Every morning I walk into a small shrine, housed by Ganesh and Laxmi, and ask for a blessing for someone in my life. It could be anyone who I feel requires the touch of divine that day. It could be for someone passing through a tiring time, someone who is worried about outcomes, a couple which has just hitched, a colleague who has a presentation, a friend grieving, or for someone I know as a happy person and I seek a blessing for her not to lose her joy. I have survived, been saved, been held together, been forgiven, been born. And I've been held in arms whilst in incipient flight, till I could learn how to soar. And I in turn keep wishing fervently, that I'm the person who can make a difference in the lives of all who are with me, around me, for me, against me, but who need a touch, some wings, some air to find their flight. Otherwise, what are we in this beautiful world for? We are changed and blessed because of a multitude who we don't even realize are working for us, as a collective or individually. Silent partners, as it were, the nameless, the unspeaking. In the midst of turmoil, strife, petty battles, small injuries, unrelenting scars, often it is the smallest of thoughts or deeds which become the benediction and the very direction of our lives. We are blessed because of the blessings of people who don't give up on us. In 2013, India's Supreme Court made a landmark ruling aimed at transforming the lives of acid attack survivors. It followed a campaign led by Laxmi Agarwal, who at the age of 15 was burned by acid thrown over her body. The attack changed Laxmi's life and scarred her face. In 2006, she took legal action demanding a ban on the sale of acid and more help for survivors. But it took seven years of campaigning before the court made a ruling, as Laxmi tells Jane Wilkinson. In the legends of the Puri Jagannath temple, an irate goddess Laxmi is placated by Lord Jagannath by offering her a sweet. Its the same sweet which led to a battle between Odisha and West Bengal with each claiming to be the original inventor of it. But the presence of the sweet itself is a testament of a pattern in sweets in Eastern India, and even in Southern India. This week, we uncover two food divides in India: one lesser-known and one well-known, both of which have the same underlying cause. It has nothing to do with politics, culture, agriculture, weather or even ecology. Tune in, and discover the story of how genetics shaped Indian food. How can artists use their art to tell stories and process their own experiences? How does it feel to create deeply personal work and then see it exhibited in public spaces? How can you foster a strong relationship with an agent whilst taking on independent projects? What is it like balancing motherhood with a full-time artist career? Why it is important that art is accessible? What are the challenges of working with products with less impact on the environment? I loved chatting to Laxmi Hussain in her Wembley studio, just a stones throw from one of her most ambitious public art projects. Just as her work is intensely personal - both in terms of subject matter and her use of the colour blue - Laxmi was very open about her life as an artist and mother. Painting the female form in her distinctive blue, Laxmi's work is celebrated across the art and design world. She is represented by Partnership Editions and her client list include the Royal Academy of the Arts, Lick, Vans, Derwent Art and many more. We discuss her experience of working with an agent and online gallery - how she fosters this relationship whilst maintaining her own independent projects and thriving social media presence - how she balances motherhood with a full-time artist career; and her approach to large-scale public art commissions.thislakshmi.com@thislakshmi____________________________________________Hosted and produced by Sophie Loxton Lucas, The Visible Artist podcast features individual artists and their paths to success within the creative world. Our very first guest on the Can I Have Another Snack? pod is artist Laxmi Hussain whose stunning work depicts the softness of bodies and the tenderness of early motherhood. We talk about her postpartum experience, and how, even as a mother of three, her instincts were undermined and gaslit. We talk about how new mothers (especially pandemic mums) are repeatedly let down and dismissed. Laxmi shares her experiences of sharing her studio with a toddler and how he has become part of her process. We then go on to discuss her family's food culture and her own relationship to food and appetite. Lastly, we consider all the ways that our kids are told there is something fundamentally wrong with them, and how we as parents can give them the tools to develop resilience to these messages. Also, just a heads up that this will be the final episode coming through the DSMG feed, so make sure to subscribe to the new Can I Have Another Snack? pod to catch all the new episodes!
