On this episode of the Customers First Podcast, I engage in a deeply insightful conversation with Jaime Raul Zepeda, a Workplace Culture Architect and Executive Leader. Jaime brings a wealth of experience in enhancing employee engagement and cultivating high-performance environments. We delve into the connection between cultivating a people-first culture and driving business success, exploring how organizations can maximize their potential through strategic people-centric practices.   Jaime shares his journey into this field, sparked by a transformative reading of Dan Pink's "Drive." He emphasizes the importance of making work a fulfilling experience since we spend more time there than anywhere else. We discuss the domino effect of workplace culture on overall happiness and fulfillment, affecting employees and their subsequent interactions in their personal lives. Jaime's passion for fostering environments where people thrive radiates as he outlines his experiences at notable organizations like Great Place to Work and LinkedIn, which ultimately led to his current role in Best Companies Group.   We shift our focus to what a redesigned employee experience could look like. Jaime passionately advocates for a holistic view encompassing the triple bottom line: people, profit, and planet. He challenges leaders to remember that focusing solely on profit can lead to disengagement and high turnover rates. Instead, he asserts the importance of feeding the people within the organization to maintain engagement and commitment. Citing the importance of dignity and fairness, Jaime insists that leaders must prioritize their people's fulfillment to excel in business truly.   Throughout our conversation, we explored the misconception that employee happiness is synonymous with engagement. Jaime argues for a deeper understanding of growth and fulfillment, emphasizing that real challenges, rather than mere perks, lead to meaningful employee commitment. He invites leaders to invest thoughtfully in their people, fostering growth that stimulates pride and mastery rather than temporary satisfaction.   We further examine how organizations can cater to diverse employee motivations by distinguishing between those who seek rapid career advancement and those who prefer steady growth. Jaime explains the importance of personalized development paths tailored to the individual's desires and goals, reinforcing that genuine growth leads to a stronger organizational culture.   Jaime and I tackle the common pitfall of senior leaders focusing too heavily on top performers while neglecting the rest of their teams. He encourages a balanced approach to leadership that equally values all employees, asserting that fostering a culture conducive to everyone's development will fortify the organization against future challenges.   As we conclude, Jaime reminds us of the integral link between employee satisfaction and customer loyalty. He encourages leaders to actively engage with their teams to understand their needs and expectations better. Our discussion leaves listeners with a powerful reminder that adopting a people-first mentality is not just a feel-good approach but a strategic imperative leading to increased organizational success. Jaime's insights are invaluable for any leader looking to create a thriving workplace culture that sparks employee engagement and customer loyalty.   Jaime's Contact Information: LinkedIn: @jaimezepeda Website: https://jaimeraulzepeda.com   Tacey's Contact Information: Website: taceyatkinson.com All Socials: @TaceyAtkinson    Thank you for tuning in, and I look forward to having more valuable conversations together in the future. Tom Morris is the author of Always the Music, a book I consider a must-read for anyone looking to understand the ins and outs of the classical music business—how it operates, its challenges, and the fascinating personalities involved. Tom has had an extraordinary journey in the world of music, having experienced it all from multiple perspectives. He started as a percussionist, performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and eventually became the General Manager of the same institution. Later, he served as the Executive Director of the Cleveland Orchestra for 17 years, where he made a lasting impact. Most recently, he was the Artistic Director of the renowned Ojai Music Festival, a position he held from 2004 to 2019. In our conversation, we delve into many aspects of his book and his life, a life filled with passion, dedication, and invaluable insights into the classical music world. In Part 1, we explore Tom's early musical journey, beginning as a percussion student and the significant influence of Vic Firth, the legendary timpanist of the Boston Symphony. From there, Tom moved into a pivotal role as the General Manager of the BSO. Along the way, he formed lasting friendships with some of the most influential figures in classical music, including composer Oliver Knussen, conductor John Williams—who joined the Boston Pops in 1980—and the visionary Pierre Boulez. We also discuss Tom's time at the Cleveland Orchestra, where he made a lasting impact, especially through successful European tours and innovative programming that helped elevate the orchestra's profile. In Part 2 [Subscriber Content], we turn to an influential figure who shaped Tom's approach to leadership and problem-solving: author Jim Collins, best known for his book Good to Great. Tom shares how he brought Collins in to help refine the Cleveland Orchestra's strategy, offering a fascinating insight into his thinking on organizational development. We also discuss a significant shift in how conductors approach programming, with many now focusing on the concert as a whole rather than simply selecting individual pieces. Finally, we wrap up with Tom reflecting on his time as Artistic Director of the Ojai Music Festival, where his leadership left a lasting legacy.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? Understanding the impact of our early experiences and how we adapted allows us to better understand ourselves as people and as parents. The influence of our early attachments on how we learned to relate should not be underestimated; it can offer us valuable insight into how we may behave as a parent. Yet in all cases, no matter what our attachment style is, being a good parent starts with exploring our own story and being willing to look at any pain we experienced growing up. We can develop ourselves and develop healthier relationships, which will allow our children to have a healthier and more secure attachment with us. In order to make that happen, we have to be open and focus on our own emotional growth and self-development. Welcome to the PMO Strategies Podcast + Blog, where PMO leaders become IMPACT Drivers! PMI Talent Triangle: Business Acumen How to Speak to Executives About Projects: Translate Project Speak into Business Value As a PMO leader or project manager, you know the importance of keeping your projects on time, within scope, and on budget. But what happens when you need to communicate these critical details to executives? If their eyes glaze over when you dive into project specifics, you're not alone.   In this week's episode of the PMO Strategies Podcast, I'm joined by Lenka Pincot, Chief of Staff at the Project Management Institute (PMI), who shares her expert insights on how to bridge the communication gap between project managers and executives. In her role, Lenka leads global transformation efforts and oversees the enterprise PMO, making her uniquely qualified to help you rethink how to approach executive conversations. Why It's Important to Rethink How You Talk to Executives Executives are often overwhelmed with decisions, and they need clear, concise information to make quick, impactful choices. However, many project managers fall into the trap of speaking "project language"—focusing on deliverables, timelines, and risks—without connecting the dots to business outcomes.   Key takeaway: Executives don't want to hear about every project detail; they want to know how your project is driving business success. Are you helping the organization grow? Are you meeting customer needs? Are you contributing to long-term strategic goals? These are the questions you need to address.   Lenka shares an important lesson from her experience: “It's not that executives don't care about your projects—they do. But what they care about most is how your project impacts the overall business.” Your job is to translate the technical details of your project into the language of business, making it easier for executives to understand why your project matters and what decisions they need to make. How to Talk About Projects in a Way Executives Understand Here are three essential steps to ensure your conversations with executives resonate: 1. Understand What Your Executives Care About Before you walk into any meeting with an executive, make sure you understand their priorities. Are they focused on increasing revenue, improving customer satisfaction, or reducing risk? Knowing what drives them allows you to frame your project updates in a way that aligns with their goals. 2. Translate Technical Jargon into Business Value Executives don't need to know the technical details of how a project will get done; they need to know how it will move the needle for the business. Instead of focusing on metrics like Earned Value Management or IT specifics, explain how the project will lead to growth, efficiency, or competitive advantage.   Lenka shares this tip: “Be the translator between the technical and business worlds. Your ability to make that connection will help executives make better, faster decisions.” 3. Filter the Noise and Focus on What Matters It's tempting to present all the data to prove the importance of your project, but that can overwhelm executives. Instead, highlight the critical decisions that need executive input and own the rest. This builds trust and ensures that you're not bogging them down with unnecessary information.   Lenka suggests, “Bring only the ‘red flags'—those issues that genuinely need executive attention—and handle the rest as the project manager. This will help you maintain a strong, trusted relationship with your leadership team.” The Role of the PMO in Elevating Project Conversations The PMO plays a crucial role in coaching project managers on how to communicate effectively with executives. Whether it's through pre-meetings, coaching sessions, or providing strategic insights, PMO leaders can help project teams understand the business objectives behind each project and translate their updates accordingly.

In this episode of the OODAcast, Bob Gourley interviews Renee Wynn, former Chief Information Officer (CIO) of NASA. Renee Wynn's career trajectory is a testament to the unpredictable yet rewarding nature of professional journeys. Starting with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from a liberal arts college, Renee navigated through various roles, ultimately becoming the CIO of NASA. She emphasizes the importance of focusing on capabilities rather than specific job titles, a mindset that allowed her to seize unexpected opportunities. The Value of Liberal Arts in Technology Renee underscores the significance of her liberal arts education in her professional life. Her studies honed her writing skills, critical thinking, and ability to organize arguments—skills essential for effective communication and policy defense in public service. This foundation proved invaluable in her roles at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and NASA, where she often had to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. Renee's tenure at the EPA was marked by her passion for the agency's mission—ensuring clean air, water, and safe land use. Her role evolved with the advent of computers, sparking her interest in how technology can enhance mission delivery. This experience laid the groundwork for her transition to NASA, where she faced the challenges of managing a vast and complex IT infrastructure supporting global and off-world operations. At NASA, Renee encountered a culture of profound dedication and love for the agency's mission. She detailed the complexities of NASA's operations, which include managing data from global and space-based sources. A significant part of her role involved ensuring the cybersecurity of these operations, particularly the International Space Station, where a cyber incident could have international repercussions. Renee highlights the innovative integration of art and science in NASA's projects. For instance, the James Webb Space Telescope's sun shields, inspired by origami, demonstrate how artistic concepts can solve engineering challenges. This convergence of disciplines not only facilitates technical advancements but also fosters creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. The conversation delves into the burgeoning space economy, where new opportunities such as space mining, in-orbit servicing, and space tourism are emerging. Renee points out the dual nature of these advancements—each new capability also presents potential risks, particularly in cybersecurity and ethical considerations. Since retiring, Renee has embraced a portfolio career, serving on corporate and advisory boards, consulting, and engaging in public speaking. Her diverse roles keep her connected to cutting-edge technology and allow her to contribute her expertise to various sectors, including marketing and nonprofit organizations. Renee Wynn's journey from a liberal arts graduate to the CIO of NASA exemplifies the profound impact of a well-rounded education on a career in technology. Her insights into the integration of liberal arts and technical disciplines highlight the value of diverse perspectives in solving complex problems. As the space economy continues to evolve, her experiences and foresight offer valuable lessons for the future of technology and exploration. Connect with Renee Wynn on LinkedIn

We have been reviewing all 7 objectives in the book Arete. Jose Raul Capablanca, Third World Chess Champion said, "You may learn much more from a game you lose than from a game you win. You will have to lose hundreds of games before becoming a good player." That's right. How do we celebrate a loss or failure since we know we will learn something from it? When an obstacle occurs, how to you target your thinking to flip that switch and go into- what is the reality, what do I want and take action? We chat about what are some examples of fundamentals, what's most important to you? Eating, moving, sleep, breathing, being present, prospering and gratitude amongst many others. Where can you spend some more time focusing? Foundation building is key to your ability to achieve your goals, consistency, finding your flow and committing. You got this my friend. Jessica and Darren Salquist invite you to master yourself in this episode. That is where is all starts. You first. Be the HERO you can be, for YOU. Stephen Covey states, "Moving along the upward spiral requires us to learn, commit, and do on increasingly higher planes. We deceive ourselves if we think that any one of these is sufficient. To keep progressing, we must learn, commit, and do-learn, commit, and do- and learn, commit, and do again." We love breaking down the quotes and relating them to mastering your life. Learn, commit, do and repeat. We are never exonerated. This episode we talk about precommitments, commitments and recommitments. We all have mis-takes or fall off the path to our goals from time to time so how do we make the pre-commitment, make the commitment and recommit? Not a bad idea to recommit to your protocols and goals everyday. Check out the Heroic application to help you with meeting goals and recommitting everyday. About Susan Power: Susan is the Founder & CEO of PowerUp Leadership, a boutique consulting advisory and leadership coaching firm based in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. PowerUp  Leadership focuses on creating inspiring workplaces  The firm specializes in building leadership capability for Executive Leaders.  Most of her  clients are in the technology industry, professional services, and healthcare In this episode, Jordan and Susan Power discuss: How people communicate in both direct and indirect cultures. Roles coaches play at the highest levels that are usually not discussed Helping teams work together more effectively  Aspects of effective leadership Key Takeaways Effective leadership requires balancing a polarity: Respect and support on one side. Challenge and accountability on the other. The top coaches act as a “thought partner” with their executive clients. They provide alternative perceptions and interpretations to help their clients reach decisions. This is not usually included as something that is part of coaching.  Teams are able to work more effectively if each member is encouraged and willing to communicate their strengths and weaknesses.   To encourage honesty, ask each team member to voice their level of belief in a decision and then address any doubts or concerns that arise.  Prioritizing respect and humility is the key to effective leadership. Being merely “nice” isn't going to help anybody in the long run.  “To be an entrepreneur, you have to be very intentional, that continue to surround yourself with top talent and smart people and smart clients.” —  Susan Power Connect with Susan Power:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/powerupleadership/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/powerupleaders/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PowerUpLeader/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/powerupleadership/    Connect with Jordan:  For executives wanting a complimentary executive coaching conversation: jordan@jordangoldrich.com  Website: www.workplacewarriorinc.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordangoldrich1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.goldrich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordangoldrich/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgoldrich/

Executive Presence or Leader Presence is that X Factor we often hear about. It's how a person makes you feel when they deliver a plan, give you bad news or chair a town hall meeting. A Leader's Presence is often underestimated in the world of business, but it is the very thing that can create successful or failed companies. We all have experienced the energy of an inspirational boss and the deflation of an arrogant or weak Leader. Even when plan is mechanically delivered well, it is "HOW" it is delivered that makes all the difference. Tailored help for your business and the unique circumstances you face is invaluable. While many issues are universal, your position alters your challenges. For example, someone running a 6-figure business, has different challenges than someone running a 7 or 8-figure business or someone who is senior leadership in an organization. To discuss all this, I brought on Michelle Arant, EdD for this episode. Michelle is a master certified coach and part of my team. Together, we discussed some of the top leadership challenges female entrepreneurs face, how they vary from situation to situation, and what some of the things you can maybe do right now to help yourself. This reality of differing needs is why we decided to divide up some of the coaching in our LEAD FOR WOMEN program. We want to address the specific growth areas each position presents and not simply offer a one-size-fits-all approach. If you haven't yet looked into the program, there is still time but it's closing fast. “All of those little things that keep nagging at you, those things scale bigger, just like your business scales.
