Sir Tim Rice, lyricist extraordinaire, is Gyles's guest today. Tim is one of the few people in the entertainment world to have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award, and his songs for shows like Joseph, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Chess and the Lion King are known and loved all around the world. And yet Sir Tim remains modest and charming, as you'll hear in this conversation - perhaps thanks to the good manners he inherited from his father. Tim tells Gyles about his childhood, his schooldays at Lancing College and how, despite his lack of ambition, he moved to London and got a job with EMI. Much of this conversation, not surprisingly, is about music: the records Tim listened to as a teenager, the band he played with at school, and the first songs he wrote and which helped him to get noticed. We find out how he met Andrew Lloyd Webber and started to make musical history. Thank you Sir Tim Rice for your warmth, wit and wonderful stories. Tim Rice is on a nationwide tour telling his brilliant stories and featuring some of his best-known songs until the end of May, tickets available here Learn more about your ad choices. Len and Michael talked with Tim about his beloved songs that have been the hits of Broadway for years.
From an early age Tim Rice was a pop music fanatic. He began his professional life as a trainee solicitor. While still an apprenticed clerk Tim approached the head of Arlington Books, Desmond Elliot, with the idea of writing a book about pop history. The idea didn't impress Elliot, but the fact that Tim was also a budding song-writer did. Elliot knew someone in need of a collaborator: a young man called Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wanted to be a composer. At Elliot's suggestion, Tim wrote to Andrew, and a meeting was quickly arranged. The two men hit it off immediately, and, owing to Andrew's love of American musical theatre, began to try to write a musical rather than pop singles. And so this story begins. Tim Rice continued to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber, giving us visceral and intelligent musical theatre fare that includes Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. The pair also share the unique accolade of writing a song for Elvis Presley; “It's Easy for You”. The song is also remarkable in that it is the last song on the last album released during Elvis' lifetime. Subsequent collaborations have been with fellow titans of the craft - Elton John, Alan Menken, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson creating popular theatrical fare that includes Chess, The Lion King, Aladdin and Aida. His output has been presented by the Disney Organisation, on Broadway, in The West End and for commercial stages around the globe. The popularity of his works with community and school theatres has ensured that at any time, somewhere in the world, a Tim Rice musical is being produced. This year in Australia alone we have seen commercial productions of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat and Beauty & the Beast. Tim is the recipient of 3 Academy Awards, 4 Tonys, 5 Grammys and 1 Emmy - making him that ‘rare bird' in the entertainment industry - one of only 17 artists to have garnered an EGOT. He was knighted by Elizabeth 2nd for services to music in 1994. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is an inductee to the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, a Disney Legend Recipient, a fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters, and has his own Cricket team. With Andrew Lloyd Webber he wrote a musical for Queen Elizabeth titled Cricket, and has crafted songs for Freddy Mercury, Placido Domingo and David Essex.Tim Rice has contributed songs to soundtracks, such as “All Time High” for the Bond movie Octopussy. His most recent musical work, From Here To Eternity opened in 2013. He is the co-author of the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and a co-founder of Pavilion Books. And today, celebrates 400 episodes of the STAGES podcast. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Sir Tim Rice, Legendary Lyricist and EGOT Winner About Harvey's guest: Today's very special guest, Sir Tim Rice, is a man whose monumental contributions to the world of musical theatre can hardly be overstated. His collaborations with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber on the phenomenally successful and beloved shows, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”, “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Evita”, brought him worldwide acclaim, as one of the greatest and most innovative lyricists of the modern age. He went on to co-write “Blondel” with Stephen Oliver, and “Chess”, with Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA. With Sir Elton John, he wrote “The Lion King”, “Aida”, and “The Road to El Dorado”. He collaborated with Alan Menken on “Aladdin”, “King David”, and the theatrical production AND live action re-make of “Beauty and the Beast”, which is the highest-grossing live action musical of all time. He co-wrote a musical called “Heathcliff”, based on Emily Bronte's “Wuthering Heights”, which produced a wonderful album featuring Sir Cliff Richard and the late Olivia Newton-John. And with composer Stuart Brayson, he co-wrote the musical production, “From Here to Eternity”, based on the 1953 James Jones novel. This man's list of accomplishments is nothing short of jaw-dropping. His shows have broken box office records in the West End, on Broadway, and around the world. Many of his songs have become global #1 hits, including “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “I Don't Know How to Love Him”, “Don't Cry for me Argentina”, “I Know Him So Well”, “Someday Out of the Blue” – and he even wrote the lyrics to my favourite song from a James Bond movie, “All Time High”, from “Octopussy”, recorded by Rita Coolidge. And speaking of #1 hits, he's won THREE Academy Awards and THREE Golden Globe Awards for his songs “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin”, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King”, and “You Must Love Me”, from the 1996 movie, “Evita”. He received 2 more Oscar nominations for “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata” from “The Lion King”. He's been nominated for 9 Tony Awards and won 3 – 2 for “Evita” and 1 for “Aida”. In fact, “Evita” was the 1st British musical to win the Tony award for Best Musical. He's been nominated for 12 Grammy awards, and won FIVE. And, in 2018, when he won an Emmy award for the live TV performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar”, he became an EGOT winner, one of only 18 people in the world to have won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards. He's been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the American Theatre Hall of Fame. And in recognition of his work in film and theatre, he was inducted as a Disney Legend. He's received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And last but most certainly not least, in 1994 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. What should the role of churches of all denominations be as the country emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic? More than 5,500 people including non-church members, congregations and church leaders have provided their testimony on the human cost of the pandemic when places of worship were closed and unable to play their usual role as crisis centres and places of comfort. We hear how two people made a contribution to their communities and the leader of the research, Dr Dee Dyas from the University of York tells Edward that churches and other places of worship have a unique opportunity to play a key role in the nation's recovery. As the Israeli-Palestinian ceasefire took hold on Friday, both Israel and Hamas declared victory. But continuing unrest at the Al-Aqsa mosque on Friday suggests that the underlying issues remain as unresolved as ever. We return to the region and hear from two Jerusalemites who have lived through these perilous past few days, Abeer Zayyed, a volunteer at the Al Aqsa mosque and Rabbi Ron Kronish, who also works in Jerusalem. In June world leaders will gather in Cornwall for the G7 Summit. To mark the occasion, Truro Cathedral and local school choirs have released a song to send a message to them. Written by Sir Tim Rice and Peter Hobbs the lyrics ask the leaders to 'collaborate and take their responsibility seriously'. Now other singers from around the world can add their recordings to the performance. We hear from some of the Truro choristers and Esme Page, co-founder of the Sing2G7 initiative, explains how children can get involved. UNTIL I SMILE AT YOU: HOW ONE GIRL'S HEARTBREAK ELECTRIFIED FRANK SINATRA'S FAME! by Peter Jennings with contributions by Tom Sandler “Until I Smile At You” reveals for the first time the life of one of the most enduring musical talents in the 20th century: a young Canadian girl named Ruth Lowe, who wrote a song that dynamited Frank Sinatra's career into the stratosphere in 1940, “I’ll Never Smile Again.” The song charted on Billboard for an unheard of 12 weeks and has been recorded by more than 150 performers around the world. In fact, it’s still being recorded today (the book opens in studio as famed Blood, Sweat & Tears singer, David Clayton-Thomas, records his own unique version). Ruth Lowe has been called “One of the Architects of the American Ballad,” she is the recipient of a Grammy Award, her songs have been inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and she’s about to be added to the Great American Songbook Foundation Hall of Fame. As Nancy Sinatra says in the book’s Foreword, "There’s a reason why 'I’ll Never Smile Again' has endured: it was a perfect song, interpreted by the perfect singer, at the perfect time.” The book reveals that Ruth Lowe was no one-hit-wonder: she went on to write Sinatra’s theme song, “Put Your Dreams Away” (the last song played at his funeral) plus 50 other tunes for Broadway and Hollywood. (“Until I Smile At You” reveals the humorous story of how she had to write Sinatra’s theme song in under 24 hours.) Amazingly, no one has been privy to Ruth Lowe’s life story until now. Peter Jennings, the book’s author (who has written six other books), was personally selected by her family to write “Until I Smile At You.” And there’s this to add to Ruth’s narrative: in today's era of women claiming their full rights, consider that she was one of the earliest liberated females who worked in a man's world (Tin Pan Alley) and never let her gender, or her attractive good looks, get in the way of her outstanding talent. One of the interesting features of “Until I Smile At You” is Peter Jennings’ interviews with such luminaries as Bernie Taupin (Elton John's lyricist for over 50 years), Sir Tim Rice (who writes lyrics for Andrew Lloyd Webber), Alan Bergman (who has written award-winning songs for Barbra Streisand, Sinatra, etc.), the late Frank Sinatra Jr., music historian Chuck Granata, Sinatra biographer, James Kaplan, and many others... all of whom cast a glow on Ruth’s talents. Also featured are stories from Ruth’s late sister Mickey Cohen, who regales the author with details about how Ruth, whom she adored, wrote “the song.” There is also an interview with noted businessman/philanthropist Seymour Schulich who worked with Ruth’s second husband, Nat Sandler. (It was MGM that wanted to make a movie of Ruth’s life back in the day, staring Judy Garland, but Nat nixed the deal because he didn’t want her clinging to the past.) With the world facing increased levels of stress and anxiety, this is an ideal time for a story like “Until I Smile At You” with its positive, feel-good story of resilience. Peter Jennings writes books from Fairview, his modern home overlooking Georgian Bay in Mundy's Harbour, Midland, Ontario, Canada. "Shark Assault: An Amazing Story of Survival" was published by Dundurn in November, 2015 (http://www.sharkassault.com). The book has received wide acclaim (re-printed less than one month after launch; Readers Digest publishing a 4,000 word excerpt in 15 languages around the world). His newest books, "Why Being Happy Matters" and "Behind The Seams" are now available on Amazon. Peter is also a singer of the Great American Songbook standards (http://www.pjentertainer.com). Sean and Paul are really pleased to welcome Sir Tim Rice to the podcast. Tim is of course one of most successful and important songwriters of the past fifty years. Even before winning three Best Song Oscars in the space of five years (in the Nineties), he had revolutionised British musical theatre with Andrew Lloyd Webber courtesy of Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. But there is also a strong 10cc connection, ranging from an early, almost, management deal with Harvey Lisberg and Kennedy Street enterprises through to his lyrics on one of the great late period 10cc songs ‘The Monkey And The Onion’. All in all, this is a fun conversation calling at all points on and beyond the 10cc map. Sean and Paul would like to thank Tim for his great contribution to British song in general and to our podcast in particular. ‘Tim One Nice!’ Don’t forget to listen to Tim’s excellent podcast ‘Get On To My Cloud’ https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/yz8vx-db121/Get-Onto-My-Cloud-The-Tim-Rice-Podcast

What’s new, Buenos Aires? Nothing much since Broadway is dark through 2021, but we’re here to talk about the new(est) Evita revival from City Center with a few tangents into insecticide, Isabel Peron, Attila the Hun, Lauren Bacall, and insecticide. -- If you’ve never listened to The Lady’s Got Potential, Patrick Flynn from The Original Cast podcast has a great primer: https://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/13648631 For the record, Christine watched By Jeeves when it aired on The Shows Must Go On and rather enjoyed it. Asking if Sooz will play Wonderwall this week is the amazing Gareth Joyner! Born and raised in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, he has made an indelible mark on the UK’s cabaret and comedy scene with his better known comic creation; the acerbic-witted ‘self-declared Siren of South Yorkshire’ Ms Myra DuBois. Casting Gareth aside, Myra has managed to harvest critical acclaim, a few awards and following her appearance on BBC1’s The John Bishop Show, the fandom of Sir Tim Rice, who professed Myra DuBois’ rendition of Rice’s own song ‘I Know Him So Well’ to be “definitive”. At the Mystery on the Rocks bar you’ll find a retired sleuth, the bartender trying to settle his tab, and the down-on-her-luck lounge singer, solving mysteries and drinking cocktails. Tim Rice didn't particularly like musicals. He was a rock and roll fan turned junior exec. In fact when Tim Rice met Andrew Lloyd Webber in the late 60s he had his eyes on a nice job running one of EMI's overseas outposts. But then there was Jesus Christ Superstar which was performed by the Grease Band and recorded at Olympic and sold in quantities nobody knew anything could sell and the next thing he knew he was a giant of the musical theatre and was writing with and for everyone. The perspective he's acquired in the course of a fifty-plus year career is unique and he's already distilled a lot of it into one volume of memoirs. He came along to The Islington so that Mark and David could encourage him to get on with the next volume. It was a delight to talk to him. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
