Even the most confident leaders can carry quiet battles beneath the surface.Gary Mottershead sits down with Phil Randazzo, founder of American Dream U, for an honest conversation about the hidden struggles many leaders, entrepreneurs, and veterans face. They explore fear of failure, comparison, the need to be liked, and how pressure can cause people to “perform” instead of showing up authentically. Phil also shares how these patterns can follow people home, affecting spouses, families, and close relationships. His upcoming book, You've Become a Dog No One Knows They Can Pet, will soon be available for Amazon pre-order and expands on recognizing and changing those unconscious behaviors.

An expansive policy blueprint for meaningfully expanding the middle class for the first time in a century The US middle class was a product of state and federal policies enacted in the wake of the Great Depression. But since the 1980s, lawmakers have undermined what they once built, shredding the social safety net and instituting laws that virtually guarantee downward mobility for all but the most privileged. How can we restore what has been lost? Rigorous and highly readable, The Middle-Class New Deal: Restoring Upward Mobility and the American Dream (U California Press, 2026) breaks down the policies that have decimated working families and proposes reforms to reverse this trend. As Mechele Dickerson shows, part of the problem is that politicians disingenuously conflate the middle class with the "White lower rich." Such propaganda hides how state and federal lawmakers consistently favor education, labor, housing, and consumer-credit laws that erode the bank accounts of lower- and middle-income people--especially those who are not White and don't have college degrees. Weaving together the latest research with the personal stories of Americans struggling to make ends meet, Dickerson provides a clarion call for political leaders to enact a bold agenda like the one that created the middle class almost a century ago. A. Mechele Dickerson is the Arthur L. Moller Chair in Bankruptcy and Practice and University Distinguished Teaching Professor at University of Texas School of Law. Professor Dickerson is a nationally recognized scholar on financial vulnerability, consumer debt, housing affordability, and racial and economic disparities. She regularly teaches Remedies and Federal Civil Procedure at the School of Law, has taught a class on civil procedural disputes that arose between the two Trump presidencies, and has taught numerous cross-listed interdisciplinary graduate-level courses on the American middle-class and the COVID pandemic. Phil Randazzo is the Founder of American Dream U, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping military service members transition into successful civilian careers or launch their businesses. Since its founding in 2003, American Dream U has provided educational programs and mentorship to over 16,000 veterans and their families, featuring guidance from top entrepreneurs and business leaders.  Beyond his nonprofit work, Phil has authored several books, including Mission Next, Funding Your Bigger Future, and Shark Talk. As an entrepreneur, he maintains business interests across healthcare, compliance, and franchising industries. He has been recognized for his service with honors like the key to the City of Las Vegas and a commission on Nevada's Veterans Services Commission. In this episode… Many veterans struggle with transitioning from military to civilian life, facing uncertainty, emotional upheaval, and misaligned career paths. Standard programs often push veterans into roles that mirror their service jobs without exploring their passions or personal growth. But what if the transition could be a transformative opportunity to rediscover purpose and design a life that truly fits? Social impact entrepreneur and leadership mentor Phil Randazzo shares how identity challenges, suppressed emotions, and outdated belief systems can hinder veterans from fully integrating personal growth. He offers insights into shifting from seeking external relief to practicing internal integration — through tools like meditation, storytelling, journaling, and self-reflection. Phil emphasizes the importance of releasing inherited emotional patterns, cultivating awareness, and building community for sustained change. His journey of emotional awakening, marriage transformation, and helping over 19,000 service members provides a roadmap for creating lasting impact and self-discovery. In this episode of the Inspired Insider Podcast, Dr. Jeremy Weisz interviews Phil Randazzo, Founder of American Dream U, about empowering veterans through personal transformation and entrepreneurship. Phil discusses his turning point, strategies for sustainable change, and the power of community. He also explores childhood belief systems, how transition impacts family dynamics, and the importance of integrating lessons rather than chasing relief.
