Do you give yourself permission to rest? If you're like many people in caring professions, you worry that taking time out to look after yourself means not spending that time helping others. That thinking may have got you to your position now, but is it serving you, or is it time to update your operating system? The problem with rest is that we often confuse it with inaction. But rest from work doesn't have to mean rest from activity. As this week's guest, Nick Petrie discovered, for high achievers, rest could be going to the gym or Argentinian tango. Nick's research shows that the way to beat burnout is not to stop doing things altogether, but to find things you love to do, but that are entirely outside of your sphere of work.Choosing what you do outside of work needs to be done with care, however. If you're used to working in a fast-paced and competitive environment, a gym where everyone's visibly pushing themselves to beat their neighbour might not give you the release you need. But engaging in activities or hobbies that give you a complete break from work and allow you to reconnect with your body and emotions could be instrumental in preventing burnout.Listen to this episode toDiscover surprising factors that contribute to burnout.Hear examples from high-performing people about the patterns and correlations of burnout across different fields.Find out how people successfully manage burnout by finding activities that let them switch off and recharge.Episode highlights[00:04:41] Correlations of burnout[00:15:23] Opposite worlds[00:22:46] The risk of finding a world not opposite enough[00:26:22] Six types of opposite world[00:28:47] More correlations of burnout[00:32:31] Sharing in others' experiences[00:36:07] Creating mechanisms for yourself[00:38:11] The burnout curve[00:41:35] Allostatic overload[00:43:25] Three degrees of burn[00:46:08] Catching the warning signs in yourself and others[00:49:11] Nick's top tipsAbout the guestNick Petrie is a researcher and speaker on leadership, resilience and burnout prevention. His book, The Bitter Past, is a superb read, and adept given it's his first traditionally published thriller novel. In the tradition of Craig Johnson and C. J. Box, Bruce Borgos's The Bitter Past begins a compelling series set in the high desert of Nevada featuring Sheriff Porter Beck. Here's an excerpt that shares the mind of this terrific writer.Porter Beck has worked in the shadows before – in another life when he could still see in the dark. But the Nevada sheriff is battling night blindness now and searching for a Russian assassin who's killing old men in the high desert north of Las Vegas. When an ex-FBI agent is tortured and killed, Beck is mystified, not by the gruesome scene in his normally quiet county but by the clues that point to the dawn of America's atomic age and a secret test to see what would happen if deadly plutonium was “accidentally” released in the environment. To catch the killer, he must first find the KGB spy who came to steal America's atomic secrets sixty years earlier, who now lives closer than he could know, and unravel the truth about the world's first dirty bomb, two things the U.S. Government cannot afford to have revealed. As the body count climbs, so do the stakes for him and those he loves, especially when an alluring federal agent makes it impossible to know who to trust.Craig Johnson, author & creator of Longmire, calls Borgos's talents, "A crisp jolt of cask-strength, 100-proof."Author and friend of the podcast, Nick Petrie calls Bitter Past, "A gripping tale with vivid characters at a breakneck pace."Kick back and enjoy an unforgettable and highly entertaining podcast with newcomer, Bruce Borgos (rhymes with gorgeous); he's a talent I feel certain we'll be reading and following for years to come!Learn more about Bruce at BruceBorgos.com and FOLLOW & SUBSCRIBE TO US at TheThrillerZone.com and YouTube.com/thethrillerzone

On today's 87th episode of The Thriller Zone, I'm stoked to welcome national bestselling author Nick Petrie to the show. His runaway hit, The Runaway (sorry, I couldn't help myself) is one of those rare books you just have a hard time putting down. Seriously, I devoured it in record time. The only bad thing? I didn't want it to end. Nick is an accomplished writer of the Peter Ash Series, someone who Lee Child has said, "Lots of characters get compared to my own Jack Reacher, but Peter Ash is the real deal." Some mighty high praise coming from the legendary Lee Child. Join us as Nick shares the journey of The Runaway, but it's his deep insights as to what it takes to become a number one bestseller that both impressed me, and will surely leave you thinking. On today's 71st episode of TheThrillerZone, I'm honored to welcome back the multi-talented author of not only the Tom Clancy thriller #ZeroHour, but the #MattDrakeSeries of thrillers: Don Bentley. Yes, Don joins The TZ for a healthy round of information dispersal, intriguing conversation about the military, epic thrillers, the Tom Clancy legacy, his masterful editor Tom Colgan, and so much more. Sure, we cover his Matt Drake Series, which includes: #WithoutSanction, #TheOutsideMan, and #HostileIntent, but we also drill into his Tom Clancy thrillers, #TargetAcquired and his latest, #ZeroHour. We also talk writing tools, ball-caps vs. Stetsons, Cowboy boots, ribs 'n beer, guns 'n knives, helicopters and vacation spots. That's right, you can't get this sort of entertainment just ANYwhere! Don also sheds some healthy insights and pearls of wisdom about what it takes to make it as a successful writer today. "You have to know and respect the business," Don says. "Because if you don't give the audience what they want, you'll have a tough time selling your books." When Don quotes the world-famous Stephen King, and shares King's take on "the blue collar part and the magic part" of successful writing, well I, along with most all my friends whom are writers, perked up and listened to the promo on Twitter that provided a sneak peek into what was to come on today's show. Bentley was premiered on my show last August ('21), and I'm thrilled to have him back. Side note, THIS Don Bentley has seasoned and grown wiser with age (and page count), and I for one just lapped up his words-of-wisdom; as I'm sure you will too. Kick back and enjoy our talk about #ThrillerFest and the magic of #writingcommunity and attending #writingconferences, as well as practices you can incorporate into your work every day. Lastly, we do our fair amount of name dropping; not to impress you, but to simply share some of the insights of those whom have led the way. They include: Mark Greaney, Nick Petrie, Don Winslow, Brad Taylor, Andrews & Wilson, Chris Hauty, Eric Bishop & Steve Stratton, to name a few. If you'd like to dig deeper, and perhaps pick up one (or more) of Don's books, go to: https://DonBentleyBooks.com (DonBentleyBooks.com), and be sure to FOLLOW him on both Twitter & Facebook @bentleydonb. And as always, I thank you for listening to our podcast on https://TheThrillerZone.com (TheThrillerZone.com), or any and all the places you enjoy your podcasts. When Peter Ash rescues a stranded woman, he finds she's in far deeper trouble than he could ever imagine in the powerful new thriller in this bestselling and award-winning series. Don't miss this latest white-knuckler featuring the character Lee Child calls “the real deal.”     War veteran Peter Ash is driving through northern Nebraska when he encounters a young pregnant woman alone on a gravel road, her car dead. Peter offers her a lift, but what begins as an act of kindness soon turns into a deadly cat-and-mouse chase across the lonely highways with the woman's vicious ex-cop husband hot on their trail. The pregnant woman has seen something she was never meant to see . . . but protecting her might prove to be more than Peter can handle.   In order to save the woman and himself, Peter must use everything he has learned during his time as a Marine, including his knowledge of human nature, in order to escape a ruthless killer with instincts and skills that match—and perhaps exceed—Peter's own.   “If you're not already on the Peter Ash train, jump aboard now. Today on the podcast we interview Nick Petrie, Author of Work Without Stress: Building Resilience for Long-Term Success. Whereas many teams fail under stress there are certain teams that build resilience and can actually thrive under stressful conditions. Nick shares with us the secrets of how hybrid and virtual teams confront today's turbulence, focus on strengthening their relationships, looking for new opportunities and reframing to take advantage of the disruptions in today's new work environment.Responding to Hardship DifferentlyEveryone initially has the same response when faced with a difficult experience. At first, everyone has a big drop off, and their typical levels of functioning and results go down across the board. Meanwhile, after the initial hit of hardship, people begin to respond in different ways. Some People Struggle to Recover At All: The Crisis PhaseSome People Partially Recover or Recover, But Come out of Hardship Looking Exactly the Same: The No Change PhaseSome People Not Only Bounce Back, They Become Anti-Fragiles: The Opportunist PhaseThe Widening Leadership GapThe Poor Performing Leaders are Struggling Even WorseIn the office, if you didn’t have good one-on-one meetings with your people before, that was bad. If you’re not doing it now, it’s disastrous. The same is true for a leaders’ practices. The ties that were weak have dwindled and died in the remote setting; people are not meeting anyone from other departments, and they are not meeting in the cafeteria at lunch. There are even many people who joined in the last year and who have never actually met someone from their company in person. The Strong Leaders Are Feeling Better Than Ever BeforeThe strong leaders are feeling closer to their teams than ever before. Strong leaders have built deeper connections and ties with their teams. These leaders are getting their teams to think strategically about what their networks need to look like across the organization. These leaders then create intentional plans for people to interact to build these relationships. Research on Stress & Resiliency: Is Stress and Tension the Same? Why is it that two people can go through the same event and one person gets stressed and overwhelmed but the other person is fine? Events don’t equal stress. There is a difference between pressure and stress and we usually put them together like they’re the same thing. Pressure is defined as an external demand in your environment. When people ruminate on the pressure, they convert the pressure into stress, which impacts their health and well-being. Leaders need to distinguish these two terms, and come up with strategies that prevent rumination to build resilience. The Redefining Mindset: A Phase of Re-Exploration in LeadershipMany Leaders reach a level of success where they find themselves asking, “is this all there is?” These leaders have accomplished everything they thought was going to make them happy, but they still don’t feel fulfilled and begin to burn out. This phase can mimic a mid-life crisis. Nick helps leaders see where they are on these developmental stages. By discovering what this phase is, leaders often feel relieved. They realize they’re not losing motivation, they’ve just moved to a new developmental stage as a leader and adult.  An In-Person 360˚ Assessment? Nick recommends that leaders dedicate time to seek in-person 360˚ Feedback.  Learn more inside the episode or read the full summary on our blog.

ABOUT THE BOOK: A man wanted by two governments, Peter Ash has found a simple, low-profile life in Milwaukee, living with his girlfriend June and renovating old buildings with his friend Lewis. Staying out of trouble is the key to preserving this fragile peace . . . but when Peter spots a suspicious armed man walking into a crowded market, he knows he can't stand by and do nothing. Peter does interrupt a crime, but it wasn't at all what he'd expected. The young gunman appeared to have one target and one mission--but when he escapes, and his victim vanishes before police arrive, it seems there is more to the encounter than meets the eye. Peter's hunch is proven correct when a powerful associate from his past appears with an interest in the crime, and an irresistible offer: if he and June solve this mystery, Peter's record will be scrubbed clean. While Peter and Lewis trace the gunman, reporter June digs into the victim of the incident, a man whose face rings a bell in her memory. As their parallel investigations draw together, they're thrust into the path of a ruthless tech thief, an eerily cheerful assassin, a brilliant and troubled inventor, and a revolutionary technology that could wreak devastation in the wrong hands. But for Peter, even more is at stake: this investigation is his only path to a life free from the threat of prosecution or prison. Before the end, he'll have to fight harder than ever before to ensure that freedom doesn't come at too high a cost. . . . ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Nick Petrie is the author of five novels in the Peter Ash series, most recently The Wild One. His debut, The Drifter, won both the ITW Thriller award and the Barry Award for Best First Novel, and was a finalist for the Edgar, Anthony, and Hammett Awards. He lives in the Milwaukee area. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

Takeaways1. You begin to realize you’re limiting your options and every positive choice that you make to do something means there are other things you don’t get to do.2. Do what you can to quiet the internal voices that tell you you’re not very good at this and say, “thank you for your opinion, we can have this discussion another time” and just go to work.3. Make the thing you need to make and then do it again and show up tomorrow and do it again and show up the next day and do it again.4. It’s so much easier to keep showing up once I realized that it’s never going to get easier, that it wasn’t a problem I had, that it’s not inherent in me, it’s just that a creative life is hard.5. “To be a carpenter or a builder or a home inspector, you have to have that kind of visual brain where you can sort of imagine something being taken apart.” -Nick Petrie      Even before the impact of the pandemic, the housing market was in a challenging time.   The home building industry is certainly complicated in the physical world with all the components, materials and contractors that need to come together.   What additional complexities have arisen in the last 6 months? What do builders and raters need to know to be better prepared?     Clayton Traylor joins us on the podcast to shed some light on the deceptively complicated world of home building. He will help us take apart and see all the pieces involved. From his position as VP for State and Regulatory Affairs at the Leading Builders of America, Clayton has a great handle on the numbers, trends, demographics and more as LBA represents 20 of the nation’s largest builders.  Clayton helps peek into the looking glass of what the largest home builders see on the road ahead and lends advice on where you need to be positioned to succeed.   You can learn more about The Leading Builders of America at: www.LeadingBuilders.org      RESTalk: To the RESNET community, we hear you and want to engage.   Pros can learn more at www.RESNET.us/professional  Consumers can learn more at www.RESNET.us Or for more info on this topic contact RESNET at INFO@RESNET.US

Raise Your Inner Game Today with David Levin

Pride is a funny subject. I hold it up as an excellent goal and guide for our choices. A lot of people see it as something to avoid.  I heard a fascinating interview recently that reminded that both are true. And that it's important to be clear on its destructive potential.  So that's what I get into in this week's post.  A word of warning: The discussion touches on a topic that can sound like it's part of the current political noise, but it's really not. Trust me, there's no way I want to get into that. :-)  But it is super relevant to current events, so I hope you enjoy the post.  Let me know your thoughts on this, too. It's an interesting topic for discussion. Enjoy! Loved these SO much. Read all four in maybe 10 days. Super fun, too, because I thought maybe our 13-yr old boy would like them, too, and he is instantly hooked. His first sci-fi, and the first books we've enjoyed at the same time. Super fun.  FINISHED: This is shocking, but I actually watched a TV series. Jack Ryan. Amazon Prime original. I NEVER do that. Somehow got started and just blasted through season 1. Just like it was a big novel. Very well done. Looking forward to Season 2. But weird to be watching instead of reading. Didn't like that part of it. Even more detached from people.  CURRENT: Tear it Down. Nick Petrie. This is my second of his Peter Ash books. Like them a lot. One of my favorites on the genre. Introduction threw me off, though. Almost quit a couple of times. Didn't understand why it was happening. Glad I pushed through it. Loving it now.  [ transcript ] Hey, it's David Levin.
