The following is a conversation between LaTonya Wilkins, founder and CEO of Change Coaches & author of Leading Below the Surface: How to Build Real (and Psychologically Safe) Relationships with People Who Are Different from You, and Denver Frederick, the Host of The Business of Giving.
In this week's episode, Bernadette Smith joins us. She is the founder and CEO of Equality Institute and the award-winning author of four books, including the bestseller Inclusive 360: Proven Solutions for an Equitable Organization.Bernadette has been named one of Chicago's Notable LGBTQ Executives by Crain's Chicago Business and hosts the weekly podcast 5 Things in 15 Minutes: Bringing Good Vibes to DEI. Bernadette likes to begin working with companies by setting up a series of quick wins. She begins by looking at the business as a whole, and looking at all processes around HR, choosing suppliers, creating marketing campaigns, and developing products. That way steps can be added to check for diversity, equity, and inclusion in each process. She argues that it takes no additional time to be inclusive. “Right now here in the U.S., many states are making it very hard to exist as a transgender human. I would just encourage folks to reach out to people in the community, especially trans folks. Let them know that you have their back and you're there to support them and love them.” Bernadette shares. Tune in to listen, and let us know what insights you gained from this episode. Remember the black squares on Instagram showing support of Black Lives Matter? What action took hold after companies proclaimed to care about DEI in the workplace? Even though awareness has likely increased, meaningful change is in short supply. That's what's driving LaTonya Wilkins to get below the surface with leaders. Leaders have a critical role to play in shifting workplaces (and society at large) towards deeper inclusion and caring about diversity. Unless we get to the core of change, we'll see little progress for DEI. LaTonya chats to me about why we should be skeptical about what's been done, what mechanisms we can use to change from the core, and what's helping and hindering DEI as we shift to hybrid workplaces. If you're trying to get past the DEI checkboxes and external posturing in your workplace, this is the podcast episode for you. Sixty percent of folks from underrepresented groups expend an emotional tax at work. This may include a lack of belonging, masking emotions because their experiences don't "fit" or not feeling safe enough to bring their full identities to the table. That's a lot of people who feel frayed at the edges and miss out on thriving. I am joined by LaTonya Wilkins - a Chicago-based executive coach, speaker, and Diversity/Equity/Inclusion (DEI) strategist. She tells us what remaining unfrayed looks like if you are underrepresented at work through courage and finding your tribe. In Part Two, we highlight the responsibility leaders & organizations have in equity and inclusion. LaTonya talks about dealing with the MUCK under the training, hashtags, and shiny ads -- a feature in her upcoming book, Leading Below the Surface (releasing 2021)! Many thanks to LaTonya for this incredible discussion. I am honored to have had the opportunity to chat with her especially in this crucial snapshot of our history in the Black Lives Matter movement.
