Game Crimes Episode 6 - Gold Medal Games: Sonic Mania ft. Sid Menon Description: Part 2 of our 3-part series on video game communities, the criminals are joined by Sid Menon of the We Thought About Games podcast as we examine 2017's retro-platformer throwback Sonic Mania. How did the Sonic fangame community go from a loose collection of gaming nerds to the creative forefront of the franchise? We stretch our legs in this extra-length episode to tell the story of romhackers going legit and how communities can wrestle back history from the forces of corporate-fueled nostalgia. GAME CRIMES is a history project by Mike Bachmann (Greetings Adventures Podcast, Roll for Streetwise) and Jay (now June) Munford (SHU Podcast, Poor Skeleton Games) detailing the black market history of video games. Each podcast covers a single topic, provides some historical context and reviews a few games related to the topic. On the GAME CRIMES interactive streams, Mike and Jay answer questions, give how-to demonstrations and play these games for the first time. We collect virtually for the first time since the pandemic started to record our longest podcast to date, and for good reason: in lieu of E3 happening this year, we instead have to contend with an eternal summer of announcements. And in the final quarter of this episode, we discuss the ongoing allegations of abuse in the industry — content warning for discussions of sexual abuse and sexual assault — along with the failure of the industry to protect victims and oust abusers. Games include Tabletop Simulator, Just One, Wits & Wagers, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, Dépanneur Nocturne, Knuckles’ Chaotix, Spellbreak, Hitman, and Hitman 2. Got a question for the show? This week on SEGA AGES we focus on all the characters in the Sonic universe...well, except from the blue blur himself! Hear tracks from games plus as Knuckles Chaotix and Shadow the Hedgehog, plus the non-Sonic stages from Sonic Adventure and more! Plus, ResidentSD tells you some questionable Sonic trivia....
In the longest edition of SEGA AGES so far, ResidentSD plays tracks from 22 different games initially released in 1995, including Knuckles Chaotix, Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000, Ristar, Sonic Drift 2 and more!
