Nigel sits down for a very special interview with director Jake Murray and writer/producer Paul Ludden as they explore the history, background and motivation behind their short film The Visit. Their intense character drama tells the fictionalised story of the perpetrator of the real life bombing of Manchester city centre by the IRA in 1996. The bomber returns to present day Manchester as an aging and ailing man, contemplating the consequences of a life spent in violence. Jake and Paul takes us through their experiences making the film as well as their perspectives on the facets of political violence, the momentum of history, the importance of supporting the arts and providing access to it, particularly for people from deprived backgrounds and getting a huge boost to the production from Jack Reacher author Lee Childs. WARNING: Do not listen to this episode unless you have seen both seasons of the Amazon Prime Series “Reacher” or do not mind hearing key plot points. Reacher is an action/adventure series based on the Lee Childs novels of the same name. Alan Ritchson stars as Jack Reacher, a former U.S. Army military policeman with formidable strength, intellect, and abilities. He now lives as a drifter, traveling from town to town across the United States. In Season 1, he visits the (fictional) town of Margrave, Georgia and is arrested for murder. After he is freed, he teams up with two honest police officers, Oscar Finlay, and Roscoe Conklin, to investigate a local conspiracy involving corrupt lawmen, politicians, and a wealthy business tycoon and his son. In Season 2, Reacher is contacted by a former member of his defunct MP unit from New York City when one of their own is murdered under mysterious circumstances. He reassembles his old team to find the murderers and avenge their friend. Abe Gordon, a producer, and host at 92.9 The Game in Atlanta, Georgia, joins the show to review both seasons. They discuss the difference between the show and the two Reacher films, and how they are based on well-received novels. They also discuss the travails of Ritchson who excels at the role of Jack Reacher.

Your Hosts: Dongwon Song, Mary Robinette Kowal, Dan Wells, and Howard Tayler In this episode we explore the first page of The Killing Floor, by Lee Childs, with the goal of learning how to build good first pages for own own work. Credits: This episode was recorded by Marshall Carr, Jr., and mastered by Alex Jackson Liner Notes: here is the 1st paragraph of The Killing Floor, for reference. I was arrested in Eno's diner. At twelve o'clock. I was eating eggs and drinking coffee. A late breakfast, not lunch. I was wet and tired after a long walk in heavy rain. All the way from the highway to the edge of town. The diner was small, but bright and clean. Brand-new, built to resemble a converted railroad car. Narrow, with a long lunch counter on one side and a kitchen bumped out back. Booths lining the opposite wall. A doorway where the center booth would be. I was in a booth, at a window, reading somebody's abandoned newspaper about the campaign for a president I didn't vote for last time and wasn't going to vote for this time. Outside, the rain had stopped but the glass was still pebbled with bright drops. I saw the police cruisers pull into the gravel lot. They were moving fast and crunched to a stop. Light bars flashing and popping. Red and blue light in the raindrops on my window. Doors burst open, policemen jumped out. Two from each car, weapons ready. Two revolvers, two shotguns. This was heavy stuff. One revolver and one shotgun ran to the back. One of each rushed the door.

Books have always held a special place in GamerDude's heart. For as long as he can remember, he has used books to visit different places, differnt times, different worlds, and has used them both as entertainment and as an escape. In this episode, he talks about the books he read as a kid, starting in kindergarten, when he discovered Sally, Dick and Jane. He moved on to The Hardy Boys and devoured as many of their books as he could get his hands on. He talks about discovering The Three Investigators when browsing the Scholastic Book Club Catalog and remembers his favorite sports books: Great Moments in Pro Football, Strange But True Football Stories and Strange But True Baseball Stories. And he talks about the only biography he remembers from childhood - the story of Yankee great, Lou Gehrig. He also talks about some of his favorite authors. He discussed his feelings about Stephen King's works, and how he favors his early works far more than his more recent efforts. And he talks about Donald E. Westlake, the prolific master of the caper novel, and two of his favorite books from his teen years: Cops and Robbers and The Hot Rock. He also mentions some of his other favorite authors: Elmore Leonard, Lee Childs, and Michael Connelly, before wrapping up by discussing how much he misses the days when he could just sit and read.

Four people in a car, hoping to make Chicago by morning. One man driving, another telling stories that don’t add up. A woman in the back, silent and worried. And a hitchhiker with a broken nose. An hour behind them, the FBI descends on an old pumping station where a man was stabbed to death—the knife work professional, the killers nowhere to be seen. All Jack Reacher wanted was a ride to Virginia. All he did was stick out his thumb. But he soon discovers he has hitched more than a ride. He has tied himself to a massive conspiracy, in which nothing is what it seems, and nobody is telling the truth.
