I can't believe this is episode 50 already. Time goes very quickly. As many of you know, I have been working on my book about Neomodernism. In this episode of the Neutral Ground Podcast, I read a conference paper that I recently presented at the 2022 Psychology and the Arts conference. The paper is titled: "Breaking through the Neomodern Despair: How the Marvel Cinematic Universe Produced a Moment of Awe." It practically falls off the tongue, doesn't it? The paper has three goals: 1) I touch upon Keltner and Haidt's research on awe; 2) I define Neomodern despair through warnings that were given about the loss of narrative knowledge by Jean-Francois Lytard and Agnes Heller; 3) and finally, I dissect the scene from Avengers: Endgame where Captain America (Steve Rogers) is shown finally wielding Mjolnir (Thor's hammer). Part 2 Acomi rants to Turk182 about the Marvel Comics movie memes depicting Iron Man (Tony Stark) and Captain America (Steve Rogers) as a couple, with Spider-Man (Peter Parker) as their adopted son. With no real reason, or implication, "people" online have mashed these three Marvel characters together in a sort of My Two Dads meets Family Circus. What infuriates Acomi even more is how these memes and poorly created stories strip the away the true nature of the characters to fit there unwarranted fantasy. Tony, is the stern but loving father that no longer dislikes being touched or handed things, or has a desire to protect the world; just his little spider-baby. Steve, is the hunky, doting, matron that thinks Tony should go easy on the boy. Gone is the stalwart sentinel of liberty and symbol of all things righteous. And, Peter, isn't the boy genius who fights to do what's right and believes that "with great power comes great responsibility. Now, he's a whiny, little, brat that can't take care of himself and needs "daddy Tony" to wipe his nose and his butt. With no real reason, or implication, "people" online have mashed these three Marvel characters together in a sort of My Two Dads meets Family Circus. What infuriates Acomi even more is how these memes and poorly created stories strip the away the true nature of the characters to fit there unwarranted fantasy. Tony, is the stern but loving father that no longer dislikes being touched or handed things, or has a desire to protect the world; just his little spider-baby. Steve, is the hunky, doting, matron that thinks Tony should go easy on the boy. Gone is the stalwart sentinel of liberty and symbol of all things righteous. And, Peter, isn't the boy genius who fights to do what's right and believes that "with great power comes great responsibility. Now, he's a whiny, little, brat that can't take care of himself and needs "daddy Tony" to wipe his nose and his butt.
