With his dynamic, powerful voice, it is through God's grace that gospel sensation Kevin Vasser is on a path to immeasurable greatness. Vasser's robust, energetic, incomparable sound, combined with his willingness to share his testimony to help others, makes him one of the most uplifting and talented artists the gospel industry has experienced in a while. As the son of a preacher and with influences such as Sam Cooke, Joe Ligon, and Marvin Winans, singing has always been part of the equation for Vasser. He joined the church choir at age five and then formed the group Youth Edition with his older brother and two cousins while only in middle school. With his father as their manager, the group sang around Chicago for years, entering competitions and talent shows. Later, they released two projects, the second under their new name Kinzmen. While connected to the group, Kinzmen, Vasser continues to answer the call. After releasing two solo projects, he returns with his 3rd project, “I Believe.” This project is not just new music but introduces a new group and movement - Kevin Vasser and BLVRS (Believers). This lively group of singers is centered and focused on helping others in their area of believing and giving others the push needed to keep believing. While preparing for this latest project, God instructed Vasser to ask those attending to do one thing: BELIEVE. Vasser's belief and obedience to God opened the door to receiving a kidney transplant. Thirteen years ago, Vasser was diagnosed with kidney failure and underwent kidney dialysis three times a week. Finally, the day before his live recording, he received a call that a match had been found. The next night, he completed the recording and received a miracle! Vasser's relationship with God strengthens each day, even in the face of adversity. He has loving support, encouragement, and praise from his wife, Erica, and their two children, Khyra and Kevin Jr. He includes his family in every facet of his ministry. The extra time spent with them helps him to grow more spiritually. With everything God has blessed Vasser to do musically, he still stands firm in his original call to preach, teach and share the good news of Jesus Christ. Preaching his first sermon at 12, Vasser is an ordained elder today. When he is not preaching, recording, or performing, Vasser leads the Worship & Arts Ministry at the legendary Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, shepherded by Pastor Reginald Wayne Sharpe Jr. and served under Pastor Emeritus Charles Jenkins. For the past 21 years, this church has become such an essential staple in his life. In addition, Vasser has been featured in multiple musical recordings with Fellowship Chicago Choir and has received numerous Stellar Awards. Because he is a hard-working, professional, undeniably gifted artist, and a faithful believer in God's glory, whatever it is Vasser chooses to do, he will do so with grace, dignity, and passion. “I am a person of strong faith. It is important to stay true to who you are and hear the voice and follow the direction of God. I want to be what God wants me to be,” he says. “I don't want to please man. I want to make sure I please God. And as long as I am connected to Him and in a place where I can hear Him speaking and follow His leadership, I think I'll be in good standing.”

We are headed north to Lake Orion, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. On August 6, 1994, a man was discovered on his apartment floor. His body is surrounded by blood. The man had fought furiously to escape his killer, as demonstrated by all the injuries on his face and body. His apartment showed no signs of a break-in, but it did look like someone had gone through the apartment. The man was Kevin Boyd, and his body was discovered by his son, Kevin, Jr. What the 16-year-old would encounter would be the absolute worst scenario. Kevin Sr. is positioned on his stomach on the floor with a pillow over the back of his head. The blood spatter on the wall let him know it was no accident. Kevin Jr. ran from the apartment, desperate to get some help. This week's podcast guest is Nancy Fletcher who retires at the end of this year after a 40-year out of home advertising career, which includes nearly 30 years as President and CEO of OAAA.  Here are highlights of our interview. What have been the industry's biggest accomplishments over your tenure? Over these last almost 30 years the industry has reinvented itself.  Today it's data rich, it's measured, it has an exciting variety of out of home formats that are digital or static, and in that time out of home revenues have tripled while other traditional media is declining. The industry over the last three decades has done an effective job of turning what were government and community skeptics into actual partners of the industry.  We won that important fight for just compensation on Capitol Hill. All 46 states that have billboards now have just compensation. We beat back a statewide referendum ban in Missouri that would have spread to other states. We achieved a green light for digital billboards and rolled out a regulatory framework that is working at the federal level. We won a court challenge when Scenic America was not happy with that regulatory framework and tried to stop digital billboards via litigation. On the importance of the Thomas case This is a big case before the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.  It's called the Thomas case.  It asks whether billboard law is constitutional. The case comes out of Tennessee, and it's important because it may actually make its way to the US Supreme Court. The industry stake in this case is nothing less than the protection of property rights that are included in the current law. We expect a ruling from the US 6th Circuit Court of Appeals later this year. Where is OOH doing a good job giving women opportunities? We've made good progress, but we need to do more.  If you look at it just from a metrics perspective, the OOH industry has done as good a job or better than much of the advertising or corporate world in giving women opportunities.  I remember when I entered the industry in 1978, there were four women in senior positions.  And now there are hundreds.  You had a piece in Billboard Insider on almost 400 women in senior positions, and 58 were running specific operations.  You also published a story on how the public out of home companies are doing better than the Fortune 500 for the number of women directors.   Where can the industry do better? Diversity and inclusivity will be a central theme at the Las Vegas Conference.  We've partnered with the Female Quotient, which is a female owned enterprise committed to advancing equality in the workplace.  They are going to add important programming elements including a Female Quotient lounge that will be a side stage with panel discussions, career counseling, etc.  The CEO of the Female Quotient, Shelly Zallis, is going to be on the main stage talking to CMO's from two or three Fortune 500 companies, discussing the importance of diversity in today's ad business. Who have been some of your mentors? I have been blessed by working with Bob Naegele. He taught me the power of out of home and the power of urgency. Arte Moreno brought deep discipline and a service orientation to the business. Karl Eller, and his focus on the creative impact of the medium.  Bill Apfelbaum, who is one of the best salesmen ever in any business.  He lived the principle, and I learned from him that nothing happens until a sale is made. All of the Reilly's are super savvy business people.  I've worked closely with Kevin Sr and Kevin Jr and now Sean Reilly. And then maybe most important of all, the many family owned company leaders who are really like family to me.  People like Tom Norton, who has been on the OAAA board since the day I arrived. What's next? I want to take the next months to thank the industry…. This industry has given me such unforgettable opportunities.  I've had a great ride.

Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe of The Harold & Maudecast review and recap The Leftovers, Season 3, Episode 3, "Crazy Whitefella Thinkin". When last we saw Kevin Garvey Sr (Scott Glenn) he was high on "devils tongue" down under in Australia. Of course, this was as visioned by Kevin Jr while dead watching his father appear on a TV screen in his hotel room. Apparently that vision was correct cause look Australia, Kevin Sr is there to kick some ass and piss people off. Thanks to an old cassette recorder and tape of Kevin Sr and Kevin Jr circa 1981, we discover that Kevin Sr has the power to stop the rain. Nutty? It is The Leftovers. True or not Kevin Sr, convinced he can stop a flood that he believes will hit on the 7 year anniversary of The Departing, sets out across the outback in search of every Aboriginal song to sing before the anniversary. Scott Glenn's performance in Episode 3 is one of the finest ever on television. Please award Gods, give him everything. If we didn't respect the show so much we would tell ya to watch this episode even if you're not caught up just to see Scott Glenn's acting chops. But, you gotta catch up. And it's worth it, and only 3 seasons. Also noteworthy, Lindsay Duncan (Birdman, Under the Tuscan Sun), whose mysterious character Grace was introduced in Episode 2. gives a stunning also award worthy performance. In true Leftovers fashion loose ends explained and tied up to move us closer and closer to the finally. 9/10 For more reviews of The Leftovers, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead and other TV, movie reviews, game reviews and more visit www.thehmcnetwork.com.
