Intermodal demand will likely remain volatile from the start-and-stop trade policy coming out of Washington. International demand may get a boost following the US and China lowering their tariffs on one another as part of the announced 90-day truce. Shippers may start to rush to fill warehouses at lower duties. This will help mitigate the drag on domestic intermodal demand created by lower diesel prices. In this Talking Transports podcast, Anne Reinke, president and CEO of the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), joins Lee Klaskow, Bloomberg Intelligence senior transportation and logistics analyst, to share her insights about the state of the industry against this uncertain backdrop. Reinke also discusses legislative priorities, combating fraud, market-share opportunities and how her career in transports was sparked by boredom.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Andrew welcomes Matt O'Mara, CEO and founder of Whimsy Intermodal and Whimsy Trucking. Matt's journey into the transportation industry began in 1994 when he worked as an owner-operator for a trucking company. When that company was acquired and its drivers let go, Matt seized the opportunity to start Whimsy Intermodal in 1996 and hired many of those drivers. Today, Whimsy has about 50 company drivers, 145 owner-operators, and 150 trucks. Andrew and Matt also cover:Whimsy's organic business growth and unique capability in handling challenging freight, the importance of finding consistency, and Whimsy's focus on execution, including how they add value beyond transportation. The significant challenges Matt ran into of implementing new TMS systems in a legacy company, the importance of team buy-in, and the eventual success of digitizing and going paperless, including leveraging AI for order entry and real-time driver coaching.Treating drivers with respect and providing robust support as the key to retention, highlighting the reason why Whimsy has a waiting list for owner-operators.The importance of transparency, leading by example and avoiding hypocrisy, and the critical role of communication, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness in leadership.Current market conditions, the lack of impact from Chinese New Year, potential tariff effects, and the critical need for robust infrastructure and processes.Follow The Freight Pod and host Andrew Silver on LinkedIn.*** This episode is brought to you by Rapido Solutions Group. Key Takeaways: Tech-Driven Drayage: A PortPro Perspective Corey Abbott and Joe Lynch discuss tech-driven drayage: a PortPro perspective. Corey is the Chief Growth Officer and his team lead enterprise initiatives at PortPro, an innovative technology company that keeps the drayage industry moving efficiently with its operating platform built for drayage trucking companies, brokerages, and those that do both. Drayage carriers and brokers face the following challenges: Operational Inefficiencies & Lack of Real-Time Visibility: Difficulty managing complex drayage processes and tracking critical information (containers, status, appointments) leads to wasted time, errors, and increased costs. Manual Processes & Poor Communication Hindering Productivity: Reliance on outdated methods for order entry, scheduling, invoicing, and communication creates administrative burdens, slows down operations, and limits collaboration. Stuck with Outdated Tech or Ill-Suited Systems: Drayage carriers and brokers often face a dilemma: either wrestle with legacy TMS platforms that hinder integration and lack modern AI, or try to force-fit traditional TMS solutions missing crucial drayage-specific features like appointment management. Missing the Mark on Drayage Needs: Existing TMS options frequently fail to address the unique complexities of drayage, lacking the specialized fields and functionalities required for efficient appointment scheduling, container tracking, and overall drayage operation PortPro customers enjoy the following advantages: DrayOS: A Purpose-Built Operating System for Drayage: PortPro's flagship product, DrayOS, is a cloud-based TMS (Transportation Management System) built specifically for drayage operations. It streamlines everything from dispatching and invoicing to document management and container tracking, offering users a centralized platform that eliminates manual workflows and siloed systems. Automated Workflows and Real-Time Visibility: With features like EDI/API integrations, automated billing, and GPS-based container tracking, PortPro empowers carriers and brokerages with real-time operational visibility and faster decision-making. This reduces delays, improves on-time performance, and boosts overall efficiency — critical in an industry where time is money. Compliance and Scalability at the Core: PortPro's technology is designed to adapt to regulatory complexities like AB5 and environmental compliance laws. It helps companies stay ahead of legal changes while scaling their operations without needing to invest heavily in back-office expansion. This makes it especially valuable for mid-sized drayage companies aiming to grow. Specialized AI Agents & Optimizers: PortPro launches AI-powered tools integrated directly into their TMS, offering targeted automation for specific drayage workflows like spreadsheet updates and empty container returns, accessible via an AI Marketplace and customizable chat interface. Key AI Features for Efficiency: The initial rollout includes "AI Chat" for real-time data queries, "Spreadsheet AI Agents" for automatic data synchronization with Excel and Google Sheets, and "Empty Return Agents" to automate the often cumbersome process of managing empty container returns. Addressing Drayage's Manual Inefficiencies: These AI innovations directly tackle the significant administrative burdens in drayage, which can account for up to 20% of operating costs, freeing up operations teams to focus on more strategic and customer-centric activities. [04.53] The biggest conversations on the show floor at Manifest. “Agentic AI is the new buzzword – it's the new blockchain! There's a lot of hype, but there's also a lot of hope.” [06.29] The biggest problems in the intermodal industry right now. “Visibility is still key, because there's so much complexity when all of this data comes together. We're not certain who's right and who's wrong, there's no system of record as this cargo moves inland and then back through the flow.” “A lot of the technology projects we've seen have been focused on an insular basis, intra-company process improvement versus: how do we make this entire supply chain more efficient and effective for the shippers and carriers that move it?… We're trying to take costs out of our own internal operations, but we're not looking at the big picture on what makes everything more seamless.” [10.24] What Lynxis is building to help solve the industry's biggest challenges. “We're a custodian of technology for our customers... And we add the infrastructure to support it.” [11.59] AI and how it's being talked about, and utilized, across the industry. “Everybody wants to use the AI buzzword, when what they're using isn't actually AI.” [16.11] Why process automation, not robotic automation, needs to be top of the priority list for landside logistics facilities. “Most container operations we see really can leverage more of the process automation.” [18.28] The importance of data and analytics in driving operational performance and competitive advantage. “You either have to invest in-house, or have a good partner to help you mine the data that's critical to your business operation. The thing that differentiates you, and enables your core competencies, is a firm grasp on data.” [22.25] Why AI isn't an easy fix for scheduling, and why organizations need to pay more attention to improved orchestration. “It's nothing that AI needs to solve, or even can solve right now, because there's not even the connectivity between all the players.” “When you say automation and scheduling, we hear ‘orchestration.'” [24.46] How improved planning and orchestration can help shippers eliminate excess inventory and reduce costs. [26.17] From talent shortages to managing infrastructure, the biggest obstacles standing in the way of improved intermodal efficiency. [32.02] The importance of case studies and why Allen wants to talk about proven results, not just hype.

The latest episode of FTR's Rail and Intermodal Update, hosted by Joseph Towers, recaps insights from the Rail Equipment Finance Conference and discusses ongoing uncertainties in the industry. A key takeaway from the event was the widespread hesitancy among industry players—shippers, OEMs, lessors, and component providers—due to shifting tariff policies. Recent tariff developments include the implementation of 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods and an additional 10% on Chinese imports, followed by a carve-out for automotive imports from Canada and Mexico and a temporary pause on Mexican and Canadian tariffs under USMCA. Additionally, an unexpected announcement of reciprocal tariffs starting April 2nd adds further uncertainty. Beyond trade policy, rail traffic showed a rebound after weather-related disruptions, with total volumes up 4.8% y/y. Carloads increased by 2.6%, with notable growth in grain (+5.8%), coal (+4.9%), and motor vehicles (+4.5%), though forest products (-2.9%) and nonmetallic minerals (-0.4%) declined. Intermodal traffic grew 6.8% y/y, reversing a three-week decline, though Canadian intermodal volumes remained negative (-6.0%).The Rail Market Update is hosted by FTR's Senior Analyst, Rail, Joseph Tower.  As this information is presented, you are welcome to follow along and look at the graphs and indicators yourself by downloading the PDF of the presentation.Download the PDF: https://www.ftrintel.com/rail-podcastSupport the show
