After 22+ years of coaching at the D-I level, Coach Bewley stepped out of his previous coaching role as Director of Basketball Strength & Conditioning at Clemson University and joined PLAE in July as their Global Director of Performance and Education.
Clemson University Head Coach Brad Brownell hired Bewley before the 2016-17 basketball season to advance the Tigers' efforts in the weight room. That decision came to fruition when the Tigers advanced to the 2018 Sweet 16 after being picked second to last to finish in the ACC, capping only the fourth time in school history; the Tigers made a Sweet 16 appearance. Also, Bewley helped the Tigers win Basketball Gold in the FISU University World Games, beat three Top-5 teams in a single season, and snapped a 59-game losing streak to beat the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill. Before his Clemson tenure, Bewley was Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning for the Yellow Jackets from 2012-16, helping Georgia Tech to the National Invitation Tournament's quarterfinals (NIT) in March 2016. He was charged with implementing athletic performance and sports nutrition programs for Georgia Tech men's basketball and men's tennis in four seasons.
Before his appointment in Atlanta, Bewley was the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for Basketball & Golf at the University of Dayton from 2005-12. During his tenure, Bewley helped the Dayton Flyers Basketball programs experience improved and sustained success. The men's team captured an NCAA Tournament Appearance to the Round of 32 (2009) and an NIT National Championship (2010). In the same period, the women's team seized an A-10 Conference Tournament Championship (2012), three NCAA Tournament Appearances (2010, 2011, 2012), with one advancing to the Round of 32 (2010). Bewley also served as the Specialist in Sports Nutrition at Dayton. Before his tenure with the Flyers, Bewley spent 2002-06 as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach and Specialist in Sports Nutrition at Georgia Southern University. He developed and implemented athletic performance programs for baseball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball while in Statesboro. The Way of Champions Podcast is brought to you by Sports Refund. When kids sign up to play youth sports there are always fees involved. And parents pay those fees so their child can be on the team, not the injury report. That’s why I love Sports Refund, and parents will too. Sports Refund is low-cost sports fee insurance – NOT health insurance, sports fee insurance. So if your child becomes injured or sick and can’t play, you get your fees reimbursed for that lost time, from one game to an entire season. It’s that simple. This product not only saves families wasted fees, it saves injured athletes the stress of feeling like they’re wasting their parents’ money. The fees come back until the player comes back. So they can focus on fully recovering and making a healthy return to the game. Sports Refund has options for individuals and organizations. Ask your club if they offer it, or visit SportsRefund.com/Game to learn more and sign up today. That’s SportsRefund.com/Game. Can’t Play? Don’t Pay. With Sports Refund. Matt recently hooked me up with some Kings tickets when I was in LA which was extremely kind of him. We didn't get a chance to chat before or after the game but thankfully we were able to make this episode happen and have a good conversation about what is going on at the LA Kings. In Episode 043 of the D&D Fitness Radio podcast, we speak with veteran physical therapist Robert Panariello, who also worked extensively as a Strength and Conditioning coach for a good number of years. Because injuries are a part of life for anyone who is active, we discuss the key issues around both minimizing the occurrence of injury, but also developing a strategy around treating injuries effectively. Rob identifies scenarios where injuries can occur and outlines the process followed to ensure successful outcomes. Individuals must also do their homework when searching for a rehabilitation professional to assist them with their recovery from injury. A plan must be developed that progressively takes the patient from injury and inactivity to greater function and more intense levels of activity regardless if they are a professional athlete, regular adult or young athlete. Buddy Morris Interview Growing up in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, my heroes were Pittsburgh sports figures.  The Steelers were almost surreal to me as a fan and other than attending Jack Lambert's Football Camp and training camps in Latrobe, Pennsylvania; they were untouchable.  The University of Pittsburgh Football players were in fact more than just giants of the game, they were part of our culture.  Guys like Jim Sweeney, Bill Fralic, and Mark Stepnoski were friends of my older cousins and in some way, almost like big brothers to all of us playing pick-up football in the cobblestone streets of the Iron City.  Dan Mario played baseball for my grandfather up until his junior year at Pitt. And, all of us "yinzers" were heartbroken when Tony Dorsett started wearing a start on his helmet and played for America's team.  The icon who prepared most of those men was why, in a round-a-bout way, I became a strength and conditioning coach myself.  Buddy Morris has always been someone who most of us looked up to.  Even when he told you things you didn't want to hear about training and physical preparation.  Coach X became a staple of elitefts.com and videos of when Dave and Jim visited he and Mylo when they were coaching the Cleveland Browns still rank as some of the top learning experiences. If there is one thing that is evident is that Buddy Morris was meant to be a strength coach.  Buddy makes no apologies for being who he is. He has the knowledge and the experience to validate what he believes, while always questioning whether there is a better way to do things. Buddy knows it was, is, and will never be about him. "Buddy's one of the All-Timers, he helped start this profession," explains Joe Kenn, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach with the Carolina Panthers. "Nobody talks enough about Buddy being one of the pioneers." With over 3 decades of experience, no one can deny Buddy Morris' impact on the strength and conditioning profession and the athletes he has coached. American Football Physical Preparation was written to expose football players, physical preparation and sport coaches, to the concepts of one of the original coaches of physical preparation for football, Buddy “Coach X” Morris. In this book, you will find information regarding the theory, methodology, bioenergetics, biodynamics, and bio-motor abilities, as they pertain to American Football. This information is unique, as it explains why football is an alactic-aerobic sport, which bio-motor abilities are most important, how biodynamics play into exercise selection, and how each team, side of the ball, position, and even individual, needs their own specific programming. In the final section of the book, you will find practical examples of training cycles, monthly blocks, training weeks, and individual workouts, all tailored for five distinct training groups: Line, Combo, Skill, Quarterback, and Kicker/Punter. As a whole, American Football Physical Preparation will give all readers an exclusive look, and insight, of how the training process is organized, programmed and implemented, in a large team setting for American Football.
