On today's all new edition of the cast, we take a gander at the CMJ Top 250 Alternative Songs list from 1979-1988, and use that list to imagine what the Billboard Modern Rock Chart would look had it started way earlier back in the 1980's. We plug the gap with songs from the early 80's that defined the era such as Duran Duran's "Hungry Like The Wolf", Talking Heads "Burning Down The House", The Clash's "Rock The Casbah", The Smith's "How Soon Is Now" and so many others to create what is in my opinion the ultimate dream 80's alt-rock playlist. We talk about how these songs defined the era in which we grew up in, and also laid the seeds for what would become alternative music and further solidified and cemented what it meant to be an alt rock artist back in its early embryonic era, and how alternative music sets itself apart from rock music as a whole. I also play you a local tune from Worcester's own J. Geils Band and their mega hit "Centerfold".

Peter Wolf is a man with a million stories to tell. Thankfully he put many of them in his memoir, Waiting on the Moon: Artists, Poets, Drifters, Grifters, and Goddesses, released in March 2025 on Little, Brown and Company. In the hard-to-put-downWaiting on the Moon, Wolf is tells of his relationships and exploits with the likes of Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, the Rolling Stones, Sly Stone and Merle Haggard. Wolf is best known as the frontman for the J. Geils Band. Their 1980 album Love Stinks reached No. 18 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and the title track went to No. 38 on the Hot 100. The big breakthrough came in 1981 with the album Freeze-Frame, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The title track hit No. 4 on the Hot 100, and the single “Centerfold” spent six weeks atop the Hot 100 in 1982.  Wolf left the Geils band in 1983 over creative differences. The band released one more album in 1984, and Wolf released his first solo album, Lights Out, in 1984, which rose to No. 24 on the Billboard 200. That album featured such guests as Mick Jagger, Elliot Easton of the Cars, G.E. More known as a party band than they were rock royalty, the J. Geils Band is still a rock band of the era that gets tossed aside, despite a decade of incendiary live shows and more hits than some may recall. One of my favorites. Played them loud.  Learned some history too. I seriously rocked the “Blow Your Face Out” live cassette in my $2,000 brown Buick Skylark back in 1986. It's really not just that the J. Geils Band is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But they probably aren't getting in. Yet the bridge they made - from the last 60s blues band era to the time of Seger, Springsteen, Petty, and U2 blowing up - was integral in rock and roll. Their live show.  The R&B fused with rock and roll. The way they hit the stage, took no prisoners, and then blew out of town. That matters.  That's their legacy. That was their time. It was a band more than the perceived one-time splash of "Centerfold" and "Freeze Frame".  The J. Geils Band were road dogs.  They were also a bunch of guys who reintroduced a whole lot of people to songs that were forgotten before they recaptured them.  And they had hits well before they were able to fuse the new wave with the old rock, and did it more seamlessly than lots of others who tried. Teri Copley is an American actress and model. She is known for her role on the American NBC/syndicated television series We Got It Made, which premiered in 1983, co-starred on the 1985 CBS television series I Had Three Wives, and appeared as a panelist in the 1989 pilot for Match Game 90. She posed nude and was the covergirl for Playboy for the November 1990 issue. Teri appeared in the 1984 television film I Married a Centerfold and the 1992 film Brain Donors. In the 1990s Copley became a born-again Christian and eased her way out of Hollywood. Teri dated actors such as John Stamos and Tony Danza before escaping Hollywood. She is now a foster parent living in Florida. In 2003, Teri released a book about her faith, entitled Conversations Between a Girl and Her God.In 2018, Copley appeared on the Dr. Phil television series seeking help for her adult daughter Ashley, whose boyfriend Hector was accused by Copley of being physically abusive. Teri has recently gotten back in to acting in various movies and hosts a very popular YouTube show.
