This is a bittersweet episode and one that I have procrastinated on for over a month because a month ago I decided that I was going to end the Resonance Rising podcast. And this was a decision that didn't come lightheartedly. I spent a lot of time deliberating this because over the last year that I've been doing this podcast, which has been an incredible journey for me, not only the podcast, but this last year in my life has been a year of significant transformation on all fronts. And as I evolved as a person, as I've grown and expanded, I realized That the theme of this podcast was resonating less and less with me. While I love the topics that this podcast covers, while I love learning about and exploring the world of sound. Electromagnetics, light, and how we can harness those to improve our health, to empower ourselves, to find alternative ways to heal and optimize our health and our mind. To me, it just covered a sliver of what I'm truly passionate about. And what I'm truly passionate about is personal development, is spirituality, is evolving and growing and expanding as a human on all fronts. And for a while I was contemplating whether or not I was going to keep resonance rising and just pivot the theme of the podcast. But about a month ago, I was talking to a dear friend of mine and one of my spiritual mentors, Mitra Manesh, And I joked with her, I was telling her about this, wanting to do this pivot in the podcast. And I joked with her about her co-hosting the podcast with me. And she said, you know what, that sounds like a great idea. And I was not at all anticipating that I was going to bring on a co host. But in that moment, it just resonated so deeply with both of us that we decided, Okay, we're going to do this. We're going to create a new podcast together. And we contemplated whether or not we were going to use resonance rising, but it didn't make sense. We wanted to create something new, something fresh that was birthed from an energy that is reflective of who I am and who Mitra is today. And so I officially decided to bring a close to the Resonance Rising podcast to create space for something new that me and Mitra are planning on bringing to the world. It looks like by July of this year, so in a couple months. Doing this podcast has been such a gift for me because it has helped me break through a lot of limiting paradigms that I had about myself. A year ago, when I started this podcast, I was terrified. I told myself, I'm an introvert. Who do I think I am, starting a podcast? I'm not that great at asking questions. How am I going to sound interesting on a podcast? I don't know. And I said, fuck it. Granted, I had help because at the time I had my friend and co host Lauren Weinstein. And Lauren really encouraged me and inspired me to do it and to do it with me. And the first five or 10 episodes, we did it together before she realized that she needed to focus her energies on a different path. And it was such a blessing for me because I learned through that whole process that all those perceived limitations that I had about myself were bullshit. They were bullshit. I love to podcast. I love to converse. I am great at asking questions. I am engaging with my guests. And I realized that there's a whole side of me that I didn't even know existed. And I'm so grateful for that. And I'm so grateful for you, the audience, because if it wasn't for your curiosity, if it wasn't for your commitment to empowering yourselves with knowledge, to discovering new and better ways to live healthier and happier lives. I wouldn't have the motivation and inspiration to have kept this podcast going. To know that you all were out there and benefiting from this knowledge and this wisdom was fuel for me. And I want to thank you so much for that. I imagine you, the listener, are someone who has a curiosity about life, someone who is probably relentless in your pursuit to finding a better way, a better way in doing anything in life, in particular, a better way of taking care of your health and your wellbeing. And you're not someone, I imagine, who settles for the status quo. And for that, I'm so grateful. Because it is people like you who give hope to humanity. You give energy, you give motivation, you give inspiration to the people who are doing the research, creating the technologies that are exploring the new frontiers. You create new possibilities, all of us, because of your curiosity and because of your commitment to going beyond the status quo. And so keep feeding your curiosity, keep exploring new ways to heal your body, your minds and spirits. Keep hope for a healthier and happier life for you. Something I haven't talked much about on this podcast is my spirituality and my connection to prayer, not as a religious thing. Prayer as a mode of setting intentions in a declarative way. And it's something I love to do not only for myself but for other people. So before I say goodbye for the time being, I would love to give you I wish for you to be living the healthiest, happiest, most vital life that you possibly can for yourself. I wish that your life is filled with joy and love and peace. A deep, happy life. Inner peace. And from that inner peace, joy naturally expresses itself. I pray and I wish for you to be living your most abundant and prosperous life. That prosperity flows, not only into your life financially, but is reflected in all areas of your life. That all parts of your life, financial, your intimate relationships, your friendships, your health and well being, everything is in perfect harmony. For that is the way we were meant to live our lives. It's just a process of remembering. It's a process of clearing those things within us and around us that are interfering from us experiencing our true nature. And so I wish for you to realize this for yourself, and I wish for you to take the path that is most graceful and easy for you. That as you evolve, that as you grow, and as you face your challenges, That it's done with grace, that it's done with ease, that you are guided and supported in a manner that makes the process a whole lot of fun for you. Amen. Goodbye for now and thank you.

As communicators, we often need to take complex information (e.g., financial, technical, or scientific) and make it more understandable for our audience – we’re experts and they likely aren’t. But having so much knowledge on the topics we discuss can often make the job more difficult: we dive in too quickly, forget about our audience's needs, or use jargon that goes over their heads. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, strategic communications lecturers Matt Abrahams and Lauren Weinstein explore the “curse of knowledge” and offer specific techniques you can use to be more successful in getting your point across.
Because of a last-minute guest cancellation, I had no show lined up for this week! Rather than take a second week off this summer, I decided it was time for another Gil Roth AMA episode, since the last one was almost 5 years ago. Thirty-two past and upcoming guests and Patreon supporters came through with questions for me, including (in the order I answered them): Ken Krimstein, Hugh Ryan, Barry Corbett, Joe Ciardiello, Glynnis Fawkes, Kyle Cassidy, Ian Kelley, Kate Lacour, Dean Haspiel, Eddy Portnoy, Kate Maruyama, Tom Spurgeon, Jonathan Hyman, David Leopold, Paine Proffitt, David Townsend, Boaz Roth, Chris Reynolds, Liniers, Caleb Crain, Bob Eckstein, Ersi Sotiropoulos, Andrea Tsurumi, Henry Wessells, Vanessa Sinclair, Jim Ottaviani, Maria Alexander, Mary Fleener, Stephen Nadler, Charles Blackstone, Lauren Weinstein, and David Shields. We cover everything from creative lessons learned to "why so many cartoonists?", from what books I re-read and why to who is on my Mount Rushmore list of dream guests, from the comics and GNs that have affected me most to what I think about the Peak TV era, from how running has affected my podcast-practices to who my most obstreperous guest has been, and plenty more! And it was all done in a single two-hour take, so give it a listen! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal
On May 13, 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that Apple may face antitrust liability in a consumer suit over purchases made from the Apple App Store. That may sound like an unremarkable proposition (and Apple in fact may still prevail). But the basis for the decision in Apple v. Pepper is one that will reverberate for years in the courts and the U.S. economy – that consumers who buy products from a platform like the App Store may be considered a direct purchaser and thus allowed to bring lawsuits against the platform concerning alleged anticompetitive conduct. Other technology companies may face antitrust liability they did not expect, companies may seek to restructure their business dealings to avoid liability, and there may be continued challenges to the viability of the federal (but not state) antitrust doctrine that limits liability only to direct (not indirect) purchasers. And – in an interesting fact not unnoticed by Supreme Court observers – the majority opinion written by newly-seated Justice Kavanaugh drew a dissenting opinion by his fellow Trump appointee Justice Gorsuch and joined by all of the other Republican-appointed justices.Come hear immediate reactions to the Apple v. Pepper decision from two experienced antitrust practitioners who participated in the case – Andrew Finch, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division, and Lauren Weinstein of MoloLamken’s Washington, DC, office, who represented a group of 18 antitrust professors that filed an amicus brief in the case. Adam Biegel of Alston & Bird’s Washington, DC, office and a member of the Executive Board of the Federalist Society’s Corporations, Securities, and Antitrust Practice Group, will moderate the teleconference.Featuring: Andrew Finch, Principal Deputy Attorney General, Antitrust Division, Department of Justice Lauren M. In 2015 Carriers became Lauren Weinstein’s most critically acclaimed work to date. The five-part webcomic series found the cartoonist winning widespread recognition and a number of awards, including The The Society of Illustrators’ Gold Medal. Weinstein’s work has never shied away from the personal, but motherhood has found her examining her own life even more intently than earlier work. The series explores the anxiety and fear of discovering that both she and her husband are carriers of the gene that causes cystic fibrosis. After the birth of her second child, the artist says she’s ready to finish a long awaited (15 years and counting) book about her own teenage years — one that may finally arrive as her own oldest child becomes a teenager herself. Weinstein also works at the School of Visual Arts, teaching both teenagers and continuing education students. In another life, she was also the lead singer of New York-based art rock collective, Flaming Fire.

Village Voice cartoonist Lauren Weinstein joins the show to talk about the balancing act of making comics. We get into how she integrates the political and the personal, finds humor alongside near-tragedy, and deals with the temptation to do self-help/identity comics. We also get into how she manages the tightrope walk of motherhood and comics-making (esp. with a 10-month-old who's constantly grabbing for her ink), the conversation around a comic she did about potentially passing along a hereditary disease to her unborn daughter, the moral tensions of teaching comics, drawing strips for digital vs. print, the transformative effect of reading Dan Clowes' Art School Confidential strip, having an on-stage persona for a mutant band where the mantra was "keep your eye off the ball", needing neck surgery but worrying how paralysis would affect her cartooning, and more! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal
