TCW Podcast Episode 234 - Yu Suzuki Often called SEGA's Shigeru Miyamoto, Yu Suzuki redefined arcade gaming through innovation and ambition. He pioneered immersive cabinets like Hang-On's rideable motorcycle and After Burner's flight sim, and used sprite scaling to simulate 3D in hits like Space Harrier and OutRun. His work culminated in the R360 G-LOC—a gyroscopic cabinet offering full 360° motion. Suzuki later led SEGA into 3D with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter, and pushed console design forward with Shenmue. Though he didn't invent Quick Time Events, he coined the term—and created a living, interactive world filled with dynamic conversations, a fully explorable city, and unprecedented detail for 1999. His vision helped shape what players now expect from immersive game worlds.
Hosted on Acast. We're playing two not very classics of their respective genres today as we go back to the back half of the 90s to play an early action game and a relatively early 3D platformer. We're kind of split on which game we prefer along lines I expect you'd predict, but we both had a pretty good time with both games anyway! Also, before that, Jackson gives the MOTHER of all segment 1 updates. At 16:15 or so until 1:15:30 Jackson's Audacity file broke and we had to use the backup. Em's a little quiet during this section but it's mostly okay. I did my best with the edit. Sorry about that! Thank you so much as always for listening, please rate and review the podcast, and tell all your friends on whatever social media you call home that they should check us out. This week we talk Nintendo Lego, joy cons and shine a spotlight on Space Harrier 2 for Sega Genesis.
We're heading back to the late-80s to look at creation of SEGA's After Burner, originally released in arcades in 1987. As part of its history, we'll also look at the childhood, and early career of its creator, Yu Suzuki. His story is very much the history of motion simulator cabinets in arcades, which has us also looking at games such as Hang-on, Space Harrier, and Out Run. Join us as we fully immersed ourselves in history on today's trip down Memory Card Lane. Find out more at https://a-trip-down-memory-card-lane.pinecast.co

We dissect the gameplay of Out Run, how it has held up for almost forty years, and share our tips for success (or more realistically, how to avoid our mistakes).

Our second episode of Infinite Perfect finds the intersection between the bizarro world of film negatives and the fantasy zone of Space Harrier. It's the same place at the same time, and one cannot exist without the other. Ride the cycloptic mammoth through the checkerboard pastal wastes to figure out how in the hell Eric believes all of this must be true.
Pure insanity this week. We start strong with Lucy’s thoughts on Hidden Through Time 2: Myths & Magic, then slowly descend into madness with discussions on Contra, Space Harrier, Yu Suzuki’s back catalogue and Mario’s surname. All of this is caused by Aadil’s beer, the Umibozu from Tartarus. Lucy’s beer is and isn’t game related have Track’s Sea of Stars, and Ben just sits in Bristol with Party Wave from Bristol Beer Factory. Episode originally recorded on 26/10/23. A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool
From the phoenix-like rise of titans like Nintendo and SEGA to the industry's foray into other media like magazines and television, these formative years laid the groundwork for the gaming universe we inhabit today. Dive into the stories behind legendary titles like The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Final Fantasy, and witness the birth of iconic franchises, innovative game designs, and the blossoming of the gaming community. This episode is a treasure trove for those eager to relive the golden era of gaming or discover the roots of their favorite contemporary titles. From 1986 to 1989, the gaming world underwent a transformative evolution. Beginning with the post-crash rejuvenation in 1986, the industry saw Nintendo and SEGA's intense rivalry and the birth of narrative-driven games that would mold future game design. By 1987, the industry was regaining momentum, marked by the blossoming of gaming communities, fan clubs, and the nascent world of esports. 1988 further amplified this growth, with pivotal moments like the launch of Nintendo Power and the early seeds of today's vast online gaming community. The crescendo came in 1989, as the industry diversified with milestones like the Sega Genesis release, gaming's debut on TV and film, and intriguing collaborations, exemplified by Nintendo's partnership with Fidelity Investments, showcasing the industry's expanding horizons.Featured Games:The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, Dragon Quest, Space Harrier, Out Run, Mega Man, Contra, Final Fantasy, Punch Out, The Legend of Zelda 2, Phantasy Star, Double Dragon 2, Mega Man 2, Pool of Radiance, Ghouls n Ghosts, Tetris, SimCity, Prince of Persia, Mother, Golden Axe, Ys II, and Ys III. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 2 (00:06) - 1986 (13:11) - 1987 (31:16) - 1988 (40:54) - 1989 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Wonder Boy; all excellent. So I was hoping Space Harrier would scratch the same itch, and I'm happy to say, I've been scratched. This game is dope. It's as simple as I am, but as tough as I'm not. It kinda feels like F-Zero meets Galaga (I know F-Zero came out after it), and while it doesn't do much, the stuff it does does, it does really well. My guest this week is an OG hot dog and one of the guys that made a $1,000 donation to my Extra Life stream last year, McG. He grew up a Master System kid, a Space Harrier fan, and he took me to the church of Sega this week. Insert whatever you're supposed to say at the church here. Amen? And before we harry it up in space, I race through another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if consoles could be on the way out, and one platform for all games could be on its way in? Will Fire Emblem ever get some RTG love? We say you can fly right up to it, so that your nude chest grazes along its surface as you circumnavigate its plasmic equator at one billion miles per hour, like you are Space Harrier himself, skirting along the edge of the troposphere, shooting energy bullets from your face, and what oh okay. In this one, Joe does a squish, and Log wants to give you a job at his pub. See you at one thousand!

This week, I played a HOT NEW GAME from 2017, at least in Japan: Kyoei Toshi (aka The City Shrouded in Shadow) (aka Disaster Report Kaiju). Then it's time once again for Star Track, with the focus being Star Track VI: The Undiscovered Country, but of course it leads to a lot of George rambling about episodes of TNG. In Retro Corner, we talk about Detana!! Twinbee, OutRun, and a bit of Space Harrier because George's mind is so Track-Rotted he forgot we already did that. With Valve moving into the handheld market, we reflect on whether there's a place for a Switch-style PC in this episode. Plus! This week's music is from the Heavy Rain soundtrack by the late Normand Corbeil, the Control soundtrack by Petri Alanko and Martin Stig Andersen, and the Space Harrier soundtrack by Hiroshi Kawaguchi and Yu Suzuki.

Patří k nim i Angličan Cooksey. Jako zvukový a hudební producent s malým týmem MTW Music pomáhá herním studiím nejrůznějších velikostí s ozvučením her do dneška. Se svými osmibitovými melodiemi se ale nerozloučil. Některé z nich přepracoval pro orchestr a zazněly v rámci koncertů herní hudby.

Its episode 200! Lucy came down to Bristol and we went on a bit of a pub crawl. First stop was the Left-Handed Giant brewpub. We had Kriek (Boon), Kriek Boon, All On Green (Burnt Mill & Other Half), Wide Awake (Verdant & LHG), Time Will Tell (LHG), Making Planets (LHG), and Up Late (Verdant & LHG). We spoke about Space Harrier, All of the Dooms (and mods), backwards compatibility and nostalgia, franchise vs beer naming, Dreams and asset stores, and the best TMNT games and turtle. The next stop was the Beer emporium where we had the Ripple in Time (Electric Bear) and Latte Stout (Yeovil Ales). We chatted a bit about Animal Crossing, mostly about Tom Nook's kindness. We then headed off further in the night, but stopped the remembering to record.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new series on 1999's Sega cult classic Shenmue. We've visited 1999 before, so we briefly set it in context before moving on to the salient question: What even is this game? We talk about the way the story begins, the environment interactivity, and the "open world" and time, among other topics. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up until we're looking for Warehouse 8 Issues covered: what this game was relative to 1999, the most expensive title of its day, lack of commercial success, a strange turn for Yu Suzuki, the importance of SEGA in the industry at the time, how much of Ryo's story has been told, Dreamcast's weird experiments, the change of the Japanese market, not even really knowing what this game was, starting from scratch even from a genre perspective, "full reactive eyes entertainment" or FREE, getting into the cold open, motivating the player, giving you an in to the mystery and the start of play, player and character motivations tightly linked, slowly introducing you to the world, removing some of the mechanics of mourning, the Band-Aid of power, "pointless interaction," little cutscenes with his father, methodical slow initial pacing, being worried about a full inventory, quickly removing a picture from the wall, a sort of tech fetishization, attention to detail, feeling like a simulation, what kind of simulation this is, very elaborate per-character scripting, the sorts of ways we simulate these days, the cost of developing a game like this, other highly scheduled games of the time, day-night schedules, always having the clock on the HUD, lack of time manipulation, learning to know your location, learning the schedules of characters, seeing a character leave or arrive at his apartment, being able to theorize about what characters it made sense to talk to, calling back to text adventures, process of elimination vs logic-ing out, systemic conversation options, automating something similar to Ultima keywords, spaces in the notebook, having cultural aspects in the story, integrating into a foreign culture, likely personal goals for the game, an allegory for certain clashes, the fortune-teller, upsetting the DAoC economy, staying away from the WoW economy, making crafting more or less optional, encouraging interaction between players or not, insider training in WoW, real world money, getting around in WoW, playing modless, finding a place again a decade later, having those moments you can't have any other way, being aware of your market and building budget-appropriate. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Charlie Chaplin, System Shock 2, Planescape: Torment, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, EverQuest, Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, Counterstrike, Alien vs Predator, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Team Fortress Classic, Half-Life, Quake, Final Fantasy VIII, Medal of Honor, The Longest Journey, Sierra, Unreal Tournament, Homeworld, Silent Hill, Super Smash Bros, Mario Party 2, Dreamcast, Crazy Taxi, The Offspring, Soulcalibur, Yu Suzuki, Hang-On, Space Harrier, Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, Out Run, Afterburner, SEGA, Blue Dragon, Phantasy Star Online I & II, Sonic Adventure, Blue Stinger, Seaman, Samba de Amigo, Rez, Ikaruga, PlayStation 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, Trespasser, Gone Home, The Sims, Majora's Mask, Groundhog Day, Ocarina of Time, GTA III, Assassin's Creed (series), Bethesda Game Studios, Skyrim, Deadline, Witness, LucasArts, Ultima (series), Yakuza (series), Godzilla, jesusfreak144000, Eric Fox, Dark Age of Camelot, World of Warcraft, EVE Online, Makendi/Aaron, Twitch, Curse, Ashton Herrmann, Morrowind, Dark Souls, Game Maker's Toolkit, Dead Space (series), Frank Gibeau, Mark Brown. Next time: Up until the end of the next open world section Links: Could not find the gold farmer article, sorry!
Games List: Galaxy Force II [FM Towns] Planet Harriers The Rub Rabbits! (Aka-chan wa Doko Kara Kuru no?) This week's Pick n' Mix takes a different approach to the one scheduled, instead looking at 3 games with no correlation to each other other than the fact that they all have great music! Won't you come and get FM funky with the rabbits in the fantasy zone?

Welcome back! How's it spinnin'? All the turny parts turnin'? Excellent, because we have good stuff for that platter of yours in our 31rd ("thirty firrrd") episode of Video Game Grooves! We open our listening party with one of the great arcade games of the 1980s, Space Harrier by Hiroshi Kawaguchi, whose work we have recently featured! Anthony helps us squint and look close as we dive into some of the synth compositions of the accomplished artist circa 1985 and the visual juxtaposition of... well... of the weird-ass scenario of Space Harrier at large. Is it a man flying with a gun or a gun flying with a man?? (Hi Scott and Joe!) Next we explore with wanton abandon the imaginative land- and sky-scapes of Hohokum, by a pantheon of great musicians from the Ghostly International label of electronic music. A couple of very-Paul picks are yours to discover, along with the art of Richard Hogg in our gallery below! "The best compiled soundtrack since Katamari Damacy"?? So says Jeremy. What do you say? We cover the news and new releases (and there's a load of 'em!) in the last couple of weeks and help you pick from the records requesting -- nay, demanding -- your time and money! Finally, we spend the third segment considering the possibility that there may be a "video game music on vinyl record bubble", and contemplating what might/could/will happen when it lets out a little air. What do you think about the sustainability of the little niche we love? Let us know in the comments or on social media! No Victor this week, so Shaun is joined by The Taggsta and Daz Domination from 'Stralia, and we have returned to the Fantasy Zone to shoot mammoths in the face. No sign of Opa Opa this time, just a guy with a gun on a mission to destroy. Fly like a really fast bird, or maybe a quick insect, all over the screen. Don't run into owt or you may die. Peace. Ben Elgin and Benj Edwards reconvene with Jeremy to explore the first half of SEGA's arcade output. Like the games we're discussing, the episode starts off a bit shaky, but everything is awesome by 1985. Pengo! Zaxxon! Space Harrier! Hang On! And more!
(raf)
