Life is a juggling act. The balls we juggle are home, family, school, work, church, friends, and activities.  Sometimes one of those balls drops.  This week for our family, one of those did. A big one. And it reminded us all of how precious life is and how fragile it is as well. Join me in this week's episode as I talk about my sister and her husband and their new journey to Crush Cancer!

Life Without A Clue

On this week's episode, the ladies sit down with breast cancer warrior Myiah White and she shares her story of how she crushed cancer. Myiah opens up about her cancer journey detailing the importance of a village, parenting while ill, getting closer to God, and becoming a voice for so many other young women. She also talks about her love for gardening and why it's vital to watch what we consume. Join these three ladies as they discuss the disease that's taking over so many women in the black community and how we can learn to combat it. Myiah shows us that cancer isn't a death wish, it's the motivation you need to fight a little bit harder and find your true purpose in life. Intro Music

Today's guest is Dara Kurtz; she's a writer, speaker, podcaster, and blogger of "Crazy Perfect Life" and shares her wisdom on life, loss, and love. She discusses why we should take a hard look at what's important in our lives. Dara's secret to having a happy life is living fully and loving deeply. Her mom's death held her back for a long time, and she wasn't able to make the most of her life or relationships because she didn't want to risk getting hurt again. Dara shows us the importance of opening our hearts, letting people in, and why we can't live life to our best ability if we worry about what might happen. Dara also encourages us to go for anything we want because what's the worst that can happen?  Dara Kurtz is a wife and mother, and at the age of 42 she was diagnosed with cancer. Going through chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery changed Dara's perspective; what she thought was important wasn't so important anymore. She decided to leave her 20-year career as a personal banker and financial advisor to focus on writing. Her blog, "Crazy Perfect Life," has over 200,000 followers. She is the author of three books, Crush Cancer, The Crush Cancer Workbook, and I Am My Mother's Daughter. When Dara was 28, she lost her mother to cancer. She recently wrote a book about the letters and lessons from both her mother and grandmothers, which includes tips that can help strengthen our relationships or help us move forward in our journey in finding love. Kerry Brett and Dara Kurtz cover a lot of ground, topics include;Embrace that life isn't perfect and messy, and all you can do is the best you can.Why we need to stop reviewing regrets. How to keep the keys to your own happiness in your pocket. Why you need to stop caring or worrying about how other people are going to react to us.Why it's important to stop trying to be perfect and live a peaceful life. Why you should challenge yourself, face your fears and ask yourself the worst that can happen? If you don't push yourself and try different things, you can rob yourself of love and joy.You develop more confidence by taking risks and bringing in new experiences. We need to stop being stuck in pain and get back to the business of living. Why you need to stop putting things off and star living for today. Why we should make the of precious time with loved ones.If we close our hearts, then we are cheating ourselves on some of the best positive experiences.Count your blessings instead of your problems. You can learn to recognize and replace negative stories and decide what you want to tell yourself to believe. If you expect good things to happen, they usually do.The world can be our playground if we let it.For more information about Dara Kurtz you can find out more on www.crazyperfectlife.com  Follow on Facebook Crazy Perfect Life by Dara Kurtz and Instagram @crazyperflife.

In this episode, I'm talking to Kate Williams, exercise physiologist who the creator of Movement Against Cancer program. Kate specialises in exercise oncology and gives some fantastic, real world advice on how you can use exercise to support you during and after cancer. In the interview with Kate we get to find out more about: how exercise helps crush cancer during treatment and recovery the importance of regular evidence-based prescriptive exercise how to find the sweet spot by pushing yourself far enough without exhaustion practical ideas on healthy habits including nutrition and mindfulness types of exercise that are most helpful when dealing with cancer Links Movement Against Cancer Exercise and Sports Science Australia Cancer Council Victoria Full Transcript Joe:                 Hey, Kate.  Thanks very much for taking the time to speak to me, I really appreciate it.  Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself, what you do and what are you passionate about? Kate:                Sure, well, thanks very much for having me on today, Joe.  The first thing is, I'm an accredited exercise physiologist.  I've been practicing for about eight years now, working with people with a whole range of different chronic medical issues.  At the moment, I work at DNA Health Group, which is a private practice based in Cheltenham, in the Bay Side Suburbs of Melbourne.  About four years ago, I realized that I had a bit of a passion and an interest in exercise oncology and co-founded the movement: Against Cancer Program around that time.  Yes, really specializing a bit more in that area.  In terms of work, that's what keeps me ticking.  Personally, I like keeping active myself.  Lot of road cycling particularly.  I like taking my little dog down to the beach and having a bit of run around.  Other than that, what am I passionate about?  All the typical Melbourne things, food and coffee and my football team. Joe:                 Yes, which is? Kate:                Hawthorn.  Big Hawks fan. Joe:                 Fantastic, Kate.  In your experience, what are the most common misconceptions that people have around cancer?  Is it even a good idea to exercise when you have cancer?  If it is, what are some of the benefits of exercise during cancer? Kate:                The biggest misconception is probably a pretty obvious one, is that people feel that it's not safe, which is understandable in a way, because historically cancer patients have been told to take it easy and rest.  Why would someone who feels sick, why would they feel like the best thing to do is a workout and spend what little energy they feel like they have right now.  The thing is, we certainly have plenty of evidence to say that exercise is perfectly safe.  In fact, to my knowledge, I'm yet to see a study that suggests exercise isn't safe.  There are definitely very good arguments to suggest that anyone who is undergoing treatment for cancer or has undergone treatment for cancer in the past should be doing exercise.  The list is very long in terms of benefits.  I don't know how much time we've got. Certainly, we know that it really helps people to cope better with treatments, particularly with things, common side effects, fatigue is a big one, pain and nausea.  It also can really help to stabilize some of the body composition changes that patients go through.  For example, a lot of men who undergo hormone treatment, they lose a lot of muscle mass and they gain a lot of body fat.  We know that exercise can help to basically reverse that process, or at least maintain it.  Bone density can be a big issue with these treatments, as well.  We know that exercise can help maintain bone density.  This obviously could increase strength and fitness and improve people's everyday function.  All of those activities they do on a daily basis can become a bit easier with the right exercise program.  It also has a wonderful effect on mental health,

Is Cancer a Metabolic (Mitochondrial) Disease? Our guest on the OPP today, Dr. Thomas Seyfried says it is. Dr. Thomas Seyfried is a leading cancer researcher, Biology professor at Boston College and author of the book Cancer as a Metabolic Disease. His work focuses on epigenetic and metabolic nutritional therapies for neurological and mitochondrial diseases.      According to Dr. Seyfried, cancer is a mitochondrial metabolic disease. His Press-Pulse protocol of ketosis, fasting, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) created with colleague Dominic D’Agostino is producing amazing results in animals, dogs, and people.   On today's show, we explore: Why Dr. Seyfried thinks genetic tests are a waste of time & money Why neuroinflammation should scare you (Hint: it's linked to almost every major disease) How cancer could be single disease with a single cause, and a single cure Why calories restriction - and fasting - signals our healthy cells to improve themselves How ketosis starves cancer cells and helps heal the body Why protecting our mitochondria may be our best method to reduce our risk of cancer How Dr. Seyfried and Dominic D'Agostino linked up to create the Press-Pulse method of starving cancer with ketosis, then destroying it with Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments (HBOT) The frustrating truth about why the scientific and medical communities are not rushing to fund studies and implement these treatment protocols Dr. Seyfried is a brilliant man who is asking the right questions and taking great strides to advance our understanding of cancer and health in general. You'll hear and see more of Dr. Seyfried's Press-Pulse anticancer treatments in the book Tripping Over The Truth and the forthcoming Dog and Cancer Series. We're honored to have him on the OPP, and excited to share this information with you.
