Today's show is with performance coach, Kurt Hester.  Kurt is currently the Head of Football Preparation at the University of Tulane, and was previously the head strength coach at Lousiana Tech University from 2013 to 2021.  He has decades of experience coaching in both the collegiate, and private sectors, and is the author of the book: ”Rants of a Strength and Conditioning Madman”. When it comes to the results we get out of a training program (or the experience an athlete has in a sport organization), we usually think on the level of sets, reps and exercises.  What we typically don't consider as much, is how an athlete perceives the training from an emotional and sub-conscious, perspective, and how important building the right relationship is to the holistic success of the program. Kurt Hester is the kind of strength coach I wish I had when I was a young athlete.  When we talk about what it means to be a coach, and to be a servant-leader, Kurt is one of the first individuals that comes to mind.  He not only has been studying and living the art of physical training for almost half a century, but he also has a focused sense of how to train individuals on both the athlete, and human levels. On the show today, Kurt talks about how he connects with his athletes on the “human” level, to help improve their total experience as an athlete, gain trust, and improve the quality of training sessions.  He'll talk about how he uses games and fun activities to improve, not only the emotional content of the training sessions, but also the total effort level of the athletes.  Finally, Kurt digs into some details around the sports performance industry itself, what he considers “mental toughness” to truly be, and gives his advice on developmental practices in leadership and communication. Timestamps and Main Points: 5:31 – How Kurt started to survey his athletes to learn more about them, and how this helped him to connect with athletes on a stronger level 10:14 – How to command a room in a coaching setting, while still getting to know athletes on a more personal level 13:27 – How players at Kurt's former university rated the importance of the “strength coach” so high, in regards to why they attended the school 17:432 – Why Kurt uses games as a critical portion of his physical preparation program, as well as the injury prevention benefits of using game-based agility training 29:17 – Kurt's learnings in his training with elite track and field athletes in the 1980's and how many “modern” training methods have been around for a long time 32:14 – How strength coaches should have good all-around GPP, and be able to play games, do dynamic warmups, and demonstrate sprinting 40:15 – What Kurt would re-brand the field of sports performance 48:53 – What Kurt considers “mental strength” and “toughness” to truly be, in light of sports performance training 58:32 – Kurt's advice on helping coaches to be able to understand athletes and lead them on a better level “You can't serve who you don't know” “The athletes who trusted me, and I had the best relationship with, those were the ones who excelled the most… the closer I had a relationship with them that was not about (sports) where they trusted me at a very high level, they developed at a faster rate than an athlete I wasn't close to” “A lot of strength and football coaches think that, if you have fun, that you are not working hard or at a proficient, high level, and I never wanted to be in this field, to not have fun” “Most athletes don't like to train, and that's what most strength coaches don't get… 99% of strength coaches do not understand that fact, they are not you! So that's always in the back of my mind,

*SHOW TIMESTAMPS FEATURED AT THE END*Season 2 and 2020 of Muscles and Management starts with a bang as Louisiana Tech Football Strength Coach Kurt Hester stops by fresh off an Independence Bowl win over University of Miami AND a mini rant by Gerry on the combination of technology and the basics of strength and conditioning. To start, Gerry reads off a tweet of Kurt's regarding professionalism, and how the lack thereof can be problematic for the field as a whole. Kurt discusses the importance of bringing energy and enthusiasm to the field, but also maintains the position that there is a fine line between energy and maintaining professionalism, or losing it. The two discuss how theatrical coaches can negatively impact the perception of strength coaches, and how the ultimate goal of a coach should be developing athletes, not seeking attention. From there, the conversation shifts to a full discussion of the "high performance model," an organizational structure that is starting to make its way to college and professional sports. Kurt gives a breakdown of what it is, and how having a position that directly oversees hiring and firing performance staff can make for an environment of continuity, collaboration and ultimate performance. To finish, Gerry does a brief Q&A on volume guidelines for sprinting and gives a breakdown on the differences between his assessments of individual athletes vs. large teams (and what goes into both). All that and more on this episode of Muscles and Management!Timestamps:00:43 - Please Keep Jeff Leach (@CoachJeffLeach) in Your Thoughts and Prayers04:48 - Year in Review11:30 - Tweet Rant of The Week (Mastering The Basics AND Utilizing Technology)19:14 - Episode 53 Outline22:40 - Chris Doyle27:20 - The Landscape of Strength Coaches & Motivations30:35 - Balancing High Energy and Professionalism34:35 - High-Performance Model39:40 - Old Dog, New Tricks47:16 - The Problem with Being Stuck in Your Ways48:56 - Kurt Hester’s Influences in His Career52:52 - How Many Sprints is too Many?58:38 - How to Assess Different ClientsSupport the show (http://www.challengerstrength.com)

Topics under discussion include starting a business, pioneering strength and conditioning, and the interview process. Find Kurt on Twitter: @thekurthester or on Instagram: @hesterkurt | Find Scott on Instagram: @coachcaulfieldShow Notes“And you have to come to a point, as a man or a woman, and say, you know what? I want to do what’s right by my athletes. Over this undying loyalty to a sport coach.” 3:52 “My staff understands the emergency protocol of assessing the athlete of high-volume O2 if we have it down on the field, then immediately submerge in the ice mass, and then calling 9-1-1. So it’s an action plan that, if a young trainer gets, basically, shell-shocked and can’t move and can’t think, that we can go into action and help out.” 8:41 “You have to look at the heat index, how hot it is on turf versus how hot is it on the grass, the humidity level, your wind, your wind direction. There’s a lot of things that you have to utilize and understand, use that information, in taking your protocol, and either taking away reps or adding reps.” 9:59 “I like to bash my head into other humans. I love the physicalness of football. But I love the middle aspect of getting ready for the game. And that’s why I got into the—more, I got into the field. Not from the lifting aspect, because I love to train, but I loved what you had to do mentally to prepare to play a warrior sport.” 16:05 “That whole people side of things, relationship-building, is kind of the ‘X’ factor in this profession, right? You can have written the greatest program, but if you can’t get athletes to believe in what you’re selling and what you’re telling them is going to help them, then it doesn’t really matter anyway.” 28:05 “And if you’re in it for yourself, if you’re in it for your social media hits, and your tweets, and your likes, you’re in it for the wrong reason. This field is not about a coach, it is about the humans you do coach.” 29:03 “And that’s where you start learning more by interacting with other coaches and throwing around a ton of ideas.” 44:26 “It’s connected either at @thekurthester on Twitter, or it’s Hester Kurt on Instagram. Email khester@latech.edu.” 47:02 “We’re always looking for free interns. Being in Ruston, Louisiana, which is in north Louisiana, it’s not very big, it’s kind of hard to get help. So if you’re willing to learn and willing to work, I’ll take you in a heartbeat. If you’re breathing and you’re ambulatory, we’re good to go.” 47:46
