Hello! And welcome back to The Dana Gould Hour Podcast. It's the holidays! The election is over and, although I haven't been paying much attention to politics, I'm sure everything turned out grea... WHHHHHAAAAAA?!?!?!?!?! But I'm still me and you're still you, so let's be who we are and do what we do. Bob Fingerman is here. Bob is an old pal, and one of the finest comic artists in the biz, Bob gained fame in the 90's with his comic Minimum Wage which was one of my favorites of the era, along with Dan Clowes' Eightball and Peter Bagge's Hate. Bob has a new graphic novel out called Printopia and a new book that's sort of a career retrospective to date (anyway, he's still a young man) called That's Some Business You're In. We'll be talking about that, his days writing for Cracked and then later MAD working with Harvey Kurtzman, all that and more, Bob Fingerman. Burt Kearns is here. Burt had visited us before discussing his books The Show Won't Go On as well as his biography of the great and fascinating Lawrence Tierney. But his new book holds a special fascination for me, and probably you if you're listen to this podcast with any regularity. It's called SHEMP! And it's about Shemp Howard, The great Stooge. People think Shemp replaced Curly. He did not! Curly replaced Shemp, and then Shemp re-replaced Curly after that. But it's not just Stooge lore, although there's a lot. It's also about showbiz in the 1930's and 1940's, the experience of American immigrants and how they helped define our culture and so much more. It's a great read. It has a forward by your friend and mine, Drew Freidman. SHEMP! With an exclamation point. https://www.DanaGould.com

One of the greatest living cartoonists, Peter Bagge (Hate, Yeah!, Weirdo) comes on the show this week to talk about an early run by another one of the greatest living cartoonists, Dan Clowes. This is one of those episodes where I couldn't really believe that I got to have this conversation. Listen in to learn how one all-time-great cartoonist's work inspired another all-time-great cartoonist. Plus, some stuff about what it's like to teach college students these days. And a really exciting update about Hate comics!!! Here's a link to The Runs Comics Podcast on iTunes. And here's the link to the show on Spotify. Be sure to subscribe, rate and review! Monica is Dan Clowes's richest and most rewarding book in years, combining the surrealism of early works like Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron with the multi-genre anthology approach of his more recent books. This week's show features Chris Oliveros, publisher and founder of Montreal's Drawn and Quarterly, one of the most respected publishing houses for comic book literature in the world.Chris has brought to the world books from authors like Robert Crumb, Julie Doucet, Chris Ware, Kate Beaton, Chester Brown and Dan Clowes. But eight years ago Chris left his job as publisher at D&Q to write and draw his own comic - his first in almost 30 years. It's called “Are You Willing to Die For The Cause,” a work of journalism that tells the largely forgotten story of the real origins of the FLQ - the militant, violent Quebec separatist group that changed Canadian history forever. Host: Jesse Brown Credits: Tristan Capacchione (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), Bruce Thorson (Senior Producer), Annette Ejiofor (Managing Editor), Karyn Pugliese (Editor-in-Chief)Further Reading: Are You Willing to Die for the Cause? — Drawn & QuarterlySponsors: Douglas, Elijah Craig, RotmanIf you value this podcast, support us! In our last episode, we looked at "On a Sunbeam," about an intense love through space. This week, we look at "Patience," about an intense love through time. Part romance, part mystery, and all sci-fi trippiness, "Patience" came out in 2016 and marks one of Dan Clowes's most ambitious graphic novels yet. Jack and Patience are young, very much in love, with a baby on the way. But one day, Jack comes home from "work" -- you can read the graphic novel to figure out why that's in scare quotes -- to find his wife murdered on the floor. For the next 17 years, he tries to track down her killer and, when that fails, robs some guy of his time machine and travels back in time to prevent the murder from happening. Of course, everything goes as planned. You may think you know what happens, and who the murderer is, but you're probably wrong.

It's a funky poodle this week!Directed by Terry Zwigoff based on Dan Clowes' beloved, cult graphic novel and co–written by Zwigoff and Clowes, GHOST WORLD is a window into the friendship between two teen girls Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) – true outsiders – over the summer following their high school graduation as their allegiance first and foremost to each other starts to wain. These are the caustic, counterculture obsessed girls you either identify with, or you fear. They're working out what to do next – Rebecca's got a clearer path than Enid, who's got to get through an excruciating remedial art class (taught by Illeana Douglas) in order to get her high school diploma. One day Enid and Rebecca prank a lonely guy behind a personal ad. Soon, hermetic record collector Seymour (Steve Buscemi), enters their cool, misanthropic world and unsettles their folie à deux friendship for good.See AlsosThe Women of Ghost World on Working with Terry ZwigoffThe Dan Clowes Reader edited by Ken ParilleThe work of Aline Kominsky-CrumbTavi Gevinson's interview with Dan ClowesThe work of Julie Doucet (Drawn & Quarterly)Ione Skye's short David Goldberg based on "Ice Haven' from 2011Seance in Wowsville, Criterion essay by Howard HamptonGhost World at 20Tillie Waldren, author of On a Sunbeam, I Love This PartBrodie's post about Scarlett's ironing boardsWatch AlsoCrumbFunny PagesAmerican SplendourDiary of a Teenage GirlDaria season 3, episode 5: “The Lost Girls” (here's the episode of Doree Shafrir's podcast Rerun where Aminatou Sow discusses it)Find us on Instagram @seealsopodcast Hosted on Acast. Cartoonist Noah Van Sciver joins the show to celebrate the release of two fantastic new books, Joseph Smith And The Mormons (Abrams ComicArts) and As A Cartoonist (Fantagraphics). We get into his history with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the challenges he had in making a graphic biography of the church's founder (incl. the realization he'd need 200 more pages than he was planning to use), the visual modes he used to separate fact from myth and the influence of Chester Brown's Louis Riel biography, and how the book affected Noah's relationship to the church and faith. We also talk about the cartoonist life and the strips he chose for his new collection, his comics-origin story, the influence of Tom Spurgeon on his art & life, becoming a father in the past year, the advice Dan Clowes gave him about balancing parenthood and comics, and what it means to be present for his son's life. Plus, we discuss his own comics-podcast, the stories he started making during the pandemic, his stance on paper vs. digital drawing, and what it's like to live on the other side of his dreams. Radio Rackham introducerer tegneserieanalyse i podcastform!

We take a break from the superheroes with this one. Actor/writer Ben Rodgers (Lower Decks, Workaholics) joins the Milksops to discuss the indie comic classic Eightball, specifically issue #11. Eightball, written and drawn by Dan Clowes, was an anthology comic that featured a mix of short brutally hilarious pieces, surreal genre stories, longer more grounded explorations of every-so-slightly grotesque characters, mixed in a with lots of commentary on pop culture and our relationship to it! All with amazingly well done art. Ben, who once aspired to draw comics himself, is a passionate reader of lots of different comics and we loved talking with him about what he loves about Dan Clowes. -- SHOW INFORMATION Twitter: @ScrewItComics Instagram: @ScrewItComics Email: ScrewItComics@gmail.com Subscribe: Apple Podcasts Subscribe: Spotify

It was only a matter of time before a company with some reputation put some confidence in cryptocurrency. This morning Tesla disclosed that they had purchased 1.5 billion in bitcoin (a reported 10% of their holdings) and we think this is a big deal. The problem lies in the type of sand we are using. Desert sand is largely useless to us. The overwhelming bulk of the sand we harvest goes to make concrete, and for that purpose, desert sand grains are the wrong shape. Eroded by wind rather than water, they are too smooth and rounded to lock together to form stable concrete. Nick Maandag is a straight-laced accountant by day and a Joe Shuster and Doug Wright nominated cartoonist with a bizarre sense of humour by night. Early influences include the gross out humour of Ren and Stimpy and the subversive satire of The Simpsons. In comics, he moved on to the work of Robert Crumb and other underground cartoonists like Julie Doucet, Dan Clowes, Peter Bagge and Chester Brown and through their inspiration, decided to dedicate his life to making comics after a brief foray in animated film. His first project of note was Streaker's, which won Peter Laird's Xeric Grant in 2010 about three men who are connoisseurs of streaking and treat it like an obscure high art form. It was distributed by John Porcellino (King-Cat Comics and Stories) through Spit and a Half and Diamond and was his breakout work when the late publisher Alvin Buenaventura of Pigeon Press took an interest and commissioned his two follow-ups, Facility Integrity – about a corporation that controls its employees' bathroom breaks to up efficiency – and The Libertarian -- about a libertarian that becomes infatuated with a socialist and must compromise his ideals as a result. Alvin also featured Maandag's work when he edited “Comics” in The Believer Magazine. Now, with Drawn and Quarterly, Maandag has released his first full-length graphic novel featuring three stories that highlight his absurdist sense of humour, including the title story, The Follies of Richard Wadsworth about a dimwitted philosophy professor. In this more than an hour conversation, Aaron unpacks how such a bizarre sense of humour can come from such a straight-laced individual. They also talk about how Maandag's style means the art is just a vehicle to serve the jokes and the writing, but is otherwise pretty minimalist. Plus, Maandag details his earliest interaction with Chester Brown and what it's like to be friends with him now. Maandag also explains how he always felt that he was always going to be successful at doing comics for a living. This podcast is sponsored by Hairy Tarantula and Bam Coffee Co. We also get into how she manages the tightrope walk of motherhood and comics-making (esp. with a 10-month-old who's constantly grabbing for her ink), the conversation around a comic she did about potentially passing along a hereditary disease to her unborn daughter, the moral tensions of teaching comics, drawing strips for digital vs. print, the transformative effect of reading Dan Clowes' Art School Confidential strip, having an on-stage persona for a mutant band where the mantra was "keep your eye off the ball", needing neck surgery but worrying how paralysis would affect her cartooning, and more! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

This week on the review show, Andy and Derek focus on two notable titles, one that has been greatly publicized and the other that has come in under the radar. The former is Daniel Clowes's Patience (Fantagraphics), the creator's long-awaited release and his first new book since 2010's Wilson. (Mr. Wonderful and The Death-Ray, both published in 2011, had been previously published in different formats.) In fact, the guys begin by discussing the publicity and the excitement surrounding this event. While Andy tried to keep himself ignorant of the book's details before its release, Derek admits that his reading experience was initially affected by all the hype, and not in a positive way. However, both guys conclude that this is a strong narrative and one well worth reading. While much of Patience bears the Dan Clowes stamp, parts of it seem more outside of the creator's usual style. For example, even though the relationship between the protagonists is reminiscent of the interactions found in Ghost World, Daniel Boring, and Ice Haven, the fact that Clowes premises everything on time travel make this book stand out in his oeuvre. And although, as Andy points out, there's nothing really new to the time-travel subgenre presented here, Clowes does use its basic components in a compelling way. Next, the Two Guys discuss a work that was designed specifically for the classroom, Visual Storytelling: An Illustrated Reader, edited by Todd James Pierce and Ryan G. Van Cleave (Oxford University Press). This book was released late in 2015 yet hasn't received much publicity at all. While there have been other comics-related books that are designed for pedagogical use, this is the first to bring together a wide variety of primary texts specifically as a course reader. What's more, it's a book that could easily be used in rhetoric/composition and other non-comics-centric classes, as well. Pierce and Van Cleave divide their collection into seven thematic topics: identity, men and women, young adulthood, trauma, history, politics, and the arts. The comics that compose each segment, some complete short pieces and others excerpts, serve as illustrative examples of their particular theme, while at the same time potentially connecting with other thematic sections, thereby giving the collection a feeling of cohesion. The guys admire the diversity of the reader's selections, arguing that this is a much more usable book than the comics anthologies already out there. At the same time, Derek questions the editors double dipping on some contributors — Peter Kuper and Derf Backderf each have two pieces in the collection, while Gabrielle Bell has three — while Andy questions Derek's second guessing of Pierce and Van Cleave's decisions. But this is a debate that the guys always seem to have with anthologies. The bottom line is that Visual Storytelling is an exciting anthology perfect for the classroom, but it is also a collection that can be enjoyed outside of any pedagogical context.
Joe and Joshua talk about Patience by Dan Clowes and The Abbadon by Koren Shadmi.
(Originally Broadcast 02/28/14) - Begun as an open letter to strangers and fellow misfits, The Minus Times grew to become a hand-typed literary magazine that showcased the next generation of American fiction. Contributors include Sam Lipsyte, David Berman, Patrick DeWitt, and Wells Tower, with illustrations by David Eggers and Brad Neely as well as interviews with Dan Clowes, Barry Hannah, and a yet-to-be-famous Stephen Colbert. With sly humor and striking illustrations, The Minus Times has earned a fervent following as much for its lack of literary pretension as its sporadic appearances on the newsstand. All thirty of the nearly-impossible-to-find issues of this improvised literary almanac are now assembled for the first time, typos and all, in The Minus Times Collected, by Hunter Kennedy (Featherproof Books, 2012).

Jacq Cohen is the publicist of Fantagraphics Books. Before that, she was an assistant publicist at Dark Horse Comics and interned at Top Shelf Comix. Fantagraphics Books has been a proponent of comics as a legitimate form of art and literature since they started publishing the Comics Journal in 1976. Since then, they’ve published some of the greatest cartoonists in history including George Herriman, Charles Schulz, Carl Barks, the Hernandez Brothers, Robert Crumb, Chris Ware, Dan Clowes, Peter Bagge, and many, MANY more (including TMSIDK's own Ed Piskor). This year, Kim Thompson, the co-publisher of Fantagraphics Books and one of the most significant figures in comics history, passed away. As a result, 2013 has been a difficult year for the company. Besides the emotional impact of his loss, there have been financial losses due to his active role at the company. In order to overcome this shortfall, Fantagraphics Books has organized a Kickstarter campaign to help finance next season’s book publishing. Although Cohen no-doubt deserves her own episode of Tell Me Something I Don’t Know, she graciously took time to talk about this fundraiser (don’t worry, dear listeners, we get to hear a bit about her and what she does at her dream job!). Please consider helping Fantagraphics Books by supporting this Kickstarter and share this episode with your friends who love comics. Thank you.
"Dum de dum dum dah, dum de duhm dum, The Suburbs" sang Arcade Fire on their hit song, The Suburbs. Probably. Don't pretend you know the lyrics, because you don't. Just as those fun-loving Canadians found plenty to say (albeit in the form of tuneful grunts) about the strangeness and banality of suburban life, so too have a great many of the finest cartoonists. Chris Ware, Dan Clowes, Charles Burns - all have made their careers poking about at the saddest and strangest parts of suburban life. Let's talk about that!

Williams III, and Dave Stewart's Batwoman: Elegy (incorporating the New 52 Batwoman series, the Question, Pipeline, Five Books of Blood, Queen & Country, 52, and more), after which we take a detour into TV Land, taking long, hard looks at Young Justice, Green Lantern Animated, and Walking Dead (including Beast Wars, Joss Whedon and Buffy, and more). Plus, we still have enough slack to hang ourselves on Archie's Mega Man, Will Pfeifer, Dan Clowes and Eightball #23/Death Ray, Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlevy's Comic Book Comics #6, the New 52 Deathstroke by Kyle Higgins, Joe Bennett, and Art Thibert, the DC Universe Legacies hardcover, Marvel's Point One #1, Uncanny X-Force, Adam Glass and Suicide Squad #3, and a whole mess more!
