Phil's expertise spans beyond Lethwei and Naban, extending to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) where he holds a Black Belt from Ricardo Calvalcanti. Dave LeDuc loves all things Myanmar. But maybe more than anything, Dave loves stepping into a fighting pit without gloves or shoes, and giving well-placed head butts that knock an opponent cold! Dave is Myanmar's first— and only— foreign champion of Lethwei, a traditional martial arts boxing practice that dates back centuries. Dave became interested in mixed martial arts and trained in a variety of forms. He eventually went to Thailand, and began looking for fighting opportunities. He landed a controversial bout through the Department of Corrections, which invited Dave into a Thai maximum security prison to spar with a convicted felon. The stakes were high: if the criminal beat Dave, he would be released from prison. But Dave won, and is currently in talks about a movie being made about that encounter. That bout was also the springboard for him to enter Myanmar and learn Lethwei. From the moment he arrived in Myanmar in 2016, he knew he had found a home. His first opponent was the then-undefeated Lethwei champion, Too Too, and after beating him became a cultural phenomenon in Myanmar. He even got the very painful Lethwei tattoos, a rite of passage in the sport. Now living in Turkey, Dave was, like so many, horrified when the coup broke in February. He knew that refusing to stay silent would close off any potential business he hopes to build in Myanmar, along with ensuring that he won't personally be able to visit for the foreseeable future. And yet he has chosen to speak out, highlighting the struggles of the democracy movement in light of the naked aggression faced by the Burmese military. He closes with, “Keep fighting, stay strong! You're not alone. There's a lot of love from around the world.” Support this podcast
“Veganism is not only a diet, but it extends to that I want to continue what I've been doing all my life — to break barriers” - Dave Leduc Welcome to The Fit Vegan Podcast, I'm your host, Luckie Sigouin! Today, I had the pleasure of chatting with Dave Leduc! Dave is the current undefeated Lethwei openweight World Champion. In 2016, he became the first non-Burmese to ever win the prestigious Lethwei Golden Belt in over a thousand years of history. In 2017, he pioneered Lethwei in Japan alongside the International Lethwei Federation Japan (ILFJ) and went on to capture the “Lethwei in Japan” Openweight World Title in Tokyo. Dave now competes exclusively in the largest bare-knuckle organization in the world, the World Lethwei Championship (WLC) where he won the inaugural Cruiserweight World Title in 2019. Dave talks about the sport Lethwei and how it's different from other combat sports. He also talks about what he loves about Myanmar's culture and why he chose to stay in the country. Dave also dives deeper into his philosophy in life and how veganism changed his life. He also shares his plans of building a vegan tribe in Turkey. Join us and listen in! Ian 'Mongoose Jones is far more than just a grappler. This man is a Jiu Jitero, a catch wrestler, has experience in MMA and Muay Thai, and plans to make a journey into Lethwei. We discuss his introduction to combat sports, his journey as a martial artist, and talk about the unique perspective that his varied experience has provided him.
Sticking around with combat sports we take a look at the sport of Lethwei and talk about it's similarities and differences with the sport of Muay Thai. With the normal amount of struggling to pronounce names, both Canadian and other, and a detour to talk about weight.
From Division 1 Football, to announcing fights inside the ring, Kody 'Big Mo' Mommaerts is doing his thing! What an awesome story we get to hear today. There were many lessons 'Big Mo' learned on the football field that he's been able to transfer directly over to the announcing side of things, and he'll share some of those with us today. We'll talk about his favorite fights. Who his favorite announcers are. Whether or not he has his own "tag line" that he uses. Why exactly he stands out when he announces fights (it's not just his height FYI) What an awesome opportunity to speak with 'Big Mo' today!! As a fight fan I fully understand the impact an announcer can have on the entire experience. And I have a strong feeling this won't be the last you hear of Kody 'Big Mo' Mommaerts. ________________________________ What's the Guru Reading? The third annual Christmas edition of the official Clubb Chimera Martial Arts Podcast (Jamie Clubb's Podcast) continues our tradition of answering listener questions along with a Christmas ramble. In this episode I look at the semantic issue of self-protection and self-defence whilst also covering the reason why personal security might be trained without hard skills yet hard skills should not be trained without personal security. Next I am pinned down by the first five things I would teach about self-protection to a non-martial artist and a martial artist. Then we look at what changes I have implemented during the Covid-19 restrictions of 2020 and what I plan on keeping post-pandemic. My last question for this show takes us all on a journey through weight divisions in combat sports and what can that mean for self-defence training. Weight categories appear throughout all mainstream full-contact (and semi-contact) combat sports yet Lethwei, Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, some MMA and several competitions retain an open-weight division. How far can attributes outside of size help us? How important is height, reach and ape index? Can strategy win the day? What about attitude? All these questions will be examined and discussed. Finally, I discuss an abandoned martial arts adaptation of "A Christmas Carol". The two primary martial arts of Burma are Lethwei (a form of bare-knuckle kickboxing featuring headbutts) and Naban, a grappling style that allows palm strikes, and with a focus on ferocious pressure and unforgivingly applied submissions. Phil Dunlap has a lifetime of experience in both of these Burmese arts, with a lineage that stretches back to his grandfather's time in Kachin State during World War II. In this episode, I talk with Phil about how these two seemingly divergent combat styles actually complement each other remarkably well, the cultural factors that influence how martial arts are practiced among the different ethnic groups of Burma, the past and potential future of Burmese grappling, and how his combat base in Naban still sees him medalling at high-level BJJ tournaments well into his 50s.

This week on the podcast I have my good friend Julien Leblanc talking me through his story. Julien is a professional MMA fighter with a 5-1 record out of Gatineau Quebec. Coming from the days of being a 16 year old kid who couldn't do a push up to going undefeated as an amateur MMA fighter, winning a Canadian Championship & finishing 5 straight pro MMA fights, Julien's story is one of adversity. Over the past two years he has had 5 fights cancelled in a row and continues to work. This is enough adversity to stop most athletes in their tracks. However, no matter what you are dealing with in your athletic career and no matter how dark things might look... keep working through it. The only way you can succeed is to make sure that no matter when that opportunity comes you are ready for it. On top of this, we talk over what top level athletes bring to sport. Julien's experience working with some of the top MMA athletes in the world and what they all bring to training & performance to continue to be at the level they are. What they bring?* Focusing on performance - Being good in the gym is fine, but the focus needs to be how you perform in competition* Creating opportunities & Taking risks- Dave Leduc developing the sport of Lethwei world wide and creating a name for himself.* Visualization - Building yourself up in your mind. Knowing what you are going to do and building your confidence
Jay and I discuss how he got started in MMA and how he got his nickname "Muay Thai Cowboy". He spends time describing the sports of Muay Thai and Lethwei. We also get into his military service in the Marines and how brutal weight cutting can be. Is weight cutting good for the sport of MMA? Would cops training martial arts lead to less police brutality? Is Khamzat Chimaev the real deal? #MMA #Lethwei #MuayThai #PoliceBrutality #podcast #MartialArts --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dreadful-talk-podcast/support

Knuckle conditioning is a two-edged sword in martial arts. On the one hand hard knuckles and a conditioned fist make for a much more powerful punch in a streetfight and make it less likely you'll break your hand or sprain your wrist. On the other hand it increases the risk of arthritis and non-functional hands as you get older. What should martial artists do?
