Ray reveals the power of vulnerability and centering others, and the need for men to show up in a different way.
Ray Arata kicks off Act 2 with a discussion about Heart Based Leadership – a framework of emotional literacy that Ray distills down to “power of the heart.” Our conversation quickly turns to real life comparisons between the toxic masculinity of Vladimir Putin and the heart-based Leadership Volodymyr Zelenskyy has shown throughout the ongoing Russian war on Ukraine. We dip into privilege from a mess of different angles, play with opening “the man box”, touch on accidents of birth, shine a light on what happens when “guys are just guys” in a corporate meeting room with all men and just one woman, poke at facing responsibility and collective homophobia… And that's just a small sampling of where the conversation goes! Ray shares a few stories from his newest book, Showing Up: How Men Can Become Effective Allies in the Workplace, citing some not-so-pretty examples of unconscious privilege in action. He underlines the importance of making the effort to develop real-world practices that create true allyship - personally and professionally. We bring Act 2 home with some great information on the Better Man Conference, some grounded advice on next steps, and an invitation from Ray to reach out!Ray Arata is an award-winning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) leader and speaker, consultant, and trainer, with global clients from PwC to Verizon to Toyota to Bloomberg. Ray Arata, author, DEI expert and founder of the Better Man Conference, opens Act 1 by discussing some of the most formative experiences of his life. Ray tells of a “one-two-punch” wake-up call in 1991 that helped shape him into the man he is today, when he faced divorce on two fronts; one from his wife, the other from a business partner, all in the span of weeks. Ray reflects on the pain he experienced (and unconsciously spread) and the growth he was able to achieve later, only after truly examining himself and learning to trade external validation for self-acceptance. Through his experience with the Mankind Project and the introspection it inspired, Ray was able to recognize how his deep-rooted pain and buried emotions contributed to the dissolution of his first marriage: “My then wife didn't sign up to be my mother, but for all intents and purposes, the little boy in me was running the show.” Ray muses on the importance and impact of MKP's New Warrior weekend where, in the company of men, he was able to see himself clearly and begin to unpack repeating behavioral patterns. His awakening and transformation firmly on track, Ray learned much about emotions, accountability, integrity, and the importance of being in community with other men doing their own work. “I was determined to not ever go back to sleep,” and to that end, he continued the rigorous work of carefully unraveling himself to build back stronger.Ray wraps Act 1 with a discussion about power and the different ways it can manifest. We riff on the functions - and dysfunctions - of power, drawing key distinctions between the power of wounded shadow and ego versus the power of the heart.Ray Arata is an award-winning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) leader and speaker, consultant, and trainer, with global clients from PwC to Verizon to Toyota to Bloomberg. It's not always easy to be told about or recognize your own privilege. Or to show up and be your best person. We're sharing the story of Ray Arata, who has dedicated his life to working with men on living and leading from the heart. Advancing healthy masculinity in the leadership conversation. Creating a safe space for men to move out of their heads and be whole humans. Ray shares his own experiences of recognising the rights, privileges and opportunities of being a (white) man. His man-in-the-mirror moment and how he ended up launching himself into the D&I space, forever an ally in training. An ally to gender equality at first, then broadening into wider diversity & inclusion consulting. “Here's an invitation to a men's group. Call my wife, she'll tell you. It changed my life.” The unavoidable light is shining on men to rewrite the narrative. The outdated playbook of what it means to be a man. To decide to get interested in what the lived experiences of other people are. “This all sounds great, but where do I start?” When you're not yet past your fear of saying or doing the wrong thing – so you do nothing, for now. Or when you want to do something and aren't sure yet what, exactly. Ray shares his tips in four clear steps for, well, anyone wanting to be an ally to anybody. Show up. Get inspired. Are you being your best person? Life's too short. Keep going. And maybe even go first. David talks with Ray Arata, founder of the Better Man Conference and author of Showing Up: How men can become better allies in the workplace.
The topic of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity is a pretty divisive one right now. Abstractly, we all know that a diverse set of perspectives is helpful, but we also each have horror stories of how policies in the DIE name have been rammed down corporate throats causing destruction. How can we, both as Christians and as open-minded men, maximize the good while avoiding the sludge of politics? Join me in this episode for something a little bit different. I've invited a DEI leader on for an honest, direct, but respectful conversation. There's a little bit of tension, but we find some common ground that I hope will be pretty persuasive. Dr. Ray Arata is a leading DEI expert and a he's a man committed to the second greatest commandment. How do these mix? Join me to find out. “For people like myself, who have a lot of privilege, I try to become aware of other people's experiences. And then I can make a conscious choice: ‘How do I want people to experience me? Listen to this interview with host Natalie Benamou and Rayona Sharpnack as they discuss "Leadership Strategies for Effective Allyship". Why Being a Sponsor and Ally is so Important:>> Having a sponsor, means that person is willing to support and protect their high potential employee. >> Being an Ally includes letting a female candidate choose if a role is right for them without choosing for them based on assumptions. >> When there is a reduction in head count, the sponsor is there to protect that person's job. How to be an Ally: >> Be Curious and check in. Ask how you can lighten that person's load. >> Offer to bargain for time off if that is what they need. Let's talk about masculinity in the workplace. According to Ray Arata (the guest on the podcast this week), there is healthy and unhealthy or toxic masculinity. Much of the latter has been tolerated up until recently. But despite a more optimistic outlook on gender inclusion, there are still too many unwritten rules that drive the behaviors of many men in the workplace. Ray's 8 unhealthy and unwritten rules that men (and sometimes women) carry include: Real men don't show their emotions but anger is okay Real men are always confident Real men don't ask for help Real men make all the decisions Real men are providers, not caregivers Real men are heterosexual and sexually dominant Real men continuously talk and play sports Real men are never handicapped, disabled, or unemployed I've worked in a male-dominated industry before becoming a leadership coach and I have definitely seen all eight of those play out at some point. Some of them in more subtle ways and others in very direct and obvious ways. And it never felt good. To this day, I remember how certain behaviors or comments from co-workers made me feel and the negative impact those experiences had on the relationships. In today's age, time is simply up and things that were tolerated 10 years ago are no longer acceptable. Whether you are a man, a woman, or non-binary, understanding these dynamics and the toxic or unhealthy masculine behaviors is important for all of us! Because even if we're not actively excluding or marginalizing others, being silent in the presence of misbehavior communicates complicity. And I bet that's the last thing you and I want to be. I'm excited to share the conversation on 'How Men Can Become Effective Allies in The Workplace' with author, speaker, and DEI consultant Ray Arata in this week's podcast episode. -- RESOURCES MENTIONED -- Ray Arata's latest book: http://showingupbook.com (plus a way to get a complimentary ticket to the Betterman Conference!)
