprise G (!), and Star Fleet Admirals (consistently fubaring command) are some of the topics discussed. Surprising turns in the Picard narrative and other avenues not taken also enter into the dialogue. The writing process is also examined with insightful advice proffered by Michael to avoid the dreaded "writer's block". And as the hour grows late and the wait staff in the observation lounge prepares for a shift change, Michael treats us to a preview of his upcoming ventures. Crazy 8 Press is still humming along, Phenomenons Three is on the horizon, a prose novel continuing the adventures of Robinson Dark will have Empty Space salivating, and the kicker?--a Kickstarter campaign for a non-collectible card game! Now all that's left is for the boys to do is find their way to the nearest Transporter Station so they can all get back to work. Waiter #1 "What do you suppose this green paper the one called Joe left behind is?" Waiter #2 "Who knows! And who still carries around paper?"
Retired Norse God Vidar fights many big, strong men and many hairy giants in onesies. Willow and Gene stare at the cover of the book, confused. Warriors from across the Nine Realms converge to decide if this book is worth reading.
Episode 513- Join Uncle Jim and his Treksperts as we talk with author MICHAEL JAN FRIEDMAN. He currently has a Kickstarter campaign for Thelas And Other Stories that runs through Feb. 6th. "A collection of brand-new science fiction, fantasy, and super hero tales. Stories that have never been published before. Stories that leave you guessing till the last page. Like "Trash Talker," a police procedural with a profoundly demented difference. Or "Goney," the kind of super hero tale you'll see nowhere else. Or this book's "City Of A Thousand Gods" installment, which is about as much fun as you can have on the printed page." He has written over 38 Star Trek novles, and several Star Trek Comics, and that's just scratching the surface! Call (646)668-2433 to talk with Michael Jan Friedman. Let's see what's out there...ENGAGE!
Beaming down from the bridge of the USS Stargazer, New York Times bestselling author Michael Jan Friedman once again visits that "strange new world" known as The Mint podcast. This "away mission" is filled with more morsels of info than the average replicator could produce in an episode of Next Gen. Join your hosts James and Joe, as they give Michael the center seat for an hour of lively conversation that spans a quadrant of topics ranging from Michael's latest Kickstarter (Thelas and Other Stories), an update on Crazy 8 Press, his affinity for mythology, and Jean-Luc Picard's frequent comic book coiffures. It's time well spent with a master wordsmith who spins a verbal tale as well as a written one. But before you click play, be sure to have both pen and pad nearby. If you are like James and Joe, you are going to be doing some serious shopping for new reading material.

Brunch on Eggs Benedict with Michael Jan Friedman as we discuss the comic book he refused to trade for Fantastic Four #1 as a kid, how the X-Men might actually be a deconstructed Superman, whether it mattered the Marvel Universe was set in New York rather than DC's series of fictional cities, why his two favorite superheroes are Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter, the lesson he took from an early encounter with Issac Asimov, how he easily solved a stardate conflict which allowed him to keep Chekov in one of his Star Trek novels, what it was like helping Hulk Hogan write his autobiography, and much more.
In this episode of the podcast, we welcome a special guest, friend of the show, and longtime customer of Mint Condition: Rich Kranjac. We talk all about what got him into comics, monsters, and music, what some of his favorite comic covers and artists are, how he found the store, why he started collecting CCG comics, what he is collecting now, and much more. (Phew! We covered so much ground!) 00:00 James introduces the show with lots of fanfare for our guest Rich Kranjac. We kick off by talking about how the different ages of comics match the different ages of Mint Condition, as well as the different types of comic book stores that weren't like Mint, when and why Rich stopped collecting current books, and what he is collecting now. 8:26 We ask Rich what his secret origin is with collecting comics and things in pop culture. He shares how his uncle introduced him to Godzilla, monsters, music, and comics and reveals that the first comic book he remembers is Swamp Thing #11. 13:45 Chris asks Rich if he misses the comic collecting experience. Rich reminisces about going to Mint and he talks about what he is doing now. He shares how his co-workers are into comics, some Avengers and X-men recommendations, and we land on a Hoopla sponsor/ non sponsor plug. 21:44 We talk about digital comics, reminisce more about good times at Mint, and then start delving into Rich's knowledge of comics. 27:31 James asks Rich to name his favorite comic book covers and artists, which in turn opens a discussion about Rich as a writer and composer of music, the Mego Lizard figure, the art of John Romita Sr., talk about the Green Goblin, and the classic Amazing Spider-Man covers 39 & 40. 38:45 Rich talks about how he found Mint Condition. This opens up a conversation about Rich's wider history of collecting comics and how Joan Gross taught Rich about grading comic books. Rich talks about the different things CCG looked for when grading books; Joe talks about how Rich taught him how to grade books. 50:00 Rich talks about buying comics from Michael Jan Friedman and what we learned from Looney Tunes. 57:09 James asks Rich why he switched over to getting graded comics. After answering, Rich talks about buying Spider-Man #1, how Rich's father was also a fan of comics and then Rich shares some thoughts on the MCU, which leads to us wrapping up the podcast by reminiscing (even more!) about Mint.
Mike is editing a new Superhero Anthology and we talk about his work in the Star Trek Universe on TV Comics and Novels, plus we discuss Nu Trek TV shows.

Michael Jan Friedman is one of the most successful sci-fi and fantasy writers on the planet—although in Mike's case we should probably specify the planet. Most of Mike's early work centered in and around the Star Trek universe, as the writer of novelizations based on the show and its many spin-offs. He's the author of the first “Star Trek: The Next Generation” hardcover, Reunion, which became a New York Times best-seller; and, co-writer of the acclaimed second-season “Star Trek: Voyager” episode, “Resistance.” He's also written tie-in books for several other DC Comics and Marvel franchises, including the Aliens, Predator, and X-Men series, as well as more than 150 comics, most of them for DC, where he created the popular Darkstar comic book series. In all, Mike's written or co-written more than 70 books, including 11 New York Times best-sellers. Somewhere along the way, to fill the spaces between comics and novelizations, he tried his hand at ghostwriting, most notably with the New York Times best-selling Hollywood Hulk Hogan, written with the famed wrestler, and Ghost Hunting, written with Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson of the Syfy channel's “Ghost Hunters” series. He also became a New York City public school teacher, finding time to write in the evenings and on weekends—ticking yet another box on the checklist of a writing life. Together with a group of seven fellow science fiction writers, he founded Crazy 8 Press, where he continues to publish his original fiction. And so our journeys have brought you, poor listener, to discussion of the Shatnerverse. First, Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens were the ghostwriters/collaborators/spinning-crap-into-clay-ers of the Shatnerverse. Michael Jan Friedman is one person who also wrote Star Trek books, but didn't write these ASCII-compatible abortions so they're in the clear. I apologize for besmirching your good name, sir. While we're talking about Star Trek novel writers; Diane Duane is fantastic and Peter David is pretty cool. Duane wrote “Spock's World,” and “Rihannsu,” which got frequently ripped off in TNG. David wrote “New Frontier,” which used a lot of characters, from the show, including Commander Shel– We'll get to it. Also Victor Milan wrote for both Star Trek and Battletech, so there's a factoid for your next nerd party.

We are back to break down Hollywood Hulk Hogan's first autobiography "Hollywood Hulk Hogan" (with Michael Jan Friedman.) This is Hogan's "worked" memoir as he would release another later on that told the "real story." That one was mostly bullshit too! Feel free to submit fake quotes I can fool Hulkamatt with next time. Full credit to the 372 Pages podcast for that idea. Also I might be wrong about doubting the Hogan/Matsuda broken leg story. But a sculptor named Vidar still remembers that horrific time. He is an immortal, a bastard son of Odin, and one of the few Aesir to survive the Twilight. Weary of the war-living ways of his kind, he has forsaken Asgard for Earth, traveling from land to land and guarding the horn of death that once protected the gates of his home. Now, after centuries in this world, Vidar hears the anguished cry of a kinsman. Asgard has been rebuilt, but a terrifying new enemy wearing Odin's war-mask has stolen Thor's hammer—and is planning a holocaust to consume not only the gods' home but Earth as well. Vidar knows he has no choice but to return to Asgard—and take the horn of Hell with him.
