Reality is complex; mental models simplify it. A mental model is a tool that helps us make sense of the world and manage complexity and large amounts of information. For example, in public finance, thinking of reserves or rainy-day funds as a government's savings account is a mental model. This approach simplifies the complex idea of fund balances by comparing it to something familiar from everyday life. This report will explain how you can use mental models to enhance understanding and decision-making in public finance.

Thank you to Pehr Magnus Karlsson, Head of Finance Transformation at EF Education First, for joining us on the EMEA Recruitment podcast. “Learn to deal with complexity, but also learn to simplify.” In this episode, Paul Toms begins by asking Pehr about the last thing that made him smile. Pehr had a call with a few technology specialists who were able to provide him with a demo solution and think outside the box, cultivating a great interaction. Next, we learn why Pehr has spent over 20 years with EF Education First. He shares that he has been surrounded by great people and has worked with great managers. He adds that it's never boring, as things arise unexpectedly, and he enjoys a challenge. In essence, being stimulated and surrounded by great people is what keeps Pehr loyal to the company. As Head of Finance Transformation, Pehr compares his role to a rollercoaster that is slowly ascending to the top – fun, exhilarating and a little scary. The company is about to go live with a new accounting system that will affect 50,000 people in 100 countries, which Pehr is looking forward to implementing. For those who wish to replicate Pehr's rise to the top, he emphasises the ability to simplify complexities. In Finance, the role requires you to sort, absorb and simplify information for the business, people, or processes. Later in the episode, Pehr lists a few leadership qualities that help him in his role. These are: having the ability to teach, but not lecture, and having the ability to listen. During his extensive career, he has been given opportunities throughout the function, leading Pehr to become a generalist, enhancing his ability to jump into different situations and provide solutions. Discussing his time management skills, Pehr reiterates the importance of communication in his role; with a lot of meetings in place, he must be mindful of the tasks he has to tick off. Onto the pandemic, we learn that Pehr did not find the COVID period very tough personally; he felt supported by the company, and working from home wasn't an issue, due to becoming accustomed to other conferencing tools and methods. He adds that people were innovative during the pandemic, coming up with new ways of working. However, he does acknowledge the struggles other employees may have endured. Paul asks Pehr about the next goal he wishes to fulfil. He shares that he loves to travel in his career and has spent time with colleagues in Latin America, which has inspired him to lean Spanish. As you can tell by the title of this episode this isn't a normal episode of The Brady Heywood Podcast. In today's episode we introduce you to a new show that we've been working on called Simplifying Complexity, a podcast all about complexity science. Simplifying Complexity is all about understanding the underlying principles that govern how systems work; systems as diverse as economies, ecologies, cities and countries. In each episode, we'll meet with the experts, and learn everything from how economies can go boom or bust, to how the Medicis wielded power in Venice in the 1400s, and why large animals live longer than small animals. And above all, we'll learn about the principles that tie all of these things together. In the Brady Heywood Podcast, you learnt how things failed, from a technical standpoint, and an organisational standpoint. Simplifying Complexity takes us one step further, to understand how systems work, and just as importantly, how they fail. If you're interested, we've included a teaser of episode one of Simplifying Complexity, where we're joined by David Krakauer from the Santa Fe Institute, who's going to introduce us to the basics and the history of complexity science. Bruno shares his saga from playing the drums and enjoying international music, mixing songs and culture from Tunisia, France, and LA. Those facets led to studying at UCLA Ethnomusicology, becoming a DJ at KCRW, and building a record label in his living room. He shared work in place-based music and compilation records, in building the sonic architecture of hotels, vacations, and clothing brands -- creating soundtracks to vacations and lifestyles. His own independent label became his inspiration to work to streamlining the complexity of running a music label. His work in Filemaker Pro and Salesforce for his own company became the early stages of the 2015 go-to-market for Revelator. He became a “product guy,” helping labels in many regions with streaming music processing and accelerating catalog valuation and fractionalization processes. We closed with discussions from Web3 -- moving from an information-based to a value-based Internet -- and new types of marketplaces and tokenized economies that will go beyond what artists can do today. Guest: Bruno Guez, Founder and CEO, Revelator Founder of Revelator, and a former Director on the Board of Merlin Network, the leading music rights agency, Bruno Guez brings over twenty-five years of experience as a seasoned digital music executive working with Chris Blackwell' Island Records and Guy Laliberte's Cirque du Soleil. With a strong vision to retool the creative industry, Bruno saw the opportunity to provide a game-changing technology platform for global rights administration and royalty management using blockchain technology, with a goal of enabling efficient and fully transparent reporting, real-time payments and innovative revenue streams for rights owners, creators, artists, producers, and publishers around the world. In my Simplifying Complexity series, I added a new post called, Principle 11: Be both a generalist and specialist through your technical acuity. I also recorded this essay as a narrated podcast.
I added a new article in my ongoing series about simplifying complexity. The article is called Articulating the invisible stories that influence product adoption or rejection and explores why adoption of our products among users doesn't often live up to our expectations. I argue that we need to articulate the story we're telling about the product as well as the story users tell, and identify whether the two are in alignment. Note that you can both read and listen to this article, since I created an audio recording for it.
I added a new article in my ongoing series about simplifying complexity. The article is called Reducing the complexity of technical language and explores reasons why the language in technical documentation tends become so full of jargon and other unfamiliar terms, and a few solutions for simplifying the language. I emphasize the need to read the competitor's documentation and other articles in the industry to get a sense of the right terms and contexts that users likely expect. I also decided to read the article for those who prefer podcasts.

One of the more powerful ways to unleash effectiveness and find greater fulfillment in life and work is to learn how to simplify the complexity that the modern age seems to force into our lives. My guest on this episode of Masters of Leadership is Lisa Bodell, CEO of futurethink, a company that enables organizations to embrace change to become world-class innovators. In this conversation we get practical, talking about the simple things companies large and small are doing to simplify complexity in their systems and cultures and how we can apply the same kinds of approaches to our personal and professional lives. Innovation isn’t happening because the work bogs us down. One of the buzzwords of modern business is “innovation.” Every company wants to show up in its market or niche in fresh new ways, but too often the work OF the business is what gets in the way of new approaches. Lisa Bodell says we’ve got to figure out how to simplify the work we do in order to provide the space, the opportunity for true innovation to take place. Simplifying the complexity of business systems is one of the most obvious places to start. In this conversation, Lisa describes the steps many companies are taking to simplify the complexity of their work so team members can experience the freedom to think and work outside the constraints that stifle innovation. The key to ridding yourself of complexity: Change your habits. Simplifying complexity: the very thought can be overwhelming. Sometimes, complex things are complex for a reason, but much of the time complexity creeps in unnoticed, adding layers of unnecessary burden to already complex systems and approaches. It happens simply because we’ve fallen into work and life habits that permit complexity to rule the day. The reality is that much of the complexity in our lives and companies can and should be simplified - and greater effectiveness and fulfillment result when we do. On this episode, Lisa Bodell shares surprisingly simple tips about how we can simplify the things that bog us down - and it all starts with our habits. You’ll be amazed at how simple it can be, so be sure you listen. Collaboration often requires that we email less and communicate more. This first season of podcast episodes is focused on the art and skill of collaboration and why it’s a necessary component of true innovation. Naturally, effective communication is required to collaborate well, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we should rely on the communication tools we’ve become accustomed to. For example, Lisa Bodell says collaboration often requires that we email less so that we can actually communicate more. That’s because email is one of the primary areas where complexity creeps into company systems to gobble up time better used for face to face collaboration. You can hear Lisa recount how major companies are taking collaboration to a whole new level by placing restrictions on email, in this episode of Masters of Leadership. If you want to be a master collaborator, be sure to include the unusual suspects. The real power in collaboration comes from infusing your process with the insights of many people. That allows you to view the issue through differing perspectives, which in turn opens the door to new ways of thinking about the problem at hand. Lisa Bodell says master collaborators come up with ways to include the perspectives of people she calls “the unusual suspects.” Spouses, finicky customers, even those who have hated on your company might be the perfect candidates for getting you outside your normal way of thinking and into a place of innovation. Find out how Lisa recommends going about it, on this episode. Outline of This Episode [1:10] What does Lisa think of when she considers the concept of “collaboration?” [2:20] The themes and reasons behind Lisa’s book, “Why Simple Wins.” [4:54] Examples of how leaders are removing complexity to achieve innovation.
