In this first live episode of the Sumud Podcast, we welcome back renowned law professor, civil rights advocate, and author Khaled Beydoun. Khaled shares his reflections on Gaza's genocide, the use of law and writing as tools of resistance, and the evolution of global consciousness in the digital age. Drawing from his personal experiences growing up during Lebanon's civil war and his legal expertise, he discusses the intersection of Islamophobia, colonialism, and Palestine advocacy today. This video is for educational purposes only. It provides historical and political analysis to inform and educate viewers. We also dive into his two impactful books:
We were honored to welcome Khaled Beydoun to the studio during his time in Melbourne to share his amazing story for our audience. Khaled spoke on his upbringing, experiencing war in Lebanon, facing adversity growing up and finding role models in the books he was reading, looking up to great men like Muhammad Ali & Malcolm X. Khaled's unwavering sense of justice was truly inspiring to us, and we hope his amazing messages reach your heart, as they did ours. A huge thanks to Khaled Beydoun for such an amazing discussion. Meet the American law professor who's visa was in question earlier this week after speaking at a Mosque in Sydney. Khaled Beydoun, who is of Lebanese, Egyptian and Palestinian heritage, has a staggering 2.5 million Instagram followers and has become a major source of trusted news on war on Gaza and the broader regional conflict. In this exclusive interview, Khaled sits down to share his insights on the past year of violence, the powerful voices of Palestinian journalists on the ground, and the risks that come with challenging confronting western media narratives. In chat with Antoinette Lattouf, Khaled delves into the significant impact that Muslim and Arab voters in the U.S. could have on the upcoming election. FULL QUOTE FROM HIS TALK ON OCTOBER 7 "It's a good day and we've got to mark some of the good news that comes about, that we oftentimes neglect," “Today is not fully a day of mourning, today is also a day that marks considerable celebration, considerable progress and in some respects, considerable privilege. The level of global literacy around what's taking place in [Palestine] has exponentially risen." Part 1:We talk with Mark Joseph Stern, reporter for Slate.com about the case at the US Supreme Court about the FDA's approval of mifepristone. The standing of the plaintiffs is also in question. This is part of the Heritage Foundation's push of Project 2025. Court has not yet ruled, and the result will affect the FDA's power to declare the safety/non-safety of drugs and medical devices in the US.Part 2#RaceClass Ep. 27 | Rightwing Jewish Organizations Fuel the New Anti-Semitism One increasingly encounters the descriptive claim that anti-Semitism is on the rise and the causal claim that progressive politics are to blame. For anyone familiar with Christopher Rufo's unapologetic smear campaigns against CRT and DEI, there is a reflex to dismiss both claims as manufactured propaganda. That reflex makes sense, but invites two risks: one analytical, one political. The analytical risk entails discounting or disregarding actual evidence of anti-Semitism. The political risk entails alienating allies who hold legitimate concerns about anti-Semitism past and present. To guard against these risks, we take seriously both claims. We then discuss our provisional conclusions. First, it is likely that students whose dress signals Jewish identity (e.g., wearing a Kippah or Star of David) are increasingly likely to encounter hostility or negative attitudes from others. Second, rightwing Jewish organizations are responsible, in large part, for this hostility. Here's why: Through their rhetoric and behavior, including the rigid claim that anti-Zionism is per se anti-Semitism, these organizations have hardened the conceptual link between Jewish identity and Israel's current assault on Palestinian life. As a result, symbols of Jewishness are now publicly read as symbols of anti-Palestinian animus. To better understand how rightwing rhetoric fuels this new anti-Semitism (which renders vulnerable Jewish students who are orthodox and anti-Zionist), we turn to Khaled Beydoun's scholarship on islamophobia. We're talking Palestinians, Israel and Gaza on this episode of Daily Border Crossings (DBC) and an expert on the region, author and law professor Khaled Beydoun is here to help us break things down and understand what's really going on. Israel, Gaza, Hamas, IDF, genocide, cease fire, occupation...the places, the people, the events, the terminology– If you're like many Americans, myself included, you've seen the horrific videos and images and heard heart- and gut-wrenching stories of the very real, very current war in the Middle East. And if you're like me and many Americans, you've wondered just what is going on? Khaled, an activist with a very active social media presence (his Instagram) for bringing awareness who's also very busy traveling, speaking and writing on CNN or in the Washington Post, a frontline humanitarian made time for us to talk on day 69 of the war. Years before writing his 2 books, American Islamophobia: Understanding the Roots and Rise of Fear and the follow up The New Crusades: Islamophobia and the Global War on Muslims, he spent over a decade researching the area. He'll discuss the history, the present and how he thinks this will end. Also, hear his take on famous Palestinian DJ Khaled's silence, his thoughts on Beyoncé, Taylor Swift & celebs in general in relation to the crisis, and what all of us should know, what we should do. Get ready to sit back, listen and learn. It's DBC. If you've listened to the last two episodes with Andre, you know I've been wrestling with what it looks like to respect all people while also acknowledging that power disparities have an impact on how we engage with harm. I say it all the time, but I want safety and security for all people, even if they disagree with my politics. Like most of you, I've had Palestine and Israel on my mind for the last few weeks. Like a lots of you, I grew up with a theology around the state of Israel that made it - not unlike the US - incapable of wrongdoing. While I was processing this, I put up a few threads on twitter but I wanted to have a conversation with someone who actually knows what they're talking about. So I reached out to Khaled Beydoun to chat about history, justice, and colonization. Thankfully he will gracious enough to discuss this with me! I'm grateful to be able to connect with people who see respect for all people as a non-negotiable even as we reckon with the legacy of colonization. I chat with Dr. Khalid Beydoun to discuss his latest book, American Islamophobia. In what turned out to be an almost hour-long conversation, we touch on his definition of Islamophobia, what a post-racial, post-religious Obama world means for American Muslims, Trump and white supremacy, anti-blackness in the American Muslim community, CVE, the fear that some religious leaders have of the left, and much more
In his groundbreaking book, American Islamophobia: Understanding The Rise And Roots of Fear, Legal Scholar/Critical Race Theorist/Author & Activist, Khaled Beydoun states that what is termed Islamophobia today is actually embedded into the of systems and structures of the United States; it is carried out through conduits such as immigration policy, foreign policy, and media. We talk with Khaled about those forces (seen and unseen) that have contributed to, and reinforced anti-Muslim bias and Islamophobia in the U.S. This book is a definite must read! In the second half, Tariq & Ibrahim talk about President Trump's decision to send the National Guard to help guard the border, his comments that women in the 'caravan' of people heading towards the border "are being raped at levels that nobody has seen before"; the neo-conning of the Trump administration in the appointment of John Bolton & Trump's plan to place tariff's on Chinese steel and aluminum. Islamophobia is conventionally regarded as racist and bigoted views about Muslims expressed by ignorant individuals, including the one who somehow became president. But legal and critical race scholar @KhaledBeydoun explains that the reality is more complicated. The War on Terror perpetrated state-backed Islamophobia, which nurtured and bolstered popular anti-Muslim bigotry. Support us at Patreon.com/TheDig.
