Ever wonder why some people seem to grow into their leadership over time, almost as if they're being shaped by life itself?  In this episode, Nicole explores the 6/2 Human Design profile — the Role Model/Hermit — and what makes this path so unique, complex, and ultimately powerful. If you're someone who feels like you're living in chapters, or if life has been asking you to slow down, reflect, and rise when the time is right, this one will resonate deeply. Nicole unpacks the three life phases of the 6-line journey, how the Hermit's natural gifts are revealed over time, and why the role model energy of the 6/2 isn't something you chase — it's something you grow into. She also breaks down how this profile compares to the 3/6 and 4/6, why the rooftop years are so important, and how the call to leadership usually shows up. You'll walk away with a better understanding of why things may not have made sense in your first few decades — and why your most important work might be just beginning. With real-world examples of famous 6/2s and honest reflections on how to embrace this profile fully, this episode is both grounding and inspiring. Whether you are a 6/2 or love someone who is, this conversation will help you see the brilliance in the timing, the beauty in the waiting, and the power in finally being seen. Ever feel like you're meant to lead but just want to be left alone? If that tug-of-war sounds familiar, you might be living the 5/2 experience. In this episode, Nicole unpacks the complexity of the Heretic Hermit profile—a powerful yet often misunderstood combination in Human Design. You'll explore how the 5/2 operates with both projected lines, why its gifts must be self-recognized before they can truly shine, and what makes this profile fundamentally different from the 5/1. Nicole explains how the tension between public expectation and private genius can create confusion—and how understanding this pattern can unlock clarity, especially in how you show up in your purpose and business. Expect eye-opening insights on projection, self-recognition, and why authority is non-negotiable for the 5/2. Nicole also shares famous 5/2s who exemplify the profile's quiet strength and influential presence in the world. Whether you're a 5/2 or just fascinated by how Human Design shapes expression and leadership, this episode offers a fresh perspective you won't want to miss.   Learn more about your Human Design and get your full chart for free at https://www.nicolelaino.com/chart   Content by Design Program: www.nicolelaino.com/content Be sure to visit nicolelaino.com/podcastlinks for all of the current links to events, freebies, and more! 5 steps to designing the life you want

Designers spend their days dreaming up better products and better worlds, and you can use their thinking to re-envision your own life, says design professor Bill Burnett. He shares five tips to try, whether you're at the start of your career or contemplating your next act. Executive director of Stanford's design program at the d.School, Bill Burnett uses design thinking, a career's worth of starting companies and coaching students, and a childhood spent drawing cars and airplanes under his Grandmother's sewing machine to inform his work on how to design your life. In five eyebrow-raising findings, Burnett offers simple but life-changing advice on designing the life you want, whether you are contemplating college or retirement. After years of drawing cars and airplanes under his Grandmother's sewing machine, Bill Burnett went to college where he discovered that there were people in the world who did this kind of thing every day (without the sewing machine), and they were called designers. Thirty years, five companies, and a couple thousand students later, Burnett is still drawing and building things, teaching others how to do the same, and quietly enjoying the fact that no one has discovered that he is having too much fun. As Executive Director of the Design Program at Stanford, he runs undergraduate and graduate programs in design, both interdepartmental programs between the mechanical engineering and art departments. Burnett worked on design of the award-winning Apple PowerBooks and the original Hasbro Star Wars action figures. He holds a number of mechanical and design patents. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/getu-chandler/support

We discuss these questions (and more!) in today's Season 3 kick-off episode. We speak to Bill Burnett, the co-author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Designing Your Life and Executive Director of the Design Program at Stanford University, to understand how design thinking can help us create a life and career that is both meaningful and fulfilling! In this actionable and insight-filled episode, Bill unpacks how we can apply the concept of prototyping in our own lives to test out ideas and how we can reframe the dysfunctional beliefs that hold us back. I used to wake up early, around 5:15, and do my workout right after getting out of bed. But I noticed I was tired all day, and just felt kind of stiff and not very strong during my workouts. So I decided to try waking up a couple hours later, and doing my workouts in the late afternoon instead. I found that setting up my schedule this way gave me greater energy, both overall, and during my workouts. My guest says that this tinkering I did with my routine is an example of life prototyping, a process that can be used for anything and everything in order to improve both your personal and professional life. His name is Dave Evans, and as a lecturer in Stanford's Design Program, he teaches the popular Designing Your Life course, which, as the name implies, takes the principles of design thinking, and applies them to crafting a happy and fulfilling life. He's also the co-author, along with Bill Burnett, of Designing Your Life and Designing Your New Work Life. Today on the show, Dave explains how one of the central steps to design thinking — prototyping — can help you make both big and small changes that move you closer to the life you want to lead. He explains what prototyping is, how prototyping a life is different from prototyping a product, the two approaches involved with the former, and embracing the design thinking mindset of being immune to failure.Resources Related to the PodcastThe Designing Your Life Course on Creative LiveAoM Podcast #418 on how to get unstuck in life with the co-founder of Stanford's Design School, Bernie RothAoM series on crafting the life you wantAoM Podcast #731: A Futurist's Guide to Building the Life You WantAoM Article: How to Deal With a Job You Don't LikeAoM article on the OODA LoopConnect With Dave EvansDesigning Your Life Website

For most people the ingredients that go into a satisfying life are mysterious. Certainly career and relationships play a big role but they don't always go as planned which makes satisfaction and happiness mercurial. Bill Burnett, Executive Director of the Design Program at Stanford, founder of Stanford's Life Design Lab, and co-author of two best selling books Designing Your Life and Designing Your Work Life, thinks of life as a design problem that can be prototyped and iterated upon using design thinking. Maybe you're the type of person who already has a life plan. Congrats, you're a rare breed. The problem with most life plans is that our pathway in life is ever changing. How do we plan for the unexpected? In our conversation with Bill he helps us see that change in life is a feature, not a bug. It creates opportunities for incremental improvements and growth. After a historic year of transformation we are all well positioned to rethink life and design something new for ourselves with clarity of convictions and a recognition of what's real. Bill's approach to life design will help you get started in your own process. Show notes and transcript: https://reconsidering.org/episodes/1

Resilience is not something we are born with, it's a set of skills we inhabit. Anyone can learn to be more resilient - given the interest and commitment to lifelong learning and self-love. Monica and her team at the Leadership Wellness Group developed a curriculum called Resilient by Design that I attended over the last few months. It was a wonderful diversion for me during the pandemic to focus on my own wellbeing and learn something new I could share with all of you. In this book, Bill Burnett and Dave Evans show us how design thinking can help us create a life that is both meaningful and fulfilling, regardless of who or where we are, what we do or have done for a living, or how young or old we are. The same design thinking responsible for amazing technology, products, and spaces can be used to design and build your career and your life, a life of fulfillment and joy, constantly creative and productive, one that always holds the possibility of surprise. https://designingyour.life/   About the authors   Bill Burnett is the Executive Director of the Design Program at Stanford. He directs the undergraduate and graduate program in design at Stanford, both interdepartmental programs between the Mechanical Engineering department and the Art department. He got his BS and MS in Product Design at Stanford and has worked professionally on a wide variety of projects ranging from award-winning Apple PowerBooks to the original Hasbro Star Wars action figures. He holds a number of mechanical and design patents, and design awards for a variety of products including the first “slate” computer. In addition to his duties at Stanford, he is a on the Board of VOZ (pronounced “VAWS – it means voice in Spanish) a social responsible high fashion startup and advises several Internet start-up companies. Dave Evans is a Lecturer, Product Design Program at Stanford, Management Consultant, and co-founder of Electronic Arts.Having participated in forming the corporate cultures at Apple and EA, Dave decided his best work was in helping organizations build creative environments where people could do great work and love doing it. So he went out on his own; working with start-up teams, corporate executives, non-profit leaders, and countless young adults. They were all asking the same question. “What should I do with my life?” Helping people get traction on that question finally took Dave to Cal and Stanford and continues to be his life’s work. https://designingyour.life/about/   Big idea #1 - You have multiple options This is one of my favourite ideas in the book, and it is the myth-buster of the assumption that there's only one right thing or one right path for us to take, or thing for us to do. The reframe they use in the book is that there isn't just one solution and that's actually a good thing. They ask the question or reframe the question from “what do you want to be when you grow up” into “what, or who, do you want to grow into?”. The very important point is that this is not about a destination, it's about the journey. Your life is not a thing, it is an experience. The fun that comes from designing and enjoying the experience. Once you design something, it creates multiple different futures. And overall, it's about creating a portfolio of opportunities that you can take and explore, and test, and try, and prototype, and then maybe take into action. One of my favourite exercises in the book (and one that caused a good conversation over dinner with myself and my boyfriend) is one where you create multiple different realities, or odysseys, for the next five years of your life. They give three prompts for these potential odysseys: Expanding your current reality: maybe you are still doing what you're doing, but you are doing it in a more senior position or in a different company or in a different country. Or maybe you're doing what you're doing now, but you've achieved something else. You’ve entered the Ironman that you've always wanted to do, or you have travelled to Antarctica. Is what your reality would be if the thing you do doesn't exist anymore. Your industry suddenly disappears, what do you do instead? Money is no object. You’ve got all the money you need, what would your reality look like? What would you do? What would you not do? I think the most important part for this exercise, and for each of these realities you come up with, is what questions does it raise for you?   Big idea #2 - No passion required. You might already know that I'm a big fan of ignoring this whole passion rhetoric that goes around in the world, so I especially enjoyed this idea in the book. Dave and Bill say that passion takes time to develop. It's an output, not an input to life design. Many people have multiple passions. So how do you start to build a life around passion (based on what we’re told we have to do) if you have multiple passions? And just because you have a passion doesn't mean you should actually do it as your job. Equally many people don't know what their passion is, and particularly younger people. So asking these young people, who are maybe only just finishing their studies and haven’t experienced much in life yet, what their passion is and that they should follow that, is not a useful question. The passion advice is unhelpful at best and harmful at worst. Bill and Dave say that you should find your passion through doing; through trying, experimenting, failing, and learning along the way. You don't need to know what your passion is in order to make a first step, or to take a small action in a direction and to see what happens.   Big idea #3 - Try it on (aka Grok it)  It'd be very easy to overanalyse everything if you feel stuck, and look for more and more and more information. But that likely won't help you beyond a certain point. Instead, they say, you need to Grok it. Quick definition: Grok, in case you're wondering, comes from the 1960s, sci-fi classic, Stranger in a Strange Land. It's used to describe a way of knowing that martians/aliens used, and it actually means to understand something so deeply and completely so much so that you feel that you've become one with it. This has entered more common parlance and ‘I grok that’ is similar to, ‘I get that’, but much deeper than that. So, to really understand our potential realities or possible decisions (as in big idea #1), we need to try on (or grok) our realities. To act as if we've made that decision, without any commitment. In the book they talk about living for one to three days as if you’ve made a decision, to see how it feels. You go about your daily life, knowing that you've made a particular decision. Maybe it's that you want to move to New York, you want to change career and become a photographer. Either way, you walk around for a couple of days to see how it feels to ‘try on’ a decision. You don't have to tell other people about it, but when you're cleaning your teeth in the morning, you think, yep. I'm going to be a photographer. I'm going to quit my job, and I'm going to become a photographer. Just see how it feels. The idea of this is to use all of the different knowledge we have in our body and in our brain. To help us make a decision through feeling, because it's probably not just something we can only think about. We need to feel it. It's therefore important that we're not living as ourselves thinking about those options or that decision, but as a person who's already made that decision, there's a bit of a subtle nuance there. You do this for all of the different options, a couple of days at a time, but you do a little bit of a reset in between each of them. You can test the different emotions that are revealed, and see what might need tweaking (or abandoning, or levelling up) from each of the options as you try them on. I think this is such a fun way of getting to do a little bit of play pretend. You might even start looking into different things, just to see how that feels as well. You might then start researching where you might live in New York, because you've made that decision in your mind. You don't necessarily commit to anything, but you act as if you've made the decision and that that is what you're going to do.   Let’s connect LinkedIn Instagram See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chase is helping future outdoor leaders navigate their paths into outdoor careers and building a comprehensive collection of catalogs and other documents from the early days of the outdoor industry and more. Show Notes Intro to the Outdoors I'm from Utah, born and raised. It's hard to not get into this industry. I have parents who took us out. Camping is what we did. I have a mom who was perfectly fine with taking us out of school to go skiing. And that family time and the outdoors is always the most important thing. So when you have parents like that, who are willing to get you out of school to go play that's a good thing. Utah State University Outdoor Product Design and Development Utah State University started this Outdoor Product Design and Development program in 2015. And a year after it had started, they advertised a role for someone to do industry outreach for the program. And I thought, okay, I could work for one brand or I could go work for a program where I get the chance to talk to brands across the industry. So that seemed like the dream and to be able to go back to my Alma Mater and work with students and be a part of that, and being a part of the campus atmosphere was really interesting. So I made that jump. And that's what I do full-time is our industry outreach and marketing for the program. Outdoor Archives The archives grew out of that program.  The program has a history of gear class and the faculty member that runs that, and our special collections team are at the university and do all the archival work. We got together and just thought, wouldn't it be cool if we had primary documents and print materials that the students could actually study instead of just talking about the outdoor, the history of the industry.  Actually, see it and study it in the archive. And so we started reaching out to some of the industry contacts that we had built and just started asking if they had old stuff that they wanted to be preserved. In the wake of a worldwide pandemic and economic catastrophe, many of our friends and colleagues in the world of digital product design are fortunate to have kept their jobs, but there have also been many who were not so lucky. We thought it would be timely to bring in an expert who has been using a designer’s mindset to help people reframe their approach to their careers. Bill Burnett, co-author of the bestselling book Designing Your Life, has written a new book called Designing Your Work Life. Bill has been the executive director of the design program at Stanford for 13 years and has also taught one of the most popular elective classes there (which his first book was named from). He and his co-author Dave Evans have taken what they have learned from teaching and running workshops for adults in the midst of a career or life transition to come up with a framework for using tools like curiosity, reframing, radical collaboration, and a bias to action to transform your work life and find the best job for you. In this interview,  we speak with Bill about how adopting a designer’s mindset can help you through your current challenges if you’re searching for work. We also chat about how grit and perseverance maps to happiness at work, and how setting aside time for reflection can help you understand what changes you need to make to find a better job (which may even be in your current company).  Takeaways: How setting micro-goals can help you achieve positive change at work. Why you might think about redesigning and iterating on your role at your current company if you’re unhappy. What the idea of “generative quitting” is, and why asking the question “What am I doing wrong?” might be a good idea before you decide to quit. Bio Bill Burnett is the co-author of the NYT Best-seller Designing Your Life. He’s also co-director of the Life Design Lab at Stanford University. He’s a designer, educator, and an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University. He’s also the Executive Director of the Design Program where he manages the undergraduate and graduate degree-granting programs and advises 70 -100 students annually.

Life planning & career planning can be challenging things to tackle, especially in uncertain times like these. Dave Evans, the co-author of Designing Your Life and the new book Designing your Work Life, explains how the principles of design thinking can give you an edge. Whether you’re anticipating a transition to a new chapter in life in retirement, creating a second career or making a savvy career change, “iterating your way forward” is the best way to explore new options. Designing Your Life is one of the most impactful books I’ve ever read and the one I’ve most often given as a gift. It’s the best book on life planning and career planning in my view. We talk about: The story of how Designing Your Life came to be The Principles of Design Thinking and how they can be applied to life planning and career planning using DYL How Designing Your Life is used in different populations around the world today How DYL is leverage by older adults in mid-life and later life Why Reframing is a skill you’ll want to develop How Prototyping works with a person instead of a product What the new book Designing Your Work Life is about How networking is done with a DYL mindset Dave Evans’ advice for someone considering making a change in their life or career Dave joins us from California. ___________________________ Note: We’re in challenging times. Investing some time in reflection and self-renewal is especially important now. These podcast episodes are offered now with that intention in mind. We hope you find them helpful and hope that you stay well. ____________________________ Bio Dave Evans has worked in alternative energy, telecommunications, and high tech. As an early member of the advanced systems group that built the technology that became the Macintosh, he led the first computer mouse team and laser-printing projects, before leaving to co-found the software giant Electronic Arts. After more than thirty years of executive leadership and management consulting in the high tech world, Evans realized that what he really wanted and needed to do was help people rediscover purpose in their jobs and lives. He joined Stanford’s Design Program, where he now co-teaches the incredibly popular Designing Your Life course, which helps undergraduates discover their paths after graduation. In the book Designing Your Life, Evans and co-author Bill Burnett, Executive Director of Stanford’s Design School, bring these principles to a larger audience, proving it’s never too late to design a life you love through innovation and creative problem-solving. A dynamic and entertaining speaker, Evans teaches audiences of all ages that the same principles used to create amazing technology and products can also be used to design and build a life filled with purpose and joy that is constantly creative and productive.   He lectures around the country on design thinking and offers a popular e-course on the subject through Creative Live with Bill Burnett. From his travel around the country and meeting and hearing from thousands of people, Evans was inspired by the Designing Your Life community to compose a second toolkit with Burnett, this time specifically focused on work. Designing Your Work Life is full of tips, tricks, and tools for optimizing and “future-proofing” work.   Evans earned a Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford and a graduate diploma in Contemplative Spirituality from San Francisco Theological Seminary. He and his wife live in Santa Cruz and have five adult children, including three Stanford grads. _____________________________ For More on Dave Evans Buy the new book Designing Your Work Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans Read the Original Designing Your Life book by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, a #1 New York Times bestseller. ______________________________ Wise Quotes On Taking Charge of Your Future

I teach a web design course a local college to a primarily visual design, print-centric body of students. I've made some observations at my own college and across Central Pennsylvania and beyond about design education in a traditional college-based program. Does design education need to change? Is on the colleges to change with the times or on the student to find direction and take it themselves? I'm not sure. I share my own college experience and share experiences, observations, trends, and thoughts about the supposed differences of design, print vs. digital, and the attitudes I've experienced in this realm. Would love to get a conversation on Twitter started around #designeducation to discuss.

Why following your passion doesn’t work. Today I bring you, Bill Burnett. After years of drawing cars and airplanes under his grandmother’s sewing machine, Bill went off to the Stanford and discovered that there were people in the world who did this kind of thing every day (without the sewing machine) and they were called designers. Bill is the Executive Director of the Design Program at Stanford. He got his BS and MS in Product Design at Stanford and has worked professionally on a wide variety of projects ranging from the award-winning Apple PowerBooks to the original Star Wars action figures. He holds a number of mechanical and design patents, and design awards for a variety of products including the first “slate” computer. In addition to his duties at Stanford, advises several Internet start-up companies. Let's connect: Website | Facebook | Twitter About Your Host Jim Harshaw My name is Jim Harshaw. And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, coach, and former Division I All-American wrestler that helps motivated former athletes to reach their full potential by getting clarity on what they really want and taking aggressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You Are Here You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by failure, struggle, and adversity, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far.
