My guest today is a game director who has pioneered new forms of nonlinear storytelling that blend film and games. After twelve-year stint at the British development studio Climax, where he directed Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, he began work on an independent project, Her Story. In the game, partly inspired by Sharon Stone's audition tapes for the film Basic Instinct, you sift through a trove of police interview footage to uncover a mystery. Her Story's style of disconnected, live action sleuthing has become characteristic of his work, which includes the games Telling Lies and, most recently, the Netflix-published Immortality, described by Prospect Magazine as a“culture-spanning, psycho-visual experiment.” “All my games have been about identity,” he says. “It's scary that the people we've known for decades are unknowable to us.” Welcome, Sam Barlow.[All voiceover performances courtesy of Ed Hawkins: http://edwardhawkinsbass.com] Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. This week we are very excited to chat with video game designer Sam Barlow! He's a writer and game designer who worked on Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories before going the indie route and releasing the award-winning and absolutely stunning games Her Story, Telling Lies and his latest game, the BAFTA Games-winning Immortality. We discuss how he went about creating these nonlinear story-focused mystery games, his love of genre, the research he did into found footage films and academic texts on police work and so much more. We also talk about working with acclaimed screenwriters Allan Scott (Don't Look Now) and Barry Gifford (Lost Highway) on Immortality and how they go about creating those "a ha!" moments in his games. Then we dig into the very weird French Star Wars-esqe animated movie Time Masters, Les Maîtres du temps/The Masters of Time (1982). Faceless angels, existential dread, children in danger, duplicitous princes, giant hornets and psychic aliens...this movie has everything. And Sam's story of existential dread seeing this as a kid was amazing. Immortality is available on Windows, Xbox (and Gamepass), Android, iOS and MacOS. If you have a Netflix subscription, you can also play the game through them. It's highly recommended. You can follow Sam on Twitter.

Welcome to the first episode of KindaNYC's official gaming show, Platform Agnostic! In our debut episode, Mike and Kyle discuss their impressions on Afterparty, The Outer Worlds, and Borderlands 3's Bloody Harvest Event. Matt gives his impressions on The Elder Scrolls Blades, and also takes us back to the PSP days to talk about his spooky season game, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, and what the original Destiny looks like in 2019. EXTRA LIFE: KindaNYC's 24 Hour Extra Life Stream begins on November 9th at 12PM EST! Then on November 15th, Matt will be holding his Extra Life Bachelor Party Stream at 5PM ES! Visit tinyurl.com/kindanyc2019 for everything you need to know, plus how you can donate for the big, beautiful kids. LIMITED EDITION UPDATE: As we discuss at the top of the show, LE in podcast form has turned into Platform Agnostic. Attempting to marathon older games while trying to keep up with new releases started to feel like work. That's not what we intended. The goal of Platform Agnostic is to casually hang out and talk about the games we love, while occasionally previewing upcoming releases that aren't available yet thanks to our friends in the industry. With that being said, LE is not dead! It has transcended into something that fits it's format better. Each month, Matt will be publishing a written piece under the LE umbrella about a game he has revisited. The first piece on Ocarina of Time is available now on kindanyc.com. LE was first and foremost Matt's baby, and we're all incredible excited it gets to live on in the best, more appropriate way possible. With this being our debut episode, and the first LE piece live on the site, all feedback is welcomed! Please leave us a review, or come talk to us either on Twitter (@PlatAgnostic) or on our Discord (invite link below). From 3BF, to LE, and now settling on Platform Agnostic, thank you so much for sticking around through all these changes! Transforming this into a show to compliment Dollar Slice, and moving LE to written form, we believe we finally nailed it. We can't wait to play some games with you all.

Silent Hill is one of our favorite horror series, and it's always pleasant to return to it. This episode has us looking at Shattered Memories, the Wii game developed by Climax and Sam Barlow (of "Her Story" fame). It upends a good number of traditions of the series, and ends up being a very different game than you might expect. The star is the psychological profiling system, but the game earns big consternation for separating puzzles and monsters.

It's easy for games to get lost in the crowded winter season, when huge games like Mass Effect and Call of Duty dominate dominate both sales charts and critical conversation.  This week, we have an in-depth discussion about a game that has been quietly lurking in the shadows: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.  The most title recent in a long-running series, Shattered Memories re-imagines the first Silent Hill to provide both a unique gameplay and storytelling experience.  In addition to upholding the sense of dread and horror from the previous games (seriously, try playing this with the lights off!), the Shattered Memories has some narrative twists that set it apart from most other games.    Jorge and I made sure to keep the first half of our talk spoiler-free before getting down to specific plot points.  Despite (or perhaps because of) its rough edges, we both highly recommend the game.  Just don't blame us when you're huddled beneath the covers at night, afraid to turn the lights off.  Finally, the in-game psychologist told us its healthy to share your feelings with others, so feel free to jump in with your comments.   Some discussion starters:   - For those of you who played the game, what did you think?  Had you played other Silent Hill games before?  How did your puzzles and stories differ from ours? - The game claims "to play you" just as much as you play it.  For those of you who played it, was this accurate?  What other games "play" their players, and how do they do so? - Is there room on the market for "double-A" games like Shattered Memories?  Is this a meaningful distinction?  How should we evaluate games with experimental concepts but less polish than blockbuster titles?   To listen to the podcast:   - Subscribe to the EXP Podcast via iTunes here. Additionally, here is the stand-alone feed. - Listen to the podcast in your browser by left-clicking the title. Or, right-click and select "save as link" to download the show in MP3 format. - Subscribe to this podcast and EXP's written content with the RSS link on the right.   Show notes: - Run time: 44 min 23 sec - Music provided by Brad Sucks

Feedback / Kommentar zur Show
