The ThawedCast: Conversations About Animation

Jodi and Philip discuss the fifth Toy Story film from Disney/Pixar. The film takes a direct approach to addressing the difficulties of balancing the allure of technology with a healthy childhood. Sherriff Jessie is the leader of the toys that inhabit Bonnie's room, but Bonnie's love of toys isn't shared by her friends, who all have the Lilypad, a smart tablet designed for kids. When Bonnie's parents buy her a Lilypad, it initially seems like this has fixed Bonnies friendship problems, but Jessie recognizes the deeper problems that an abandonment of true play causes. Hello, movie maniacs! This week Mary and David watched Andrew Stanton’s newest entry in the Toy Story franchise – Toy Story 5 – featuring the voice talents of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack and Great Lee. The Toy Story films one to three are obviously deathless classics and, while the fourth film took a dip in quality, can the newest instalment take the franchise to new heights or at least keep it aloft? With the introduction of tech in the form of Lilypad – a tablet for kids – to the franchise, David and Mary discuss some of the film’s themes: games vs. play, the effects of screen life on children and parents, and making room for the weirdoes. But in the world of Toy Story, toys are people too, and the film also includes themes of abandonment, the fear of replacement and the fear of becoming redundant in a world that has left you behind. Pretty heady stuff, but approached with the usual Pixar mix of sentiment and humour! Thanks for listening!

In this audio episode of Blind Techie Geek Speaks, host Kathleen Masciana takes on a question that reaches far beyond the philosophy classroom: Is natural law dead in the water, or do we still have both a moral epistemology and a moral ontology to ground it? Kathleen brings this age-old philosophical framework into conversation with one of the most significant films of the 21st century—Toy Story 5, the hottest movie of the summer. Join Kathleen as she explores how this blockbuster is reigniting conversations about screens, childhood, and what it means to be human in an age of tablets and AI. She unpacks the film's portrayal of Lilypad—a frog-shaped tablet that functions like an iPad Air—and examines the existential questions raised when our social lives become mediated through screens. What do we lose when digital connection substitutes for embodied presence? Can technology draw us toward our human telos, or does it pull us away? Drawing from a recent USA Today article, Kathleen shares insights from parents, psychologists, and educators who are grappling with these very questions. She also brings it home with her story—how she went from resisting technology as a child, preferring analog play and face-to-face friendships, to embracing it as an essential tool for her education as a blind graduate student at Holy Apostles College and Seminary. She explains how everything changed when her technology teacher began training her at fourteen, and how she blossomed into a true technologist. From the "iPad kid" phenomenon to the irony of product placement within a film critiquing tech's harms, this episode tackles it all. Kathleen reveals why her favorite Toy Story 5 character is Lily, and what that choice says about how we view technology not as villain but as part of our environment. She reflects on balance, the importance of screen-free weekends, and the choices we face in staying connected to what matters most. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts.

In this episode of PixMix, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 2025 Pixar animated film Toy Story 5, the fifth installment of the Toy Story franchise. Bonnie is 8 years old now and she is having trouble making friends. Her parents decide to give her a Lilypad tablet device since the girls from her dance class have one and believe it would help her socialize. However, she becomes addicted to it and Bonnie's toys are left behind. Jessie tries to confront Lilypad, but she is outsmarted by her stating she will help Bonnie make friends with all her features. She inadvertently calls Woody for help and arrives to take care of Lilypad and return things to normal. But Lilypad hacks her system and puts all the toys in the garage. Meanwhile, Jessie ends up in her previous owner Emily's house and meets with Blaze, a young farm girl with an active imagination and who loves horses. Together with Blaze's old devices Smarty Pants, Atlas, and Snappy, Jessie tries to return home before Bonnie is taken over by Lilypad. When the film premiered in theaters, it received positive reviews from critics and fans making $585 million dollars out of a $250 million dollar budget, the largest budget in Pixar history. However, it received some response saying that Toy Story 5 doesn't justify its existence and that the franchise is overdone and exhausting. What did Arun and Patricia think of the film?

News: Disneyland's Autopia attraction is facing a strict state-mandated deadline to retire its gas-powered car fleet by February 1, 2027, or face being shut down. This comes after Honda discovered an administrative engine certification error in 2023, resulting in a 2024 environmental violation notice and a financial settlement for Disney. While the compliance plan doesn't explicitly force electric vehicles, Disneyland officials have confirmed they are actively developing a fully electric car prototype to keep the 71-year-old ride running. – https://www.micechat.com/437247-disneyland-news-autopia-tinker-bell-construction/ To celebrate the release of Toy Story 5 this summer, Disney California Adventure is introducing rotating drawing lessons for characters like Woody, Buzz, and newcomer Lilypad at the Animation Academy. Additionally, starting in early July, Disneyland Resort hotel guests can exclusively enjoy the “Poolside Splash Bash,” featuring themed dance parties, trivia, and character appearances in new costumes. – http://laughingplace.com/disney-parks/celebrate-toy-story-5-new-lessons-disney-california-adventures-animation-academy/ https://www.laughingplace.com/disney-parks/disney-poolside-splash-bash-toy-story-5/ Disney Parks has officially retired FLIK, the wait-time tracking system that helped measure attraction queue times for more than 25 years. Introduced in 1999, FLIK relied on guests carrying red tracking cards through attraction lines, with the final installation recently removed from Goofy's Sky School at Disney California Adventure. Disney now uses newer technologies, including MagicBand data and sensors, to monitor and post attraction wait times more accurately. – https://www.laughingplace.com/disney-parks/flik-ends-disney-parks/ Construction walls have recently come down around a new two-story Downtown Disney building, signaling that the ground-floor Earl of Sandwich and upstairs Gordon Ramsay restaurant, The Carnaby, are nearing completion. Meanwhile, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters has officially reopened following a refurbishment that updated its exterior with a retro 1967 Tomorrowland color scheme. Although official opening dates for the new dining spots haven't been announced yet, both the restaurants and the refreshed ride represent major visual updates for the resort. – https://www.laughingplace.com/ https://www.laughingplace.com/disney-parks/astro-blasters-new-colors-disneyland/ Guest falls down Tiana's Bayou Adventure – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2026/06/23/disney-guest-falls-down-50-foot-drop-on-tianas-bayou-adventure/ Disney Legend Floyd Norman will receive an Honorary Oscar at the 17th Annual Governors Awards on November 15, 2026. This week on Damn You Hollywood, we're heading back to the toy box one more time with Toy Story 5. Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, the latest installment reunites Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the gang for a new adventure centered around Bonnie's growing attachment to a tablet named Lilypad. Set two years after Toy Story 4, the film explores the increasingly familiar tension between traditional play and modern technology, asking what role toys have in a world dominated by screens.Returning voice cast members Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack are joined by newcomers Greta Lee, Conan O'Brien, Craig Robinson, Shelby Rabara, Scarlett Spears, and Mykal-Michelle Harris. With Randy Newman back to compose the score and Pixar once again bringing its trademark visual polish, Toy Story 5 arrives carrying the weight of one of animation's most beloved franchises. But after the seemingly definitive endings of both Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4, does this sequel justify its existence? Is there still something meaningful left to say about identity, purpose, childhood, and growing up? Or is this another example of Disney's increasingly aggressive reliance on familiar brands and established intellectual property? Join us as we discuss the latest chapter in Pixar's flagship franchise, its themes, its place within the larger series, and whether the toys still have one more story worth telling.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

But plucky Jessie (Joan Cusack) won't go down without a fight. The toys are back, and Adam has thoughts about whether they needed to be. A full-spoilers breakdown of Toy Story 5, the Lilypad tablet villain, a tech-and-childhood theme the movie raises and then refuses to actually wrestle with, why this is fundamentally Jessie's story and all the better for it, how the film gets caught serving two masters, the conspicuous absence of anything Lightyear-related, and the recasting problem Pixar can't put off forever. Bring tissues if "When Somebody Loved Me" still gets you. A conflicted but fair 4 out of 5.

There are many different methods that companies use to recycle those plastic water bottles you toss in the blue bin. One of those ways is called chemical recycling. But one company that was doing chemical recycling in central Ohio, is both using heat -- and taking heat and is now suspending operations. In the new Toy Story 5 movie, it's a battle for play time between beloved toys Woody, Buzz and the gang – and a tablet named Lily Pad.It's a dilemma that's playing out in real life, and that got us wondering about tech, animation, and pop culture.Apple promised in 2024 we would have AI-operated Siri. Two years later, they are finally delivering: not only new AI features, but also compensation for some customers who were told their new iPhones would have those features. We're discussing these topics during this week's Tech Tuesday.Guests:Doug Swift, assistant professor, Denison University/reporter, The Reporting ProjectTiffany Knoell, associate teaching professor, Department of Popular Culture, Bowling Green State UniversityRussell Holly, director of commerce content, CNET(photo: Keith Srakocic/AP)

In this episode, we explore the unique partnership behind Richmond's Get Tight Lounge with co-owner Drew Schlegel and Chef Dalisa Campbell. Schlegel, a Baltimore native who worked his way through the restaurant scene starting at the Lily Pad, brings authentic Baltimore-style pit beef to Richmond alongside business partner Randy O'Dell. Campbell, whose culinary journey spans from her grandmother's country bar Boot Scooters to international resort consulting in Jamaica, has transformed the kitchen and what she boldly calls "the best cheesecake in the city." Get Tight Lounge is a neighborhood gathering spot that serves elevated bar food while offering a variety of live music and Baltimore sports on TV. Schlegel shares how he books all entertainment in-house, while Campbell operates a freezer-free kitchen that can push out Altria Theater rush orders in 30 minutes. What if the problem isn't your work… but your alignment? In this episode of the Retire Southern Podcast, James Lewis and his wife Amanda sit down with Callie and Jeff Dauler to explore a question most people avoid. What happens when your life looks right on paper… but feels wrong in practice? From the outside, Callie and Jeff had built successful, visible careers in media. But behind the scenes, something wasn't lining up. And instead of ignoring it, they made a decision most people only talk about. They stepped away. What followed was a complete rethinking of how they approach work, creativity, and life. At the center of that shift is a simple but powerful idea they call the Lily Pad Strategy. You don't jump the whole pond. You move one intentional step at a time. This conversation goes deeper into: Why "success" without alignment creates friction you can't ignore The Lily Pad Strategy and how small moves lead to meaningful change What most people get wrong about podcasting, growth, and audience Why getting the right 10 people matters more than reaching 10,000 The tradeoffs that come with building something that looks successful from the outside This is not a conversation about quitting. It is a conversation about choosing. Choosing clarity over noise. Choosing alignment over expectation. Choosing a life that actually fits. If you have ever felt the tension between where you are and where you want to be, this one will resonate. Jump small. Because that is how you get across the pond.

Chris and Elecia chat about Leapfrog toys, things they like, large company politics, awards, and open source governance.  The Toy Story 5 Trailer with LilyPad toy which is suspiciously similar to the LeapFrog LeapPad tablet. Which is different from the original LeapPad which had cartridges and capacitive touch (capacitive touch was used on the globe as well… the latest globe also has a screen). Why does Elecia want an award? Who knows? But right now, she's getting ready for a listener to nominate the show (Chris and Elecia) for IEEE's Meritorious Achievement Award in Outreach and Informal Education. Probably. But we've got nominators and endorsers so that's mostly sorted. She also signed Embedded up for the Women Podcasters Award which is a popularity contest. Want to know the name of the bird you just saw? Merlin Bird ID is a free app that is amazing. Plucky Cards: Want to have a 1:1 where you talk about more than your status? Choose a card, any card. Or maybe just look through and have a 1:1 by yourself Just reading about Bunnie Huang's new RISCV board Dabao Evaluation Board for Baochip-1x taught us things! We're not sure what we'd use it for yet but it does spark a few ideas.  The Embedded.fm Patreon Slack book club is reading Pragmatic Programmer 20th Anniversary Edition. Talking about open source projects and governance models, we referenced three contributing guidelines: Valetudo, ESPHome, and Zephyr. Some later research led to Leadership and Governance | Open Source Guides and presentation by Cornelius Schumacher – The spectrum of FOSS governance models (Slides). The link between the politics associated with the size of companies and the open source governance models clearly needs a bit more thought. Transcript

Some feelings can't be said – but they can be sung Ann Koplow shares her journey as a therapist and musician, discussing the healing power of music, her experiences with a rare heart condition, and the importance of authenticity in therapy. She emphasizes the role of shamelessness in creative expression and how songwriting serves as a therapeutic tool for both herself and her clients. The conversation explores the impact of music on mental health, the creation of community through shared experiences, and the necessity of letting go of shame to embrace one’s true self. “Every day is a gift. Let go of your shame. Be your authentic self.” – Ann Koplow, LCSW, CGP About our Guest – Ann Koplow, LCSW, CGP Ann Koplow is a clinical social worker, certified group therapist, and singer-songwriter who uses psychotherapy and music to help people grow and connect. She facilitates six open-access “Coping and Healing” groups a week at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and is a past president of the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy. She has yet to publish any articles or books about her innovative model for group therapy because she's better at short-form creations like songs, including “Triggers,” “Everybody's Somebody's Asshole,” “Catastrophizing,” “Other People's Anger,” “Don't Kill Yourself,” and her protest song “You Don't Scare Me!” When she shares her songs in her groups, the members appreciate her relatable and accepting messages like “I Left the House Before I Felt Ready” and “It's Hard to Get Sh*t Done When You're Scared Sh*tless.” Her patients express concern that she will get too famous and leave the groups behind, but that's just not going to happen. Her album The Singing Therapist — Live at the Lilypad! and her other songs are available on Spotify, Apple Music, and probably wherever music can be found. Mike and Kelsey are back to recap the Best and Worst Movies of February. Mike shares why he feels personally bad for his worst pic of the month after meeting one of the main actors from the film. Mike and Kelsey also share how they got busted at the movies when going to see Wuthering Heights. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about Scream 7. When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target. Mike talks about why this movie was hard to watch, the awful Ghost Face Mask and if it’s time to kill this franchise. In the Trailer Park, Mike gives his thoughts on Toy Story 5. Everyone’s favorite toys will have to team up once again. This time they’ll need to work together to save Bonnie from her Lilypad smart tablet as screens take over childhood.
